Scores of illegal Israeli settlers stormed the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday and held prayers for US right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, who was killed earlier this month.
The Hebrew-language site Srugim reported that the ritual was led by far-right Rabbi and former Knesset member Yehuda Glick, a prominent advocate of expanding Jewish access to the site.
On Saturday, Israeli forces said they would send reinforcements to the occupied West Bank amid heightened alert ahead of the holidays.
According to Jerusalem’s Islamic Endowments Directorate, violations at Al-Aqsa Mosque have escalated sharply since far-right politician Itamar Ben-Gvir became Israel’s national security minister in late 2022.
Al-Aqsa Mosque is the world’s third-holiest site for Muslims. Jews call the area Temple Mount, claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.
Israel occupied East Jerusalem, where Al-Aqsa Mosque is located, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognised by the international community.
Palestinians see the settler incursions into Al-Aqsa Mosque as part of efforts to Judaise occupied East Jerusalem and erase its Arab and Islamic identity. They insist occupied East Jerusalem is the capital of a future Palestinian state, in line with international resolutions rejecting Israel’s 1967 occupation and its 1980 annexation of the city.

Baffled at PC freezing on Linux, but not on Windows for the same workload

This issue is a long time coming. I got a mini pc (Asrock Deskmini h110, i5-6400, 16gb) that I have used for a long time with Kubuntu/Kde Neon, and most of its life, it worked great. Some years ago, it started freezing, especially at Graphic intensive workload, so I thought some hardware issue and converted it into a NAS and it worked absolutely fine as well for a couple of years there too. Recently my wife needed a Windows PC to do some work, and since I had upgraded my NAS, I repurposed the same PC and installed Windows on it, and it worked absolutely fine for her too. Then I decided to check some Graphics intensive workload, like 3d benchmarking stuff, and it didn't freeze once. I was delighted, and thought maybe I didn't investigated the issue the first time, and the PC was fine all along. So I reinstalled Debian 13, and lo behold, the issue came back. I found out while I was using IKEA's 3d kitchen planner. So I replaced distros, and it froze on Ubuntu and CachyOS as well. I tried switching between Wayland and X11, switched browsers, but PC freezes seconds logging into IKEA's kitchen planner (as soon as 3d graphics are loaded). I reinstalled windows, and my wife has been designing a kitchen in IKEA's 3d kitchen planner for over an hour now, and it hasn't frozen once. What's going on? How do I even investigate this?

I have reinstalled Linux and had sudo dmesg -w running, but no logs are captured before it's frozen. I have reproduced the issue multiple times now on Linux, and not once it froze on Windows. I have also done memtests, and tried multiple disks both nvme and sata. Also have tried multiple browsers with apt and flatpaks. I really need Lemmy's collective intelligence to help me here.

Update: Well system stopped hanging with 'nomodeset' as boot parameter, confirming that it's Intel 915 driver. I tried variety of Intel related kernel parameters like psr, dc, guc, even messed with Intel cstate, but it hanged every time Intel 915 driver is even loaded. So ???

Are you sure you are not hitting swap too hard? Windows by default makes a bonkers massive page file, while most distributions try to limit wasting so much for swap.

If so, try installing SwapSpace

It's not about the amount of swap space, it's a problem that happens when swapping happens for big chunks of data at a time.

Windows aggressively swaps out things way before it's necessary, you can try increasing the system's "swappiness"; ~~I'm writing this from my phone, but when I get to my PC I'll write out how to do it (unless somebody else does it before I do).~~

You can set it by writing vm.swappiness=60 in a file like /etc/sysctl.d/50-swappiness.conf.
The value 60 is arbitrary, if you increase it the system will try to swap out things more aggressively; the name of the file is also partially arbitrary, but AFAIK, it has to begin with two digits — the system will read all the files inside /etc/sysctl.d in order, and the settings in higher-numbered files will be applied over lower ones.

Officially, this is the explaination of the vm.swappiness parameter.
You can read and write the value with your shell:

This is unrelated but I wonder if I could get better Windows VM performance by disabling swap for the VM. I use an old laptop with slow drive. I wonder if aggressive swapping could be the reason why my Windows machine feels frozen all the time.

Windows 10 and 11 really dislike HDDs, that's probably why you can't admit to using HDDs online without getting stones thrown at you (I've been there before).

I've disabled paging files (= swap) for one of my Windows VMs, unfortunately - to my surprise - that only had a small performance boost, and I still need to let the VM chug for a few mintes before it even lets me open File Explorer.

... but it does improve performance, definitely consider doing it if you don't need swap/paging/whatever they call it now.

Could still be a hardware issue that's only triggered by certain code paths.

Update everything, BIOS, firmware, microcode, drivers. If it still freezes, the next step will be swapping out hardware components.

Already did all this. Got latest firmware, swapped ram modules and disks, even USB peripherals, nothing changed. Works fine in windows, freezes in Linux.

Hi, I tried updating the kernel and currently at 6.16, but system still hangs. It only works when nomodeset is added to disable Intel 915 driver completely.

A quick google search shows that many people have issues with the Intel Integrated Graphics on this particular PC (including on Windows) and this seems to be the solution:

The main solution is Windows based but someone does offer a Linux route to the same solution, although a linked file that sounds like setting it up may be easier is missing. Essentially it looks like the chipset needs tweaking to throttle the GPU slightly to prevent the flaw triggering.

Well you sent me down a rabbit hole and for a while I thought it was definitely the issue. I found a script that does what the suggested solution in the link says, and I adjusted iccmax values for GPU, but it doesn't matter what parameters I adjusted, it kept freezing. I tried BIOS firmware downgrade and updates, changed undervolt parameters and so many other stuff, but didn't help. In fact it kept freezing without going into graphic intensive work, so I tried reinstalling different distro with different DE, yet all of them froze so much much that I gave up. Reinstalled Windows and it hasn't freeze once. It's hard to admit as a Linux evangelist but windows works for some bloody reason where Linux simply fails.

Why would that be hard to admit? This is a bug in a specific hardware that has a crappy driver for Linux, Intel doesn't care about Linux, if Linux was 90% of the market instead of 2% I assure you this bug wouldn't exist.

Because I have been asking my wife to switch to Linux for sometime and one time where she finally agrees, this is what happens. Your reasons are valid but even if I could explain all that to her, she already got one of the worst impressions about Linux with this fiasco. I don't know how to explain this but this small little thing, this bug, not only has kinda killed my credibility as a tech person in my house, it has also killed the hope of moving away from big corporations towards self hosted services.

Linux is kind of dogshit at memory management unfortunately, due to a thing called overcommit it can essentially commit more memory than there actually exists on the system, cue potential for hard locks, stutters and freezing, there are some mitigations

Now the common recommendation is brute forcing the issue by making a swap partition or file, this is generally a bad idea on a modern system, due to the speed of ssds and even some fast spinning hard drives its possible for the kernel to get confused and think there's enough memory spare where it becomes less snappy about clearing memory, often ironically making the problem worse, generally only use a swap partition if you need something else like hibernation

What should instead be done these days is setting up zram which essentially does compression of your memory in ram so that it stays clear for as long as possible, zswap does something similar but will also fallback to a swap partition soon after, the two are very similar so just setup zram on installs that dont have or need a swap partition, and setup zswap on ones that need or already have a swap partition(as they're annoying to remove in an existing install)

But we're not done yet because while this will buy you a lot of time there is still another massive issue at play, the linux kernel's oom killer doesn't generally care how full your memory is unless it starts biting into the kernel's needs, this means it can take ages before it does anything even if everything is so overloaded where your display server has been hard frozen for 20 minutes, and since it has no real priority outside of the kernel it may force shut off vital processes first rather than secondary ones

To fix this you want a userspace oom killer that keeps in mind the entire OS and prioritises what needs to go first, many exist but if you want something that just works then EarlyOOM is great

With these mitigations in place your OS should become much less prone to freezing and stutters, if you really want a nuclear option there's also cgroups

I did both. Local dmesg and from a ssh session as well, both without any entry on freezing. Journalctl is also with nothing out of the ordinary

SSH in from another machine, and sudo dmesg -w. If the graphics die, it can't display new logs on the screen. If the rest of the system is fine, an open SSH session should give you more info (and allow you to troubleshoot further).

You can also check if the kernel is still functional by using a keyboard with a caps-lock LED. If the LED starts flashing after the "freeze", it's actually a kernel panic. You'll have to figure out a way to obtain the kernel panic information (like using tty1).

After the "freeze", try pressing the caps-lock key. If the LED turns on when pressing caps-lock, the Linux kernel is still functional. If the caps-lock key/LED does not work, the entire computer is frozen, and you are most likely looking at a hardware fault.

From there, you basically need to make educated guesses of what to attempt in order to narrow down the issue and obtain more information. For example, try something like glxgears or vkgears to see if it happens with only one of those, or both (or neither).

Well I did dmesg locally and via ssh, and neither showed any message before freezing. Similarly I did journalctl at next boot and no errors there either.

Capslock doesn't work, neither can I ping the host. The system is completely frozen and can only be reset with physical power button.

Surprisingly glxgears worked fine and didn't led to any freeze.

Not sure this is the answer, but going to throw my two cents. If you try and it works let us know.

When I got back into linux a couple years ago I hopped through all of the distros you mentioned. The last one being KDE Neon. When I first found it I absolutely loved it. Decided that was going to be my main distro and started migrating all my systems which is a couple laptops, gaming desktop, and mini PC.

Over time I found that I was having minor, but consistent hardware issues. Similar to yours, freezing, and other gpu issues. It was most apparent on systems that had newer hardware. Looking at the specs for your mini PC it seems a bit older than what I have so again, not sure this applies to you, but I found my saving grace in Fedora. My issue specifically was the older kernel Neon uses not interacting well with my newer hardware and in some cases not having access to some hardware features. Fedora had a KDE spin otherwise I wouldn't have done it. It has been my daily driver on all systems since.

TL;DR: Try Feodra KDE Spin or any distro that ships with a more up to date kernel

Old laptop suddenly won't recognize Linux boot drive

I'm in a really weird situation, yesterday I installed Linux (Fedora Kinoite) on my mothers laptop (An old Asus F550C) and it worked perfectly fine. Great! Or so I thought.

We needed a few files from Windows 10, so I put that drive in, put the files on a USB stick, put the Linux drive back in and... Nothing? It recognizes the drive, but not the Linux boot option.
I put the drive in my pc and it works fine, the boot drive is also still detected in the laptop just fine.

What the hell could it be??

The laptop is fine (Windows drive works perfectly)
The drive is recognized in bios (But not the boot option)
The drive works fine in my desktop and can boot to Fedora
The laptop can boot to the USB drive I used to create the install
Yesterday it worked just fine
I went through the bios, but can't find any settings related to this (Secure boot did not fix it)

Update: the issue is solved! Windows somehow wiped the efiboot entry.

I mounted the drive from a live usb and ran

sudo efibootmgr --create --disk /dev/sda --part 1 --label "Fedora" --loader '\EFI\fedora\shimx64.efi'

After rebooting, the system works again!

I've dealt with something similar to this on a lenovo ideapad.

The BIOS picks up UEFI info from windows and messes up the boot config and order. I solved it by using grub2 rescue, booting to the correct Linux entry and using grub to update UEFI and write the config correctly again.

Super pain in the a**.

This ended up being the issue! Booted up a live USB, mounted the disk and ran

sudo efibootmgr --create --disk /dev/sda --part 1 --label "Fedora" --loader '\EFI\fedora\shimx64.efi'

After rebooting it worked again!

Now to never plug a windows drive into that PC again...

Masto question: at what point does a new server begin displaying content from another server (and vice/versa)?

**Update: I found a page in fedi.tips that has a lot of detail on this:

Federation is a beautiful thing. However, I've known that smaller, newer servers' content isn't always seen on others and vice-versa. And that over time that improves and increases.

So, for example, NewAndQuirky.social starts up. If an account on day 2 of that server does a search on quirky-topic, from which servers would content be seen for that?

Would any contact (a follow, a boost of a post, etc.) between New&Q and another server open up all data from the other? Or just posts related to the boosted posts, or posts from followed accounts?

And just new, or new and old? Any other information on the logic/algorithms of server interaction data would be appreciated.

I have an old laptop running it since a year ago. It's getting there. If you use it long enough, you will still regularly stumble on little things that are nicer to use on gnome or kde but it's getting there. I plan on switching my primary desktop to it for the 26.04 release

“We couldn’t understand why,” a contractor who had been tracking the discussions told me. “It seemed like a no-brainer, but they just weren’t into it.”

The comments surprised some State officials, but they soon learned that it wasn’t just Denmark having its access cut off. Current and former administration officials told me the Pentagon has identified some weapons as being in short supply, and is moving to block new requests for those systems coming in from Europe. It wasn’t immediately clear to those I spoke with how long the hold will last, how many weapons are on the list, or if it could expand to include even more weapons. Few exemptions will be granted.

Pre-Flight Check

This may seem like edging towards paranoia, however, how many of you do a pre-flight check of your network before you use your devices?

Every morning when I start up my computer, I do a pre-flight check against sites like DNSLeakCheck, and several others. It's a back check to make sure my network is operating in as private, secured, and an anonymous manner as possible, and perhaps give me a little more peace of mind.

To facilitate this in an expedient manner, I wrote a simple bat script to do just that.

Myself I don't do any pre-flight checks. My VPN has a killswitch and I get a notification whenever it breaks on my server so I know to check it

Sure, my VPN has a kill switch too. While I may use the same locale on the VPN, I do sometimes get different IPs. New IPs demand to be checked out. Point being, here is a less than one minute check to see that everything is as it should be. Never trust, always verify or even trust but verify. How can one verify if one does not check?

Sure, I could pull up the cli and do a nslookup, and slog through a couple of other commands, or I can click an icon on my desktop and see results in a matter of seconds.

Well, I'm working on a python script that could be called with a cron. I'm also contemplating automating it with N8N since I selfhost it. However, tho I can code in basic terms in several languages, I am not the most competent coder, so it takes me a while. LOL

Thirty one journalists and media staff were killed by Israeli strikes on newspaper offices in Yemen last week in what the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said on Friday was the deadliest attack on journalists in the last 16 years.
Israel struck a newspaper complex in Sana’a, Yemen’s capital, which housed three Houthi-connected media outlets on 10 September. At the time, members of the Yemeni army’s press arm were finishing the weekly print edition, according to the publication’s editor-in-chief, which increased the number of journalists present during the strike.
At least 35 people were killed in the attack, including one child who accompanied a journalist to the office, and 131 were wounded, according to the Houthi ministry of health. All of the journalists worked for either the Houthi-affiliated 26 September newspaper or Yemen newspaper.
The attack was the second-deadliest against journalists that the CPJ had ever recorded, after the Maguindanao massacre in the Philippines in 2009.

I think you’re spot on, Marx specifically has a lot of connotations the general, uninformed public is terrified of.

I remember when I had to read it for a class the first time and the vibes in the room was exactly like you’re opening some of book of sin. I was scared of a book, as a college student at the time. Then we actually started reading it, and it was like “wow this guy gets the issues of the system”.

While I personally have agreements and some disagreements with Marx, I think he helped give me a lot of solid ideas that the system itself could be reformed and reforged.

I think it’s a shame that his ideas had carried a public taint to them for so long, due to several authoritarians co-opting his message. I have no clue why it’s not required high school reading at this point, since I feel it’d go a long ways towards helping more people get curious about improving and changing the system for the better.

While we might point to some Socialist experiments that succumbed to needless authoritarianism (for example, Romania), This is a view that looks at 20th century socialism, and collapses the experiences of these places. The aforementioned example of Romania, with its horrific treatment of women, vs the comparatively very modern East Germany with its state-owned gay bars are in many respects, world apart. Collapsing these places with a blanket term of "authoritarian" and waving it away as all just an unfortunate shame, is unhelpful at best, and actively anti-intellectual at worst.

THE US ENDORSEMENT

Recently declassified National Security documents show that the CIA and the US State Department remained primary sponsors of the military junta, which was led by General Jorge Videla. On February 16, 1976, six weeks before the coup, Robert Hill, the US ambassador to Argentina, reported to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that the plans for the coup were underway and that a public relations campaign had been mounted that would cast the new military regime in a positive light. Hill added that even though “some executions would probably be necessary,” the leaders of the junta remained determined “to minimize any resulting problems with the US”40On March 25, 1979, two days after the coup, William Rogers, assistant secretary for Latin America, advised Kissinger that the military takeover of Argentina would result in “a fair amount of repression, probably a good deal of blood.” To this warning, Kissinger responded, “Yes, but that is in our interest.”41

On March 30, 1976, Ambassador Hill sent a seven-page assessment of the new regime to Kissinger. In the report, Hill wrote, “This is probably the best executed and most civilized coup in Argentine history.” One week later, US Congress approved a request from the Ford Administration, written by Kissinger, to provide $50 million in aid to the new military regime.42

Former Hamas captive Idan Alexander, a 21-year-old Israeli-American soldier, has announced he will return to the Israeli army to take part in its ongoing genocide on Gaza.

"Next month I will return to Israel and once again wear my [Israeli army] uniform, serving proudly alongside my brothers. My story doesn't end with survival – it continues with service. Until victory," Alexander declared at a Friends of the Israel Defence Forces (FIDF) event in the United States earlier this week.

Alexander was freed in May after Hamas said it would release him as a goodwill gesture to advance ceasefire talks and open the way for urgently needed humanitarian aid. Since Hamas’ gesture, the Trump administration has hardened its stance against Palestinians, backing the Israeli onslaught on Gaza and promoting ethnic cleansing.

New to Proxmox, Facing Issues with Homelab Setup - Need Advice

Hello everyone, I’m fairly new to Proxmox and struggling with my homelab setup. I have two machines running Proxmox 9: an HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini (Core i7-9700) and a Dell OptiPlex 7070 Micro (Core i3 9th gen). I’m running into several issues and would appreciate your insights.
Networking Issue on EliteDesk: I have two VMs (both Ubuntu Server 24.04 LTS) on the same bridge (default vmbr0, I haven't modified any network settings in proxmox). If I stop or shut down one VM, the other loses internet connectivity. I can still access the applications from my home network using IP address (192.268.x.x).

Backup Setup on OptiPlex: I’m running a Proxmox Backup Server VM with Backblaze B2 as an S3 datastore. This is working fine so far.
Backup Problems on EliteDesk: I’m using default LVM-thin for VMs. Backups take a very long time and often freeze at 1-2%. Shutting down the VM cleanly afterward is nearly impossible. I’ve tried both Stop and Snapshot modes, but the issue persists. When a VM becomes unresponsive, it triggers the networking issue above. Would switching to ZFS help? If so, how can I migrate without losing any data?
Hardware Acceleration for Jellyfin: On the EliteDesk, I’d like to enable hardware acceleration for a VM running Jellyfin (in Docker) using the i7-9700’s UHD 630 iGPU. Can anyone recommend a clear guide specific to this CPU? The Proxmox documentation isn’t very detailed for Intel GPUs.
The networking issue is the most frustrating. Has anyone encountered similar bridge problems? Any advice on fixes or next steps would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

this is odd, if everything in in a bridge, then a physical port to your switch/router should be your uplink. Check for MTU mismatches, and CRC errors on the cabling.
