Microsoft blocks Israel’s use of its technology in mass surveillance of Palestinians

Microsoft has terminated the Israeli military's access to technology it used to operate a powerful surveillance system that collected millions of Palestinian civilian phone calls made each day in Gaza and the West Bank, the Guardian can reveal.

Microsoft told Israeli officials late last week that Unit 8200, the military's elite spy agency, had violated the company's terms of service by storing the vast trove of surveillance data in its Azure cloud platform, sources familiar with the situation said.

The decision to cut off Unit 8200's ability to use some of its technology results directly from an investigation published by the Guardian last month. It revealed how Azure was being used to store and process the trove of Palestinian communications in a mass surveillance programme.

UK will not give diplomatic protection to its citizens on Gaza flotilla

The British government has said it cannot offer diplomatic protection to its citizens onboard the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, as Italy and Spain send ships to accompany it following an Israeli attack on Wednesday morning.

Mathilda Mallinson, MEE's correspondent onboard one of the flotilla's boats, said the British Foreign Office told her mother it was "unable to offer" diplomatic protection.

Diplomatic protection is action the UK can take against another country for injury caused to a British national, or their property, in violation of international law.

One boat Israel apparently bombed in Tunis, Alma, is a British vessel and flies the British flag. At least 13 people on the flotilla are British citizens.

Spain and Italy have sent naval ships into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy dispatched a frigate on Wednesday after an Israeli drone attack on the flotilla in international waters.

in reply to geneva_convenience

I have to wonder. Never having tried to enter an active war zone.

Is it in any way normal for the UK to give protection to any citizens intentionally doing so. Especially in advance of the event.

ATM the boats are in international waters. Or Tunisas water for smee attacks. So diplomatic protection has little to do with it. Bombing foreign registered boats outside your own waters is an act of war. So the UK and Tunisia should have diplomats screaming at them. At the least. And clearly has a duty to aid them in international waters.

This is in no way normal. Starmer explicitly states that Israel is more important than UK citizens. And that Israel is free to murder any UK citizen it wants.

The US has prevented Iranian diplomats from going anywhere beyond the perimeters of UN headquarters and buying anything from the wholesale club stores in New York city, calling the measure a part of its unilateral sanctions regime.

The weird thing about the US using political terms slightly differently to the rest of the world. LIberal is a prime example.

you start talking to them and they start mentioning bullshit like "small government" "big government" "DEI" and the constitution
in reply to mub

I once posted on some Reddit sub that my local government is Liberal Democrat and some shitizen went off on how stupid I am and how that doesn't even make sense. I don't live in the US, and Liberal Democrat is the name of a party where I am 🤷‍♂️
in reply to mub

Kinda? Liberals in the US Empire are very much liberals, it's just that conservatives are also liberals. Some people use "liberal" as a stand-in for left not because liberalism is left (it isn't), but because it's left within the tiny overton window off on the far right that is the US. Leftists are still called as such, usually.

How to work out

Hi all,

I recently found out that as a part of my job I get access to a small gym in the building. I think it has your basic cardio equipment and some other stuff for building muscle (but small enough I don't think there is equipment to do stuff like dead-lifts or whatever in there).

I don't know anything about working out really, but I could stand to lose some fat, which draws my attention to the treadmill that they have. I am not so concerned about building muscle and everything that involves.

I have mostly neglected going to gyms for 3 reasons.
- They are usually out of my way
- I don't usually have the time
- I don't want to spend what they charge

All three of these are now non-factors now that I have found out I have access to this one.

I would be using it twice a week as that is how often I am actually at the location.

So my question is, since it's not really something I have ever looked at - if I want to lose a bunch of fat, what do I do? I can try to diet first off, and I am glad to take suggestions on what worked for other people in that regard, but more so I just don't know how long or how fast I should run, what equipment is good for this otherwise, or really anything about using a gym.

Please note that the facility is self-serve and has no staff - they just have cleaners come in each day to clean it, the rest is up to you. I do not have the money to spend on something like a personal trainer, and the location doesn't offer such things as well given its self-serve nature.

Thank you.

in reply to golden_zealot

Fat is energy. If you use more energy than you put in, you lose weight. If you use less energy, you gain weight.

Losing fat is like putting gasoline in your car. If you put in 2 gallons but you only drive for 1 gallon, then there will be gas left in the tank. Likewise your body will turn excess energy into fat. W hen you use more energy than you put in, your body will start burning fat.

If you want to lose fat hit the biggest muscle group which uses the most energy (your legs)

Besides outertune there's harmonymusic as well

None protect your IP if not using a non self hosted frontend like invidio or piped, cause if self hosted then you're providing your IP any ways. So now a days actually private is kind of hard. But these applications for sure help a lot.

I tried it out on my laptop that's running Fedora and so far it's great. it's a shame that the development of it has ended.

I'm thinking of using Outertune when i get myself a pixel and install GrapheneOS on it.

The ICE Shooter’s Motive

The deadly sniper attack on a Dallas ICE facility this morning seemed straightforward, with “ANTI-ICE” engraved on unspent shell casings recovered from the scene, per the FBI. But after interviewing several of the alleged shooter’s former friends, the picture isn’t so clear.

Within minutes of the shooting, FBI Director Kash Patel posted on X: “While the investigation is ongoing, an initial review of the evidence shows an idealogical [sic] motive behind this attack (see photo below).”

On the off-chance the shooting wasn’t what it looked like, I reached out to people who knew the gunman, 29-year-old Joshua Jahn. Three who knew him since at least middle school agreed to speak to me on the condition that I not name them, corroborating their friendship with photos and other records. Their accounts paint the picture of someone with a vaguely libertarian bent who despised both major parties and politicians generally (including Trump) but who didn’t engage with politics beyond that. He preferred edgy humor, video games and the message board 4chan, all of which he became increasingly steeped in as he withdrew from social life as well as their own friendships several years ago, they said.

None of his former friends believed that the “ANTI-ICE” inscription could possibly be sincere, feeling such a serious political statement was anathema to who Jahn was. His humor was deeply ironic, often offensive and aggressive to the point of alienation.

“He was most certainly an edgelord, an irony guy,” one friend said. (Edgelord is online-speak for someone who likes to espouse edgy, nihilistic views). Asked about the inscription on the bullet, the friend said: “Josh was an edgelord who wanted someone to get blamed. I think he tried his best to write something goofy … to rile people up.”

The media is so ill equipped to handle this seemingly new wave of terminally online domestic terrorists. No one can tell me the internet isn't real life when my 58 year old mom knows what a groyper or an edgelord is now.

Reporting Ban Evasions

I know the mod report system isn’t perfect, but if you are submitting a mod report that alleges a user is a previously banned user trying to evade a ban, please message me (or us) explaining why you think or how you know that. If the post isn’t breaking any of the other rules, the only piece of evidence I have to go on is that the account is new and submitting a post, but we can’t use that as sole criteria for identifying whether someone is or isn’t evading a ban.

Artix Linux drop support for GNOME

Some of you have probably seen the blog post a few months ago about how GNOME is more strongly depending on systemd. The changes mentioned there have landed into the latest stable versions of the mentioned software (GNOME 49) and do affect us. In particular, the main culprit is the removal of the non-systemd fallback code in gnome-session. This makes it currently impossible to launch gnome-shell/mutter on a non-systemd system. A fairly straightforward patch of using elogind, like what was previously done, no longer works either.

Since we don't have the time or interest to write a new non-systemd codepath for gnome-session, this means that all support for gnome-based desktops has to be dropped. In particular, the affected packages would be gnome-session, gnome-shell, mutter, and gnome-settings-daemon. For now, the old versions are still in the repos but because there is so much intertwining between other gtk/gnome packages, there is no guarantee they actually work and will later be removed from our repos.

Standalone gnome applications will still continue to be packaged, but it is simply not feasible anymore to support gnome desktops without systemd.

XLibre
The current version of XLibre is 25.0.0.12 and it used by many of our users as a daily driver so quite stable. Technically, XLibre is still X11 and compatible to all X11 clients as laid out in Compatibility of XLibre · X11Libre/xserver Wiki. We will shortly be releasing version 25.1.0, which we aim to stabilize for general availability in version 25.1.3 at the latest.
