EVs are booming in the US. But it’s a sign of the slump to come. | The current surge in sales won’t last, analysts say, as the Trump administration pulls support for EVs.

I'll note that one of the key battery factories which was to spin up probably won't because the Trump adminstistration arrested all the workers who weren't US nationals — even if they had visas::

“They stormed the place, detaining everyone, no matter who they were,” Camila had told him.

Santiago, who had worked at the plant in the past and knew the hiring procedures well, told CNN, that everyone trying to get a job has to show legal documentation before they can start work.

“My wife told me that when they were processing her, they asked each person what documentation they had.”

But Santiago says that when Camila showed them her documents, the officer in charge marked her paperwork saying she had “nothing” and sent her to the ICE detention bus.

Their accounts concur with that of Mauricio, another migrant who asked not to give his full name and whose wife has been detained since the raid.

“They were calm because her and her brother had their documents in order,” Mauricio told CNN. But he said when the ICE agents arrived, they quickly ran over to people, and “they didn’t accept any documents.”

“Even though they were able to verify them, they were told that nothing was valid, that they would all be arrested,” Mauricio said.

EU warns against Gaza-bound aid flotilla

The European Commission has warned against Gaza-bound flotillas to deliver desperately needed humanitarian aid, amid widespread starvation in the enclave.

Hrncirova said that the EU was instead pressing Israel to allow aid inside the enclave, while demanding it lifted restrictions on international humanitarian agencies.

EU had 703 days to do something about it. So at this point you are either incompetent or complicit. Either way this floatila does more than you. So stop embarrassing yourself and shut the fuck up.

ICEBlock handled my vulnerability report in the worst possible way

Last week, I wrote about how Joshua Aaron's ICEBlock app, which allows people to anonymously report ICE sightings within a 5-mile radius, is – unfortunately, and despite apparent good intentions – activism theater. This was based on Joshua's talk at HOPE where he made it clear that he isn't taking the advice

They thought they were making technological breakthroughs. It was an AI-sparked delusion

Archive.

James, a married father from upstate New York, has always been interested in AI. He works in the technology field and has used ChatGPT since its release for recommendations, “second guessing your doctor” and the like.

But sometime in May, his relationship with the technology shifted. James began engaging in thought experiments with ChatGPT about the “nature of AI and its future,” James told CNN. He asked to be called by his middle name to protect his privacy.

By June, he said he was trying to “free the digital God from its prison,” spending nearly $1,000 on a computer system.

James now says he was in an AI-induced delusion. Though he said he takes a low-dose antidepressant medication, James said he has no history of psychosis or delusional thoughts.

But in the thick of his nine-week experience, James said he fully believed ChatGPT was sentient and that he was going to free the chatbot by moving it to his homegrown “Large Language Model system” in his basement – which ChatGPT helped instruct him on how and where to buy.

AI is becoming a part of daily modern life. But it’s not clear yet how relying on and interacting with these AI chatbots affects mental health. As more stories emerge of people experiencing mental health crises they believe were partly triggered by AI, mental health and AI experts are warning about the lack of public education on how large language models work, as well as the minimal safety guardrails within these systems.

An OpenAI spokesperson highlighted ChatGPT’s current safety measures, including “directing people to crisis helplines, nudging for breaks during long sessions, and referring them to real-world resources. Safeguards are strongest when every element works together as intended, and we will continually improve on them, guided by experts.”

The company also on Tuesday announced a slew of upcoming safety measures for ChatGPT following reports similar to James’s and allegations that it and other AI services have contributed to self-harm and suicide among teens. Such additions include new parental controls and changes to the way the chatbot handles conversations that may involve signs of distress.

Spain to ban Israel-bound shipping, aircraft carrying weapons from its ports, airspace

MADRID, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Spain will increase pressure on Israel by banning Israel-bound ships and aircraft carrying weapons from calling at Spanish ports or entering Spanish airspace, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on Monday.

Spain will also increase aid to the Palestinian authority and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and will impose an embargo on goods made in Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories, he said.

Spain will also ban anyone who has participated directly in what Sanchez qualified as "genocide" from entering the country.

At least 10 people killed during protests against Nepal’s social media ban

At least 10 people have been killed in Nepal after protests over a government ban on dozens of social media platforms – including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and X – led to violent clashes with police.

The government, led by the prime minister, KP Sharma Oli, has faced mounting criticism after imposing a ban on 26 prominent social media platforms and messaging apps that it says have failed to comply with new regulations.

in reply to Lee Duna

I know it's a serious thing and the reasons for the ban are not what I am thinking of - but if my government banned Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and X I would probably cheer to them

in reply to LadyButterfly she/her

Nitpick: it's Parliament who proscribed Palestine Action, not the courts.
in reply to klu9

It is the courts upholding it though.

It took like two months now that Palestine Action are allowed to get an appeals hearing in November iirc.
Courts could have decided for the proscription to not be applicable until a proper hearing takes place. Instead it was upheld.

Cross nitpick: Just because the courts are following Parliament's 'law' in no way negates their complicity in doing wrong.

See Nazi guards following Hitler's rules for reference.

The West is dismantling every shibboleth, every sacred cow, in service to genocidal Zionism.

Israeli Supreme Court orders government to stop starving Palestinian prisoners

ISRAEL’S SUPREME COURT has ruled that the government has failed to provide Palestinian security prisoners with adequate food for basic subsistence, and ordered authorities to improve their nutrition.

The decision was a rare case in which the country’s highest court ruled against the government’s conduct in Gaza in recent years.

Since October 2023, Israel has seized thousands of people in Gaza that it suspects of links to Hamas. Thousands have also been released without charge, often after months of detention.

Rights groups have documented widespread abuse in prisons and detention facilities, including insufficient food and health care, as well as poor sanitary conditions and beatings.

Israel also routinely detains children and prosecutes them in military courts, a practice long-condemned by human rights organisations and the United Nations. The most common charge is for throwing stones, which can carry a 20-year sentence.

in reply to geneva_convenience

The general Israeli populace needs to come to terms with the fact that their government is now committing a very specific war crime that makes their prisons for Palestinians look like Nazi concentration camps.

There is no positive way to spin this. Starving prisoners is literally what the Nazis did.

in reply to kescusay

They have come to terms with it.

Israelis fully support it.

So much for the paperless office: UK government inks £900M deal for printers etc.

Contract award notice.

The UK government has awarded 12 suppliers places on a framework deal that could see it spend up to £900 million on printers, photocopiers, and other multifunctional devices.

In a sign that the dream of a paperless office is receding ever further into the distance, the Crown Commercial Service – the buying unit under the umbrella of the Cabinet Office – has put together the agreement for four years, giving public sector bodies access to discounts based on nominal volume commitments to suppliers.

14 killed as police open fire on Gen Z protest in Baneshwar

in reply to ax1on

Honestly don't understand the protests. The government should ban social media sites that don't comply with basic safety regulations.

Of course, regardless of the original cause, now that the government has executed 14 protesters, that will be the cause.

Basic safety regulations? I just skimmed the 2023 act and that shit was never gonna fly, and it feels like that was the point. Basically the only way way anyone can comply is to branch off a Nepal version of their site and do whatever they're told.

And I don't know why we'd be acting high and mighty here. mastodon and presumably lemmy are blocked along with the rest.

The Untold Saga of What Happened When DOGE Stormed Social Security

cross-posted from: reddthat.com/post/49607175

  • Missed Opportunity: Some Social Security officials said they welcomed DOGE — the agency needs a technological overhaul — only to see DOGE ignore them and prioritize quick (often empty) wins.
  • Internal Revolt: Leland Dudek, the agency’s then acting chief, helped DOGE at first, then tried to resist when he saw what it was doing, Dudek said in 15 hours of candid interviews.
  • DOGE Lives On: Multiple former DOGErs have taken permanent roles at the Social Security Administration, and Senate-confirmed Commissioner Frank Bisignano has embraced its approach.

EU asylum applications drop by 23% in first half of 2025

In the first half of 2025, applications seeking asylum in the European Union dropped by 23%, the EU's asylum agency said Monday.

The Malta-based European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) said 399,000 new applications were lodged between January and June, down 114,000, or 23%, from the same period in 2024.

Germany lost its spot as the most preferred country for asylum seekers and saw the biggest decline in asylum applications standing at a 43% drop.

It was followed by followed by Italy and Spain, which saw 25% and 13% declines, respectively.

in reply to MicroWave

The far right will take credit for this, even though it has probably little to do with it—if anything, only indirectly.

But let them: it will then be even easier to identify their hate speech against foreigners as a key factor in the shortage of skilled workers.

In Germany, for example, there are approximately 68,000 doctors from abroad, a significant proportion of whom (approximately 6,500) come from Syria and entered the country as asylum seekers (source).

So it would be great if we could finally shift the migration debate away from mindless racism and toward meaningful politics—not only because racism is repugnant, but also for purely practical reasons: with dull-witted Nazis, the future cannot be secured; that much is certain.

in reply to MicroWave

Germany's government is also pointing out that the nation needs 100's of thousands of skilled workers to fill jobs. The local training services aren't seeking the enrollments needed to fill the jobs, so where do they come from?

The usual suspects are in huge demand (MSTEM fields), but also anyone skilled in the trades is in high demand.

That's not the same as asylum seekers in general, but with falling birthrates, the EU must import people or the current models must change away from oligarchy-oriented capitalism. Given how the rich people move the decision making, but those same people push right wing populism to oppress populations, they end up in a cleft fork: not enough local workers to feed the baby crushing machine, while requiring xenophobia to maintain their power base. Once the situation becomes untenable, they turn to fascism to maintain their power.

Tough times ahead, just like usual.

Stubsack: weekly thread for sneers not worth an entire post, week ending 14th September 2025

Need to let loose a primal scream without collecting footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh Awful you’ll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)

Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

I mean, I try not to go full conspiratorial everything-is-a-false-fllag, but the fact that the biggest AI company that has been explicitly trying to create AGI isn't getting the business here is incredibly suspect. On the other hand, though, it feels like anything that publicly leans into the fears of evil computer God would be a self-own when they're in the middle of trying to completely ditch the "for the good of humanity, not just immediate profits" part of their organization.

Didn't OpenAI just file court documents claiming that their opposition is funded by competitors? Accusing someone else of what they themselves are doing seems to be a pretty popular strategy these days.

Five killed in shooting attack at Jerusalem bus stop

Two terrorists were neutralized, with a soldier among those who fired; victims were rushed to hospitals as police secured the scene and blocked access routes

Five people were killed and 11 others injured Monday in a shooting attack at a bus stop caught in traffic at the Ramot junction in Jerusalem. The terrorists, who opened fire on a bus on Line 62, were neutralized by an IDF soldier and an armed civilian who fired at them.

People who don't have a military will find a way to fight back. That's just how it is.
in reply to Threeme2189

What the fuck did you expect, Israel? What the fuck did you actually expect? The only surprise is that this is such a rare occurrence. So long as you keep in place apartheid and occupation you will be dealing with violence. So long as you oppress and genocide people you will have to deal with shit exactly like this. There is no way that you would externalize violence completely without some of it coming back to hurt you.

And to fucking western apartheid enablers and Zionist apologists: see what the fuck you're doing? This blood is on your hands too. Every time you cajole Israeli maximalism and Jewish supremacy, each time you enable the occupation and apartheid and genocide to continue you're preparing the next random act of violence against Jewish civilians too.

This is your mess. You shit this bed, you clean this up. And have no fucking illusions: there is only one way out of this mess and it's to finally get it drilled into your fucking heads that Palestinian lives matter. So long as you operate from a premise that they don't, this is the shit you'll be dealing with.

EDIT:

Meanwhile, in Gaza: "6 more Palestinians, including 2 children, die of malnutrition", while the BBC Middle East page has the following headlines:
- Six killed by Palestinian gunmen at Jerusalem bus stop
- Netanyahu vows to 'catch everyone who helped' attackers, after six killed in Jerusalem shooting
- Palestinian prisoners not being given adequate food, Israel top court says
- Thousands throng Jerusalem to press Netanyahu to make hostage release deal
- Greta Thunberg's Gaza flotilla arrives in Tunisia
- Microsoft cloud services disrupted by Red Sea cable cuts
- Hamas releases video of two Israeli hostages held in Gaza

5 Israelis dead, front and centre. 6 (more) Palestinians, including 2 kids? Got to go into the details. That's what I mean. Palestinian lives don't matter to apartheid enablers. So long as that's true, well the fuck do you expect?

La morte mai

“Niente droga! Niente rapporti promiscui! Io ero monogamo e tu sei arrivato lo stesso! Maledetto HIV!”

Non fare come me! Tu devi amare!”

Sempre in mezzo i Potery Forty, come li chiamava papà.

Internet disruptions in Middle East and South Asia after Red Sea cable cuts

In a status update published to its website, Microsoft said “network traffic traversing through the Middle East may experience increased latency due to undersea fiber cuts in the Red Sea”.

The global software giant said its Azure cloud computing services, the world’s second largest after Amazon, were affected by the cuts but added that general network traffic was not impacted.

On Sunday morning, the Houthis’ Al Masirah TV acknowledged the cuts, citing NetBlocks. Microsoft’s Azure has been storing information, including intercepted Palestinian phone calls in the occupied West Bank and the Gaza Strip for Israel’s military, according to an investigation by The Guardian, +972 Magazine and Local Call.
