Questions after coming from Lemmy
Hi folks,
I was using Lemmy for the better part of two years and thought I'd come over to piefed and see what's up. A few things puzzled me and I'm hoping this is the best place to ask.
- It seems all top level comments are locked for replies - is that a server thing? A federation thing?
- Scrolling through All, the content just... stops. I'm using the Boost client (maybe that's why?). I get it if I'm sorting by top hour - there's only so much posted per hour. But it's the same for Hot, Scaled, Active, etc.
Edit: looks like both of these are issues with the Boost client. Switching to Summit on Android resolves both.
Thanks for the help!
I don’t know why All would stop like that, it shouldn’t do.

Feds Disappear Trans People from “LGBT”
The Trump administration’s war on diversity has a new casualty, removing the “T” (for “transgender”) from “LGBT” in its internal threat reports, according to copies I’ve obtained.
Two federal intelligence reports warning of threats to Pride Day events in June make repeated reference to the dangers to the “LGB+ community” with no mention whatsoever of transgender people. This comes amid the Trump administration’s campaign to capitalize on the death of Charlie Kirk to wage war on transgender suspects as “nihilist violent extremists.”
The sad irony here is that transgender people suffer the highest rate of hate crimes of any group within the LGBT community, underscoring how strange it is to omit them from reports intended to enhance public safety.
Adoption of the “LBG+” acronym has been observed in several other federal agencies since Trump took office, including, as I reported at the time, the State Department. The use of the term by the national security state has not been previously reported.

She has more in common with the fish that she speaks to. She's basically a magic dolphin.
Meanwhile, the people in the OP image are humans (to my knowledge, I'm not a nerd). Humans who have lived in the human world with human pasts full of human culture which give context to their characterization. I'm sure their background stories matter to their fans.
Nobody argues about what color the scales on Ariel's tail should be.

in reply to Ecco the dolphin • • •I'll defer to your delphine expertise. Although Snow White is the one that really got me, she's explicitly described in the text, her snow white skin is her primary physical characteristic.
Don't get me wrong, I am upset about the others, or at least as upset as is reasonable for the ethnicities of fictional characters. But consistency is consistency. I'd rather see more stories from diverse cultures than arbitrary race-switching.

anyway as an 1800s fairy tale for children, imo i think it's fine to view it through the lens of whichever culture you want. the trouble imo begins when trying to ascribe something to the story which it certainly did not contain - even that is probably basically harmless if you're just confused or something, but it certainly becomes a problem when it's used to justify unfairly shitting on someone else for a slightly different yet completely harmless alternative depiction.

got this from hearsay so take it with a grain of salt. but if it’s true, it’s nice that the original visions can be fulfilled now!
(and even if it’s not true, more BIPOC in movies is never a bad thing, even if it comes at the cost of red-haired characters, which whatever it’s not like we’re systematically oppressed)
