Funny enough I just changed my daily driver to Linux as well. Long time Linux power user, stuck with a Windows main. Finally made the transition, couldn't be happier.
Ditto, friend. Which DE did you end up going with? I started with KDE but had bad luck with app crashes last night and odd desktop displays so I reinstalled fresh with GNOME (didn't need to worry about reinstalling vs switching DEs cause there wasn't much done with the OS by that point).
If you're still on the fence about switching to Linux, try downloading a Live Linux USB image and booting it from a USB stick. This lets you try out Linux without changing anything on your Windows drive. The Live version will also let you see if Linux detects all your computer's hardware before you install it for real.
I agree on trying the live boot first. I played around with the live boot for a week, and ended up installing mint as dual boot when I got frustrated about not being able to save files, save settings etc. I was barely using Windows at that point.
Agree, a USB stick live install is a good way to test - users should just bear in mind it is slower than a real install as USB drives are not as fast as internal hard drives. Once the OS is loaded fully it will feel reasonably snappy but still every piece of software you launch will take longer to load than a real install, and the bigger the software the longer it will take to load.
I also tended to recommend Linux Mint for beginners although I think I'm moving more towards recommending OpenSuSE Leap. The reason being it ships with KDE which is a slick interface with a Windows like set up by default (although very customisable - users can create MacOS or Gnome like interfaces with relative ease if they prefer) and gives a better idea of what modern Linux is capable of than Cinnamon in my opinion. Also KDE's Discover app makes it easy to install software, comparable to Mint's software store. Mint still has many more guides online but they're often around terminal use and APT based solutions, and I'm beginning to think that is actually a bad thing. Most stuff for mainstream users can be done via the GUI, and KDE offer's a great GUI. Plus Flatpak is a far better way of installing custom software than the APT recommendations I still see widely shared, so I think it's actually better to move people away from Mint. Personally I think OpenSuSE Leap is the better option (and possible Fedora KDE Plasma edition although I am less familiar with it).
I had already done that before pulling the trigger. I used Obsidian to get a listing of distros and then took notes as I tested them on my Lenovo Yoga 720 laptop. Obviously, not the same as my daily gaming rig, but it gave me a good enough approximation for how well I'd like some of the distros I tried. In the end it was Mint Cinnamon (currently installed on my Yoga) or openSUSE. I eventually had to reinstall openSUSE last night when KDE started giving me trouble. It's probably the last time I try KDE for a while. I just don't seem to have good luck with it all three times I've tried it across different distros.
Either way GNOME is working great this morning and I'm working on getting stuff customized!!
I played with it a bit. Can't remember my thoughts on it but when I was testing different distros for myself, my wife, and in-laws, I took notes for it.
OpenSuse is a left field choice. Nothing wrong with it - just not a typical first distro. Hope you have a great time with it! I recommend using it for a solid month then working on a windows pc for a day - you’ll be blown away by how asinine windows is once you’ve got used to Linux.

PS. If you plan on only using Wayland, you still need to have X11 installed. Don't ask me why, don't ask me how, I only know that without X11 my system would only login to shell
Great to see another person moving to Linux and OpenSuSE. My only caution if this is your first time with Linux is that a point release like OpenSuSE Leap is probably a better place to start than Tumbleweed. I'm on Tumbleweed and it's generally good but I have had a few things break over the last couple of years, often fixed at next update in fairness but it is frustrating even as an experienced user. I have also had to reinstall Tumbleweed on one occasion; it wasn't a big deal as I'd set up a separate Home and System partition. Tumbleweed is great but it is a rolling release and even though it's a well tested one rolling releases are always riskier in terms of things breaking.
I appreciate the cautionary tale. I already had to reinstall. I gave KDE another shot thinking previous issues were from the old Lenovo Yoga or distro I used it with. Unfortunately, that wasn't so. Even though I intentionally took my time customizing the layout, somehow I had some KDE thing crash twice, the main display had shifted to only showing have the page, like it was stuck under the monitor, and after a reboot to fix that problem it had made it so the context menu on the main desktop was not showing all the options.
While I'm not a fan of GNOME, per say, as I am not a fan of Apple style docks for a taskbar, I never had issues with it, so I am using that instead of KDE.

I was aware of the procedural lock in via play integrity services and also the lockdown on side loading so that didn't get past me, but I wasn't aware google also wants to alienate developers now by requiring ID. It seems to me google want to now fully commercialize the platform, transforming it into the ad infested network that web2+3.0 already became. I think their plan, by alienating non commercial devs, is that all apps will run on their ad models and non without them will be left.
Google is moving to make Android less open source. I'm not sure more devs following suit is going be good for them or their users. The G doesn't give an F.
What we need is an OS fork that gets maintained. If not that, some other workaround that fools the Google servers. Because you can bet money that nobody made from flesh and blood is going to look at this inside Google.

Well for this case in particular yes, the dev will continue to develop the app on f-droid, the platform as a whole takes a hit through this though, so who knows how long they will continue out of goodwill.
Hopefully this leads to a lot more development of and for Ubuntu Touch. Biggest issues it faces are lack of compatibility and lack of apps. I think the core is solid though. I used it for a week when switching from iOS (so no Android background) and enjoyed it, but a few too many minor issues built up and I ended up going to Calyx.

I've heard that it will still be possible to install unverified apps via ADB, so theoretically it wouldn't be hard to make an app installer that uses Shizuku (tool that allows you to ADB into your own device) and have a website that automatically installs that using WebUSB or something
app manager can already work as an app installer, but it needs wireless debugging enabled which can be a security risk. and you have to install app manager too somehow.

They already have the framework for this in place, "unrecognised" apps get blocked by Play services already asking you if Google can scan the app before you start it, the app will not start at all unless you click yes or no.

This is completely wrong. I asked this exact question to google in their poll and I got an answer from them saying it would always work with adb. It's for devs so you can run those apps of course. This means F-Droid can implement a Shizuku backend to install apps and the UX will be even better since it will bypass popups. However, initial setup will be far more complicated
You can but that's REALLY not a solution. How many times/day to plan on plugging in your phone and running a couple dozen commands to update your apps?
It's also absurdly lacking in features compared to Android/iOS (never mind app support) and the dev team is so small they can barely maintain existing device support. VoLTE is still unsupported in the majority of devices. The OS doesn't even have basic security features like drive encryption
I like UBPorts a lot but I think the alternative/FOSS smartphone market is too fragmented between it and SailfishOS/PostMarketOS that none of them will emerge with enough adoption to be real competitors to the iOS/Android duopoly. Didn't mean to be overly negative. Just my two cents

Honestly considering the same. Sideloading is the only reason to stick with Android and that's now going away. Apple devices have more power, better battery life, better displays, etc etc etc. Especially considering the "base" 17 is now actually a really good value while Pixel prices have skyrocketed in recent years to iPhone levels (presumably for AI shit I don't even want).
I switched to iPhone in 2016. I had no idea Pixel was coming, and my choices all sucked. The more I looked at the iPhone 6s, the more I realized it was the right phone at that time.
I’m now on my fourth iPhone and I’m kind of done with them. “Apple Intelligence” and the keyboard gets so many things wrong. On a 16 Pro Max. And yet my Galaxy S10 which is 5 years older gets almost nothing wrong.
iPhones have great screens and the newest Snapdragon barely catches up to the new iPhone chip. But I think it does more. The Pixel chip is much further behind (comparable to an iPhone 11, I hear) but even that phone seems smarter.
I feel like iPhones are really nice basic/feature phones. They work well with my Macs, but Macs don’t stop working if your phone runs Android. They just don’t play well together.
Apple is a lot better on privacy. They never pretended to be or care about open source though. iOS is based on macOS which is certified UNIX; Android is Linux more or less but neither is open. I think it's a moot point at best and a bullshit non-point most days. Open source I mean. As far as privacy, I think Apple is better on a good day but maybe misleading, but Google never really pretended to care. The deal was always, premium stuff for your personal data. We just didn’t care as much back then.
Honestly there are no great options. If I had to buy a phone right now, I’d probably get a Galaxy S25. I just hate what’s going on with Nova Launcher. But I love using my S10, it’s just a dated screen at this point.
Its not about security for google, its about to have more control over their platform. They saw apple got away with their policies about sideloading here in Europe (which is still a pain in the ass) so they thought why not have it in android.

Also I suppose that you'll need to adb every update. So apps that would want to go this way should self check updates instead of relying on an external store.
Android Debug Bridge. It is a way to control the device via command line, mainly from an external computer. Among other things allows for app installation. It's one of the main ways to test and debug apps while being developed.
But that begs the same question. If you never update your existing phone with google's malware, you should be ok.
Obviously if you buy a new phone that's already infected you're screwed unless you can flash a new ROM on there.
My point is. People's current phones do not have this malware on it yet. If you disable updates and/or degoogle, your device should continue to work as is. Perhaps without being able to use Google Play Store, but honestly that's not huge loss for anyone that cares about this stuff in the first place.

I don't believe the certified android means hardware, I believe it's only about if you have an official android build running, since if your hardware can run a custom ROM, you can get around this issue.
I think it has to do with the google certification you have to go through to sell hardware shipping with android. All devices need to be certified by google or they are not allowed to run gapps or connect to the playstore. This is what huawei lost after trump banned them, so they had to make their own shit as a replacement
From what I've seen elsewhere, yes. adb sideloading will still be possible, but that adds a level of inconvenience many people will not enjoy, especially since FDroid and similar have been so easy.

I'm not deep into Android development, but I doubt it's possible to just port an app without basically a complete rewrite. Android has an own layer on top of the JVM, called Zygote, and there's presumably lots of system libraries which the Android apps implicitly depend on, for handling graphics and whatnot, which make tons of assumptions about running on an Android device.

This news makes me actually sad. I have had high hopes in the last years in the FOSS world, having myself and three other persons move to use Linux as daily driver on Desktop/Laptop.
My phone has FOSS apps only except for banking, health, transport tickets and 2/3 work rekated stuff. My messaging, files and pictures are handled by FOSS apps installed from third parties (F-Droid, Obtainium) on selfhosted servers... I was finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

Agreed. Google just didn't consent to you getting an app without ads. My hope is maybe we can circumvent it for a while with PWA or browser website bookmarks. Maybe long enough for alternatives to arrive or consumer protection to kick in. I refuse to give up hope even though I might need to abandon android. For now I guess I will just not buy another phone since androids time seems limited. Really hard to find something to recommend to family and friends that just works. I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Leninism, is in fact, Marxism-Leninism, or as I've recently taken to calling it, Marxism plus Leninism. Leninism is not an ideology unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Marxist ideology made useful by the 『Manifesto』 , 『Capital』 and vital ideology components comprising a full ideology.

Section I: Getting Started
What the heck is Communism, anyways? For that matter, what is fascism?
Breaks down fascism and its mortal enemy, Communism, as well as their antagonistic relationship. Understanding what fascism is, where and when it rises, why it does so, and how to banish it forever is critical. Parenti also helps debunk common anti-Communist myths, from both the "left" and the right, in a quick-witted writing style. This is also an excellent time to watch the famous speech.
Section II: Historical and Dialectical Materialism
By far my favorite primer on Marxist philosophy. By understanding Dialectical and Historical Materialism first, you make it easier to understand the rest of Marxism-Leninism. Don't be intimidated!

That's right, it's time for the Law of Value and a deep-dive into Imperialism. If we are to defeat Capitalism, we must learn it's mechanisms, tendencies, contradictions, and laws.
Best taken as a pair, these essays simplify the most important parts of the Law of Value. Marx is targetting those not trained in economics here, but you might want to keep a pen and some paper to follow along if you are a visual person.
Absolutely crucial and the most important work for understanding the modern era and its primary contradictions. Marxist-Leninists understand that Imperialism is the greatest contradiction in the modern era, which cascades downward into all manner of related contradictions. Knowing what dying Capitalism looks like, and how it behaves, means we can kill it.
Section IV: Revolutionary and Scientific Socialism
Can we defeat Capitalism at the ballot box? What about just defeating fascism? What about the role of the state?
If Marxists believed reforming Capitalist society was possible, we would be the first in line for it. Sadly, it isn't possible, which Luxemburg proves in this monumental writing.
Excellent refutation of revisionists and Social Democrats who think the State can be reformed, without needing to be replaced with one that is run by the workers, in their own interests.
Section V: Intersectionality and Solidarity
The revolution will not be fought by atomized individuals, but by an intersectional, international working class movement. Intersectionality is critical, because it allows different marginalized groups to work together in collective interest, unifying into a broad movement.
Critical reading on understanding misogyny, transphobia, enbyphobia, pluralphobia, and homophobia, as well as how to move beyond the base subject of "gender." Uses the foundations built up in the previous works to analyze gender theory from a Historical Materialist perspective.

That's kind of hilarious. At first we had VMs to run entirely separate operating systems. Then we had Containers to separate everything except the kernel. And now we might get separation for just the kernel.
Well, there's a separate technology stack for virtualization. So, it would be similar in effect, but the way you get there is different, and it's possible that it performs better or worse for certain scenarios.

I'm trying to set up some iptables rules in both Debian and Ubuntu, but I'm not sure how to make them persistent. As far as I understand the iptables package in the debian and Ubuntu repos is actually iptables-nft meaning I'm actually creating nftables rules, so I'm supposed to use iptables-nft-save to save them instead of using the normal method for iptables or nftables? But that command just seems to produce an output that doesn't match the syntax for iptables or nftables and the man page is not very helpful.
I'm also confused why Ubuntu does seem to have the /etc/iptables/rules.v4 and v6 files but Debian doesn't? Both seem to have /etc/nftables.conf as well but I'm not sure if that's even used (the Ubuntu machine has a bunch of iptables rules already defined which don't show up there but do show up in nft list ruleset)

The Donbass region is largely ethnically Russian, and has been systematically oppressed by Kiev, including erasure of the Russian language, and outright massacres following the secession of Donetsk and Luhansk post-Euromaidan.
Additionally, the USSR never colonized Ukraine, neither did the Russian Federation. The Banderites that took over Ukraine in 2014 are far-right nationalists, and as such are useful for NATO.
First off, the donbas is not majority russian. While it has the largest group of Russians in the country it is still majority Ukrainian.
Second, the ICJ and international association of genocide scholars investigated Russia's claim of massacre and genocide and found them to be entirely baseless and fabricated to justify invasion.
Third, if this was about liberating the donbas, then Russia wouldn't have gone all the way to Kyiv at the beginning of the invasion. Even still Russia occupies far more than the donbas.

Third, the war is not about "liberating the Donbass region." It's about Russia securing the biggest land bridge into their territory, the Donbass region, and ensuring NATO neutrality. Demillitarizing Ukraine is a secondary goal for that second goal. Getting more territory than the Donbass region and destroying as much millitary equipment as possible ensures that Russia's stated goals are met, and improves their bargaining position.
This isn't a war of good vs evil, the world doesn't work in such Marvel terms. Russia has consistent and clear goals, it isn't some evil group of evildoers doing evil.

This is one of the more complex issues hotly debated among communists these days, but 2 years into the SMO the overall stance among Marxist-Leninist and ML-adjacent orgs is pro-SMO. A few of the following reasons can help paint a better picture:
NATO provoked the war as a means to weaken Russia, and open up its capital markets for foreign plunder, similar to the late 90s. What NATO wants is to use Ukraine as an expendable battering ram so that Russia is economically backed into a corner, and must allow western imperialists into their country.
Russia is currently a major trading partner with socialist countries like Cuba, the PRC, and DPRK. It is in the interests of socialists worldwide that Russia not fall to become a western puppet, because trade has dramatically improved conditions in Cuba, the DPRK, and has allowed China to become more independent from the west.
Communism is more popular than ever in Russia. 3 decades on from the dissolution of the USSR, the KPRF is seeing a dramatic upswing in support, as is general soviet nostalgia. Even right-wing nationalists like Putin make references to Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin, etc to try to take advantage of rising support for transitioning to socialism. The nationalist bourgeoisie in charge of Russia are walking a thin line right now, a line they could be forced off of in the future. This is heightening because of trade and increased ties with socialist countries and student exchanges, such as between Cuba, the DPRK, and PRC.
Russia is a right-wing dictatorship of capital, but it isn't imperialist in the Marxist sense. It is forced into alignment with the global south against the global north, and as a consequence it is one of the most likely countries on the planet to have a socialist revolution in the next decade. The SMO protects them against NATO expansion, and the west has sabotaged peace talks in order to keep the war going.

That's right, it's time for the Law of Value and a deep-dive into Imperialism. If we are to defeat Capitalism, we must learn it's mechanisms, tendencies, contradictions, and laws.
Best taken as a pair, these essays simplify the most important parts of the Law of Value. Marx is targetting those not trained in economics here, but you might want to keep a pen and some paper to follow along if you are a visual person.

Can we defeat Capitalism at the ballot box? What about just defeating fascism? What about the role of the state?

As for your individual circumstance, I totally understand that living in a state where the cultural context around political issues can color your perspective. I'm a Statesian, living in the US Empire, so that impacts what internal misconceptions I've had to overcome as well. Hegemony is one of the more interesting topics in communist thought, perhaps most developed by Gramsci.
My advice is to try to see where the information you are getting is coming from. Is it the working class, the politicians, capitalists, etc? Working class organizations, be they communist parties or even labor unions, will generally have a much better understanding of current events without being clouded by imperialist propaganda (though some unions are more compromised than others).

Critism of capitalism and defense of communism is authoritarian to liberals though. After all, to them private property ownership is a human right and not allowing it is an authoritarian impingement on their freedom.
Depends on how you critique the CPC, for what reasons. If they are from a position entrenched in liberal viewpoints and US state department lines on China, then it's fair to say they are liberal. However, there are legitimate ways to critique China from the left. They are slow to adopt widespread LGBTQIA+ rights, for example, and while this is improving, I'd personally like it to be going much faster. Saying the CPC is doing organ harvesting is not legitimate critique.

The 1930s famine wasn't forced, though. It was a combination of adverse weather conditions leading to lower crop yields, wealthy farmers called kulaks killing their livestock and burning their crops to "resist collectivization," and some degree of mismanagement. It's important to recognize that pre-1930s, Eastern Europe had regular famines as well, and that following collectivization the 1930s famine was the last famine outside of World War II (when the Nazis took Ukraine, the USSR's breadbasket).

This is wrong, plainly. Fascism is a thoroughly capitalist ideology, no existing socialist state can be classified as fascist. The idea that socialism was simply sabotaged by "elites" ignores the material reality that socialism brought tremendous democratization, decreased disparity, and massive improvements in life metrics for the working class wherever it has been implemented. All states are "authoritarian," the difference is which class is the ruling class. In capitalism, that's the capitalist class, but in socialism, it's the working class. The state is simply the instrument by which the ruling class in any given society resolves class conflicts in favor of the ruling class. That's why in socialist countries, metrics for the working class have skyrocketed, but they largely stagnate or decay in capitalism.
No modern or past socialist country has had the working class as there ruling class, there has always been an elite class, this is simply not true Cuba and North Korea are instant examples that come to mind, and there are countless more

Secondly, the degree to which a state exerts its authority depends on the circumstances it's in. Nazi Germany and modern Germany both have the same capacity for weilding authority, but the Nazis came to power during economic crisis, and killed the workers that were organizing in order to prevent socialism from spreading. Modern Germany isn't any less authoritarian, it just doesn't need to exert the same degree of authority. It will eventually, most likely.
Don't forget the bison skull mountain in the US. They exterminated the bison population for no other reason than to starve the Indigenous peoples into submission.

in reply to regedit • • •If you're still on the fence about switching to Linux, try downloading a Live Linux USB image and booting it from a USB stick. This lets you try out Linux without changing anything on your Windows drive. The Live version will also let you see if Linux detects all your computer's hardware before you install it for real.
I recommend Linux Mint for beginners.

in reply to NutWrench • • •Agree, a USB stick live install is a good way to test - users should just bear in mind it is slower than a real install as USB drives are not as fast as internal hard drives. Once the OS is loaded fully it will feel reasonably snappy but still every piece of software you launch will take longer to load than a real install, and the bigger the software the longer it will take to load.
I also tended to recommend Linux Mint for beginners although I think I'm moving more towards recommending OpenSuSE Leap. The reason being it ships with KDE which is a slick interface with a Windows like set up by default (although very customisable - users can create MacOS or Gnome like interfaces with relative ease if they prefer) and gives a better idea of what modern Linux is capable of than Cinnamon in my opinion. Also KDE's Discover app makes it easy to install software, comparable to Mint's software store. Mint still has many more guides online but they're often around terminal use and APT based solutions, and I'm beginning to think that is actually a bad thing. Most stuff for mainstream users can be done via the GUI, and KDE offer's a great GUI. Plus Flatpak is a far better way of installing custom software than the APT recommendations I still see widely shared, so I think it's actually better to move people away from Mint. Personally I think OpenSuSE Leap is the better option (and possible Fedora KDE Plasma edition although I am less familiar with it).

in reply to NutWrench • • •I had already done that before pulling the trigger. I used Obsidian to get a listing of distros and then took notes as I tested them on my Lenovo Yoga 720 laptop. Obviously, not the same as my daily gaming rig, but it gave me a good enough approximation for how well I'd like some of the distros I tried. In the end it was Mint Cinnamon (currently installed on my Yoga) or openSUSE. I eventually had to reinstall openSUSE last night when KDE started giving me trouble. It's probably the last time I try KDE for a while. I just don't seem to have good luck with it all three times I've tried it across different distros.
Either way GNOME is working great this morning and I'm working on getting stuff customized!!

I gave KDE another shot thinking previous issues were from the old Lenovo Yoga or distro I used it with. Unfortunately, that wasn't so. Even though I intentionally took my time customizing the layout, somehow I had some KDE thing crash twice, the main display had shifted to only showing have the page, like it was stuck under the monitor, and after a reboot to fix that problem it had made it so the context menu on the main desktop was not showing all the options.
While I'm not a fan of GNOME, per say, as I am not a fan of Apple style docks for a taskbar, I never had issues with it, so I am using that instead of KDE.
