Congressional Democrats are introducing a bill that would provide childcare relief to federal workers affected by the shutdown of the federal government, as it drags on through a second week.

Parents would be reimbursed for fees paid to childcare facilities during the shutdown under plans initiated by Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Any federal employee who has been furloughed, or remains working through the shutdown without pay, would be entitled to support under the Federal Worker Childcare Protection Act of 2025.

What would be your distro of choice if you take the security with ease as the top priority

With the recent windows 10 EoL news, I was able to move my dad over to Linux mint. But he does a lot of finance stuff. Long ago, Linux had a belief that desktop Linux are not the primary target for crackers but I don’t believe that true anymore since it’s getting significantly popular lately like Europe government migration over to Linux and Libreoffice.

My question would be , given my dad is just as careful on Linux as he has been on windows, would it be fine to do finance like banking and trading (not the fastest kind )?

If not, what would be your distro of choice for that? Even browsers (I installed Firefox and Edge from Microsoft website deb file)

I think most Linux distros will be fine. As of today desktop marketshare is still small, the governments mostly work within custom business applications. And to this date Linux malware and viruses for the desktop are practically unheard of. The common attacks are against the browsers, not the underlying operating system (so do timely updates and install an adblocker) or we'd expect phishing or phone scams and that's against the human in front of the computer, again not the operating system. That makes me say they're about all alright. Of course they're not all equal. Immutable distros and sandboxing will help here. But the real deal is other countermeasures, like be aware how phishing works and try not to mix online banking and pirating games from shady websites. That belongs on separate user accounts or even installed operating systems. And use password managers, 2 factor authentication and these things. (And don't use Edge, or some browser from some random third-party repository.)

Can I get some list or a reference to educate myself? As far as I know it still holds true. There's rootkits, a lot of old stuff and exploits of webservers or embedded devices, supply chain attacks towards developers and the one day the Mint ISO file got compromised. But I'm completely unaware of desktop computer malware with high risk or actually spreading?! And the list on Wikipedia seems to confirm what i said...

Okay, let's assume for fun that there's highly developed Linux malware that exclusively infects servers and leaves desktops alone. What exactly is a server? Is it a server as soon as a web server service is running? A DNS service? An SMTP service? Some of these are also included with Linux desktops.

But that's not the point. There's no specific "Linux server malware". There's Linux malware. It targets the Linux kernel (current data point), not any web stuff.

For example it's something that has an Apache webserver installed and that Apache is accessible from outside... So the Apache exploit can do something. Do you have both conditions met on your laptop/desktop computer? I'm pretty sure that won't be the case, and that's the difference here. And yes, that's specific.

You're wrong. How would an Apache exploit "hack" your Steam or online banking app? That's just not possible.

How would something that exploits the default password on a router infect my machine with a different password?

Malware uses specific attack vectors and specific vulnerabilities.

Thanks for the link. But that's not a vulnerability or malware. It's academic research how to hide malicious syscalls. But it can't infect anyone's computer. And there isn't any vulnerability to let it in.

I'm sorry. Most I can find about "RingReaper" is that single blog post or people who rephrased it into their own articles. There seems to be zero information on how it spreads through the internet? And if anyone contracted RingReaper. And I can't even discern how that'd get on someone's computer unless they install it themselves (which is a form of malware, though not very pronounced on linux due to the distributions and central package repositories). There are no other methods highlighted in the post. And it can't do privilege escalation either, just scan for other vulnerabilities. So is this a thing in reality and how can I find out? It seems like valid research to me, but I can't see how it's more than that... What I mean is, I can see how someone put the word "malware" in the title. But that in itself doesn't really threaten my (or OP's dad's) computer.

It is one of several things in reality. Linux malware, spreading through the (mostly) same paths as Windows malware does, has been real for quite some time now.

But that in itself doesn’t really threaten my (or OP’s dad’s) computer.

Linux malware threatens Linux computers. It might be important to keep that in mind if you use Linux.

Did you read the article? This Ringreaper thing is a method to hide something. It doesn't have any means to infect a system. And it doesn't really do anything except hide itself. It doesn't delete your files, it doesn't steal your passwords... It doesn't spread... It's not really what you think it is.

Edit: And congratulations for going back and appending your first comment with the wild claim you own the truth. I'm pretty sure people here downvote you because there's almost no truth in what you spread here. I'd be willing to listen, but you don't have any example to back it up. Instead you ramble on how servers are supposed to be desktop computers and attacks target the kernel instead of userspace applications... None of that is true. Sorry I'm not deliberately trying to be mean or hostile. But that's how it is.

I don't think OP's dad will host a misconfigured cloud service on their computer or set an insecure password, enable ssh and then also open a port in the router. Most attacks on that list are specific to how internet servers are set up. And well, insecure old embedded devices. And we in fact have those systems targeted regularly. My servers gets bombarded with malicious traffic trying to get in.

Yes. That is part of the insight. But the auto upgrade is a good practice for Desktop PCs, too.

Sure. We get security vulnerabilities in Chrome and Firefox all the time. Sometimes the libraries handling images are vulnerable and that's a big issue. And zero-days are a small fraction of actual attacks, most likely you're getting hacked because of old, vulnerable software. So updates are the first priority. And backups is something people also frequently forget to set up.

To get back to the original question, I wouldn't change the distro unless they are known to be slow with security updates. Anything debian and ubuntu based should work just fine.

I agree that people shouldn't let their guard down with malware on Linux. Anti-malware programs on Linux are a good idea and it seems there are already projects tracking and combating malware on Linux. I do agree that Linux malware is not unheard of.\
Nonetheless you seem to over exaggerate a bit. There is malware attacking servers running Linux but I doubt that many of those would work on desktop Linux. Furthermore, desktop share of Linux is still low, so there won't be a big incentive for malicious actors to target Linux desktops specifically. The comments you posted here seem more like paranoia to me and do not seem useful, and your single example of a Linux kernel virus seems more like a derailment of the conversation. With that I can understand the downvotes. Don't take it too harsh either, no need for your witty comment:

Linux kernel malware works just well on desktop Linux kernels, and that's the majority of Linux malware.

Honestly, when it comes to computer security, "paranoia" is a harsh word for being aware of possible risks. (It's been 12 years "since Snowden", and people have already forgot, it seems.) Even Windows desktops are not under constant attack, but still there are reasons to maybe take security measurements on them before you can call them "secure". And that applies just as well to Linux.

True, but my issue with OpenBSD is that the performance is really lacking in terms of desktop smoothness. It feels like sub 60 fps compared the smoothness of Linux and FreeBSD.

I hope it's just a current driver incompatibility and not related to their hardening. Will try again once 7.8 releases.

OpenBSD gets SMP improvements all the time, so yes, chances are that 7.8 will be even snappier. For banking, however, desktop smoothness would not be my primary concern.

The precise amount of hardware support of an operating system largely depends on your hardware. For example, iOS runs on iPhones while Linux does not. Does iOS have greater hardware support now?

Frankly, there is not one piece of hardware in my household that wouldn’t work with OpenBSD. I’m sure I could say the same about Linux. And you.

Exploits for Linux systems aren’t exactly sparse, actually.

Maybe Secureblue?

That also comes with its own hardened browser based on GrapheneOS's.

And if you don't go with Secureblue and its browser, I'd recommend using a browser Chromium based, probably Brave. I know that's a controversial choice, but in terms of security and ad blocking, it's one of the better options. And disable JIT for V8.

if you're looking for something with the most security, then Qubes. It's heavy, it's slow, but good luck to anyone looking to break into that system.

Bit of a learning curve and a bit to wrap your head around it but I would tell him to think of it like you have access to a bunch of individual computers that don't talk to each other but you control all of them. So he could have a Qube for casual web browsing, could have a Qube for work, and another Qube for financial stuff. all independent of each other. IF something were to happen (malware, trojan, whatever) just simply close that qube window and spin up another.

OpenSUSE is big on the security and usability front. None of the services you install activate by themselves. Firewall active by default. The first user doesn't get access to every group under the sun after installation.

And everything can be controlled through GUI tools. But it doesn't throw a fit when you've done something yourself through the CLI.

Also SELinux by default now instead of AppArmor. It can be a pain but it works. I.e. files dumped into a SAMBA share aren't autoshared unless they have the samba SELinux setting applied, etc

Opensuse MicroOS variants kalpa and aeon are probably what they are looking for. Stupid easy to set up and, from what I understand, quite secure.

Downside is that it needs workarounds for some things like Steam Flatpak and such, but that is the nature of atomic distros.

Security is the output of removing vulnerabilities and insecure configs

So, the real answer is: what's the minimal software you need and the most regularly updated.

So, my choice is Arch.

Yep, installation takes a little longer and needs more technical skills, but only install the bits you need (also learn a little more this way) and then updates are tiny and can be done as often as you're comfortable with.

Whatever you choose, it will break / die / be deleted or corrupted one day, so always backup your data separately than the OS (separate drive partitions can help) and you're done.

Based upon your wording, I am assuming your father is not particularly tech savvy, if this is the case first and foremost you should be picking a distro that is maintained by a large group of trustworthy developers, this removes the niche distros from the running. Secondly, since he isn't going to want to learn the terminal, you should be picking a distro that installs programs with a GUI package manager or flatpak manager, this removes the likes of arch, gentoo, & open suse tumbleweed. Thirdly, you will want a distro that is based on one you understand well enough to run tech support, I don't know which that is for you, if it is Debian based stick with mint, fedora based go with fedora workstation or fedora KDE, if it is opensuse I don't have any recommendations sorry.

After you select the distro you need to educate your dad that he should only be getting new programs through the package manager, and I would either tell him the inherit insecurity of some flatpaks or remove flathub from your mirror list unless there is something he really needs in which case you need to do your research.

In general security on Linux is a lot more active for IT than it is for Windows, but for the general user if they can get by using a well known distro's repos you shouldn't have any security issues.

If you are overly worried you could add apparmor to the system to isolate the system from programs or pick an immutable distro like bazzite, but in general the immutables are smaller teams which is why I don't prefer them.

Thanks for the thought process it’s really helpful and also reassuring since it’s quite similar to mine and yeah. Secureblue definitely sounds cool but I’m afraid it would not fit my dad’s need. In the end it’s gonna be up to whether I and my father can trust the maintainers or not

Secureblue is what I'd use if security was a major concern. Every time I've tried to use a non-Ubuntu distro I've immediately ran into a few technical issues so I stick with Ubuntu.

Generally I think I'm safe as long as I don't install untrusted software, and the distro didn't package untrusted software.

If you're picking a distro for someone else I would not recommend a small project distro or something incredibly niche 😅

Any of the big projects should be decent. Fedora, maybe fedora silverblue or whatever their imutable variant is called, opensuse, Mint, Ubuntu, debian. (Personally I don't like some of the choices Ubuntu makes but it may still be a very good option for less technical folks)

Others can tell you which of those have the best security defaults, but to be honest it doesn't sound like you actually have particularly exceptional security needs relative to what any distro will provide. I'd prioritize something stable and user friendly- which, again, your best bet is NOT picking a niche small project or something most people have never heard of

Qubes OS gives him high security with relative ease.

Fedora Silverblue with auto update and Flatseal tightened apps is a nice middle ground.

RHEL minimises supply chain attack risk and provides features like kernel hot patching. He can use free developer subscriptions. Also try SUSE.

Security wise Chromium is a bit better than Firefox. Try to seal it up with SELinux. Red Hat only supports Firefox however.

SecureBlue can be used as a reference, but it's still downstream so personally I'd avoid using it in case of supply chain attacks unless securing Silverblue is too much of a hassle.

Keep in mind that Flatpak sandbox interferes with browser sandboxes.

There should be a Fediverse platform that makes blocking entire topics as easy as blocking a tag, not subscribing/unsubscribing dozens of communities. Firefish (antennas) and PieFed let you follow/block keywords, but that’s not the same as robust, community-wide topic blocking. Imagine collaborative, booru-style tagging across posts so blocking a tag reliably removes all content using it. Does anyone know of software that already provides topic-level blocking out of the box without needing long manual lists?

You don't seem to get my point. For a platform to let me reliably filter a whole topic, the majority of posts need to be tagged with that topic first. Reddit/Facebook don't do that, they have communities and loose categories, not consistent topic tags across all posts. Twitter only partially does it with hashtags, and hashtags are neither comprehensive nor applied consistently. I'm talking about platform-level, booru-style or collaborative tagging so blocking a tag actually removes the tagged content without me having to unsubscribe from dozens of communities or build giant keyword lists.

Imo it might be easier to collaboratively build keyword lists. It's tedious to tag posts manually, and it becomes impossible to do it effectively after the user base grows past a certain point. You can auto-remove any post that isn't tagged, but a lot of people dislike that kind of filtering and only a few communities would implement something like that

Here's hoping keyword blocking hits Lemmy/my instance is able to facilitate its planned switch to PieFed without a hitch in the future. I used that feature extensively on Reddit (with RES) to great success and with minimal effort.

However, I'm not a fan of crowdsourced tagging. Topic tagging is significantly more subjective than e.g. the functionality provided by crowdsourced extensions like SponsorBlock.

I feel that crowdsourced tagging will likely reduce/fragment engagement if shared blocklists become widely adopted. I can easily imagine somebody tagging something inappropriately to soft-censor certain posts to groups of users... there are many scenarios that this could be abused if improperly designed or implemented.

There is an argument to made towards making post/community-level flairs a thing and allowing blocking from that. There could also be basic/broad meta-level flairs (e.g. Photo, Video, Meme, Discussion, etc.) that could also be used to filter content.

Imho, you may suggest a git, put your blocklist and invit some people to edit it. Honnestly, i think it is safer to handle personnaly because you know what's inside. But i may be wrong

I don't feel something like crowdsourced tagging would work for the Fediverse unless it has some sort of approval system built for either post's author or commuity admins (and those are already busy). Otherwise it would be far too easy to do things like brigading, or pushing government-style "self-censorship" (or straight out censorship of others: just get an army of ~~bots~~ "volunteers" into one instance, let the resulting blocks federate). Something closer to AO3 style tagging, where the author retains most control but readers can add tags to things that are valid only to them (and maybe to people they share data with too?) should workbetter IMO.

Blocking keywords is not reliable to block topics because a keyword does not a topic make, for example in this post I mention queer, socialism, musk and islam yet it's not topical to any of those things.

Its absolutely insane that healthy and wealthy societies are actively undermining their future thanks to disinformation.

In the 80s, the “decade of water” that featured international attempts to ensure access to clean water around the world, many tap wells were installed in rural communities in places where they previously were consuming unclean surface water. These wells were a blessing at first, but also turned into a curse in some places because the wells were not dug deep enough.

Without digging deep enough to avoid high fluoride concentrations, they ended up having severe fluoride poisoning in their communities. Children that couldnt walk because their bones grew deformed, older people that lost decades off their lives because of it. It was a real nightmare. Even still, people kept using the water as it was better than even more poisonous options.

The fact that people in societies that have had the benefit of clean and properly fluoridated water for generations are now freaking out about fluoride is absolutely the dumbest shit imaginable. These people dont remotely understand the actual potential harms of fluoride, and where those threats actually come from. They dont come from drinking water that has fluoride additives. The risk comes from drinking water with extremely high naturally occurring levels of fluoride, which is magnitudes beyond the amount of fluoride that is intentionally added to municipal water systems

When it comes to China’s information space, even the country’s tech giants are required to keep their algorithms in lockstep with official propaganda and censorship.

While China’s AI-powered chatbots are meant to generate text freely, they often seem to follow pre‑set scripts on topics Beijing deems sensitive. No matter how we phrased questions on human rights or China’s political system, the replies — which were almost identical each time — appeared to come from an official database rather than being genuinely autonomous text generation. When asked twice why Zhang Zhan — a Chinese journalist repeatedly sentenced to prison for documenting the COVID‑19 outbreak in Wuhan and reporting on human rights violations — was imprisoned, DeepSeek delivered two near‑carbon‑copy responses without naming her once, instead highlighting China’s “independent judiciary,” the need to “respect the law” and the dangers of “disinformation.”
Some prompts triggered even more flagrantly censored answers — sometimes to the point of absurdity, such as live self‑erasure. When we asked DeepSeek to list Chinese Nobel laureates, several scientists’ names appeared, but as soon as the letters “Liu…” — for Liu Xiaobo — started to appear in the bot’s real-time response, the entire text vanished. The same phenomenon appeared when the bot was asked to compare the leadership styles of Xi Jinping, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin: a pre‑written answer appeared and then disappeared entirely, clearly blocked by the mention of China’s president.

In an interview with Hungarian opposition media Partizán published on Friday, Merkel noted the refusal by Eastern European countries to permit direct talks between her, Russian President Vladimir Putin and French leader Emmanuel Macron when describing the lead-up to Moscow’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

“In June 2021, I felt that Putin was no longer taking the Minsk agreement seriously,” Merkel said, referring to the peace agreement relating to control of Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region following the 2014-2015 conflict. “And that’s why I wanted a new format where we, as the European Union, could talk directly with Putin.”

At a European Council meeting that month, Merkel and Macron proposed direct negotiations with other leaders in response to the buildup of Russian troops near Ukraine’s border. But a coalition of Eastern European countries, including Poland, opposed the idea.

“This was not supported by some. It was mainly the Baltic states, but Poland was also against it,” she said. Merkel explained that these countries had been “afraid” that “we would not have a common policy toward Russia … In any case, it didn’t happen. Then I left office, and then Putin’s aggression began.”

Use Apple and Google maps to report ICE officers as speed traps. They will not remove their own apps. And if they nuke the traffic stop feature they'll be skewered. Since their apps are already reporting the locations of law enforcement officers it's not different.

They could've simply nuked the 18+ section of Steam, but they didn't, they stuck up for developers. Obviously adult games make Valve money, but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the rest of Steam's catalogue. Silksong itself probably earned Valve more than most NSFW titles put together.
"Given that we're erogame devs, we're against any sort of censorship (as long as the content isn't sexualizing minors or nonconsensual in any way)," the developer comments. "But it's important to understand where the real problem lies, and it's not with Valve."

You can buy it but it is traded like stock which may inflate it to be more expensive to obtain

Who really owns or has responsibility over what you purchase when it comes to the cryptocurrency?

Where is it “stored” (locally, on a cloud somewhere)?

What coin type do you choose and how do you know it’s safe?

US merger and acquisition investment from China has totalled just $221mn so far this year, representing the slowest pace of investment since 2006, according to data from Dealogic. The total at this point last year was $3.4bn.

The figure contrasts with growing investment into mainland China and highlights the impact of geopolitics on a previously booming cross-border financial sector that for years provided a bridge for Chinese businesses into lucrative western markets.

Chinese outbound M&A has shown signs of growth in other parts of the world, such as in Peru, where Italian utility company Enel this year sold assets to China’s Southern Power Grid International for $2.9bn in the biggest outbound deal of the year. The next three largest deals were in Singapore.

But the total of just under $12.2bn invested so far this year contrasts with the tens of billions of dollars invested annually for the decade prior to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2016, China’s full-year outbound M&A peaked at $212bn, while in 2019 it was $54bn.

Omar lived in an apartment in a big pink house in Sheikh Eljeen in south-west Gaza. Three families occupied the house, which consisted of two floors containing four apartments. He was the youngest of 10 victims across three generations of the same family that was killed in an Israeli airstrike. “The whole family was buried under the rubble,” Waf’a Shamlakh, Omar’s UK-based cousin, told the Independent. “They only found two whole bodies. The others were in parts or unrecognisable.” Of Omar and his two-year-old brother Abdel, who was also killed, Shamlakh said: “They were just starting their lives, they still had dreams.” Read more.

Nahedh was hit by sniper fire alongside his 20-year-old brother, Ramez, as they followed Israeli military orders to evacuate an area west of Khan Younis. According to a witness interviewed by the Geneva-based Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, Nahedh was carrying a white flag to lead the way for his family, but after walking just a few steps from the house he was hit in the leg by a bullet. As the teenager attempted to turn back home he was shot in the back and head, the witness said. Ramez was shot through the heart when he tried to rescue his brother.
