Dozens of countries scramble to cope with latest wave of Trump trade tariffs
Leaders of more than 60 countries have been plunged into a fresh race to secure trade deals with the US after Donald Trump unleashed global chaos with sweeping new tariff rates.
Trump’s latest blitz triggered a wave of market jitters and fears for jobs in some of the poorest countries, as tariff rates were signed off ranging from 50% to 10%.
There was a minor reprieve that opened the door to further negotiations, after the White House said the updated tariffs would take effect on 7 August, not on Friday, the deadline previously set by Trump.
The new rates, which Trump sees as benefiting US exporters, create uncertainty for dozens of countries, including longtime US allies. They have also raised fears of inflation in the US.
Rates were set at 25% for India’s US-bound exports, 20% for Taiwan and 30% for South Africa. Switzerland faces a rate of 39%. The deadline for a tariff deal with Mexico was extended by another 90 days.

Trump orders two nuclear subs moved near Russia after Medvedev spat
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he's ordering the repositioning of two US nuclear submarines close to Russia "based on the highly provocative statements" of the country's former president Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he had "ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that."
The president added, "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances." The deployment comes after Medvedev warned Trump on Thursday to remember that Moscow had Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort.

“I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,” the president wrote.
“She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes,” Trump said, claiming without evidence that McEntarfer had massaged figures to help the former president.

Back in the first world war anarchists were divided on what side to take, with Kropotkin among others signing on to a manifesto advocating for anarchists to support the allied victory over the central powers. There were anarchists opposed to the war who published a counter manifesto that still seems applicable today:
The misfortune of the peoples, who were nevertheless all deeply committed to peace, is that they trusted in the State with its scheming diplomats, in democracy and in the political parties (even the opposition parties, like the parliamentary socialists) to avert war. That trust was deliberately abused and continues to be abused when those in government, with the help of their whole press, persuade their respective peoples that this war is a war of liberation.

Kamala Harris says she doesn’t plan to return to ‘broken’ system of US politics
Kamala Harris has said that she currently has no desire to re-enter “the system” of American politics because it is “broken”.
On Thursday night the Democratic party’s defeated presidential nominee, who replaced Joe Biden late in the 2024 campaign after he dropped his re-election bid, gave her first interview since losing the election to Donald Trump, talking to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
After she announced she will not run for the governorship of California just a day earlier, Harris told the TV show that it was about something more “basic” than whether she wanted to run for something else instead – with the subtext being whether she will attempt a White House run again in 2028.

Here another helpful solution for people who want to evaluate and compare different Linux distributions: GNOME Boxes, a software to easily create virtual machines
.... virtual machines where you only have to select which accompanying image of Arch / Tumbleweed / Ubuntu / Fedora you want to try.
In addition, the combination of a very stable base system (say, Debian or SuSE Leap) with a fast-moving, bleeading edge virtualized system (say, SuSE Tumbleweed, Arch or Guix) on top can be surprisingly useful. And because small virtual machines, when not running, are nothing else than files on your computer, you can have many versions of them, alter things, try stuff out, then delete it and go back to the tidy original state.

US employers slash hiring as Trump advances a punishing trade agenda
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. hiring is slowing sharply as President Donald Trump’s erratic and radical trade policies paralyze businesses and raise doubts about the outlook for the world’s largest economy.
U.S. employers added just 73,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported Friday, well short of the 115,000 expected.
Worse, revisions shaved a stunning 258,000 jobs off May and June payrolls. And the unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.2% as Americans dropped out of the labor force and the ranks of the unemployed rose by 221,000.
Banned for reporting antisemitism
A user on lemmy.world/c/aboringdystopia stated that Jews should be ashamed of themselves for the actions of Israel.
I rhetorically responded "Why?" and reported the antisemitic comment.
Reporting them was deemed "Trolling" by the moderator, who believes there is nothing wrong with shaming all Jews for the actions of Israel because some Jews state they are ashamed of it themselves.
I explained the moderator why the comment was antisemitic. In a twist of events, they then permabanned me, deleted all my posts from the comunity and told me I would feel more at home at .ml.
PTB, BPR, and even worse than that: censorious enforcement of groupthink (for banning you).
BUT: others are correct to point out that it was wrong of you to report antisemitism in this particular case. The comment in question was certainly a bit iffy, but in a lawyerly sense it's on the right side of the line.
After thinking the comment through I've not been able to come to any conclusion except it implying that Jews should feel ashamed for the actions of Israel.
A commenter below tried to explain it to me by comparing it to Germans in Nazi Germany... which that basically proves my point of them believing that Jews are responsible for the actions of Israe, by comparing Jews to Germans in Nazi Germany instead of Israelis/Zionists..
Even the people who tried to debunk it inadvertedly ended up proving my point.

She cradled his head in her hands, checking his pulse and whispering “You’re OK,” as he bled out, the nurse told The Intercept. The medical worker asked not to be named because they fear for their safety. Hathaleen was then taken away in an ambulance, where he died before reaching the hospital.About 20 feet away, and minutes before Hathaleen was shot, another Israeli settler in an excavator tried to destroy the village’s main water pipe, according to media reports. A local man named Ahmad, Awdah’s cousin, was struck in the head with the excavator’s arm and nearly knocked unconscious after he tried to stop the driver.
Turning to Ahmad after Hathaleen was taken away, the nurse administered a neurological exam; he was severely concussed with diminished mental function before he too was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

On Thursday, more than seventy women from Umm al-Kheir—ranging from teenagers to the elderly—launched an open-ended hunger strike until Hathaleen’s body is returned by the Israeli police. The hunger strike is also in protest of the ongoing detention of several residents of the village, including Hathaleen’s brothers and cousins, following his murder.Hathaleen’s killing was just the latest violent attack on the Palestinian community in Masafer Yatta, a string of villages and hamlets in the south Hebron hills. For years, residents of Masafer Yatta have faced repeated attacks, expulsion orders, home demolitions, property destruction, harassment, arrests, and killings by Israeli soldiers and settlers. Their struggle to preserve their homes and land was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary, No Other Land, which Hathaleen helped make.
Hathaleen’s killing on Monday shone yet another spotlight on the wanton violence Palestinians face on a daily basis from Israeli settlers and soldiers, who operate with blanket impunity—both in Masafer Yatta, in particular, and the occupied West Bank, in general. Over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.

US intelligence uses Microsoft Exchange zero-day vulnerabilities to attack Chinese military-industrial enterprise's email servers: report
The Cyber Security Association of China on Friday released details of two cases related to frequent cyberattacks and espionage by US intelligence agencies targeting China's key industries, issuing security alerts for critical sectors.www.globaltimes.cn
It's just insane how big of a dropped ball non-Western software development seems to be. If they're not going to write and use their own software for everything, then don't even bother using software! Even some outdated insecure system developed in the 80s would be better than using the latest US software for any kind of infrastructure.
I get why it's still an issue, because it's really hard to make an entire country of 1.4+ billion people all get on the same page about best practices on anything. Imagine getting American software developers to adopt stringent security practices. The last company I worked at we were still adopting TLS transport within the company VPN. So if there is a current push in the US to adopt modern security "hygiene" (security standards that the US created), then I can imagine how much harder it is for other countries. And there are a lot of things required to use the latest stuff. You have to have a good software development and release process so you can stay on top of security fixes. And that requires its own infrastructure. And that infrastructure requires its own infrastructure. And managing security-related stuff is a pain in the butt.
I often feel like server software is just a mistake in general and running software on devices other than personal computers should be kept to a minimum. Which is the opposite of how the software industry has developed. But maybe in the future, there will be some kind of acknowledgement and transition to more "local-first" software. Even free software enthusiasts fall into that trap because their expertise comes from the industry they work in which is all server-centric.
Email, for example, should be replaced with something more similar to Signal messaging system. More end-to-end encryption, etc. and most servers should act as simple routers or always-online caches of data in transit.
Servers are such a liability and the whole ecosystem is so messy and complicated. At least with desktop/phone programs it's a bit easier to reason about their security (in some ways).
Chinese uses Microsoft in their military??????????????????????
EDIT: It was a military-adjacent business, now that I read it more closely. Still really sloppy to use closed-source software developed by the only country that could threaten their military (without using nuclear weapons).

You know more than one country can be dangerous, inhumane and unjust, right?
You know that being from a country doesn't automatically mean you agree with everything that country's government does, right?
You are from that country, tho. So do something about that or shut up about the foreigners.
Not to mention, "Tiananmen Square massacre" is a fabrication from US and their UK media lackeys in the same way they fabricated the beheaded babies and the Nayirah testimony and literally too many instances to name.
What happened was a violent clash between the government and US sponsored terrorists trying to hijack a wide-tent protest which dissipated quickly after the violence started. The US kills and has continued to kill more people than that on a weekly basis for decades, without even the veneer of legitimate self defense. Kent State massacre, the entirety of COINTELPRO, MOVE bombings, the killing of the Ferguson protesters.
There's one person in jail RIGHT NOW for every 200 in the US. Cops kill black and latino people on camera, unprovoked, following horrible displays of cruelty, then flaunt it in your face that you're gonna pay for them to do it again.
Shut up about china or anywhere else in the world that isn't funded by your government fr.
You are from that country, though. So do something about that.
Are you assuming I haven't because no one has stepped in and singlehandedly fixed all of the US's problems? What are you expecting?
shut up about the foreigners.
You mean foreign governments. I have no issue with any group of "foreigners", just the governments that brutalize them.
Speaking of, why are you talking about America at all, while telling people to "shut up about the foreigners".
Speaking of, why are you talking about America at all, while telling people to "shut up about the foreigners".
Peak gringo deflection. Because unlike USians speaking about countries they're actively, openly sabotaging, the rest of the world should be able to criticize the one government trying to fuck us all in the pursuit of having everything for its ruling class forever. I'll stop talking about the US the moment y'all fuck off and stop stealing all our wealth through your financial and military apparatus, or spreading torture and terror through proxies because it's "the strategy" only to use it as an excuse to talk about us like animals. I'd be happy to never again remember your shit stain of a country.
It isn't just the government, it's also the fact that the US is the world's imperial hegemon, and a settler-colonial state. There's a large portion of workers bribed by the spoils of imperialism and settler-colonialism into complacency with the status quo, or even enthusiastic support. The oppressed black, chicano, indigenous, and other nations within the US are in general not just fucked over by the capitalists and state, but by their fellow workers.
It's important that we identify the core issues with the US Empire, and that we don't white-wash its genuine problems away and push them all on the state or the bourgeoisie. The working class needs to unite, but to truly do so, we have to recognize and align on anti-imperialism and decolonization, both of which require a large portion of the working class to work against their own class interests.
What happened was a violent clash between US sponsored terrorists trying to hijack a wide-tent protest which dissipated quickly after the violence started.
Can you support this claim with evidence?

Yeah but thats not really steamOS using the aur.
SteamOS using the aur would be unlocking the root folder, doing a pacman update and then using the AUR which I assume very very few users do.
I only mention this because everytime arch is mentioned steamOS gets dragged up as if its the same thing when they're worlds apart.
Using the AUR via distrobox can be done on every distro.
Yes but thats not relevant. Its like me saying windows users dont use the AUR and then you saying um actually im on windows and I run arch in a VM and use the AUR. Like ok thats still the AUR being used on arch.
Like the topic is AUR malware and someone was like arch users and steamOS users. But steamOS users dont need to be worried or lumped in because they aren't using the aur unless they're also using arch through vm or distrobox or whatever.
Am I making sense?
