Hundreds of thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators took to the streets of central London on Saturday, calling for lasting peace in Gaza, a day after the ceasefire took effect.

According Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC), which organised the demonstrations against Israel’s genocide in Gaza, more than 600,000 people joined the march.

PSC director Ben Jamal said that the plan put forward by US President Donald Trump was “not a plan for enduring peace”, adding that it fails to address “the root cause of violence”.

In destroying Gaza, Israel destroyed its own image as a moral enterprise

Hamas’s own assessment of the battle damage is that its institutional integrity, command and control, and communications have all withstood the severest of tests, including assassinations of top leaders, along with the several Hiroshimas’ worth of high-powered explosives that Israel has dropped on Gaza.

It has as many fighters as it did at the start of the war, and can draw upon a virtually unlimited amount of small arms and explosives to fashion anti-tank rockets and improvised explosive devices.

Hamas, which is designated as a terrorist group in the UK and other countries, does not regard itself as a defeated force - still less one that is now obliged to bend to Israel’s military will. The same is true for the other fighting factions in Gaza.

in reply to Peter Link

It was never moral. From day 1 it was people who'd never lived there. Who had no actual claim to the land. Running people from their family lands and homes. Making them second class citizens at best in their own homes.

And to be clear. There were Jews living peacefully in Palestine before the Zionists came.

in reply to Eldritch

This is a proof that palestinians and arab had no problem with the jews that came to the land dimply to live and integrate with them

In 1884 the first Yemenites settled in Silwan and for 45 years lived peacefully and in very good terms with their Arab neighbors. It seemed that the people of Silwan, which was known to be a poor village, found common ground with the poor Jewish Yemenites that lived among them.

Despite the attempt to depict the 1929 Arab Riot as a violent incident against the Jews in Silwan, it is clear that it was not the case. From a letter of gratitude that the Yemenite Jews sent to their Arab neighbors, we can learn about the devotion and benevolence that the Arabs have shown towards the Yemenites by undauntedly protecting them, and also about the amity and good neighborly relations that prevailed between the two communities.

ISPs created so many fees that FCC will kill requirement to list them all

cross-posted from: discuss.online/post/28602691

The rule took effect in April 2024 after the FCC rejected ISPs' complaints that listing every fee they created would be too difficult. The rule applies specifically to recurring monthly fees "that providers impose at their discretion, i.e., charges not mandated by a government."

ISPs could comply with the rule either by listing the fees or by dropping the fees altogether and, if they choose, raising their overall prices by a corresponding amount. But the latter option wouldn't fit with the strategy of enticing customers with a low advertised price and hitting them with the real price on their monthly bills. The broadband price label rules were created to stop ISPs from advertising misleadingly low prices.

This title is something that doesn't make sense said in a way that makes it look logical. If they can't manage their fees those fees shouldn't exist. But that's not really why this requirement it's going away, it's because they were bribed.

VPN Comparison

After making a post about comparing VPN providers, I received a lot of requested feedback. I've implemented most of the ideas I received.

Providers

Notes

  • I'm human. I make mistakes. I made multiple mistakes in my last post, and there may be some here. I've tried my best.
  • Pricing is sometimes weird. For example, a 1 year plan for Private Internet Access is 37.19€ first year and then auto-renews annually at 46.73€. By the way, they misspelled "annually". AirVPN has a 3 day pricing plan. For the instances when pricing is weird, I did what I felt was best on a case-by-case basis.
  • Tor is not a VPN, but there are multiple apps that allow you to use it like a VPN. They've released an official Tor VPN app for Android, and there is a verified Flatpak called Carburetor which you can use to use Tor like a VPN on secureblue (Linux). It's not unreasonable to add this to the list.
  • Some projects use different licenses for different platforms. For example, NordVPN has an open source Linux client. However, to call NordVPN open source would be like calling a meat sandwich vegan because the bread is vegan.
  • The age of a VPN isn't a good indicator of how secure it is. There could be a trustworthy VPN that's been around for 10 years but uses insecure, outdated code, and a new VPN that's been around for 10 days but uses up-to-date, modern code.
  • Some VPNs, like Surfshark VPN, operate in multiple countries. Legality may vary.
  • All of the VPNs claim a "no log" policy, but there's some I trust more than others to actually uphold that.
  • Tor is special in the port forwarding category, because it depends on what you're using port forwarding for. In some cases, Tor doesn't need port forwarding.
  • Tor technically doesn't have a WireGuard profile, but you could (probably?) create one.

Takeaways

  • If you don't mind the speed cost, Tor is a really good option to protect your IP address.
  • If you're on a budget, NymVPN, Private Internet Access, and Surfshark VPN are generally the cheapest. If you're paying month-by-month, Mullvad VPN still can't be beat.
  • If you want VPNs that go out of their way to collect as little information as possible, IVPN, Mullvad VPN, and NymVPN don't require any personal information to use. And Tor, of course.

Just wanted to leave a comment to say thank you for sharing your findings and taking the time to write your post here. I am sure you spent a lot of time and effort researching all of this. These kinds of posts are why I love Lemmy and its communities.

Not currently in need of a new VPN, pretty happy with Proton and my plan is active for another 1.5 years. But I still wanted to say I appreciate your post.

in reply to FenrirIII

Thanks for this, looks like it took a long time to put together!

Some corrections with Windscribe since I use it: on Android you can get the APK directly ("sideload" - I use Obtanium) or through F-Droid. Also I think that pricing is for the full service. I pay like $3 a month with 30GB data and a choice of (I think) 3 or 4 countries IIRC. This has been more than enough for me and probably most people.

OpenAI allegedly sent police to an AI regulation advocate’s door

OpenAI is led by a mendacious, manipulative asshole purporting to be something he is not.

His own board tried to oust him for this reason.

Podcasters in the know allude to the fact that he says things publicly he doesn’t believe, and actually thinks some pretty heinous things about the future of AI.

Tactics like these are further evidence that they know just how bad AI could be for humanity, but they want the most profit they can extract from it before they run off to their doomsday bunkers.

When you see Sam Altman talking, just know he’s not revealing his true thoughts.

in reply to blarth

Every social media CEO and AI CEO is a complete waste of sperm and acts, talks like, and for all intents and purposes, are nothing more than highly sophisticated LLMs designed to manipulate and extract profit from human beings

I'm out of the loop... what's stopping them right now?

in reply to xthexder

There is currently a temporary ceasefire deal for captive exchange in Gaza with Israel. Which will last 72 hours for now.

That said, Israel also has a ceasefire agreement with Lebanon which we can see they are not holding up.

in reply to IndustryStandard

Ah okay, so not really anything other than their word then... I was kinda hoping there was more to it, but I guess we can hope this ceasefire lasts.
in reply to xthexder

Indeed. But all we have to go on is Trump assuring Hamas that Israel will accept a permanent ceasefire in exchange after the captive exchange. However both Israel and Trump do not have a very strong track record in keeping their promises so people are rather pessimistic about this only being a temporary genocide pause.

In southern Lebanon, Israeli forces may no longer occupy towns on foot—but for residents, the war continues overhead and from the nearby hilltops.

Daily drone patrols hover above villages, launching strikes with no warning. Snipers stationed on Israeli-held hilltops train their sights on roads, rooftops and fields.

In September, an Israeli drone strike in Bint Jbeil killed five civilians, including three children. The victims were traveling by car through a residential neighborhood when the missile hit.

Tony Blair met Jeffrey Epstein in No 10, documents reveal

Sir Tony Blair met Jeffrey Epstein in Downing Street while he was prime minister after a recommendation by Peter Mandelson, newly released papers from the National Archives show.

Epstein visited Blair on 14 May 2002, after the suggestion by Lord Mandelson to the prime minister’s then chief of staff, Jonathan Powell. Mandelson was sacked as US ambassador in September after new information emerged about how close he was to the convicted sex offender.

At the time of the recommendation, Mandelson was a backbench Labour MP but still served as a trusted ally to Blair. Just over a year earlier he had resigned from government a second time amid controversy. He had described Epstein to Powell as “safe” and a “friend” in an email before the meeting. Powell is now Keir Starmer’s national security adviser. His role has been questioned in the collapse of a Chinese spying case.

GAZA CITY—Nizar Daghmash, the 56-year-old head of the Daghmash family council, stood in front of the ruins of his family home in Gaza City on Friday after making the journey back to the north following a ceasefire that went to effect earlier that day at 12 p.m. His house was still standing but only barely—more of a broken concrete shell surrounded by rubble.

“As you can see, the scene speaks for itself,” Daghmash told Drop Site. “The stone, as a stone, has no material value to us. But the emotional value—these stones, we placed them one by one, me, my father, my brothers, and my sisters. A flood of memories runs through my mind now—not about the stones or the house itself, but because this house represents our history.”

Tens of thousands of displaced Palestinians returned to the north on Friday, making their way along Al-Rashid road. Like Daghmash, many had fled Gaza City following Israel’s brutal military offensive on the city that began in mid-August in a stated campaign of ethnic cleansing. They returned to find many of their neighborhoods unrecognizable.

Israel blocks release of two prominent Palestinian doctors as part of Gaza ceasefire

A Hamas official told CNN on Friday that “the occupation refused to release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya,” who was kidnapped during an Israeli raid that closed the last major functioning health facility in northern Gaza in December 2024. Abu Safiya served as the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza. Dr. Marwan al-Hams, director of field hospitals in Gaza, was also excluded from the deal, the official said.

According to Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), Dr. Abu Safiya has faced starvation, physical abuse, and invasive searches while in detention. The group said he has not been charged, interrogated, or brought before a judge since March.

Last month, Abu Safiya’s attorney Ghaid Qasem told Palestinian media that the doctor was being “abandoned to disease and hunger” in Israel’s detention center, Sde Teiman, which is known for brutality and torture.

Israel will not release Dr Hussam Abu Safiya as part of Gaza deal

Israel has said it will not release two Palestinian doctors, including paediatrician Hussam Abu Safiya, as part of the ceasefire deal, a Hamas official told CNN.

Safiya was beaten and kidnapped by Israeli forces in Gaza during a raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital in December last year after he refused to abandon patients under siege.

Footage in the aftermath of the attack showed Safiya wearing a white medical overcoat crossing a street strewn with rubble. Safiya has been held since then without charge.

The ceasefire in Gaza went into effect at 12 p.m. on Friday following the announcement of an agreement by Palestinian factions on Wednesday evening and the Israeli cabinet approving the deal on Thursday night. The bombs have stopped and Israeli troops have withdrawn to the agreed upon lines, retaining control of 53% of Gaza. Tens of thousands of Palestinians returned to the north today, making their way along the coastal Al-Rashid road. The exchange of Israeli and Palestinian captives is expected on Monday or—according to President Donald Trump—possibly Tuesday.

While many Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating the deal, the elation is also tempered by fear that Israel will restart the genocide whenever it wants.

Drop Site contacted five Palestinian journalists—four in Gaza and one in exile—to get their reactions to the news. Their responses were submitted on Thursday.

Both lines summarize panspermia, biosignatures, and near‑term missions spanning exoplanets and icy moons to align snippet text with page content focus. Including mission names helps relevance for astronomy readers and reflects current program timelines referenced in the source material.
