Israeli Supreme Court orders government to stop starving Palestinian prisoners
ISRAEL’S SUPREME COURT has ruled that the government has failed to provide Palestinian security prisoners with adequate food for basic subsistence, and ordered authorities to improve their nutrition.
The decision was a rare case in which the country’s highest court ruled against the government’s conduct in Gaza in recent years.
Since October 2023, Israel has seized thousands of people in Gaza that it suspects of links to Hamas. Thousands have also been released without charge, often after months of detention.
Rights groups have documented widespread abuse in prisons and detention facilities, including insufficient food and health care, as well as poor sanitary conditions and beatings.
Israel also routinely detains children and prosecutes them in military courts, a practice long-condemned by human rights organisations and the United Nations. The most common charge is for throwing stones, which can carry a 20-year sentence.

The general Israeli populace needs to come to terms with the fact that their government is now committing a very specific war crime that makes their prisons for Palestinians look like Nazi concentration camps.
There is no positive way to spin this. Starving prisoners is literally what the Nazis did.
So much for the paperless office: UK government inks £900M deal for printers etc.
The UK government has awarded 12 suppliers places on a framework deal that could see it spend up to £900 million on printers, photocopiers, and other multifunctional devices. In a sign that the dream of a paperless office is receding ever further into the distance, the Crown Commercial Service – the buying unit under the umbrella of the Cabinet Office – has put together the agreement for four years, giving public sector bodies access to discounts based on nominal volume commitments to suppliers.

Honestly don't understand the protests. The government should ban social media sites that don't comply with basic safety regulations.
Of course, regardless of the original cause, now that the government has executed 14 protesters, that will be the cause.
Basic safety regulations? I just skimmed the 2023 act and that shit was never gonna fly, and it feels like that was the point. Basically the only way way anyone can comply is to branch off a Nepal version of their site and do whatever they're told.
And I don't know why we'd be acting high and mighty here. mastodon and presumably lemmy are blocked along with the rest.
The Untold Saga of What Happened When DOGE Stormed Social Security

- Missed Opportunity: Some Social Security officials said they welcomed DOGE — the agency needs a technological overhaul — only to see DOGE ignore them and prioritize quick (often empty) wins.
- Internal Revolt: Leland Dudek, the agency’s then acting chief, helped DOGE at first, then tried to resist when he saw what it was doing, Dudek said in 15 hours of candid interviews.
- DOGE Lives On: Multiple former DOGErs have taken permanent roles at the Social Security Administration, and Senate-confirmed Commissioner Frank Bisignano has embraced its approach.

EU asylum applications drop by 23% in first half of 2025
In the first half of 2025, applications seeking asylum in the European Union dropped by 23%, the EU's asylum agency said Monday.
The Malta-based European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) said 399,000 new applications were lodged between January and June, down 114,000, or 23%, from the same period in 2024.
Germany lost its spot as the most preferred country for asylum seekers and saw the biggest decline in asylum applications standing at a 43% drop.
It was followed by followed by Italy and Spain, which saw 25% and 13% declines, respectively.

The far right will take credit for this, even though it has probably little to do with it—if anything, only indirectly.
But let them: it will then be even easier to identify their hate speech against foreigners as a key factor in the shortage of skilled workers.
In Germany, for example, there are approximately 68,000 doctors from abroad, a significant proportion of whom (approximately 6,500) come from Syria and entered the country as asylum seekers (source).
So it would be great if we could finally shift the migration debate away from mindless racism and toward meaningful politics—not only because racism is repugnant, but also for purely practical reasons: with dull-witted Nazis, the future cannot be secured; that much is certain.

Germany's government is also pointing out that the nation needs 100's of thousands of skilled workers to fill jobs. The local training services aren't seeking the enrollments needed to fill the jobs, so where do they come from?
The usual suspects are in huge demand (MSTEM fields), but also anyone skilled in the trades is in high demand.
That's not the same as asylum seekers in general, but with falling birthrates, the EU must import people or the current models must change away from oligarchy-oriented capitalism. Given how the rich people move the decision making, but those same people push right wing populism to oppress populations, they end up in a cleft fork: not enough local workers to feed the baby crushing machine, while requiring xenophobia to maintain their power base. Once the situation becomes untenable, they turn to fascism to maintain their power.
Tough times ahead, just like usual.

What the fuck did you expect, Israel? What the fuck did you actually expect? The only surprise is that this is such a rare occurrence. So long as you keep in place apartheid and occupation you will be dealing with violence. So long as you oppress and genocide people you will have to deal with shit exactly like this. There is no way that you would externalize violence completely without some of it coming back to hurt you.
And to fucking western apartheid enablers and Zionist apologists: see what the fuck you're doing? This blood is on your hands too. Every time you cajole Israeli maximalism and Jewish supremacy, each time you enable the occupation and apartheid and genocide to continue you're preparing the next random act of violence against Jewish civilians too.
This is your mess. You shit this bed, you clean this up. And have no fucking illusions: there is only one way out of this mess and it's to finally get it drilled into your fucking heads that Palestinian lives matter. So long as you operate from a premise that they don't, this is the shit you'll be dealing with.
EDIT:
Meanwhile, in Gaza: "6 more Palestinians, including 2 children, die of malnutrition", while the BBC Middle East page has the following headlines:

- Thousands throng Jerusalem to press Netanyahu to make hostage release deal
- Greta Thunberg's Gaza flotilla arrives in Tunisia

5 Israelis dead, front and centre. 6 (more) Palestinians, including 2 kids? Got to go into the details. That's what I mean. Palestinian lives don't matter to apartheid enablers. So long as that's true, well the fuck do you expect?

Non fare come me! Tu devi amare!”
Sempre in mezzo i Potery Forty, come li chiamava papà.
Internet disruptions in Middle East and South Asia after Red Sea cable cuts
In a status update published to its website, Microsoft said “network traffic traversing through the Middle East may experience increased latency due to undersea fiber cuts in the Red Sea”.
The global software giant said its Azure cloud computing services, the world’s second largest after Amazon, were affected by the cuts but added that general network traffic was not impacted.
On Sunday morning, the Houthis’ Al Masirah TV acknowledged the cuts, citing NetBlocks. Microsoft’s Azure has been storing information, including intercepted Palestinian phone calls in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip for Israel’s military, according to an investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call.

Activity Pub: Can I join a PeerTube or Mastodon server using a Lemmy account?
Hey, I am currently trying to understand a bit better what the Activity Pub allows and what it doesn't as I am preparing a presentation on that topic.
On Lemmy I can join other servers without having to recreate an account. Does that also work for across Activity Pub supporting software? Could I join a PeerTube page and then post there? Could I upload videos? Could I join Mastodon or Pixelfed and post images?
like this
Quick clarification, because I can't tell from your words if you're confused about the concept of federation or not 😅
If by "join" other servers you mean use their site as if logged in, or like you have an account there, then that is not federation. That's single-sign-on (SSO) and is not a feature of the fediverse (Mastodon, Lemmy, Peertube, etc). That would be like the "login with Facebook" or Google buttons around, where by having this account on site A, you can instantly signup on site B without making a new password or anything. That's not how federation works.
Federation is like email. I can have an email with GMail, you can have one with Proton, and someone else can have Yahoo, and I can send an email to you anyway. It doesn't mean I can "join" Proton with my GMail account, it doesn't mean I have a Yahoo account, it means I don't need a Yahoo account to communicate with Yahoo users.
But, if by "join" you meant "join a community" as in subscribe to updates from a group on another server, then most other people's answers apply. I wouldn't call that "joining a server", though, because servers host many communities and you're not joining all of them.
Joining a community works like joining a mailing list. Activity Pub allows accounts on different servers to communicate without an account on their own server, so my account would send a message to your account saying "I'd like to subscribe to this community, send me a message whenever something happens on it", and then the other server says "okay, will do", and then after that will periodically send my server messages saying "hey, here's that update you asked for". And when I comment, like right now, it's like an email being sent from my server to yours, and then your server puts it into the history.
This allows my server to present the community from your server to me, without me having account on your server. Without me having to "join" your server, I'd say.
like this
And so I'd say this also answers your broader questions. Since Activity Pub doesn't allow me to join other servers, it also doesn't allow me to join other sites.
So a Lemmy post may be compatible with a Mastodon message sent to a group or something, that's only because the messages Activity Pub sends are similar. But PeerTube is different software with different buttons, and the existence of those buttons on PeerTube doesn't change anything about what buttons Lemmy has, and I can't "login" to a PeerTube server with my Lemmy account, so I don't gain any special abilities outside of what Lemmy can do.
The only way it would be possible is if Lemmy added a feature for uploading videos that sent the same kinds of messages to other servers that PeerTube sends. Then, if they did that, someone on a PeerTube instance could see these messages coming from Lemmy and interpret them on their server as a PeerTube video or something.
But all that Activity Pub allows is exchanging of information between sites. For them to interoperate in a way that makes sense, they need to exchange the same kind of information.

Good response! You were right. I thought that it would work similarly to SSO i.e. your instance works as an identity provider and your content is then generated on the other page, not send there.
Alright, so following the mail metaphor: lemmy is unable to send a video attachment so it can't allow you to upload videos to peertube; however, activity pub could allow for that.
I think I have to read up on the exact definition of "group".
Maybe I should create a new post for this but has there ever been discussions regarding SSO? So you have one identity across all fediverse services?
Alright, so following the mail metaphor: lemmy is unable to send a video attachment so it can't allow you to upload videos to peertube; however, activity pub could allow for that
I'm not sure that would be the correct metaphore. Lemmy can send video attachement. But your lemmy account is not allowed to upload peertube so you can't send any video.
There is also an economical reason : a video is ressource hungry.
So it is limited to watchimg peertube video.
In my opinion this is the biggest shortcoming of the ActivityHub ecosystem. That's not to say it should have been solved by now, since I don't know how to decentralize authentication safely. And after using it for a while I'm not sure I want a single account.
But it is a challenge facing newcomers and those trying to recruit them. This group of services is already tough to explain sometimes, and telling them it all interconnects just muddies the waters when you have to explain that it's not the way they expect.
