Federal vs Local Control: What does Trumps Crackdown on D.C. Law Enforcement look like?

What do clashes like this tell us about the balance between public safety, local autonomy, and executive power in the U.S.?

"In August of 2025, President Trump invoked Section 740 of the D.C. Home Rule Act, declaring a ‘public safety emergency’ in Washington, D.C after citing rampant crime. Under this order, he could place the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) under federal control for 30 days. Between August 11 and September 10, over 2,000 National Guard troops were deployed alongside local forces to patrol the streets. During this time, over 40% of the arrests made in D.C. were immigration-related."

Wissam Hamada, the mother of Hind Rajab, and several members of her family safely evacuated from Gaza to a third country on Thursday after protracted negotiations with the state of Israel for her release, a source involved in the exfiltration told Drop Site.

Five-year-old Hind was killed by Israeli soldiers in January 2024, along with six other members of her family in Gaza City. Her killing made global headlines after a recording of her call with Palestinian emergency dispatchers pleading to be rescued was posted online.

On January 29, 2024, the car Hind was in was shot at by the Israeli military, killing her uncle, aunt, and three cousins. Relatives called the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) in Ramallah seeking help. When a team member called the number provided, Hind’s 15-year-old cousin, Layan Hamada, the only other survivor in the car, picked up. Layan told them there was an Israeli tank nearby shooting at them. Layan can be heard screaming amid the sound of intense machine gun fire, after which, the call went dead. The rescue team called the phone back, and Hind answered, telling them that Layan had been shot and killed, she had been injured, and everyone in the car was dead. She said she could see the tank and that it was getting closer.

Israel Is Flattening Areas of Gaza City

This has exacerbated what was already a humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, with rampant hunger, mass displacement and a collapse of health care, schools and infrastructure. Many war-weary Gaza City residents say they simply cannot or will not be displaced again, and many have no homes to return to.

While closing in on Gaza City, Israel has used existing buildings as bases, only to later destroy them with explosives before moving onward, according to satellite images and videos verified by NYT.

One video shows the military destroying AlFurqan school in the city, which it had earlier used as a military position.

When you want to build new settlements the best is to flatten the foundation no? I'm surprised they didn't make holes for basements.

Italy sends second warship to protect flotilla – but asks it to surrender its aid to Israel

cross-posted from: hexbear.net/post/6251000

cross-posted from: ibbit.at/post/64652
Italy has despatched a second warship to support the humanitarian Global Sumud Flotilla en route to deliver aid to Gaza and break Israel’s criminal starvation blockade, following continued – now nightly – Israeli attacks on the fleet of volunteer-crewed boats.

But at the same time, the Italian government has tried to pressure the flotilla to capitulate to Israeli demands to surrender its aid supplies – in this case to the local Catholic Church, which Israel will supposedly allow to distribute the aid in Gaza unmolested, despite the occupation’s diversion of aid to the criminal gangs it funds and its near-daily slaughter of desperate Palestinian aid-seekers.

Italy sending more support to the Global Sumud Flotilla – but with demands

The Global Sumud Flotilla consists of around fifty civilian vessels crewed by lawyers, politicians, medics and activists and has been repeatedly bombed by drones and buzzed by fighter aircraft, now with the added psychological warfare of drones playing loud music all night to try to deprive crews of sleep. Despite this one-sided aggression, the Israeli government is claiming that it is the unarmed humanitarian volunteers who are ‘pursuing violence’.

Italy sent a first naval ship earlier this week to ‘assist’ the flotilla after it was bombed by at least fifteen drones in international waters near Greece. Spain followed suit shortly afterward. So far, no crew member has been reported killed or seriously hurt.

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni said the government’s proposal was to hand the aid over in Cyprus to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem for distribution in Gaza, and tried to blame the flotilla organisers for not accepting the ‘offer’.

Israel continues to maintain its vice-like grip on food and other essentials in Gaza while shooting and shelling starving aid-seekers at the ‘GHF’ so-called ‘aid’ stations it controls and funding an ISIS-linked criminal gang to steal aid and kill Palestinian refugees.

The flotilla crews have said they will continue on their mission to deliver the aid directly.

I misread the title as, "Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser to Retire at End of War" and didn't even question it until I clicked on the article.

Microsoft will offer free Windows 10 extended security updates in Europe

Microsoft will provide free Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10 in the European Economic Area through October 13, 2026, but with specific conditions[^1]. While users won't need to enable Windows Backup or use Microsoft Rewards points, they must sign in with a Microsoft Account at least once every 60 days to maintain access to updates[^2].

"If your Microsoft Account is not used to sign in for a period of up to 60 days, ESU updates will be discontinued, and you'll need to re-enroll by signing in using the same MSA," Microsoft confirmed[^3].

This change came after pressure from Euroconsumers, who argued that linking security updates to Microsoft's cloud services raised concerns under the Digital Markets Act[^4]. The free ESU program applies to Windows 10 version 22H2 devices in the EEA (European Union member states plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway)[^5].

Outside the EEA, users still must either enable Windows Backup, redeem Microsoft Rewards points, or pay approximately $30 for ESU access[^2].

How safe is web archive for software?

Ive seen that there are software you can download on web archive (archive.org), but it isnt listed in the megathread.

Should I suppose that it is as safe as it is downloading random stuff from the internet?

Questa voce è stata modificata (1 mese fa)
in reply to Blastboom Strice

Yes, literally anyone can upload stuff to archive.org, so you should assume you're downloading random stuff from an unknown person on the internet and take precautions accordingly. 😀
in reply to Cevilia (she/they/…)

All uploads go through an AV scan, though. But yeah, better be safe than sorry.

in reply to Dialectical Idealist

Managers and executives are critical to the operation of the company though, companies aren't just hollow shells full of workers and machines.
in reply to leafperson [any, any]

You are technically correct, in the literal sense that managers and executives have work to do.

It should be noted, however, that it is the workers (not the company owners/investors) that create all the products that are up for sale and the infrastructure necessary to begin production (e.g., roads, bridges, electricity, education, etc.). Hence, when a CEO say that they "built" the company, they are obfuscating the exploitation of the labor of workers who transform raw materials into all the useful commodities we enjoy.
