Wissam Hamada, the mother of Hind Rajab, and several members of her family safely evacuated from Gaza to a third country on Thursday after protracted negotiations with the state of Israel for her release, a source involved in the exfiltration told Drop Site.

Five-year-old Hind was killed by Israeli soldiers in January 2024, along with six other members of her family in Gaza City. Her killing made global headlines after a recording of her call with Palestinian emergency dispatchers pleading to be rescued was posted online.

On January 29, 2024, the car Hind was in was shot at by the Israeli military, killing her uncle, aunt, and three cousins. Relatives called the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in Ramallah seeking help. When a team member called the number provided, Hind’s 15-year-old cousin, Layan Hamada, the only other survivor in the car, picked up. Layan told them there was an Israeli tank nearby shooting at them. Layan can be heard screaming amid the sound of intense machine gun fire, after which, the call went dead. The rescue team called the phone back, and Hind answered, telling them that Layan had been shot and killed, she had been injured, and everyone in the car was dead. She said she could see the tank and that it was getting closer.

Israel Is Flattening Areas of Gaza City

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/36701801

Sept. 26, 2025
This has exacerbated what was already a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, with rampant hunger, mass displacement and a collapse of health care, schools and infrastructure. Many war-weary Gaza City residents say they simply cannot or will not be displaced again, and many have no homes to return to.

While closing in on Gaza City, Israel has used existing buildings as bases, only to later destroy them with explosives before moving onward, according to satellite images and videos verified by NYT.

One video shows the military destroying AlFurqan school in the city, which it had earlier used as a military position.

When you want to build new settlements the best is to flatten the foundation no? I'm surprised they didn't make holes for basements.

Italy sends second warship to protect flotilla – but asks it to surrender its aid to Israel

cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/6251000

cross-posted from: ibbit.at/post/64652
Italy has despatched a second warship to support the humanitarian Global Sumud Flotilla en route to deliver aid to Gaza and break Israel’s criminal starvation blockade, following continued – now nightly – Israeli attacks on the fleet of volunteer-crewed boats.

But at the same time, the Italian government has tried to pressure the flotilla to capitulate to Israeli demands to surrender its aid supplies – in this case to the local Catholic Church, which Israel will supposedly allow to distribute the aid in Gaza unmolested, despite the occupation’s diversion of aid to the criminal gangs it funds and its near-daily slaughter of desperate Palestinian aid-seekers.

Italy sending more support to the Global Sumud Flotilla – but with demands

The Global Sumud Flotilla consists of around fifty civilian vessels crewed by lawyers, politicians, medics and activists and has been repeatedly bombed by drones and buzzed by fighter aircraft, now with the added psychological warfare of drones playing loud music all night to try to deprive crews of sleep. Despite this one-sided aggression, the Israeli government is claiming that it is the unarmed humanitarian volunteers who are ‘pursuing violence’.

Italy sent a first naval ship earlier this week to ‘assist’ the flotilla after it was bombed by at least fifteen drones in international waters near Greece. Spain followed suit shortly afterward. So far, no crew member has been reported killed or seriously hurt.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni said the government’s proposal was to hand the aid over in Cyprus to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem for distribution in Gaza, and tried to blame the flotilla organisers for not accepting the ‘offer’.

Israel continues to maintain its vice-like grip on food and other essentials in Gaza while shooting and shelling starving aid-seekers at the ‘GHF’ so-called ‘aid’ stations it controls and funding an ISIS-linked criminal gang to steal aid and kill Palestinian refugees.

The flotilla crews have said they will continue on their mission to deliver the aid directly.

Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

Microsoft will provide free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 in the European Economic Area through October 13, 2026, but with specific conditions[^1]. While users won't need to enable Windows Backup or use Microsoft Rewards points, they must sign in with a Microsoft Account at least once every 60 days to maintain access to updates[^2].

"If your Microsoft Account is not used to sign in for a period of up to 60 days, ESU updates will be discontinued, and you'll need to re-enroll by signing in using the same MSA," Microsoft confirmed[^3].

This change came after pressure from Euroconsumers, who argued that linking security updates to Microsoft's cloud services raised concerns under the Digital Markets Act[^4]. The free ESU program applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in the EEA (European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway)[^5].

Outside the EEA, users still must either enable Windows Backup, redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay approximately $30 for ESU access[^2].

[^1]: BleepingComputer - Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

[^2]: Windows Central - Microsoft will revoke free access to Windows 10's extended security updates in the EEA

[^3]: WindowsLatest - No, you'll still need a Microsoft account for Windows 10 ESU in Europe

[^4]: The Verge - Microsoft forced to make Windows 10 extended security updates truly free in Europe

How safe is web archive for software?

Ive seen that there are software you can download on web archive (archive.org), but it isnt listed in the megathread.

Should I suppose that it is as safe as it is downloading random stuff from the internet?

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to Blastboom Strice

Yes, literally anyone can upload stuff to archive.org, so you should assume you're downloading random stuff from an unknown person on the internet and take precautions accordingly. 😀
in reply to Cevilia (she/they/…)

All uploads go through an AV scan, though. But yeah, better be safe than sorry.

in reply to Dialectical Idealist

Managers and executives are critical to the operation of the company though, companies aren't just hollow shells full of workers and machines.
in reply to leafperson [any, any]

You are technically correct, in the literal sense that managers and executives have work to do.

It should be noted, however, that it is the workers (not the company owners/investors) that create all the products that are up for sale and the infrastructure necessary to begin production (e.g., roads, bridges, electricity, education, etc.). Hence, when a CEO say that they "built" the company, they are obfuscating the exploitation of the labor of workers who transform raw materials into all the useful commodities we enjoy.

in reply to leafperson [any, any]

But they don't necessarily have to earn so much more than the average worker.
in reply to JustVik

ahh but how else would you ensure they are ready to push their team beyond reason?
in reply to leafperson [any, any]

managers and executives are workes too, and noone is saying they do no work. But their value is greatly inflated. Aswell as them taking all the credit for work of others.
But in the end the worst are the owners and investors who litteraly just steal.

Microsoft said it found that Israel was violating some terms of service for its products and that it does “not provide technology to facilitate mass surveillance of civilians.”
The review found evidence that Israel was using Microsoft’s cloud storage services to hold surveillance data on Palestinians, according to a company blog post. The data included records of millions of phone calls made daily between Palestinians, confirming reporting this year from The Guardian and the Israeli news site +972.

Ukraine’s sea drones ‘paralyze‘ Russian Black Sea oil hubs, HUR source says. “Naval drones targeted key logistics facilities belonging to the aggressor state on the Black Sea coast,” the source said.

Kremlin officials ‘will have to know where the bomb shelters are,’ Zelensky says. According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed support for such strikes, saying, “We will work on it.”

Trump says Russia ‘gained virtually no land‘ in Ukraine offensive despite heavy costs. “With all of the heavy bombardment over the last two weeks, they’ve gained almost no land,” Trump told the press in the White House during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Trump's TikTok deal payment criticized as 'shakedown scheme' by experts

The Trump administration recently approached a coalition of U.S. investors set to take over TikTok's U.S. operations with an ask: Will the group make a payment to the federal government "in the low billions," according to a person with direct knowledge of the talks.

The response from the investors, which includes tech mogul Larry Ellison, the Murdochs and venture capital heavyweight Andreessen Horowitz, was an unequivocal yes.

"Not a single member balked," said the person, who was not authorized to speak publicly. "They see it as something of a finders' fee."

Welcome to President Trump's new business agenda: extracting payments as if the federal government is brokering deals like a white-shoe consulting firm fueled by lucrative "fees for service."

Where does Palantir get the data from to begin with?

They don't have a social media service, right? So where do they get the data to train their AI models ? Surely they need a lot, right? It would be nice if the public knew who cooperates with them (other than governments) and just boycott their services, or at least pressure them.

If company X doesn't offer your data to governments officials, but offers them to Palantir which makes a profile of you that it offer to the same officials, isn't that even worse ?

in reply to zaknenou

They don't. They sell tools to governments and companies, that the clients use with their own data, that they already have. Palantir doesn't do the spying or data harvesting, and they don't have any data of their own, they develop and sell tools that clients use with whatever data the clients have.

They make the spy tools, they are not doing the spying.

I used to run in consulting circles, long enough time around execs and you start to see just how well the good ol boy clubs, and know-a-guy chains can make business deals between firms. Once you get the ball rolling on a project as a large enough entity, it doesn't take much to consult the digital equivalent of their rolodex to find vendor upon vendor for this part, this data broker, etc.

Cheaper in bulk too.

New digital ID scheme to be rolled out across UK

Welp, this is gonna be a privacy clusterfuck.
in reply to abbiistabbii

Genuine question: how is this a privacy invasion? Isn't it simply digitising the already needed paperwork?

ID Cards are a big hot button issue in the UK. We only really had them in the UK during the Second World War as a matter of national security, but after that they were scrapped.

Basically this document will not stop illegal working (because you know, people who hire illegal workers don't check paperwork) but what they will do is link everything to your card, especially with the Online Safety Act. Said something like "Palestine Action shouldn't be Proscribed"? You can be flagged and the Cops can notice that when they scan your card. Transgender? That can be flagged and the Cops will treat you differently.

Add to that the idea of a Politcal Party like Reform getting into power and you can imagine how much of a clusterfuck this will be if they decide to have a "War on Woke".

in reply to abbiistabbii

But are they not already able to have a file linked to your physical ID? What difference does digitising ID make in that regard?

Totally agree on this, but as for the rest, I'm guessing this only expedites linking up information by virtue of it being in a computerised system rather than enabling it at all.
It is very worrisome that a party like that could get into power, but it doesn't change how it's always been, we are at the "mercy" of our government, if they want to single out a demographic and actively hamper it, they will find a way regardless of the tools in use.

To focus on this as a bad aspect looks to me like it's sort of missing the point, this more or less should provide an easier management of information.
What could be argued instead, is that it is locking out people who don't have the access to devices enabled to it, which is a real problem if they want to phase out papers completely. Here in Italy already with the IO app we can (so it's currently fully optional) have our driving licence digitised, but that single feature doesn't work (at least for now, and it's been almost a year by now that support hasn't been added) on GrapheneOS, for example.
I think the real issues are two: a hostile government, which holds true regardless of methods, and lack of support for secure and private platforms which the citizens should 100% be entitled to use

Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

Microsoft will provide free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 in the European Economic Area through October 13, 2026, but with specific conditions1. While users won't need to enable Windows Backup or use Microsoft Rewards points, they must sign in with a Microsoft Account at least once every 60 days to maintain access to updates2.

"If your Microsoft Account is not used to sign in for a period of up to 60 days, ESU updates will be discontinued, and you'll need to re-enroll by signing in using the same MSA," Microsoft confirmed3.

This change came after pressure from Euroconsumers, who argued that linking security updates to Microsoft's cloud services raised concerns under the Digital Markets Act4. The free ESU program applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in the EEA (European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway)5.

Outside the EEA, users still must either enable Windows Backup, redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay approximately $30 for ESU access2.
