Microsoft said it found that Israel was violating some terms of service for its products and that it does “not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians.”
The review found evidence that Israel was using Microsoft’s cloud storage services to hold surveillance data on Palestinians, according to a company blog post. The data included records of millions of phone calls made daily between Palestinians, confirming reporting this year from The Guardian and the Israeli news site +972.

NATO, EU have ‘declared war’ on Russia through Ukraine, Lavrov claims. Sergey Lavrov alleged that NATO and the EU had moved beyond indirect support and were now parties to the war.

Moscow envoy threatens war if NATO shoots down Russian aircraft. NATO potentially shooting down Russian planes in its airspace “would be war,” Russian Ambassador to France, Alexey Meshkov, said in an interview with the RTL news channel published on Sept. 25.

Europe, NATO ready to shoot down Russian jets, Bloomberg reports. European diplomats warned Russian officials this week that NATO is prepared to respond to further airspace violations with force, including by shooting down Russian planes, Bloomberg reported Sept. 25.

Zelensky says he won’t seek re-election after war, will push for elections during potential ceasefire. “It’s not my goal — elections… My goal is to finish the war,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said.

‘How well they burn’ — Ukraine destroys 2 Russian An-26 transport aircraft, radar stations in occupied Crimea, HUR says. The strike was part of ongoing efforts to destroy high-value Russian assets on the peninsula, Ukraine’s military intelligence (HUR) said.

Major Russian chemical plant reportedly halts operations after Ukrainian drone attack. EuroChem-Belorechensk specializes in nitrogen and complex fertilizers but also produces phosphorus-based products and sulfuric acid, a key component in ammunition manufacturing.

Ukraine’s sea drones ‘paralyze‘ Russian Black Sea oil hubs, HUR source says. “Naval drones targeted key logistics facilities belonging to the aggressor state on the Black Sea coast,” the source said.

Kremlin officials ‘will have to know where the bomb shelters are,’ Zelensky says. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for such strikes, saying, “We will work on it.”

Trump says Russia ‘gained virtually no land‘ in Ukraine offensive despite heavy costs. “With all of the heavy bombardment over the last two weeks, they’ve gained almost no land,” Trump told the press in the White House during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Ukrainian military strikes 3 gas distribution stations in occupied Luhansk. The Ukrainian military struck three gas distribution stations in the Russian-occupied part of Luhansk Oblast overnight on Sept. 25, according to military officials.

Human cost of Russia’s war

General Staff: Russia has lost 1,105,490 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022. The number includes 940 casualties that Russian forces suffered over the past day.

International response

US scrambles jets after Russian warplanes enter international airspace near Alaska. NORAD dispatched an E-3, four F-16s, and four KC-135 tankers to track two Russian Tu-95 bombers and two Su-35 fighter jets.

Hungarian fighter jets intercept 5 Russian aircraft over Baltic Sea. The Russian aircraft — including three MiG-31s, a Su-30, and a Su-35 —flew over the Baltic Sea near Latvian airspace.

Denmark weighs NATO Article 4 after more suspicious drone incursions. “If we get the opportunity, we will take down the drones,” Danish Police Inspector Jesper Bojgaard Madsen said. The incident comes two days after suspicious drone activity shut down Cophenhagen Airport on Sept. 22.

Greece extradites Moldova’s once most powerful oligarch Vladimir Plahotniuc. Vladimir Plahotniuc, once seen as the most powerful figure in Moldova, faces charges in three criminal cases, including his alleged role in the 2014 “theft of a billion dollars” from major banks.

Trump’s Ukraine rhetoric shift signals reduced US involvement, Poland’s Tusk says. “Behind this surprising optimism lies a signal of reduced U.S. involvement and a shift of responsibility for ending the war to Europe,” Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said. “Better truth than illusions.”

Ukraine’s First Lady Zelenska meets Melania Trump to discuss children affected by war. Olena Zelenska thanked Melania Trump “for her support of Ukraine, particularly for her attention to children who have become victims of Russia’s brutal war.”

Merz calls on EU to use frozen Russian assets for Ukraine defense loan. Russian fuel crisis escalates as half of gas stations in occupied Crimea halt gasoline sales, Kremlin extends export ban. The disruption follows a wave of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian oil refineries in August, which have strained supplies and forced Moscow to cut exports.

Ukrainian cyber operatives disrupt Russian banking payment system, intelligence source says. A DDoS attack on the SPB payment system and the telecom provider Transtelekom on Sept. 24 allegedly disrupted instant transfers and online payments for many users.

Blackout at Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant enters 3rd day after grid strike. “This creates a critical situation that threatens the security of not only Ukraine but also European countries,” Energoatom said.

Trump's TikTok deal payment criticized as 'shakedown scheme' by experts

The Trump administration recently approached a coalition of U.S. investors set to take over TikTok's U.S. operations with an ask: Will the group make a payment to the federal government "in the low billions," according to a person with direct knowledge of the talks.

The response from the investors, which includes tech mogul Larry Ellison, the Murdochs and venture capital heavyweight Andreessen Horowitz, was an unequivocal yes.

"Not a single member balked," said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly. "They see it as something of a finders' fee."

Welcome to President Trump's new business agenda: extracting payments as if the federal government is brokering deals like a white-shoe consulting firm fueled by lucrative "fees for service."

Where does Palantir get the data from to begin with?

They don't have a social media service, right? So where do they get the data to train their AI models ? Surely they need a lot, right? It would be nice if the public knew who cooperates with them (other than governments) and just boycott their services, or at least pressure them.

If company X doesn't offer your data to governments officials, but offers them to Palantir which makes a profile of you that it offer to the same officials, isn't that even worse ?

in reply to zaknenou

They don't. They sell tools to governments and companies, that the clients use with their own data, that they already have. Palantir doesn't do the spying or data harvesting, and they don't have any data of their own, they develop and sell tools that clients use with whatever data the clients have.

They make the spy tools, they are not doing the spying.

I used to run in consulting circles, long enough time around execs and you start to see just how well the good ol boy clubs, and know-a-guy chains can make business deals between firms. Once you get the ball rolling on a project as a large enough entity, it doesn't take much to consult the digital equivalent of their rolodex to find vendor upon vendor for this part, this data broker, etc.

Cheaper in bulk too.

New digital ID scheme to be rolled out across UK

Welp, this is gonna be a privacy clusterfuck.

Genuine question: how is this a privacy invasion? Isn't it simply digitising the already needed paperwork?

ID Cards are a big hot button issue in the UK. We only really had them in the UK during the Second World War as a matter of national security, but after that they were scrapped.

Basically this document will not stop illegal working (because you know, people who hire illegal workers don't check paperwork) but what they will do is link everything to your card, especially with the Online Safety Act. Said something like "Palestine Action shouldn't be Proscribed"? You can be flagged and the Cops can notice that when they scan your card. Transgender? That can be flagged and the Cops will treat you differently.

Add to that the idea of a Politcal Party like Reform getting into power and you can imagine how much of a clusterfuck this will be if they decide to have a "War on Woke".

in reply to abbiistabbii

But are they not already able to have a file linked to your physical ID? What difference does digitising ID make in that regard?
in reply to abbiistabbii

Basically this document will not stop illegal working (because you know, people who hire illegal workers don't check paperwork)

Totally agree on this, but as for the rest, I'm guessing this only expedites linking up information by virtue of it being in a computerised system rather than enabling it at all.
It is very worrisome that a party like that could get into power, but it doesn't change how it's always been, we are at the "mercy" of our government, if they want to single out a demographic and actively hamper it, they will find a way regardless of the tools in use.

To focus on this as a bad aspect looks to me like it's sort of missing the point, this more or less should provide an easier management of information.
What could be argued instead, is that it is locking out people who don't have the access to devices enabled to it, which is a real problem if they want to phase out papers completely. Here in Italy already with the IO app we can (so it's currently fully optional) have our driving licence digitised, but that single feature doesn't work (at least for now, and it's been almost a year by now that support hasn't been added) on GrapheneOS, for example.
I think the real issues are two: a hostile government, which holds true regardless of methods, and lack of support for secure and private platforms which the citizens should 100% be entitled to use

Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

Microsoft will provide free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 in the European Economic Area through October 13, 2026, but with specific conditions1. While users won't need to enable Windows Backup or use Microsoft Rewards points, they must sign in with a Microsoft Account at least once every 60 days to maintain access to updates2.

"If your Microsoft Account is not used to sign in for a period of up to 60 days, ESU updates will be discontinued, and you'll need to re-enroll by signing in using the same MSA," Microsoft confirmed3.

This change came after pressure from Euroconsumers, who argued that linking security updates to Microsoft's cloud services raised concerns under the Digital Markets Act4. The free ESU program applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in the EEA (European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway)5.

Outside the EEA, users still must either enable Windows Backup, redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay approximately $30 for ESU access2.

Polish missile hit house during Russian drone incursion, says minister

The object that hit a house in an eastern Polish village earlier this month was likely a missile fired by a Polish aircraft that was intended to shoot down Russian drones in the NATO-member's airspace, a government minister said on Wednesday.

Polish authorities initially said the home in the village of Wyryki-Wola had likely been hit by one of the 21 Russian drones that entered Poland's airspace on the night of September 9-10.

However, Rzeczpospolita daily reported on Tuesday, citing sources, that the house was hit by a missile fired from a Polish F-16 fighter jet whose guidance system malfunctioned.

"Everything indicates that it was a missile fired by our plane, defending Poland, defending the fatherland, defending our citizens," the Minister Responsible for Poland's Special Services Tomasz Siemoniak told TVN24.

Fallo facile

NO falso anche noi ~~riusciamo~~ possiamo muoverci facile dobbiamo solo lasciare andare!

Installing Fedora 42 KDE, bios doesn't see my ssd anymore.

Update 2: eventually I decided to just go with it and install MX instead as a final attempt(because I just happened to have that on a stick on my desk) and it worked. I have a functional machine again. Thx for all the input guys!

Update: reinstalling fedora, it’s extremely slow and it’s going beyond 100%. I fkd up didn’t I?

Another case of "normie wants to ditch W11 for Linux and got backed into a corner".

I have used Linux for a while about 20 years ago, however installing it on a modern machine is new to me.

Timeline/Data:

-Recent Dell XPS laptop

-Decrypted the SSD in W11 through shell

-Booted Fedora 42 from a usb (everything works, yay!)

-Installed on the entire disc (as intended, byebye W11)

-Reboot=> Bios doesn't see the SSD anymore, a few reboots later I get a prompt to enter my "code" (not the typical bitlocker screen, I assume my Windows Pin?), before I even get the chance to select the damn prompt it's already gone. After which Bios reset itself to og settings (secure boot and whatnot)

-Bios still doesn't see the SSD.

-Fedora live does see the SSD.

What do I do now?
Thx in advance!

It surely cannot be this, right:

Try this: grub2-install --efi-directory=/boot; grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.

Downloading drm streams

Hello, my school hosts lectures on SharePoint, however, these lectures are view only and the stream data is drm locked. Are there any tools to download drm locked content or SharePoint videos? yt-dlp says it's drm locked, and ffmpeg says it's malformed. I tried looking through the megathread but mostly found things to find content, not download it.
in reply to HappyFrog

yt-dlp crew explicitly state they won't touch DRM for good reasons, and that's fair. Companies using it for malicious reasons like paywalling/gatekeeping education are assholes.

I found two places with guides on how to use yt-dlp or ffmpeg:
Stack Overflow
Reddit

Failing that, OBS (you might be able to stream the file through VLC first, idk) is your friend

I tried these methods already. It was this stream link that yt-dlp said was drm locked and ffmpeg aaid was malformed. I'll try the obs method later. Thank you :3

Edit: looking closer I didn't shorten the url. I might try this later.

I'm wondering if the issue is SharePoint, not any DRM. yt-dlp and ffmpeg wouldn't be logged in, causing the problem. Try this:

  1. Login into sharepoint in your browser
  2. Get cookies for the page using a plugin, there are a variety of them out there and depends on your browser, but should be easy to find
  3. Using the file you download, run yt-dlp like this:

yt-dlp --cookies=cookies.txt <url> -S proto:dash

Yay, finally I can upgrade to newer software versions!!!

Been using cosmic ui on and off since the beta release and it is still pretty beta. Really good at this point honestly and a huge achievement for them but not without some annoying bugs for me.

Just something to consider before jumping. You should be ready to work around some annoyances, deal with some slowness/quirks, and probably be ready to provide feedback and bug reports.

I tried one of the earlier alphas a year ago and it was too rough to daily drive, but I’ve been looking forward to beta. It’s not often we get a completely new DE so it’s very exciting.

I installed it yesterday and have been using it for a few hours. I love how smooth and responsive it feels. You can feel the benefits of being built from scratch in Rust. I wish the UI was more customizable, since I come from KDE and have very strong preferences on desktop layout, but it’s otherwise an improvement on GNOME’s ideas, as far as I’m concerned. It will be very appealing to Mac expats, which is S76’s key audience, I think. It’s a hard sell for Windows or KDE users.

One thing I do love versus KDE is the common sense naming conventions. The files tool is called “Files” and the terminal is called “Terminal” and the text editor is called “Text Editor.” There are no ridiculous, ambiguous names for the default apps.

The built-in tiling features are also absolutely wonderful. They work so well, so fluidly, and so intuitively. I am going to have a hard time giving that up when I switch back to KDE.

However, it still has a lot of rough edges and is not ready for less-technical users right now. Networking is squirrelly, the UI briefly freezes sometimes in very isolated and frustrating ways.

I’m going to continue using it over the weekend, but I am likely going back to Fedora + KDE next week. I like the direction that COSMIC is going, but I need more customization and stability before it can be a daily driver for me.
