Microsoft bans LibreOffice developer's account without warning, rejects appeal
Recently, we reported on LibreOffice, accusing Microsoft of intentionally using complex file formats as a tactic to lock in users to Microsoft Office, hindering open source alternatives like LibreOffice.
Now, Microsoft has banned LibreOffice developer, Mike Kaganski, from using its services, citing an "activity that violates [its] Services Agreement".
According to Mike, this happened last Monday when he tried to send a technical email to the LibreOffice dev mailing list, which is a normal part of his routine, but Thunderbird returned an error saying the message couldn't be sent. His account was blocked upon retry, and he found himself completely logged out of his Microsoft account.....

Airlines urge senators to reject bill limiting facial recognition
A group representing several major airlines alongside travel companies and airports is opposing a Senate bill that would require the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to generally use manual ID verification at security checkpoints instead of facial recognition. The bill, introduced by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), would broadly restrict TSA’s ability to use biometrics and facial recognition, carving out a few exemptions for the agency’s PreCheck and other Trusted Traveler programs. Passengers may still opt in to the use of facial recognition at the checkpoint.
In a letter Monday to Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), the air industry groups said the law was a “step backward” and that facial recognition technology made security screenings far more efficient.

The criminal complaint lists a pink gas mask and a forearm tattoo as distinct clues that led investigators to use third-party software to help make an arrest.
"Technology has transformed the act of being in public," Crump said. "People who engage in political protests need to understand that it's very difficult to do that anonymously."
Since June, 23 people have been arrested on charges connected to ICE protests in Southeast Portland.

...well, not like I was planning to move my blog (that nobody reads) to a Neocities page... that might be the final push.
On another matter: I think the right approach is to pressure governments to make hate discourses illegal. Yes, it's tempting to screech 'DEPLATFORM!', and short-term effective, but
- It's a stop-gap measure; eventually they migrate to another platform. We shouldn't be playing whack-a-mole with this shit.
- If you give power to a private entity, to get rid of harmful content (like hate speech), eventually it'll remove non-harmful content when it gets some benefit out of it. Cue to recent events regarding the payment mafia and NSFW games.
Indeed. The only way to move forward are decentralized and federated protocols that resist censorship by design.
With that in mind, check out Ghost as a better replacement for Substack. They have experimental ActivityPub integration too.
