if you use GrapheneOS on a pixel device, is it something you'd recommend for a privacy worried user? How seamless is running it after install?

I own 2 bloated proprietary devices and don't use them for anything important, like banking or dealing with authorities. I also don't trust the manufactures not selling my data.Id like to have a working device with no bloatware and completely degoogled. Ironically I'd have to buy something made by google to run GrapheneOS on it. Intended use would be to use as a camera, to run CoMaps on it, pkpass files with foss-wallet, reading epubs, making phone calls and running one aurora app.
I don't need the device to play games, watch movies, show off or to play loud music, but I'd like a jack port for my headphones (I assume google headphones would cease to work if I degoogle the device, nor would I want to spend more than necessary enriching that data grabber even more.
Is there a pixel device with a jack port?
Are batteries inside pixel devices glued to the frame or can they be easy to change?
My main OS is debian. How easy is to transfer data from GrapheneOS to debian and the other way round?
Overall if you run GrapheneOS on a pixel, how many years running it and what do you think about it?

- Buy second-hand or discounted old stock from a reseller to minimize your contribution to Google.
- Unless one of the apps you are forced to use requires Google Play Integrity, GrapheneOS will be compatible with any Android app, even providing sandboxed Google Play services if needed.
- For apps so invasive as to require Play Integrity, you might be better off leaving them on a secondary phone with stock Android and powered off when not in use.
- The Pixel 5a is the last Pixel device with a headphone jack, but no longer receives GrapheneOS updates. You may want to consider USB-C headsets, which are usually also compatible with computers, and require no extra dongles.
- If the Google headphones work over Bluetooth, they will also work with GrapheneOS. No experience with Google headphones, but I only missed out on customizable shortcuts and device renaming when I opted not to install the companion app for my earbuds.
- Everybody warns against using out-of-date GrapheneOS devices, but that's not very satisfying. Yes, they will have open vulnerabilities. But as long as you install apps from reputable sources, the chance of being attacked via outdated Android is very low, provided you are not being targeted by an agency.
- That said, grab a more recent Pixel if you can for security updates into the 2030s.
- All Pixel devices have enclosed batteries, most are quite frustrating to remove, particularly the 9a. There's a decent chance of breaking the screen if it has to be removed in the battery replacement process. Won't recommend it, but I have considered buying one with a bloated battery just so the adhesives are already removed for me.
- Transferring files to and from any Linux distro works just fine, as with any Android device, bearing quirks of the mtp protocol in mind. LocalSend can be used for wireless file transfer. rsync requires a workaround.
- I've used GrapheneOS for the past 4-ish years. I'll admit I had a head start since my workflow wasn't too smartphone-dependent in the first place and I had already begun pulling myself out from Apple and Google services back then. Everything just works and I would never look back.

Dharmasthala cops under fire for wiping off 15 years of unidentified deaths records
The Belthangady Police in Karnataka’s Dakshina Kannada district have come under sharp criticism after admitting to destroying key records of unidentified death cases registered between 2000 and 2015 — a timeframe that overlaps almost entirely with the period during which a whistleblower has alleged mass burials took place in Dharmasthala, a temple town located within the same taluk.
The erasure of these records has triggered deep concern, as the whistleblower claims that between 1998 and 2014, he was forced to bury and cremate the bodies of women and minors, many of whom, he alleges, bore signs of sexual assault.

Dozens of countries scramble to cope with latest wave of Trump trade tariffs
Leaders of more than 60 countries have been plunged into a fresh race to secure trade deals with the US after Donald Trump unleashed global chaos with sweeping new tariff rates.
Trump’s latest blitz triggered a wave of market jitters and fears for jobs in some of the poorest countries, as tariff rates were signed off ranging from 50% to 10%.
There was a minor reprieve that opened the door to further negotiations, after the White House said the updated tariffs would take effect on 7 August, not on Friday, the deadline previously set by Trump.
The new rates, which Trump sees as benefiting US exporters, create uncertainty for dozens of countries, including longtime US allies. They have also raised fears of inflation in the US.
Rates were set at 25% for India’s US-bound exports, 20% for Taiwan and 30% for South Africa. Switzerland faces a rate of 39%. The deadline for a tariff deal with Mexico was extended by another 90 days.

Trump orders two nuclear subs moved near Russia after Medvedev spat
US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he's ordering the repositioning of two US nuclear submarines close to Russia "based on the highly provocative statements" of the country's former president Dmitry Medvedev.
Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social that he had "ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that."
The president added, "Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances." The deployment comes after Medvedev warned Trump on Thursday to remember that Moscow had Soviet-era nuclear strike capabilities of last resort.

Donald Trump to fire US labour statistics boss after weak jobs report
Trump said on his Truth Social platform on Friday that he had told his team to fire Erika McEntarfer, the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, who was nominated by Joe Biden in 2023 and began her role in January 2024.
“I have directed my Team to fire this Biden Political Appointee, IMMEDIATELY,” the president wrote.

Back in the first world war anarchists were divided on what side to take, with Kropotkin among others signing on to a manifesto advocating for anarchists to support the allied victory over the central powers. There were anarchists opposed to the war who published a counter manifesto that still seems applicable today:
The misfortune of the peoples, who were nevertheless all deeply committed to peace, is that they trusted in the State with its scheming diplomats, in democracy and in the political parties (even the opposition parties, like the parliamentary socialists) to avert war. That trust was deliberately abused and continues to be abused when those in government, with the help of their whole press, persuade their respective peoples that this war is a war of liberation.

Kamala Harris says she doesn’t plan to return to ‘broken’ system of US politics
Kamala Harris has said that she currently has no desire to re-enter “the system” of American politics because it is “broken”.
On Thursday night the Democratic party’s defeated presidential nominee, who replaced Joe Biden late in the 2024 campaign after he dropped his re-election bid, gave her first interview since losing the election to Donald Trump, talking to Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.
After she announced she will not run for the governorship of California just a day earlier, Harris told the TV show that it was about something more “basic” than whether she wanted to run for something else instead – with the subtext being whether she will attempt a White House run again in 2028.

.... virtual machines where you only have to select which accompanying image of Arch / Tumbleweed / Ubuntu / Fedora you want to try.
In addition, the combination of a very stable base system (say, Debian or SuSE Leap) with a fast-moving, bleeading edge virtualized system (say, SuSE Tumbleweed, Arch or Guix) on top can be surprisingly useful. And because small virtual machines, when not running, are nothing else than files on your computer, you can have many versions of them, alter things, try stuff out, then delete it and go back to the tidy original state.

US employers slash hiring as Trump advances a punishing trade agenda
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. hiring is slowing sharply as President Donald Trump’s erratic and radical trade policies paralyze businesses and raise doubts about the outlook for the world’s largest economy.
U.S. employers added just 73,000 jobs last month, the Labor Department reported Friday, well short of the 115,000 expected.
Worse, revisions shaved a stunning 258,000 jobs off May and June payrolls. And the unemployment rate ticked higher to 4.2% as Americans dropped out of the labor force and the ranks of the unemployed rose by 221,000.
Banned for reporting antisemitism
A user on lemmy.world/c/aboringdystopia stated that Jews should be ashamed of themselves for the actions of Israel.
I rhetorically responded "Why?" and reported the antisemitic comment.
Reporting them was deemed "Trolling" by the moderator, who believes there is nothing wrong with shaming all Jews for the actions of Israel because some Jews state they are ashamed of it themselves.
I explained the moderator why the comment was antisemitic. In a twist of events, they then permabanned me, deleted all my posts from the comunity and told me I would feel more at home at .ml.
PTB, BPR, and even worse than that: censorious enforcement of groupthink (for banning you).
BUT: others are correct to point out that it was wrong of you to report antisemitism in this particular case. The comment in question was certainly a bit iffy, but in a lawyerly sense it's on the right side of the line.
After thinking the comment through I've not been able to come to any conclusion except it implying that Jews should feel ashamed for the actions of Israel.
A commenter below tried to explain it to me by comparing it to Germans in Nazi Germany... which that basically proves my point of them believing that Jews are responsible for the actions of Israe, by comparing Jews to Germans in Nazi Germany instead of Israelis/Zionists..
Even the people who tried to debunk it inadvertedly ended up proving my point.

She cradled his head in her hands, checking his pulse and whispering “You’re OK,” as he bled out, the nurse told The Intercept. The medical worker asked not to be named because they fear for their safety. Hathaleen was then taken away in an ambulance, where he died before reaching the hospital.About 20 feet away, and minutes before Hathaleen was shot, another Israeli settler in an excavator tried to destroy the village’s main water pipe, according to media reports. A local man named Ahmad, Awdah’s cousin, was struck in the head with the excavator’s arm and nearly knocked unconscious after he tried to stop the driver.
Turning to Ahmad after Hathaleen was taken away, the nurse administered a neurological exam; he was severely concussed with diminished mental function before he too was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.

On Thursday, more than seventy women from Umm al-Kheir—ranging from teenagers to the elderly—launched an open-ended hunger strike until Hathaleen’s body is returned by the Israeli police. The hunger strike is also in protest of the ongoing detention of several residents of the village, including Hathaleen’s brothers and cousins, following his murder.Hathaleen’s killing was just the latest violent attack on the Palestinian community in Masafer Yatta, a string of villages and hamlets in the south Hebron hills. For years, residents of Masafer Yatta have faced repeated attacks, expulsion orders, home demolitions, property destruction, harassment, arrests, and killings by Israeli soldiers and settlers. Their struggle to preserve their homes and land was the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary, No Other Land, which Hathaleen helped make.
Hathaleen’s killing on Monday shone yet another spotlight on the wanton violence Palestinians face on a daily basis from Israeli settlers and soldiers, who operate with blanket impunity—both in Masafer Yatta, in particular, and the occupied West Bank, in general. Over 1,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers in the West Bank since October 7, 2023.

With that said, I ran lineage before I ran graphene and I ran lineage after I moved away from graphene.

I love GrapheneOS. Pretty much just works. Many Apps do not even have to have google play installed. There are some apps that may not run. Typically those that require an original authentic device. My banking app did not run originally but now it does. Not sure but I think I had issues with the UPS app for some reason. I switched to the web for that.

What it's got over LineageOS is it sandbox stuff out the box, so you can compromise with Google Maps and things like Bank apps run.
For work, I need a satnav with traffic in it's route planning. No matter how good Organic Map's maps are. Also for work, I need a Bank app. I'm not really happy with GrapheneOS, but I don't have a choice. It's my least worse option. Unless I keep a GrapheneOS phone for work and maybe try a Mobian phone for home..... When it looks day drivable...
Edit: oh and transferring files, Nextcloud or scp in Termux.

At this point I would not use anything else.
You won't have issues with app compatibility except for certain banking apps and Google Pay, if you choose to install the sandboxed Google Services. If not, you'll have issues with some apps not sending you push notifications (for example, Discord and Proton Mail) and other apps not working entirely (like Snapchat). Still, the last time I tried going fully de-Googled I remember most apps still working well enough even without Google services. From your post it sounds like you could easily live without it.
Sadly the newer phones have no headphone jack, and you definitely should not go for older ones that don't recieve security updates. And the Pixels have never had removable batteries (you can check out iFixit for more info on repairability). Any Bluetooth headphones will work. They do have a 3.5mm jack to USB-C adapter but I it never worked for me.
Data transfer between Linux and Android has always been dead simple regardless of the OSes involved. Just plug the phone in and tap a couple of things, the phone's filesystem will show up on the PC like any USB drive.

That said, I haven't tried GrapheneOS. From what I hear you can lock it down even more and there are more features.

Up until recently pokemongo didn't launch as an example. Others won't load prices or store pages well, but thats to be expected without full google approval.
Some banking apps do work some don't. Mine stopped working for like 3 weeks then returned to normal.

I use a qudelix-5K bluetooth adapter which has excellent sound (and balanced and onboard equalizer, flawless 96Khz/32bit LDAC from my pixel 7, also doubles as a USB DAC), it's expensive but after 2 years I still think it's one of my best recent tech purchases.
I had to replace mine and chose to use an iFixit kit, first foray into glued repair and while fraught it went fine. Removal wasn't that bad, there's a plastic strip under the battery to help get the bastard out.

2 odd years in and it works great for a similar use case to yours (music [PowerAmp, paid], books [Moon Reader, paid], maps [still on Organic], notes [joplin], camera [google], web - ironfox, mail [proton]). Network deny permission is a godsend, most things on Google Play Store can be installed (even paid will usually work, but some use more aggressive checking) and then you can uninstall the Play store and services and deny network to anything that might call home and everything just works, including full google camera (see my history for details). A bit of onboarding hassle finding replacements, but well worth it, updates happen a lot more often than you are used to, but it's a good pain. I also have a second user with full Google play and a few other apps, but I can't remember when I last spun it up, good training wheels for adaption.

USB, or Wireless across any protocol you can imagine.
My experience with GOS:
Contactless payments and some QR code payment methods from banking apps in my country refuse to work with GOS.
Otherwise, I love it. Very easy to install and use. Recommended.
