Oh, I thought Telegram does encrypt chats, just that you have to enable it rather than it being on be default. Is encryption only available for one-on-one messages?

Yesterday, I did a fresh install of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on my NVidia-powered machine (GeForce GTX 1060 6gb). When installing, I enabled Secure Boot.
By default, the distribution comes with nouveau drivers, and the process of installing official NVidia drivers is outlined here: en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_dri…
I successfully added openSUSE-repos-Tumbleweed-NVIDIA as per the guide; first oddity is that by default it shipped with openSUSE-repos-MicroOS-NVIDIA, which got uninstalled as a conflicting package, despite this being Tumbleweed. (I later tried to rollback and do these steps with openSUSE-repos-MicroOS-NVIDIA installed instead, to no avail)
Next, as per the guide, I tried to do zypper install-new-recommends. After installation, I rebooted the machine. Upon login, resolution was forced to low.
inxi -G has shown N/A in the driver field.
I've rolled back via snapper rollback, confirmed that nouveau drivers are back in place (resolution was back to normal, inxi -G has shown nouveau), and tried to install nvidia-video-G6 using YaST. It has automatically installed all dependencies as well.
Upon login, I faced the same issue - resolution degradation and N/A in the driver field.
Troubleshooting for this issue has shown that secure boot may not allow these drivers to be launched without importing the respective key, as listed in the same Nvidia drivers article. However, the file that needs to be imported is not at the suggested location (/usr/share/nvidia-pubkeys/); in fact, /usr/share only had nvidia folder, which didn't seem to contain any keys.
As a workaround, I attempted to disable secure boot by entering: mokutil --disable-validation. A menu appeared on reboot, through which I disabled secure boot. Further launches had "launching in insecure mode" notice. mokutil --sb-state output is SecureBoot disabled.
Then, I tried to install the driver again, as described above. Still no luck, and same issue.
So, what else could be the issue and what do I do about it next? Thank you in advance for any replies!
Solution that worked: instead of going for install-new-recommends, install the following package:
nvidia-driver-G06-kmp-meta
It should be available by default, but if not, add the respective repository by using this command:
sudo modprobe nvidia gives the following output: modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'nvidia': No such device

P.P.S. Wait, it gets worse! The main way to install the proprietary driver is through install-new-recommends, BUT this installs open drivers on unsupported cards! This may be a good reason for a bug report once I figure the rest out.
Look, SUSE is world renowned for decades for being one of the most reliable and stable distro to exist. It’s, basically, the “other” red hat. And it has better Nvidia support than most other distro.
I have nothing but the fullest confidence that you’ll figure this problem out. As i like to say to friends of mine: Linux is a learning experience.
With many distributions, it's plug&play now, but some still make trouble out of it.
In the case of SUSE, this seems to stem from heavy open-source advocacy and EU laws coming on top of it, which is respectable, but adds to the complexity of solving issues here and there.
I mean, I get that, but I’m not sure that is the source of your present issues. Like, it’s a thing that that’s worth consideration. We don’t get to just use products anymore. We have to consider where they come from and who makes them. And I’m pretty cool with SUSE and how the Germans do their Linux. It was the first distribution I used after red hat back in, like, 1997. I have a deep love for that distribution. I don’t use it because it doesn’t happen to be the correct distribution for my needs. But I often would like to. It’s it’s a nice distribution, very smooth and professional. OpenSUSE basically the “other” fedora.
Thing: I fucking hate YAST with a goddamn passion. I FUCKING HATE IT. Why do I hate it? Because of everything I just hate it. I’m much prefer to use a APT, despite the fact that it’s incredibly antiquated.

Nah, YaST is still a piece of crap imo, both antique and impractical for most purposes. They should either make it modern and user-friendly, or phase it out.
That said, it kinda helped me to locate the correct system package this time.
In any case, OpenSUSE Slowroll is already my daily driver on laptop, which doesn't have an NVidia GPU, and it's part of the reason why I decided to give it a spin on desktop. At the end of the day, the issue got resolved, and now I can keep it, hopefully, in here too.
Yeah, like I said, SUSE isn’t the distro I use, but it is frequently at the top of the list when considering what distrit to use when I create a new server or anything like that. Even for my own personal uses, it was like number #2 on my list.
Thing is, as it happens with a lot of Linux, it all comes down to what you’re used to, what you’re comfortable with. And I am very used to and well trained in Debian-based distributions. Currently, I’m running Pop!_OS on a couple of servers.
Pop!_OS is quite an unorthodox choice for a server OS, ain't it? I'm genuinely interested in why you chose it specifically over, say, Debian or Ubuntu.
I ran Debian and derivatives (Ubuntu, Mint), Arch and derivatives (EndeavourOS, Manjaro), Fedora and OpenSUSE, although each one on a very "user" level; I'm no IT guy, I just value what Linux gives me and am forced to learn to use it well.
Each has their merits. Currently, I go with OpenSUSE because it gives reasonable stability while not going ancient. When set up right, you can rely on it to keep doing things the same way, without needing to intervene manually. It also features correctly set snapper by default, which ensures I, as a generally non-technical user, won't shoot myself in the foot.
Ideally, I would go with OpenSUSE Slowroll, as I love the concept, but it is still experimental and I don't want both my machines to rely on beta builds. Still, my laptop has it installed and it works like a charm. The idea of "nearly bleeding-edge, but behind the most adventurous users" is why I chose Manjaro as my first distribution back in the day. Sadly, it is poorly managed, and issues arising with AUR only make things worse. OpenSUSE Slowroll feels to me like Manjaro done right.
As per other distributions I tried: * Debian gets very ancient very quickly (and even if you rely on flatpaks, system packages are, like, OLD) * Ubuntu is poorly managed and filled with controversies, I don't feel like I own my computer * Mint is nearly a single distribution that doesn't officially ship with KDE (likely because most of its userbase would ditch Cinnamon immediately, huh) and has caused issues on my machines specifically * Arch/EndeavourOS is "move fast and break things", and things DO break unless you manually intervene on numerous occasions based on whatever forums tell you. Also, on all Arch-based systems, I face insane lags and RAM hogging when moving large files. I don't know why. * Manjaro, as I said, is well-intentioned, but poorly executed. It breaks from so many things, which makes it lose its novice appeal. Still, it's cozy and not scary to enter, so this is where I started, and then learning to fight the bugs taught me a lot about Linux * Fedora needs some work out of the box, but is generally stable and nice. However, the community is too fast to make breaking decisions (like when they ditched X11, which broke my gf's work because her tools don't work with Wayland, and she went with Fedora). Also, I'm not thrilled by its association with Red Hat, which turns increasingly...Canonical.
So, OpenSUSE it is. I never knew I would end up here, but here I am. Slowroll on my laptop for the last half a year or so convinced me to ditch EndeavourOS on my desktop and go OpenSUSE as well. Up to a rough start, but hoping it will go well after that.
I tried my 1060 with Debian, Ubuntu and Mint. Didn’t get it to run (stable) with the Nvidia drivers. And it will only get worse from here (especially with wayland) because the driver version for these cards is no longer maintained.
If found an article* about arch and Nvidia with a few things I haven’t tried. I’ll give it another try. But I have no hopes on getting it to run stable.

Palestinian factions began handing over weapons from Lebanon's largest refugee camp on Saturday, as part of a push by the government to disarm non-state groups.

Why i am hesitant: I don't want that people might be able to find out my name/adress that is registered with my domain. If some service does not need my personal data, i simply don't want them to be able to access them. It's as simple as that.
I read that a whois-check could reveal my data, but the situation seems more complicated. At least, i couldn't reveal my personal data with a whois-check.
Why i would like to use my own domain: I want to be more independent from my mail-provider.

Generally domain registrars have whois privacy so that when a whois is requested they find out who the registrar is but they don't find out who owns the domain itself.
So they would get that you host your domain with, say, pork bun, for example, but they would not be able to get any farther than that without contacting pork bun as like an agency or something.

WARNING: This varies by domain TLD. Some TLDs require public whois information because the country that owns the TLD has dictated it. Just pay attention when creating/obtaining new domains.
Domain registration information is public and accessible via whois. If your domain registrar has privacy services use them. They usually mean that instead of your name etc it will display the info of the privacy proxy.
Getting a domain at for example njal.la/ will keep you private, Njalla will buy the domain and they will own it for you, maybe not ideal but your contact info will not be searchable.
For .de you don't need any of that domain privacy stuff. .de domains don't reveal anything over whois except the company you registered the domain at (and DNS servers, but domains are useless without that). You have to do some special request to get more than that. Idk how hard it is to make such a request though

The reason I gave up self hosting email was because all my emails kept going to spam for everyone I emailed. I think there's a way to advertise your server to mark it as not spam for Gmail, but I don't remember exactly. Plus incoming email needs spam protection.

This is what I'm doing. I recently switched from the email service offered by my web host to Zoho Mail. I pay them $12 a year for a couple of gigabytes storage (which isn't a whole lot but enough for me and I'm cheap).
As someone else says elsewhere, as well as changing the MX records to the new server, you need to add SPF, DKIM and D-MARC records in your DNS to ensure mail you send is accepted by the receiver's mail server.

You need to set up DKIM, SPF and DANE, then most big email providers will accept your mail. Worst case, you may need to contact them to unblock your mail server's IP if that has been used by a spammer prior to you.
Plus incoming email needs spam protection.
Both SpamAssassin and Rspamd do a decent job of that.
Note: I'm using rspamd, and for some time at the beginning, it looked like it wasn't really doing anything. Turns out it needs a couple hundred training emails before it will start using the Bayes function. Just feed your Spam folder into the learn_spam command and any of your normal, not-spam folders into the learn_ham command.
Domain registration information can usually be found out somehow, although these days you have to jump through some additional hoops to get it, and those hoops are designed to discourage automated lookups. The privacy gains you get from hosting your own email server, though, are massive and IMHO more than worth it. If you are not hosting your own mail server, then the most you can expect from having your own domain is nicer looking email addresses. Depending on what your hosting provider supports you might also get unlimited aliases, maybe even regex aliases, which can be very helpful when handing out mail addresses to various companies and internet services.
If your main concern is that your email address should not be associated with your real identity, your best bet is to just use a VPN to connect to any large email hoster, like ProtonMail. (Obviously don't use Proton Mail if Proton is also your VPN.)
If you only ever use this mail domain to send messages to or receive messages from people who don't know your name and address, why not. Any old infoleak would otherwise indelibly associate that domain with that personal info.

There’s this problem we have with self hosting standard public services. Everything that could be used by a business seems like it’s either a full time job-sized hobby to maintain it or you have to pay a bunch of money to a service provider for them to handle it for you. Nobody takes the time to create an easy recipe for people to follow.
Luckily, though email was a difficult setup, it’s run worry free since. My emails are delivered because I did the security stuff: opendkim, dnssec, tls, all that. And I get zero spam (apart from exactly two cases where they abused a legitimate sender - whose abuse department responded and handled it) so it’s been lovely. I don’t seem to have time to maintain this so I’m lucky it’s been running well hands-free.
It’s a project but I would recommend it. Don’t let the big tech companies own all email, too. We have to protect that ability by exercising it.

Can someone tell me why an Android launcher should have Internet access..? Been on the hunt for a new launcher but am not installing software which I fail to see having to use the net to operate...just like keyboards...another one that has me scratch my head
Most include features such as a (subpar) news feed and weather.
These things are nice, but there's no need for a launcher to have them. They can, and should be done by other, dedicated apps. Someone mentioned widgets, but the launcher doesn't talk to the widget's app via Internet... it talks to it via IPC (inter-process communication). Ergo, no Internet permission needed.
Same with keyboards. They give you access to stuff like "ID this song", "get user-created themes" or "better swiping and handwriting recognition", all the while doing god-knows-what with your data.
It's basically a ruse. Give the users something thst needs the Internet permission, even if optional, so you can sensibly request it. Wheb you do, you get the unlimited, impossible-to-control permission (revokable only via ADB), allowing any and all Internet traffic.
As they say, "with power comes responsibility". This is a lot of power. And most apps in the Play Store don't give much confidence in their devs' data responsibility.
You can try looking at Settings to disable Internet access, but YMMV depending on the exact flavour of Android.

Only beacuse there are a couple of softawares that I need that don't run well in Bottles (Nitro Pro and an old app for anothere thing). It's a laptop with CPU i7 and a NVIDIA graphic card 1050 ti. Which distro would be best suited for the task? Is Mint ok? Thank you. Update: Setting the dual boot was getting messy, so I clean installed Mint. I'll try Windows VM later hoping it wont be too difficoult.
Take any distro you fancy, Mint is a good start. Create a bootable USB stick an try it out. This is does not modify anything on your computer, just loads linux and let's you test it. I usually play a youtube video. This shows that wifi, video and sound work out of the box.
This depends on the goal. Sure, installing Linux in a VM is easy and will always work. Also working within a VM is usually just fine. However you still have to keep Windows underneath with all it's problems like end of 10.

Why do journalists do this sort of thing where a guy will literally say that we should murder homeless people and then they try to dress down their language to the point of dishonesty? Euthanasia is when you help something die that is in horrible unyielding pain. Not when you kill something because you don’t know how to take care of it.
They view homeless people as less than human and thus use the same wording as they would about an animal. Convenience euthanasia is when you just kill an animal because you don't want it anymore, but it is still called euthanasia.
I guess what made me find this weaselly language especially sickening is I have long criticized the tendency of people to refer to killing inconvenient animals as “euthanasia” and I would usually ask people if they could imagine calling doing the same thing to people “euthanasia“. Well, I guess this person is happy to.

By having a physical SIM or an E-SIM, your ICCID and other data is transmitted directly to the tower, so using your family's hotspot was the better option in that case.

if you rely on someone else hotspot well you delegate the risk too. If they relay your traffic they can still shape or monitor your traffic. Obviously I would not expect your family member to do that... but if you are being monitored and there are data showing that you are not at home or work (wherever you usually are) and other data you are traveling together (e.g. plane tickets, border control with IDs checked, connection to services with different IPs) one could expect your surrounding to be potentially targeted. That is one extra hoop and it might protect from "shallow" surveillance but I would not be so sure.
SIM main problem in your situation IMHO is KYC, basically that you can't buy one without an ID and thus if you have expectation of anonymity regarding the provider of the SIM then it is not viable indeed.
eSIM AFAICT do not enforce KYC (no scan of ID to send) and typically offer to purchase a SIM outside of the country one is visiting, unlike physical SIMs. Sure they might share ICCID and more but unless that piece of data is linked with your actual name then it might not be a problem

Solar and wind aren't always available when someone wants to use them; they're intermittent. You have to fill in those gaps somehow. But energy storage is expensive and for pumped hydrostorage, the most-currently-economical form, somewhat geographically-limited. So the idea is that one uses natural gas instead of storing energy from a less-carbon-intensive source to fill in those gaps...but at least you're using less natural gas than one would if one weren't using renewable resources and just using natural gas all the time.

This was originally published by Socket and StepSecurity who noted 40 packages had been comrpomised, since then an additional 147 packages have been infected with malware including packages from CrowdStrike.
The scale, scope and impact of this attack is significant. The attackers are using the same playbook in large parts as the original attack, but have stepped up their game. They have turned it into a full worm, which does these things automatically:
Steal secrets and publish them to GitHub publicly
Run trufflehog and query Cloud metadata endpoints to gather secrets
Attempt to create a new GitHub action with a data exiltration mechanism through webhook[.]site

I use bsd containers for everything but home assistant on my home server and love them! The downside for most people at the moment is having to set them up manually. I can export the thin jail and move the archive across computers as backups and the fine tuned control is beautiful. FreeBSD offers a way to check for security vulnerabilities in installed packages (pkg audit -F) that I run as a cron job and email myself daily to check for needed updates.
Problem is most people want a single docker install and it’s all set up, not something that needs manual configuration. Bastille has templates that can do this for bsd jails but there’s not a lot of services with templates.
Edit: also frustrating is a lot of new apps for home servers only offer a docker install so installing from source becomes a huge pita and makes bsd jails harder to use (looking at you gramps-web specifically).

Most of them say they had valid visas or work authorization.
The U.S. has a visa waiver program where people can come into the U.S. without a visa, and have certain rights similar to visa holders. Many of the South Korean workers have taken the position that the visas they had that allowed them to work for 6 months, or the visa waivers they had entitled them to do temporary work for less than 90 days, and that they were within those time windows.
The lawsuits being filed also allege that immigration officials acknowledged that many of the workers did have legal rights to work, but that they were deported anyway.
So no, I don't think it's been shown that the workers did anything illegal. It really sounds like ICE fucked up by following a random tip a little too credulously.
This. All articles I've read that have interviews with the deported people concur that they had work visas or visa waivers. They weren't in the US illegally because businesses that send employees overseas aren't that stupid. TORONTO (AP) — Chrystia Freeland, whose abrupt resignation as finance minister last year forced Justin Trudeau’s exit as Canada’s prime minister, resigned Tuesday from the Cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In a letter announcing her departure as minister of transport and internal trade, Freeland said she will not run in the next election, but added she’s not leaving to spend more time with her family.
“With tremendous gratitude and a little sadness, I have decided to step down from Cabinet today and turn the page on this chapter in my life,” Freeland said.
Carney said Freeland will serve as Canada’s new special representative for the reconstruction of Ukraine — a newly created position outside Cabinet — in addition to her responsibilities as a member of Parliament.

LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) - Russia's oil pipeline monopoly Transneft (TRNF_p.MM) ,has warned producers they may have to cut output following Ukraine's drone attacks on critical export ports and refineries, three industry sources said on Tuesday.
In a statement on its website, Transneft described the news as "fake" and part of the West's "information war" against Russia.

Mastodon is finally introducing quote posts to their software, with the feature rolling out next week to the servers managed by Mastodon itself, and becoming available in Mastodon 4.5 soon after. Mastodon always had a significant worry that quote posts would lead to ‘dunking’ behaviour, where people would quote post someone else for clout. This is visible in how Mastodon has implemented the feature, and how their blog posts introduces the feature: it sees quote posts as a powerful tool that can easily be misused. That is why Mastodon has focused on giving users control over who can quote their posts; you can select per post if you want nobody, everybody, or only your followers to be able to quote your posts. You are also able to change this after you’ve made a post and somebody quotes your post in a manner you are do not want. In that case you can remove your original post from the other person’s quote post.
Giving people more control over how their data can be used is a great thing, and Mastodon adding quote posts in a manner that allows for people to determine how and if their posts can be quoted is a good implementation choice. Mastodon’s concern regarding the potential for harm with dunking does need some context however, researcher Hilda Bastian has a highly detailed overview of over 30 studies on quote posts on Twitter and their impact. Bastian notes: “There’s conflicting evidence on whether QTs increase or decrease incivility, and whatever effect there is, it doesn’t seem to be major.” Bluesky added a similar feature for quote posts in summer 2024, also allowing people to select when their posts can be quoted, and also described them as anti-toxicity features. Bridgy Fed, the software that connects ActivityPub with Bluesky’s AT Protocol, has gotten a new feature where you will get notified of interactions from non-bridged accounts. When you ‘bridge’ your account, it allows people on the other social network to interact with your posts. When someone replies to you on the other protocol, and they also have your account bridged, the replies show up on your posts, as if you were interacting with each other over the same protocol. But if the other person on the other network replies to a post, and they have not bridged their account, these replies are not visible, as they’ve not consented to getting their data send out on the other protocol. As such it becomes easy to miss interactions with your post that happen on the other protocol.
A New Social, the organisation behind Bridgy Fed, has launched an update where you will now get an hourly digest DM with links to the interactions on the other network. And if you do not want to receive the DMs, you can alter this in the Bridgy Fed settings page, or with a simple ‘mute’ as a reply.

A small piece of news that I think is worth highlighting: the iOS client IceCubes will not have support for the GoToSocial software, because the GoToSocial Code of Conduct prohibits contributions that are generated by AI. Every software is political in some form, and fediverse software makes the political aspect of software much more explicit. The fediverse talks about the plural politics of people often in terms of servers and moderation. By having many different servers, people can join the community that they align with. What’s interesting to me about this disagreement between GoToSocial and IceCubes is that this can extent to software itself as well. There is value in having multiple different clients that all offer roughly the same function, and having multiple different microblogging platforms that all do the same thing of posting. Software is political, and that people can express their politics via the software they choose is a good thing about the fediverse.
