Piracy Is the number two community on Lemmy?

Does anyone else find it Odd that the number two community for Lemmy is piracy? It's not exactly a good image is it.... 😏

I mean here we are all privacy advocates fighting for the honest man's right to be private on the internet...and yet it kind of seems to validate the idea that the only people who want privacy have something scandalous to engage in 🥴

Anyone have anything to say for themselves? Or would it be true to say that the only people who want privacy online want to engage in things like pornography or stealing?

Don't like piracy? Then don't participate, your argument doesn't make since you can pirate in certain countries without privacy, it's like saying you shouldn't have a knife in your house because you can murder with it and a cutlery store is odd and paints a bad image because it sells knifes and forks and that can be used for murder piracy and privacy are not mutually exclusive they are just similar because one fights for information freedom and one fights for not being tracked by big adtech, you sound like the chat control supporters (FROM ONWARDS IS MY OPINION) piracy is not stealing you are not stealing any physical the company is not losing any money that they have made they just lose money that they should have made and that is just a metric that does not matter it is the same as if you didn't even buy the game, but you just can play the game the important part is nobody is losing anything.

Does anyone know if it can run CUDA code? Because that's the silver bullet ensuring Nvidia dominance in the planet-wrecking servers
in reply to I Cast Fist

llama and pytorch support it right now. CUDA isn't available on its own as far as I can tell. I'd like to try one out but the bandwidth seems to be ass. About 25% as fast as a 3090. It's a really good start for them though.

in reply to BrikoX

Secure boot won't let your kernel be modified though.

Their anti cheat software just makes sure that you haven't tampered with the kernel at all. It just monitors for any changes after the system has booted.

It does not modify your kernel.

in reply to 9tr6gyp3

Not entirely. The actual anti-cheat software that have access to the kernel with Secure Boot can be modified either intentionally by the developer or unintentionally by a hack. It's unnecessary attack vector among many other non-security related issues.

Power Loss but Still Online with Fiber Connection

Interesting experience, this has happened twice now. When house looses power I am still online now that I have moved to Fiber.

It feels a bit eerie. My network and computers, TV, media center, etc are all on UPS so they just keep going. Things just get really quite which is interrupted by just the periodic beeps of the UPS systems.

Does anyone know why my new Fiber connection does this but my old system which was bonded DSL did not? I know back in the early days of DSL I could do this, but some where along the way it stopped being power outage resistant.

Amazon blocks AI bots/crawlers from Facebook(Meta), Google, Huawei, Mistral and others, amid commerce battle

Amazon is desperately trying to stop AI companies from training models on its data. They just added six more AI-related crawlers to the blacklist from Facebook(Meta), Google, Huawei, Mistral and others. A month ago we saw that they added Claude, Perplexity and a different Google crawler.

Some of those are to prevent access to Amazon at training, others to block features like deep research. The blacklist is in the publicly accessible robots.txt file. Assuming those crawlers are well-behaved, they will now stop accessing Amazon. It is notable that Amazon seems to be the only one actively fighting this - Walmart and eBay have not many any changes.

Amazon is a treasure trove of ecommerce data. I think it is too late to stop AI training - Amazon's data is already in the datasets ChatGPT and others are using. But Amazon is definitely not interested in helping anyone build the future of AI shopping. If that is indeed the future, Amazon wants to build it itself.

Replication of Quantum Factorisation Records with an 8-bit Home Computer, an Abacus, and a Dog

Abstract

This paper presents implementations that match and, where possible, exceed current quantum factorisation records using a VIC-20 8-bit home computer from 1981, an abacus, and a dog. We hope that this work will inspire future efforts to match any further quantum factorisation records, should they arise.

Unless it's some dumb font that makes shit harder to read, I couldn't give a shit which font is on my devices.
in reply to MBech

*as long as its a font you like you dont care. Plenty of easy to read fonts that you would absolutely hate if they were enabled by default. Luckily the people who pick default fonts like fonts enough to choose good ones.
in reply to frog_brawler

You do give a shit about fonts, you just don't give a shit about discussing font choices.

I assume that if the global choice was something like Papyrus, or Windings, you'd care.

in reply to Alphane Moon

Just want to mention "Leica" font. Bahnschrift comes closest to it.
