After Israeli settler Yinon Levi allegedly shot and killed Hathaleen on Monday in Umm al-Khair, a village in the occupied West Bank, the critical care nurse gave Hathaleen four rounds of CPR. She cradled his head in her hands, checking his pulse and whispering “You’re OK,” as he bled out, the nurse told The Intercept. The medical worker asked not to be named because they fear for their safety. Hathaleen was then taken away in an ambulance, where he died before reaching the hospital.About 20 feet away, and minutes before Hathaleen was shot, another Israeli settler in an excavator tried to destroy the village’s main water pipe, according to media reports. A local man named Ahmad, Awdah’s cousin, was struck in the head with the excavator’s arm and nearly knocked unconscious after he tried to stop the driver.
Turning to Ahmad after Hathaleen was taken away, the nurse administered a neurological exam; he was severely concussed with diminished mental function before he too was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

It's just insane how big of a dropped ball non-Western software development seems to be. If they're not going to write and use their own software for everything, then don't even bother using software! Even some outdated insecure system developed in the 80s would be better than using the latest US software for any kind of infrastructure.
I get why it's still an issue, because it's really hard to make an entire country of 1.4+ billion people all get on the same page about best practices on anything. Imagine getting American software developers to adopt stringent security practices. The last company I worked at we were still adopting TLS transport within the company VPN. So if there is a current push in the US to adopt modern security "hygiene" (security standards that the US created), then I can imagine how much harder it is for other countries. And there are a lot of things required to use the latest stuff. You have to have a good software development and release process so you can stay on top of security fixes. And that requires its own infrastructure. And that infrastructure requires its own infrastructure. And managing security-related stuff is a pain in the butt.
I often feel like server software is just a mistake in general and running software on devices other than personal computers should be kept to a minimum. Which is the opposite of how the software industry has developed. But maybe in the future, there will be some kind of acknowledgement and transition to more "local-first" software. Even free software enthusiasts fall into that trap because their expertise comes from the industry they work in which is all server-centric.
Email, for example, should be replaced with something more similar to Signal messaging system. More end-to-end encryption, etc. and most servers should act as simple routers or always-online caches of data in transit.
Servers are such a liability and the whole ecosystem is so messy and complicated. At least with desktop/phone programs it's a bit easier to reason about their security (in some ways).

It isn't just the government, it's also the fact that the US is the world's imperial hegemon, and a settler-colonial state. There's a large portion of workers bribed by the spoils of imperialism and settler-colonialism into complacency with the status quo, or even enthusiastic support. It's important that we identify the core issues with the US Empire, and that we don't white-wash its genuine problems away and push them all on the state or the bourgeoisie. The working class needs to unite, but to truly do so, we have to recognize and align on anti-imperialism and decolonization, both of which require a large portion of the working class to work against their own class interests.

The latest non-farm payroll, just released, shows that US employment rose by just 73,000 in July, rather weaker than the 110,000 new jobs expected.
But the big shock comes in the latest revisions to payrolls, with previous estimates for both May and June being revised sharply lower.

However, the report also emphasized that Americans' "financial insecurity is widespread and runs deep," and that their concerns stretch back well before Trump's second term.
"More than 4 in 5 Americans (83%) are concerned about the price of groceries, with nearly half (46%) saying they are very concerned," writes the Century Foundation. "Nearly half (47%) of Americans are worried about their current ability to pay their rent or mortgage. And nearly two-thirds (64%) worry about their ability to pay an unexpected medical expense if one should arise. Nearly half of all Americans (48%) believe they would have difficulty paying an unexpected $500 bill without borrowing."
These anxieties were particularly strong among younger Generation Z voters, as well as among Black and Latino voters across all age demographics.

Columbia’s capitulation has turned a university that was once a site of free inquiry and learning into a shadow of its former self, an-anti university, a gated security zone with electronic entry controls, a place of fear and loathing, where faculty and students are told from on high what they can teach and say, under penalty of severe sanctions. Disgracefully, all of this is being done to cover up one of the greatest crimes of this century, the ongoing genocide in Gaza, a crime in which Columbia’s leadership is now fully complicit.
