President Trump rejecting the annexation of the occupied West Bank is a “very important moment”, says director of Mediation Group International, Martin Griffiths.

Chicago Unions, Community Groups Fight ICE Raids, Nat’l Guard Deployment Threats

CHICAGO, Illinois — On September 16, 2025, Joe Botello, an Elgin, Illinois, man born in the United States, was zip-tied, questioned, and had his front doors shattered by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. He was one of four men shown on a video released by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, who was present at the raid. Botello was let go later after showing proof of citizenship.

“I’m just blessed that I’m still alive,” Botello said. “I’ve been hearing it and seeing it through social media. But it never crossed my mind that it was going to happen here at the house … where I live.”

The raid came amid escalating threats by U.S. president Donald Trump that he would target this city by sending in federal troops to “fight crime.” While troops have not yet been deployed, an immigration crackdown by ICE is already underway. “Operation Midway Blitz” began in early September, mostly in Chicago’s suburbs with large immigrant populations like Elgin.

How do you handle emulator controls when using a controller?

One thing I’ve run into as I’ve been playing some of my retro games is that, when using a controller with an Nvidia Shield + Moonlight or even with just a Steam Deck, the emulators often have a massive amount of controls that I can’t really interact with. All of the controls are hotkey based, for save states, loading states, etc.

Most of the games I’m wanting to play are controller based, but it feels like the tools to enjoy them are all keyboard based. Do you just use the built in save functionalities? How does it all work?

in reply to Elarionus

Steam controller plus 'sc-controller' for linux. It supports other controllers too. There may be an android fork out there.

I also use it for most steam games, as I abhor steam input. I always launch steam with --nojoy.

It's usually possible to bind specific hotkeys to controller buttons within the emulator's settings (I make heavy use of R3 for fast-forward). Take a look at the settings and give it a try.

Washington backing plan for Tony Blair to head transitional Gaza authority

The White House is backing a plan that would see Tony Blair head a temporary administration of the Gaza Strip – initially without the direct involvement of the Palestinian Authority (PA), according to Israeli media reports.

Under the proposal, Blair would lead a body called the Gaza International Transitional Authority (Gita) that would have a mandate to be Gaza’s “supreme political and legal authority” for as long as five years.

But any role for the former Labour leader would inevitably prompt intense controversy. After stepping down as prime minister in 2007, he took on the role of Middle East envoy until 2015 and he enjoys a high standing with many Gulf leaders. But Blair is bitterly resented by many Palestinians – who see him as having impeded their efforts to attain statehood – and more broadly across the region for his role in backing the 2003 US invasion of Iraq.

Any thoughts on using Tessaract for Sopuli?

I stumbled across while trying to mod a community on Lemmy.world and I really like. Slick front-end for Lemmy. I don't fully understand what is needed to get it to work, but it looks like the instance needs to decide to implement it in some way.

Sorting by "Active" shows posts with 0 comments

I would assume that when I choose "Active" as my front page sorting, I would not see so many posts with no comments. What am I not understanding correctly?
in reply to lerba

It organises by when they were last posted in."Active" also counts the initial post as a comment, so new posts are by default "active" until comments from other posts dethrone them.

I agree that "Active" should be reworked into prioritising posts with high comment activities generally though. Like /hot/ but more comment-focused.

in reply to Skavau

Is there any other way to filter out 0-comment posts? I feel there's a lot of mass-posting going on, and I'm more interested in the conversation.
in reply to lerba

Not currently. But I will bring this potential sorting idea to rimu

You can potentially use the "Comments" filter to only show comments

Thailand: Legal Committee Pushes for Immediate Halt to China’s Rare Earth Mining in Myanmar over cross-border pollution

Cross-posted from lemmy.sdf.org/post/43049861

Archived

[...]

[Anuk Pitukthanin, Director of the Mekong Studies Centre] said the rare earth mining issue must be managed beyond local communities and treated as a regional concern.

Kanwee Suebsaeng, list MP for the Fair Party and deputy chair of the House committee [in Tahiland] said the House considered the Clean Air Bill yesterday, 25 September. One section deals with transboundary pollution. He asked the drafters how Thailand could bring civil action against foreign operators whose activities in neighbouring countries harm Thailand.

[...]

Zung Ting from the Kachin environmental network reported that conditions in Myanmar’s Kachin State have worsened over the past decade, and even more since the 2021 coup.

Kachin holds vast resources amid high global demand for rare earths to feed clean energy supply chains and stockpiles in the United States, the European Union and Japan. Mining sites are located in Kachin, with China playing a major role in extracting ore and adding value.

He said China focuses on processing to add value at home, while avoiding mining on its own soil due to severe environmental harm. Chinese policy shifted to limit domestic rare earth mining by Chinese firms, pushing operations into several areas of Myanmar. Activity rose sharply after 2015, then increased again after the 2021 coup.

[...]

The absence of control is alarming. Rare earth mining sites in Kachin have increased by more than 60 percent, with over 5,000 chemical ponds across about 400 mines. Similar mines and ponds have spread to Shan State. The impact falls heavily on local communities and indigenous peoples, with severe flooding every year. More countries are now moving into Myanmar to seek rare earth ores.

[...]

Pollution from these rare earth mines is now affecting Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai and reaches the Mekong. He urged all parties to learn from the disaster in Kachin and prevent further cross-border pollution.

[...]

Assoc Prof Dr Narumon Thabchumpon of the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University, said political debates often get stuck on territorial limits. She proposed the no-harm principle. States must not cause serious harm to other states, and sovereignty comes with responsibility.

She urged ASEAN to table cross-border pollution from rare earth mining at the summit in November under the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution. She also called for talks on environmental and health security under RBC frameworks. Local authorities should be strengthened, with early warning systems and buffer zones put in place.

Chosen community aside, steam controller settings. If you're launching through steam, you should be able to map anything to anything. Make a radial menu with everything you need and map it to something you don't.

Terrorism case against Kneecap rapper Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh thrown out

Ó hAnnaidh had been charged with a terrorism offence for allegedly displaying a Hezbollah flag at a gig at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, north London, last November.

But sitting at Woolwich crown court, the chief magistrate, Paul Goldspring, agreed with Ó hAnnaidh’s defence team, who had argued there was a legal mistake in the way the charge was brought against him.

Ó hAnnaidh told supporters outside the court on Friday: “We will not be silent.” His defence team, led by Brenda Campbell KC, argued that the attorney general, Richard Hermer, had not given permission for the case to be brought against the defendant when police informed him he was to face a terrorism charge on 21 May.

How Trump's new U.S. attorney got Comey indicted — by herself

Trump loyalist Lindsey Halligan found herself going it alone before a grand jury that formally charged the former FBI director on Thursday night.

Lindsey Halligan, the new federal prosecutor hand-picked by Donald Trump to target his longtime foe James Comey, was all alone when she convinced a grand jury on Thursday to indict the former FBI director, according to two people with knowledge of the secret proceedings.

Halligan took over as U.S. attorney for the prestigious Eastern District of Virginia on Monday. Three days later, she found herself the lone representative of a 300-member office spearheading a case that her predecessor — and many of the assistant U.S. attorneys who report to her — considered too weak to bring charges.

Her singular role was extraordinary.

Rarely does a U.S. attorney in a large office lay out the potential charges to a grand jury, much less one three days on the job with no prosecutorial experience and no background working the case.

There are heaps of sacred rocks.

I should have known from the beginning that we(sterners) never intended to force Israel into accepting a two-states implementation.

1000010300

I naively hoped that we wanted to enforce international law along the 1967 borders for a time, but we proved instead that we never intended to in the first place, and probably never will since Israel is an ally.
Yet our people still consider that we did something. The only thing our empty words and lack of plan aimed to do was to appease the global outrage, it worked.

Then, the last available alternative is wars, from the beginning it was always war, since neither the west nor Israel intend to let palestinians have a state. Or submit, or wait a more favorable time.

Let's fantasize that Israel ever wanted a two-states solution, then it could ask for Palestine's demilitarization, collaboration to chase down israelis enemies, a sincere acceptation from the current antizionist states(, including with a clear pro-zionist propaganda in these states), and could take written engagements that it will eternally support the palestinian demands towards euro-americans for a.n just/acceptable territory in exchange for Israel.
Claiming that peace with palestinians is impossible is a lie, they simply don't want to share the sacred lands. Netanyahu is the same as he was when he opposed the Oslo accords, his concerns for security are a pretext for grabbing more lands, and his bad-faith arguments and behavior are proofs of that.

I can only blindly hope that wars aren't the last alternative.
Again, i feel so stupid to have ever believed that we(sterners) intended to force Israel into accepting a two-states implementation, tsk.

Sociala medier underifrån - Workshop mastodon och mobilizon (english if required)
Dom 15:00 - 18:00
underifrån Göteborg

Denna workshop kommer hållas på engelska om någon deltagare önskar det. / This workshop will be held in english if any participant requests so.

OBSERVE: Date might change - check in a couple of days again for a confirmation!

English description:

Are you tired of missing a demonstration because the algorithm only shows you rubbish? Are you worried that the organisations you follow need to censor what they write so that their accounts don't get shut down? Or maybe you refuse to use the big platforms, but find it difficult to know what's going on in town?

Sociala medier underifrån (social media from below) is a Gothenburg-based campaign by a few left-wing and queer organisations that want to help fill alternatives to the networks of the evil tech giants with life. The participating organisations will use the alternatives Mastodon and Mobilizon (which this website is based on), which are non-commercial social networks by and for us. In this workshop, we will talk about why we need these alternatives and show you how to use them in practice! No prior knowledge is required, we will learn step by step together! Feel free to bring a mobile phone or laptop if you can – then you can create an account right away.

We will take plenty of breaks and there will be food and snacks during the workshop. Pre-registration is not required, but it helps us estimate how much fika we need to prepare.

Please feel free to comment here or contact us at info@underifran.se if you have any questions!

I don’t really have an issue with it except that I’d worry about STIs, but I think that’s manageable.

This Week in Plasma: lots and lots of bug-fixing for Plasma 6.5!

Welcome to a new issue of This Week in Plasma!

This week the Plasma team really really really focused on bug fixing and UI polishing, in preparation for the Plasma 6.5 release next month.

So far relatively few regressions have been reported, so either we’ve done a really good job of fixing them or keeping Plasma generally stable, or people aren’t reporting enough bugs!

While I’d love to believe it’s the former, let me take the opportunity to request more bug reports! KDE Linux is a great way to test, and other distros also have their own package repos you can switch to for beta releases. Give it a try! I’d say the Plasma 6.5 beta is really quite good. And as a reminder, here’s what’s in it.

Notable New Features

Plasma 6.5.0

The colorblindness correction filters now feature a grayscale mode you can use to desaturate all the colors on the screen, or remove them entirely! (Leah B. link)

Image 2: Monochrome mode in use, showing the Plasma desktop and System Settings in grayscale Notable UI Improvements

Plasma 6.5.0

On System Settings’ Bluetooth page, the on/off switch now remains where it is after you interact with it. (Berk Elyesa Yıldırım, link)

When setting up a slideshow wallpaper, you can now click on the the entire grid item for each image to toggle it on or off, instead of having to aim for the tiny checkbox in the corner. (David Redondo, link)

Everything that lets you quickly see what’s on the desktop now consistently uses the term “Peek at desktop”. (Nate Graham, link)

When your system is out of inotify watches, and you fix it by clicking on the “fix it” button on the notification alerting you to the issue, the notification now goes away after it’s fixed. (Kai Uwe Broulik, link)

The Show Activity Manager widget now has a sane upper icon size limit, so it’s no longer ridiculously massive on really thick panels. (Niccolò Venerandi, link)

Image 3: Show Activity Manager widget at a reasonable size on a 150px thick bottom panel Modernized the Add Connection dialog on System Settings’ Networks page a bit. (Nate Graham, link)

Image 4: Add Connections dialog looking nice and clean

Plasma 6.6.0

Improved the way cross-app activation happens on Wayland in a variety of ways. (Vlad Zahorodnii, link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4)

Improved the UI of the Colorblindness Correction feature on System Settings’ Accessibility page. (Nate Graham, link)

Image 5: Improved colorblindness correction filter UI System Settings’ Application Permissions page now shows Flatpak apps’ technical ID instead of their version number (because it’s not very useful there), and you can select and copy the text, too. (Nate Graham, link)

Image 6: EasyEffects app on Flatpak Permissions page, with its id “com.github.wwmm.easyeffects” visible Notable Bug Fixes

Plasma 6.4.6

Fixed a bug that could allow apps or websites that send notifications to make Plasma display the contents of file:///dev/urandom or other technical files, which could make the system bog down or crash. (David Edmundson, link)

Fixed a case where System Monitor could crash when you tried to save a customized graph as a new preset. (David Redondo, link)

Fixed two cases where the KMenuEdit app could crash: one when sorting items, and another when given a malformed .desktop file. (Nicolas Fella, link 1 and link 2)

Manually saving your session no longer breaks the Shut Down, Restart, and Log Out buttons in the Kickoff Application Launcher and other similar launcher menus. (David Edmundson, link)

Fixed a recent regression that made some maps apps not appear as options on System Settings’ Default Applications page. (Sune Vuorela, link)

Fixed a bug that broke the mouse button re-binding UI. (David Redondo, link)

Adding or removing images on System Settings’ Wallpapers page now activates the “Apply” button as expected. (Nate Graham, link)

Fixed a bug that made the Expand buttons on System Settings’ Shortcuts page sometimes get pushed partially out of view. (Nate Graham, link)

Plasma 6.5.0

Fixed a case where the session manager could crash when there were multiple logout notifications. (David Edmundson, link)

Certain misbehaving screens no longer trigger an infinite loop of connections and disconnection sounds after they go to sleep. (Akseli Lahtinen, link)

Fixed a bug that could cause RDP clients to show a black screen when connected to Plasma’s build in RDP server. (Jaxk Xu, link)

Fixed a bug that sometimes made it impossible to turn off the screen reader via its Meta+Alt+S keyboard shortcut (Sebastian Sauer, link)

Fixed multiple issues related to dragging widgets and rubberband selection rectangles on the desktop and in standalone Folder View widgets. (Akseli Lahtinen and Marco Martin, link 1 and link 2)

Fixed bug that made press-and-hold with a touchscreen to right-click unreliable on the Kickoff Application Launcher. (Marco Martin, link)

Fixed a few visual glitches in the panel configuration dialog when using the system with a right-to-left language like Arabic or Hebrew. (Niccolò Venerandi, link)

While in Plasma’s edit mode, dragging System Monitor widgets from the desktop to the panel or back no longer forces them into “Text Only” mode. (Marco Martin, link 1 and link 2)

The wallpaper grid now displays the wallpaper previews in the correct alphabetical order based on the visible title you can see. Previously it was sorting based on the filename, not the user-visible title. (David Redondo, link)

The weather widget now shows an apropriate icon for the “Hazy” weather condition from weather stations using the BBC weather provider. (Ismael Asensio, link)

Fixed a bug that could cause the activity and wallpaper switching shortcuts to be mis-named on System Settings’ Shortcuts page. (Nicolas Fella, link 1 and link 2)

Fixed a bug that could sometimes cause some misbehaving apps to end up with no app icon on their windows’ titlebars. (David Redondo, link)

Other bug information of note:

…But this is because we fixed a bunch and then added more as the result of bug triage! A Plasma developer’s work is never done.

Notable in Performance & Technical

Plasma 6.5.0

Dragging widgets on top of other widgets no longer bogs down the system with an amount of lag proportional to the refresh rate of the mouse used to drag it. Now it’s always nice and smooth. (Akseli Lahtinen, link)

I just installed Debian 13 a couple of days ago, and went with KDE Plasma this time. (I've always used Gnome and XFCE before.) So I guess I won't see these updates for a while, but it's great that they're happening. 😁 And I've been loving Plasma so far, too.

Humanoid robots are only hyped because GenAI is hyped and GenAI is hyped because Altman and his other conmen are scamming the World out of resources on the promise of AGI because "Scale Is All You Need", a very convenient trope for VCs as they have no other idea beside dominating a market by scaling.

So... if the GenAI bubble does pop (and the HBR article on workslop lets me hope that it has started) then I don't see how humanoid robot would not. I also imagine manufacturers are less prone to hype because they have been robots already for decades. Even some services like hospitals do have robots for cleaning, delivery, etc. Sure they don't look humanoid but it's still a baseline to compare with in terms of performance and price.

Edit: if you want to explore the OSHW FLOSS side of this check github.com/huggingface/lerobot but my own understanding is that there is no radical progress. Sure we might be inching away at "solving" robotics but nothing changed except few components getting a bit cheaper thanks to smartphone then in turn drone or obviously GPUs.

Edit2: if you don't feel like reading the article just watch the 2 videos by Roland Johansson on normal hand vs hand without touch, it's fascinating.
