US and Russia suggest ‘West Bank-style occupation of Ukraine’
The suggestion was put forward during discussions between President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and his Russian counterparts, a source with insight into the U.S. National Security Council told the paper.
Witkoff, who also serves as the White House’s Middle East envoy, reportedly backs the suggestion, which the U.S. believes will solve the issue of the Ukrainian constitution prohibiting giving up territory without organizing a referendum. While Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected any notion of ceding territory, the new occupation proposal may lead to a truce following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
According to the proposal, Ukraine’s borders would remain officially unchanged, similar to the borders of the West Bank, even as Israel controls the territory. “It’ll just be like Israel occupies the West Bank,” the source told The Times.

What's a reliable filesystem for long term data archival that also supports transparent file compression?
Are you using RAID at all? If so ZFS is probably the way to go. If not I think it matters less whether you use either btrfs or ZFS.
Regarding btrfs and power loss:

...btrfs is designed to only experience data loss not corruption, assuming well behaving hardware in power outage scenario. In practice ZFS has more maturity overall (definately) so may be better (my speculation).
Beyond direct comparisons if you already have on and offline backups then you are protected from power corruption and only have to worry about data loss anyway?

I think for home archival use is btrfs is a terrible idea. I burnt myself with it so many times.
Yes it should be safe and resistant to unclean shutdowns, but my experience with reliability is not great.

When it comes to Russia-Ukraine news whatever we read in media (Trump is going to ditch Ukraine and never give them any more weapons) versus what actually happens (Military Industrial Complex go brrr) is almost always contradictory. Still the sheer 'creativity' of this idea is what lends it the credibility to be possible. Not that anyone should take it as a fact.

in reply to geneva_convenience • • •I suppose technically it's a solution to the immediate logistical challenges of a truce, short of Russia withdrawing and leaving Ukraine in peace. Long-term though Russia will commit all manner of war crimes to prevent the land returning to Ukraine.
It's heartbreaking to see Trump throw Ukraine under the bus, more than the land I really hope they can at least negotiate the return of the Ukrainian children temporarily placed in foster care that were abducted into Russia. Separating children from their parents and putting them into a country that is hostile to their race is incredibly cruel, and I will never forgive Russia for it.
