Lisbon funicular crash: Portugal declares day of mourning as death toll rises to 17

Portugal has declared a day of national mourning after at least 17 people were killed and 21 others injured when one of Lisbon’s famous funicular cars derailed and crashed into a building on Wednesday evening.

Those killed on the Glória funicular were all adults, according to Margarida Castro Martins, the head of the city’s civil protection agency.

She said the victims’ families would be informed before any names or nationalities were released, but confirmed that those injured in the crash included Portuguese people as well as two Germans, two Spaniards and one person each from Canada, Cape Verde, France, Italy, Morocco, South Korea and Switzerland.

in reply to MicroWave

This saddens me greatly. I was in Lisbon about a year ago and rode one of these.

If you don’t know what a funicular is, it’s a very short-range tram that’s specifically designed to take you up or down a certain hill. Lisbon has a lot of steep hills and even cliffs. There is at least one vertical pedestrian elevator that takes you up from one street to another.

Because each hill is different, each funicular is a little different. The incline differs so the shape of the tram car body differs, and the track may curve up the hill or not. They go for different lengths and have different sizes. So each is special and they end up being quite charming and emblematic of the city. If you know the celebrated cable cars of San Francisco, it’s not far off.

Really terrible to hear this news. And as far as I can tell, I rode the very one that crashed with my brother and 8yo son while I was there. My heart goes out to the city and to the families of the victims.

reminder, there are no international laws or agreements banning aid from entering.

there are international laws allowing them to enter.

and any attack on the flotilla on international or Gazan waters is not only a serious war crime, but straight up high seas piracy.

It is mind blowingly insane that European countries, most of them NATO, are cool with a rogue genocidal national practicing high seas piracy in the Mediterranean.

Canada's budget will focus on austerity and investment, says PM Carney

Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney said on Wednesday that the upcoming federal budget would focus on both austerity and investments, adding that current government spending was unsustainable.

Canada has been dealing with economic uncertainty since the start of the year, so the primary focus of the budget will be to cut operational spending and trigger investments into major projects, Carney told reporters in Toronto.

"It's a budget of austerity and investment at the same time and that's possible if you have discipline," he said

https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/canadas-budget-will-focus-austerity-investment-says-pm-carney-2025-09-03/

in reply to FlashMobOfOne

I will not apologise for my idealism in hoping he wasn't, but I can admit when I'm wrong, and I was wrong about Carney. He is a snake.
in reply to cecilkorik

Any time I hear that someone running for office has a background as a banker (particularly of the international variety), I kinda just assume they're a motherfucker. I miss the days when I was more of an idealist. Obama ruined that for me.
in reply to FlashMobOfOne

Carney is a piece of shit but he's still better than pp. I can celebrate that.

Get out of here with your "both sides" shit. They are both shit but they are not equal.
in reply to Typhoon

Say that to people who are about to get austered, just to make Carney's banker golf buddies a little wealthier.

We Americans know where this goes, and after Obama, I'm not willing to acknowledge this bullshit notion that one side is better because it's more publicly polite.

in reply to FlashMobOfOne

As an American you should know better than most both sides are not equal. You have no excuse for your ignorance.
in reply to Typhoon

Oh, I certainly do: Watching Democrats and Republicans vote exactly the same way. Just wait, the Democrats are about to decline to shut down Donald's government again, and then see if you can still gaslight yourself into thinking there's any real difference.

Imagine having the power to limit fascism, even temporarily, and just saying: "Nah, don't feel like it."

That's the Democratic Party.

Questa voce è stata modificata (6 giorni fa)
in reply to FlashMobOfOne

What the fuck are you talking about? Both sides are bad but only one is actively rounding up legal immigrants and sending them to concentration camps or El Salvador. They are not the same.

There are shades of grey here that you seem unable to comprehend. One party is measurably better than the other.

in reply to Typhoon

Picking the less worst option over the actual worst option are both roads that lead to the same place, one is a little longer and has better scenery, but the destination you end up at is the same either way.

Picking either one means you're going the wrong direction entirely.

in reply to Typhoon

They are effectively equal. Kang is not better than Kodos and Kodos is not better than Kang. That's the point. Having two choices is not enough when they are both working for the billionaires, not for you. The details of which billionaires they're working for, and what specifically they will do to make your life hell, is frankly pretty much irrelevant and debating whether one choice is going to cause slightly less suffering than the other is like starving people fighting over scraps in a garbage can. Demand better. Do better.
in reply to cecilkorik

Losing $5 and losing $100 are both bad but I know which one I'd pick. They are not equal and insisting they are is what led us here today.

The better solution is not to lose any money at all, and in the long term that's the goal. But in the mean time I'll pick $5 every time.

in reply to Typhoon

It doesn't matter if it's $100 and $99, or $100 and $0.01, my point is there are more than those two options. There are in fact a nearly infinite variety of options. You just have to decide that you want a third option. Stop picking between two bad options if you don't want bad options.
in reply to cecilkorik

Realistically those are the only two options. Voting for Bernie Sanders or the NDP would not have changed a single thing and wishing won't make it so. And if enough people don't vote for the lesser evil you risk the worse one winning. That's how the world ended up with Trump.
in reply to Typhoon

Think longer term. How did the stage get set for this outcome? How could someone like Trump get elected in a healthy and properly functioning democracy? This is a consequence that was decades in the making, at least. Maybe being "realistic" about what we think we can achieve is what got us into this mess. Maybe we need to start questioning this "reality", because it doesn't seem to be working out very well for us. Maybe wishing for something better is our only hope. Or maybe it's the first step to something actually better.
in reply to FlashMobOfOne

That piece of shit literally just called all of Palestine a "Hamas state". Carney is a fucking prick and does not stand for working Canadians, but I wouldn't punch him in the face as hard as I'd punch the other motherfucker.
in reply to FlashMobOfOne

With the shut down of US science, he's cutting already very weak CDN science support because he knows scientists have nowhere to go now. That's a special type of asshole, especially after Trudeau failed to meet inflation with research agency budgets. I guess I should work on bombs now.

Secretive North Korea has never revealed her name or age, but South Korean intelligence officials believe she is the daughter identified as Ju Ae by former American basketball player Dennis Rodman

Thailand's ruling party seeks snap election to thwart rival's PM bid

  • Ruling party targets house dissolution as rival gains crucial support
  • Renegade party Bhumjaithai wins support of largest force in parliament
  • Thailand in deadlock for days since PM's dismissal by court
    • Dominant Shinawatra dynasty's struggling to win backing to rule

BANGKOK, Sept 3 (Reuters) - The leader of Thailand's Bhumjaithai Party said on Wednesday he had enough votes to become prime minister after winning over the biggest group in parliament, as the ruling party moved to block his path by petitioning the king to approve a snap election.

There has been a dramatic scramble for power in Thailand since Friday's sacking of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra by a court, with Pheu Thai, the long dominant ruling party of the billionaire Shinawatra political dynasty, clinging on desperately to avert a humiliating fall from grace.

UAE official warns Israel West Bank settlement plans cross 'red line'

  • Annexation in West Bank would undermine spirit of normalisation accords with Israel, UAE envoy tells Reuters
  • UAE's criticism touches on Israeli plans to build settlement dividing West Bank
  • Far-right Israeli minister says maps being drafted for annexing territory in West Bank

DUBAI, Sept 3 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates warned Israel on Wednesday that annexation in the occupied West Bank would constitute a "red line" for Abu Dhabi that would severely undermine the spirit of the Abraham Accords that normalised UAE-Israeli relations.

The comments by the UAE, the most prominent of the three Arab states that signed the accords with Israel when President Donald Trump was first in office, amounted to Abu Dhabi's sharpest criticism of Israel since the Gaza war erupted in 2023, when Hamas launched its cross-border raid from the enclave.

Russia says it captures 'about half' of Ukrainian city Kupiansk, Kyiv denies report

MOSCOW, Sept 3 (Reuters) - Russia's defence ministry said on Wednesday that its troops had captured "about half" of the city of Kupiansk in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region, but Ukraine's military denied any such advance.

Reuters could not independently confirm the battlefield reports from either side.

Kupiansk has been the focus of months of increased Russian military activity and heavy fighting. Russian troops captured the city in the early weeks of their February 2022 invasion and Ukrainian forces took it back later that same year.

Much of the city has been destroyed as Moscow tries to seize it back as part of a slow advance westward along parts of the 1,000-km (620-mile) long frontline.

Sask. RCMP raid 'Queen of Canada' cult compound, arrest 17 adults

Officers seized 4 replica firearms, no charges laid as of Wednesday afternoon

Saskatchewan RCMP arrested 17 adults, including cult leader Romana Didulo, in the village of Richmound on Wednesday after a firearms investigation.

At a news conference on Wednesday afternoon in Regina, Insp. Ashley St. Germaine said RCMP executed a search warrant at a privately owned decommissioned school in Richmound at around 4:30 a.m CST.

Didulo and her followers have been living for two years in the village of approximately 118 people, located 365 kilometres west of Regina, near the Alberta border.

Germaine said RCMP got a report on Aug. 25 of one of the building's occupants possessing a firearm. That led to the investigation that culminated in the raid.

"A team of skilled and experienced senior officers was established to oversee this large and complex operation," she said.

More than 30 police vehicles from multiple jurisdictions, including two tactical vehicles, were at the scene, Germaine said.

A livestream video, posted by Didulo to her followers on Telegram at 5:51 a.m. CST on Wednesday, captured the moment when two officers wearing tactical gear burst into a room where Didulo was standing.

"Leave the phone down. You're under arrest," one officer says in the video.

Didulo surrenders to officers and the camera is pointed at the floor for a few minutes. Voices off camera then remark that the phone is livestreaming before the video ends.

My buddies father in law was the mayor of that town when this shit all started. I wonder if he still is.

He told me they got family members of his wife to turn against them in town meetings, like HARD, like never talk to your brothers again bad.

in reply to Stamau123

They're fruits, but I'm betting "replica firearms" means "black powder". Yes, they can certainly be deadly, but my god, if you're never used black power, it's a monster pain in the ass. I can get a total of 3 or 4 shots off, reloading each time of course, and the barrel is too filthy to shove the next ball in.

BP guns are such a joke, even felonious Americans can own them, and most states allow them to be shipped straight to your porch. I have never heard of a crime being committed with one. LOL, it's like California banning modern .50cal guns. Has anyone in the history of ever used a .50BMG to crime?! OK, except Israel.

At least 15 dead after Lisbon's historic funicular derails

At least 15 people have been killed and 18 others injured after a carriage on Lisbon's famous Gloria funicular derailed and crashed, emergency services said.

Portugal's emergency medical service authority said that five of those injured were in a serious condition. The remaining thirteen, including a child, sustained minor injuries.

Several people were earlier said to have been trapped at the scene. They have all since been freed, authorities said.

Spain's Prime Minster Pedro Sánchez said he was "appalled by the terrible accident". Lisbon's mayor, Carlos Moedas, said the capital was "in mourning", adding it was a "tragic moment for the city".

Emergency services said foreigners were among those killed were, although nationalities could not be confirmed.

It is unclear how many people were on board at the time of the cable railway crash, which occurred near the Avenida da Liberdade around 18:05 on Wednesday evening.

Footage shared widely on social media showed the bright yellow carriage overturned and almost entirely destroyed. People could be seen fleeing the area on foot as what appears to be smoke filled the air.

One witness told Portuguese newspaper Observador the vehicle was "out of control, without brakes".

in reply to Stamau123

Judging by the location it crashed and somebody interviewed saying that "they were afraid it would hit the vehicle below", it careened down for quite a distance since it crashed near the bottom.

Mind you, that specific funicular doesn't actual travel that much of a distance (maybe 400m if I remember correctly - it's been a long time since I had a reason to go to that part of Lisbon).

Also because it's not that long a distance, it's actually faster to just walk it up or down for most people than wait for it, plus this was the one coming down (as deduced from there being one below), so it's quite likely that most people in it were tourists.

Eclissi Totale di Luna: Pubblica Osservazione a Faenza
Dom 19:00 - 22:00
Gruppo Astrofili Faenza APS

French winemaker jailed for multimillion-euro fake champagne scam

in reply to Davriellelouna

Wasn't made in champagne. Straight to jail
Questa voce è stata modificata (6 giorni fa)
in reply to icelimit

Could have been but it's actually more than that:
he produced fake champagne on purpose, using wines from Spain, carbonated it and added flavour packs. He then marketed it as champagne and even attempted to export it. Once caught, he fled to Morocco to start a new business.

Real Champagne actually follow a lot of rules besides the protected origin, it's a blend of wines but it's not supposed to be carbonated, and flavor balance is to be made only with specific liqueurs.

in reply to Davriellelouna

Spain produces a lot of high quality wine, but also a lot of lower quality wine, used for mixing to make cheap "table" wine. Much of that is exported, often in cartons.

Many French winemakers have been importing that type of wine for decades to mix to increase volume in lower quality wines.

Donald Trump says Israel has lost its 'total control' over US Congress

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/35636163

the full interview transcript is here (archive)

::: spoiler the part of it about israel
REESE: A different war, Israel, a March Pew Poll, found that 53% of surveyed U.S. adults had an unfavorable view of Israel, that’s down – or that is up from 42% in 2022. Among young Republicans under 50, 50% have an unfavorable view of Israel. That’s up from 35% in 2022. There’s a growing group within the MAGA, America First coalition, Republicans, especially younger Republicans, who are skeptical of our support for Israel. Are you aware of this group? Are you worried about it?

TRUMP: Yeah I’m aware of it. So, Israel is amazing, because, you know, I have good support from Israel. I have. Look, nobody has done more for Israel than I have, including the recent attacks with Iran, wiping that thing out. We, that plane, wiped them out like nobody ever saw before. You know, we got back and CNN was trying to say ‘well, maybe it wasn’t complete,’ and it turned out totally complete, beyond complete. But when, if you go back 20 years. I mean, I will tell you, Israel had the strongest lobby in Congress of anything or body, or of any company or corporation or state that I’ve ever seen. Israel was the strongest. Today, it doesn’t have that strong a lobby. It’s amazing.

There was a time where you couldn’t speak bad, if you wanted to be a politician, you couldn’t speak badly. But today, you have, you know, AOC plus three, and you have all these lunatics, and they’ve really, they’ve changed it. You’re too young to know this, but if you go back 15 years, probably that’s when it started, right. Israel, you would understand this very much, Israel was the strongest lobby I’ve ever seen. They had total control over Congress, and now they don’t, you know, I’m a little surprised to see that. And people, they forgot about October 7th. You know, October 7th was a truly horrible day, because I’ve seen the pictures.

REESE: I was just over in Israel, and we went right up to the war where you could hear the bombs dropping in Gaza. And we went to the places from October 7th. Scary. Being in it. I understand —

TRUMP: It was a really bad one, right?

REESE: Yeah.

TRUMP: And you know, you have people that deny it ever happened, they’re deniers. You have people that deny the Holocaust ever happened. So, they’re gonna have to get that war over with. But it is hurting Israel. There’s no question about it. They may be winning the war, but they’re not winning the world of public relations, you know, and it is hurting them. But Israel was the strongest lobby 15 years ago that there has ever been, and now it’s, it’s been hurt, especially in Congress.
:::

in reply to Arthur Besse

(Some) People are up in arms about Russian meddling in the west, but Israel has been doing it since the 40's and no one batted an eyelash.

The fact that some (many?) Jewish lawmakers and military are allowed to have dual Israeli/US citizenship is baffling to me.
