How is Photoshop performance on WinApps?
I spent much of today trying to get WinApps running on NixOS. The VM performance is meh after following all the setup steps in the documentation, and I can't get the RDP part working. I'm not asking for help, which would probably take lots of back and forth commenting. but if I should even try to continue. The steps don't even mention Nix, only how to install dependencies via package managers.
I tried finding videos of Photoshop in WinApps but didn't find any, to see what performance actually looks like. Would it even be decent, or should I just suck it up and do GPU passthrough? Ideally I'd like Photoshop a window part of my linux desktop instead of switching back and forth between OSes. Making something work has been a PITA so far.

Documents offer rare insight on Ice’s close relationship with Palantir
cross-posted from: sh.itjust.works/post/46573950
For years, little was known about how Ice uses Palantir’s technology. The company has consistently described itself as a “data processor” and says it does not play an active role in any of its customers’ data collection efforts or what clients do with that information. Now, a cache of internal Ice documents – including hundreds of pages of emails between Ice and Palantir, as well as training manuals, and reports on the use of Palantir products – offer some of the first real-world examples of how Ice has used Palantir in its investigations and during on-the-ground enforcement operations.
The documents, which were obtained by immigrant legal rights group Just Futures Law through a Freedom of Information Act request and reviewed by the Guardian, largely cover Palantir’s contract with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of Ice that is responsible for stopping the “illegal movement of people, goods, money, contraband, weapons and sensitive technology”.
Palantir recently won a $30m contract to build the government a new platform called ImmigrationOS that will service Ice branches beyond HSI, and aims to “streamline” the identification and deportation of immigrants. While the documents are largely limited to HSI’s operations, it’s easy to see how the tools could be of use to other branches of Ice.
One document showed that agents could use Falcon to search for people’s names, known locations, vehicles or passport information against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal databases like the Enforcement Integrated Database (EID) – a vast database that holds biometric and personal information on anyone who has been encountered or arrested, detained or deported by any DHS agency – on the go.
In addition to collecting and analyzing field interviews, the agents used Falcon for “blueforce tracking”, a military term for tracking someone’s GPS location. Training documents show Ice agents could also use Falcon to track a person’s location, including their “route and movement”, hour by hour using cell phone tower records.

CGNAT and initial seeding
If I create a new torrent, does CGNAT (carrier-grade network address translation) prevent me from being an initial seeder of that torrent? I've made test torrents before and noticed that none of them seemed to be downloadable. Seeding the test torrents on a VPS of mine with a public IP has surprisingly worked before.
I can download and upload in my torrent client just fine, so I know my ISP isn't (intentionally) blocking and firewalling torrents.

I know my answer is not what you’re looking for but the other two comments should suffice so
Consider IPv6 if possible
I am actively considering IPv6. But I don't have it yet. Now I'm just waiting for my ISP to consider it 😀
Fuck ISPs that insist on keeping you stuck in CGNAT jail without a routable IPV6 prefix!
like this
If your box isn't globally addressable (because of NAT), your box can't be connected to. It works one way only, from the inside out - because the NAT-router keeps track of the connections your box makes to globally addressable hosts and forwards reply packages back to your box.
You could use IPv6 which because of the vast amounts of ipv6-addresses, eliminates the need for NAT. Or you could use a VPN or a tunneling service which gives you a dedicated IP. Or port forwarding from a globally addressable host. Either self hosted or as a service. Switch to an ISP which doesn't do CGNAT.
In short: ipv6 is easiest.😀
Edit: does anybody know if a non addressable seed box gets info about interested and globally addressable peers somehow (either tracker or tracker-less) so it can initiate a TCP connection to those peers? Are there resources to read up in that topic?

While I agree with the overall premise, it's not a great article. The author just quotes facts while drawing no relevant conclusions or wrong conclusions.
The fact that there is fraud in Estonia, like any other country, is, I imagine, due to people being stupid. In my country most fraud cases are grandmas handing off their pensions to randos to help their grandchild escape prison or to help with a super secret government mission to catch thieves. Similar to the classic Nigerian prince schemes. Not once does the author mention how digital ID's are connected to fraud or how they enabled money laundering.
I hope that the author is just not that great of a writer and not malicious because throwing in scary statistics and names like Palantir without making any conclusion as to how digital ID's could exarcebate the problem, really feels like fearmongering.
Nevertheless, I quite liked the website design and the extensive quotation of sources.
Will do. Also rereading my first comment I realised that I was perhaps overly negative which was not at all my intention. Apologies.
While your here, I wanted to ask if I missed anything from the article or is my criticism valid?

President Sheinbaum Refers to israel Crimes in Gaza as "Genocide"
cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/6217252
For the first time, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has acknowledged that israel is committing a genocide in Gaza, this morning at her daily press conference. Previously when questioned during her Mañaneras del Pueblo, the morning press conferences she holds, she referred to it as a “war,” and used more neutral language, despite Mexico signing on to both the International Court of Justice and International Criminal Court cases against israel in 2024.“We have supported, from President López Obrador and now all the complaints that have been presented together with the Chilean government regarding the situation in Gaza and the entire position, in agreement with the international community, is to stop this genocide in Gaza. That is our position,” she said.
“We want the genocide in Gaza to stop. There can be no aggression against the civilian population.”
“The first time that Mexico recognizes a Palestinian ambassador with all her rights is in our government,” the President added.
Mexico’s Ambassador to Colombia had attended the most recent Hague Group meeting where multiple countries, but had not joined in any of the actions other countries took against israel.
Over the weekend, a coalition of 300 trade unions initiated a campaign to pressure the Mexican government to take a proactive stance against the genocide, marching through Mexico City, and on Sunday evening, activists illuminated the Monument to the Revolution with a demand that President Claudia Sheinbaum condemn the genocide in Gaza, with projections stating that “neutrality was complicity,” and Mexico is with Palestine.
As a state signatory to the Genocide Convention, Mexico has obligations under international law to actively take measures to prevent and to punish the crime of genocide, including by enacting relevant legislation and punishing perpetrators, from public officials to private individuals, which could include multiple businesspeople who do business in Mexico, as well as IDF soldiers who vacation in the country. Mexico is also obligated to act to prevent genocide extraterritorially.

Hundreds plunge into Chicago River in city’s first open-water swim in nearly a century (results of governmental, environmental clean-up)
Swimming in the river used to be a key facet of Chicago life, but by the 1920s, sewage and industrial runoff had made the river unsafe to swim in. According to event organizers, official swim events in the Chicago River ended in 1926.
Event organizers said the Chicago River is now at its cleanest levels on record, the result of a concerted effort to clean up, improve wastewater management and push for stricter water-quality standards.
Maintaining the health of waterways in urban areas contributes to the public health and wellness of cities, and it reduces extreme heat risks from climate change, said Margaret Frisbie, executive director of Friends of the Chicago River.
The advocacy group, founded in 1979, has long worked to protect and restore the Chicago River, for example pushing for discharge from water treatment plants to be disinfected before being released into the river, Frisbie said.

JUNO completed liquid filling and begins data taking
New type of detector enables deeper understanding of the universeThe underground “Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO)” near Jiangmen city in the Guangdong Province, which was prepared with the participation of researchers from the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), has successfully completed the filling of its 20,000 tons of liquid scintillator and begun data taking. After more than a decade of preparation and construction, JUNO is the first of a new generation of very large neutrino experiments to reach this stage. Initial trial operation and data taking show that key performance indicators met or exceeded design expectations, enabling JUNO to tackle one of this decade’s major open questions in particle physics: the ordering of neutrino masses—whether the third mass state (ν₃) is heavier than the second (ν₂).
Wall Street Journal Seeks Dismissal Of Donald Trump’s Defamation Lawsuit Over Jeffrey Epstein Report: “The Article Is True”
The Wall Street Journal, its parent company and Rupert Murdoch asked a federal judge to dismiss Donald Trump‘s $10 billion defamation lawsuit over the publication’s report on the president’s past connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
“The First Amendment’s protections for truthful speech are the backbone of the Constitution,” the Journal’s attorneys wrote in their motion.
The attorneys also challenged the notion the that the article could have damaged Trump’s reputation, noting that he had “publicly admitted to ‘locker room talk’ and has made numerous bawdy public statements,” as well as to his relationship with Epstein.

Jimmy Kimmel to Return to ABC on Tuesday After Show’s Controversial Suspension
cross-posted from: beehaw.org/post/22300167
The ABC late-night host is returning to broadcast on Tuesday following a brief-but-monumental suspension that sparked a national debate over the Trump Administration’s pressure tactics and the modern limits and consequences of free speech.“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” ABC parent The Walt Disney Company said in a statement Monday. “It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”
Behind the scenes, sources says Kimmel wasn’t planning to apologize on that night’s show and instead was going to defend his original comments as being taken out of context and “grossly mischaracterized” by MAGA, which Disney brass thought would only inflame the situation. Disney/ABC then announced Jimmy Kimmel Live! was “suspended indefinitely.” On Thursday, a follow-up meeting between Kimmel and Disney execs reportedly ended in a stalemate with Kimmel sticking to his stated plan of unapologetically defending himself.Despite Kimmel’s return, it is not immediately clear if his show will be available across the entire country. Sinclair, for its part, had said that it would not go back to running Kimmel’s show on its stations until the late night host apologized for his comments, met with Sinclair representatives, and made a donation to Turning Point, the organization that Kirk founded. Sinclair, it should be noted, owns the ABC station in the Washington D.C. metro area, among other markets.
Nexstar, similarly, could also choose to continue to preempt the show, though of course it wiould still be accessible online across the country after it runs on ABC.

About rdp ,
1. make sure that OEM scripts was successful executed in windows ,they should appear at C:\oem
2. Do not forget to clean certificate of freerdp on host system there mention about it on github wiki of winapps

So I went with Gimp 3. It does everything I need. Gimp 2.10 didn't, but the new version, 3, does. Sure it has quirks: e.g. when selecting a layer with bg transparency, it selects the whole layer (including the empty parts) instead of just the parts that aren't empty -- you need to do layers -> alpha to selection to get the contents. Another one: to get transparency when you delete parts of a layer is to add an alpha channel to that layer (otherwise you get a bg color). But if you learn these few quirks, Gimp does everything photoshop does pretty much.
If you have old PSD files that have adjustment layers or smart objects, pass them via Photopea, and export as TIFF. Then load on Gimp3 and move to that for life.
