China is beating the US in battle for energy export dominance
This is a continuation of a trend. The US hit a record in oil exports in 2024, according to the Energy Information Administration. Yet, China’s clean technology exports were US$30 billion higher.“Clean energy exports are hardware, which once a country has bought it, will generate electricity for a decade or two to come,” said Mr Greg Jackson, chief executive of Octopus Energy, the UK’s largest energy retailer. “Whereas with gas, the day you buy it, you use it, it’s gone forever.”

France: Gisele Pelicot to face court again due to appeal
The rape trial that shocked the world will be discussed in a French court once again, after one of the men convicted of raping Gisele Pelicot appealed, insisting that he is "not a rapist."
One of the men found guilty of sexually abusing Gisele Pelicot is set to appear in court in the southern French city of Nimes.
Husamettin D. was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape. He claims that Pelicot's then-husband, Dominique, led him to believe that she had consented.
The 44-year-old argues he is innocent, with his legal team appealing both his conviction and the sentence. He visited the Pelicot home once in 2019.
He is one of 17 men who appealed their conviction and the last one still maintaining his innocence.
In total, 51 men were convicted in the trial that sent waves all around the world.
Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in jail for drugging his wife and recruiting dozens of strangers to abuse her over almost a decade.

Whether one is "identifying" as a criminal, has ZERO bearing on whether one has committed criminal action!
Dear Gisele Pelicot, please hold your ground, for the sake of all the women who've been subjected to same-category violations.
For yourself AND others, together..
No matter what support you need to be able to withstand it, instead of just dropping it all
( I've survived enough in this world to KNOW that often it makes more emotional sense to drop everything & let evil win .. for one's self .. but then it grows more-powerful .. ),
PLEASE TELL THE GOOD-FOR-YOU PEOPLE WHAT SUPPORT YOU NEED: ASK THEM, .. TELL THEM, .. BEG THEM, .. MAKE THEM,
BUT GET THE SUPPORT YOU NEED, to be able to endure standing against evil's machiavellianism, please.
The more ground they gain, the more ground they can gain:
it's non-linear, & it is a feedback-loop ( same as ClimatePunctuation is, same as ideology-highjacking-a-country is ).
The less ground the machiavellians/gaslighters gain, the more ground that abused-women have.
Please keep holding-up, for the sake of many women in the world.
And anyone who honestly can support her, please please do-so.
It's the same at all scales:
the individual-scale, the whole-country scale ( like Palestine & Ukraine & Sudan & the Congo region ),
continental-scale ( as it will be shortly, in the Americas, & in Europe, & in Asia, & in the Middle-East+Africa, once the tipping-point is crossed, possibly in late 2025 ),
& global ( as it will be, once the "conquering" of regions is done, & the 4 remaining factions of the world have nowhere left to go, except through each-other, in the early 2030's ).
Keep unbreaking, keep getting-up again, keep keeping-going, keep warring for uprightness.
( I feel like shit telling you this, because while I've unbroken my life enough to no-longer be much-of-the-time-catatonic-with-brain-injury ( I spent years that way ), that the psychiatric-profession gaslit me to accept was somehow "incurable mental-illness" instead of literal-brain-decimation..
I've only been able to put me together-enough to offer perspective for help, .. but not been able to uncripple/unbreak my life, yet.
I can't even reliably coordinate physically, yet.
But there's no honest or strategic alternative:
IF I just smash/destroy my life, to escape the endless-abuse of existing-in-it,
THEN abuse won,
& my karma becomes hell-karma, because I let the enemy win, so therefore my continuum/soul gets caught-in lives rigged right from the beginning to that enemy-victory-leverage, to cause my continuum/soul to understand consequences-of-its-choices..
MY soul chose to indulge in being karma's punching-bag, because it didn't understand that consequences are real.
IT assumed that it could make-believe away everything, or ignore-away everything: inexperience/ignorance is terrible management substitute-for-competence, right?
& I've been paying the price for it, for more than 1/2 of a century ( including 7+y of outright homelessness ).
& .. looking around this world .. my experience isn't significantly better, or worse, than global-average, is it?
ALL these continuums/souls are getting themselves caught in incarnations, while making-believing that "consequences aren't real: they can't hurt me-the-soul" .. but the consequences crush/destroy the someones, the lives, that unconscious-souls get caught in..
It isn't the SurfaceMinds ( minds which dissipate every few hours ) which are the problem.
The 2 minds underlying SurfaceMind are the problem: unconscious-LifeMind ( begins forming in conception, & shatters in death ), & underlying-that is unconscious-Continuum/Soul.
Trying to make one's unconscious-LifeMind notice/learn anything .. is like being made of blown-dust & trying to MAKE bedrock understand something it WON'T know or understand..
Years/decades of persistence in right-direction can make some learning happen, in the more-fundamental-layer-of-mind.
But nothing less than that works.
Certainly not the making-believing or pretence pushed by our culture of "entertainment" brainwashing..
All this extra-context is simply to try to communicate that *the problem isn't you, or me, or any-particular-individual,
.. it is unconscious-LifeMind, and it is humankind's-collective-unconscious-LifeMind-ignorance, which is indellible-at-individual-human-scale* and digging-in against that is the REAL context, see?
And THAT is why I'm asking you to intentionally ask & get all the real support you need.
In my life nobody can provide the support that I need:
prejudices has annihilated those bridges: there's no human-closeness left, no such category of trust, of that kind: I do it alone or die having failed to do it.
I'm hoping that your-life is sooo utterly-different from mine, in nature, that it is possible for you to have close human friendship, honest-human-trust, & honest total support, & that you can have it, & can lean on it.
( IF I succeed in breaking-through, THEN it'll have been worth it, though "me"-personality will have been annihilated forever: the continuum/soul currently caught in "me" will have become incapable of ever making such a mistake, EVER again: the soul will have outgrown its retardedness. )
I'm hoping that you succeed, with whatever help you need, in breaking the evil trying to blot-out your truth..
Each their own path, their own way, but the fundamental-enemy's the same: evil's evil.
Narcissism / machiavellianism / sociopathy-psychopathy / nihilism / sadism / systemic-dishonesty / displacing-objectivity / displacing-considered-reasoning..
Each of those dimensions of human-evil has to be recognized on its own, & it has to be countered, outright, its most-effective-way.
Many times we are subjugated-by-evil because we fail to understand that we're caught in "The 2-Problem Problem":
.. that there are actually more than 1 dimensions of "problem" that we're caught-in, & we're trying to solve "the" problem, which is why we're failing again & again & again..
When something won't fix, then it's a good time to step back & see if one has been caught in The 2-Problem Problem..
If that set-of-dimensions-of-human-evil helps you clarify what each of the players concerting evil against your life is meaning, then you can clarify your fight's requirements, thereby stacking-odds for your validity's ( & meaning's ) survival.
That's leverage.
I hope it helps you enough.
I'm sorry I couldn't offer more than mere perspective: it's the only thing I've got. )
Salut, Namaste, Kaizen, & Gratitude for your holding-up as you already have,

Why do people keep thinking that billionaires have our best interests at heart?
There are some nice low-end millionaires. There are no nice billionaires. Plain and simple. You don't become a billionaire by being nice and playing nicely.
Billionaires do not want to get into politics for the good of the people or the world. Ever. Full stop.
It's the thinking part that's left out.
People are easily swayed by implanting feelings in them over media that are buyable.
Could have been worse, he's not outright fascist; the SPD (far-right) and STAČILO! (tankies) movements want to leave NATO and EU. Like last time, the tankies did not make it into Parliament but the far-right is sizeable (16). Still, it will not be enough for majority (101) with Babiš (80), they will also need to appease Motorists (13). So I guess we'll have lots of populism, corruption, continued coal mining and stalling public transit investments.
The previous cabinet (center-right SPOLU that's similar to US Democrats, plus Pirates and Mayors) only has 92 in total now because they inherited an economic crisis in 2021 after Babiš's irresponsible pandemic response (they handled it well but failed to connect with people, and they kept supporting Israel). Does this remind you of a certain American country? At least they managed to get some things done on issues I care about (no more forced castration for legal sex change, investment into 21ˢᵗ century rail infrastracture) and budgeted responsibly.

When my partner "came out" to me, they didn't really do much of anything to follow through and begin making changes. I think because there's so much to do and no guide to do it.
So one day we were at a loose end I said "let's just goto the hair dresser and you can ask them for an appropriate haircut"
And so our very lovely hairdresser became the 2nd person to learn their real name and did a fantastic job sorting out an appropriate hairstyle. Something that is still important to my partner now.
From being the first person they told about their transition IRL, to all the little times I've nudged and supported them taking the next step, it's been a joy and privilege to do that. I feel blessed by their trust and by being close to such beautiful change towards authenticity.

He is expected to join the ranks of Viktor Orbán of Hungary and Robert Fico of Slovakia, whose countries have refused to provide military aid to Ukraine, continue to import Russian oil and oppose sanctions on Russia.

Honestly, no - not in a direct fight. The wolves will eat whole-hog anyone with actual concern for other people. The quickest & most effective way to win against them, IMHO, is to let them have the power they want over their own base, and let that base see for themselves how the right feasts upon others indiscriminately - including upon on its own. Get out of the way as much as you can, and watch them self-destruct.
Unfortunately,, there'll be a fuck-ton of damage left behind in their wake, but that's gonna happen anyway. The only way to minimize that is to take their bait, and flight what they're doing. That's going to drag things out much longer, and only has a moderate chance of avoiding the significant damage anyway.
Yeah, I'm cynical AF, but can you really blame me?

Really good graphic novel. "High Crimes" A disgraced Olympic athlete recovers corpses from Everest. For $50,000 she'll bring the remains down for a proper burial.
Another off topic Everest movie recommendation - The Summit of the Gods.
It's a phenomenal movie, go watch it!
Synopsis shamelessly stolen from ScreenRant: The Summit of the Gods follows a photojournalist’s relentless pursuit of the truth surrounding the first expedition to Mount Everest. His investigation leads him to seek out a revered climber who vanished during the journey, uncovering mysteries within the perilous world of high-altitude mountaineering.
Let's just wander mindlessly off topic.
One of the climbers died making this movie. The director wanted to stop shooting, but other climbers convinced him to keep going, because otherwise the one who died would have died for nothing.
I'm much more impressed by the person who has a job and runs a marathon in their hometown then I am by the rich folks who buy their way to the top of the world.
Back in 2002, Charles Lindbergh's grandson flew across the Atlantic solo. He did a comparison of all the things his small plane had that the Spirit of St. Louis lacked. Autopilot, radar, GPS, full radio communication with the ground. The climbers today are just folks who are in good shape and have money to burn.
I agree though I'm gonna level with you - to me, a lot of people who climb Everest are like a lot of marathon runners, only with too much money to burn: they're in it for the kudos and social media points.
I get people's need for external validation, that's just a human thing. Having said that, the big difference is in the environmental destruction, human exploitation and waste of resources involved in climbing Everest and rescuing people.

Inside China’s gigantic iPhone factory: long hours, discrimination and pay delays
Cross-posted from: lemmy.sdf.org/post/43530586
ArchivedChinese factory staff assembling Apple’s latest iPhone continue to face precarious conditions, working many hours of overtime, suffering wage delays and discrimination against ethnic minorities, according to a leading labour rights group.
China Labor Watch (CLW) found that more than half of the estimated 200,000 workers employed during peak season at the world’s largest iPhone factory run by Foxconn in Zhengzhou are seasonal staff known as “dispatch workers”. This is despite a Chinese law capping the use of such staff at 10 per cent of a company’s workforce.
US-based CLW, which specialises in undercover investigations of Chinese factories, also found that dispatch workers faced staggered payment schedules that withhold part of their wages to deter them from quitting during peak production.
These staff were not entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees, such as paid sick leave, paid holiday and social insurance that includes medical coverage and pension contributions. CLW also claimed that there is systematic discrimination in hiring certain ethnic minorities and pregnant women.
[...]
"Despite Apple’s repeated pledges to improve conditions over the past decade, our investigation finds that core labour issues remain,” said Li Qiang, founder of CLW and author of the report released on Thursday.
"Apple’s supply chain continues to depend on a vast, disposable workforce.”
[...]
Many of the workers interviewed added that conditions compared favourably with those of other local manufacturers, citing air conditioning, hot water, recreational facilities and canteen subsidies.
An economic downturn in China and rising youth unemployment have narrowed options for jobseekers. A 23-year-old who trained as a Chinese teacher said she had worked at Foxconn for two months: “If I can’t find another job, I might come back.”
But two of the people who spoke said Foxconn’s recruitment platform, which the agencies use to upload CVs, rejects applications from ethnic minorities, including Uyghurs, Tibetans, and Huis, who are not local to Henan.
[...]
One worker who had been at the plant for more than a month said that she typically worked two and a half hours of overtime each day, six or seven days a week. “Some managers have bad attitudes,” she said. “We work hard, but they keep pushing and squeezing us.”

companiesmarketcap.com/apple/o…
That means that on average, for any product sold $1000, they make $300.
Apple also hates open source software. They use their proprietary operating system to jail users. They force developers to pay huge fees. This is total abuse. Imagine if Microsoft suddenly banned Windows users from installing software outside Microsoft. Imagine if Microsoft required developers to pay them 20% on all software sales
FUCK APPLE
Apple (AAPL) - Operating Margin
Current and historical Operating Margin charts for Apple (AAPL).companiesmarketcap.com
Maybe 20 years ago, but that hasn't been the case for awhile now. There's a reason textile manufacturing moved most of their operations to countries like Bangladesh where you can shove 1000 workers and 1000 sewing machines into an un-airconditioned building, and then skip town instead of paying your workers.
Manufacturing stays here because while unskilled labor is only very cheap instead of dirt cheap, China has cheaper inputs like electricity, materials, machinery, skilled labor, and access to the Chinese market.
Of course they still have a long way to go, but a median wage of 124K RMB (17K USD) isn't terrible when you can get a good meal for 10 RMB and rent a 2bd in most cities that aren't Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo.
The report is about much more than 'only' the pay, but as you mention it: We must distinguish per capita disposable income from GDP per capita. GDP per capita calculates the total value of all goods and services produced in a country divided by the population, which doesn't reflect the income available to individual citizens and households.
For this reason we must look at the disposable income per capita, which measures the amount of money people can actually use, and we see a completely different picture.
In 2024, China’s national per capita disposable income reached RMB 41,314 (US$5,800 at the current rate), according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. Income disparities between urban and rural areas remain significant as already mentioned.
If it's true that you can "rent a 2bd in most cities that aren’t Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo", you'd spend half of your disposable income on the rent (except in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where you spend considerably more).
It is noteworthy that this data comes from official Chinese sources.
But again, the linked report clearly suggests that workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, are work overly long hours, and things like these. It's a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.
Median and average is not the same, the comparison doesn't make sense as you say yourself.
And it has nothing to do with the linked report. This is not only about pay. It's is essentially about poor workers' rights in China.
These are measures. What I 'think' they are is simply irrelevant.
But I think the linked report has nothing to do with this. It clearly suggests that Chinese workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, work overly long hours, and things like that. It’s a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.
I get 404 not found at that link.
That would be a HUGE median income jump. Which is sure is true although I'm very skeptical that the CCP is actually giving the real number instead of an inflated number (granted, the #s 10 years ago were probably similarly inflated so the increase % is probably close)

There have been more than 300 deaths on Earth's tallest mountain — and the bodies on Mount Everest serve as a grisly reminder for those who follow.Katie Serena (All That's Interesting)
What the fuck is one climber doing on Mt. Everest?
Your chances of dying are much higher than making it to the summit. It's only a mountain; what's the big deal anyway? There are much safer ways to get exercise and fulfillment; stay on level ground and live.
Why yeeeeesssssss, I haaaaaaaave. Remind me how that matters at all, considering we are talking about the specific selection that is being made? Here, since I was already using wikipedia as a source:
Selection bias is the bias introduced by the selection of individuals, groups, or data for analysis in such a way that the association between exposure and outcome among those selected for analysis differs from the association among those eligible`
Note that selection bias is when you are sampling. We're not talking about a sample here, we're talking about the entire population. In statistics, we call that a parameter. It's generally rare that you can accurately determine a parameter, but since the amount of people who have tried to summit everest is so small, and records have been pretty good (aye, we're certainly missing a few), that 400/13000 number is pretty damn close.
Every last CEO, internet influencer and wealthy investor in the world has "climbing Everest" on their bucket list to validate their identities and they want all their employees to see the pictures of them spending absurd amounts of money to climb a mountain and a see a view almost as high as a passenger airliner.
I've said for a while that Nepal and China will have to do something drastic soon.
The deaths and trash and bodies are piling up, and eventually it's going to make the entire "adventure" so repulsive that people are going to stop spending tens of thousands to go try to climb a rock.
Either they're going to radically restrict access to the mountain, or if they really want to keep the tourism money coming, they will have to consider developing the region. Concrete and asphalt basecamp with roads to nearby cities, facilities and helipads and a reinforced complex of resorts and hotels designed to withstand storms and with oxygen bars on every level. Stairs and guardrails all the way up to the summit and drone-patrols watching for people passing out.

The public records request filed by Mikkelsen and his lawyer also alleged that Mikkelsen was detained for 18 hours, during which his repeated requests to contact the Norwegian consulate were denied in violation of diplomatic conventions. Mikkelsen also claimed he was threatened with imprisonment and fines if he did not turn over passwords to his device or sign certain documents.Mikkelsen had planned a months-long trip to the US to visit friends and tour national parks with his mother, he told Hyperallergic in an interview after he returned to Norway in June. However, while passing through passport control at Newark, he was summoned into a room where he said ICE agents asked him if he planned to commit terrorism, belonged to any extremist groups, or was smuggling narcotics.
CBP officers then inspected Mikkelsen’s phone, according to his account of the events, where they found the viral meme of a bald JD Vance and photos of a pipe he said he made in trade school. Publicly, the DHS has stated that Mikkelsen was denied entry because he admitted to using marijuana, which he acknowledges having done twice in places where the substance is legal.
However, DHS’s public narrative does not match what Mikkelsen claims officers told him in the interrogation room, nor does it match documents from CBP reviewed by Hyperallergic.
Officers handed Mikkelsen a document known as an I-877, which is an official sworn report provided by DHS in instances where an individual is denied entry into the US. Mikkelsen’s I-877 states that he was denied entry because he appeared to be seeking illegal employment, which he denies.
Mikkelsen told Hyperallergic that during his interview, however, he remembers that he was told the JD Vance meme was “illegal” and “dangerous.”
Mikkelsen requested a copy of his I-877 in his FOIA request, which the agency claimed it had no record of.
“I’m disappointed in CBP and ICE for not being able to give me the documents that I have a copy of,” Mikkelsen told Hyperallergic. “If anything, it just looks like they are trying to hide something.”

Because it's OK to ban Nazism, and punish people who spread Nazism because Nazism is against our values.
But somehow it's not OK to ban extreme religion for the exact same reasons.
We need to get over the special pleading for religion. Religious extremism is just as harmful, probably even more than any other type of extreme ideology.
There's a reason MAGA is called a cult, and that's because they are in denial of reality, and blindly believe harmful dogma. Just like extreme religion.
In principle the acts of MAGA are also illegal in many ways in USA, but the law was never really upheld against them, and especially their leader. Once upon a time, treason of that kind would be illegal.
And in much the same way, religious cults value their own rules more than the rules that are decided by society.
Freedom of religion is considered a human right, but freedom FROM religion should be an at least equal right, especially for children.
Nazism had roots in extreme religion to persecute the Jews to the point of outright exterminate them, and now MAGA too has roots in extreme religion, and has many of the bad signs Nazism had in Germany.
I can understand why China doesn't want that shit.
But somehow it’s not OK to ban extreme religion for the exact same reasons.
Like Israel is doing in Gaza?
I have not heard that China is killing off Uighur's.
But Israel is fighting against an extremist and verifiably dangerous religious sect (Hamas). Surely that is righteous given your above comments?
And I'll just leave this here. It's well cited so follow sources if you like.
With regard to Israel/Palestine, both sides are infested with religious dogma, but Israel is an invader of Palestine. Israel should have no say at all on what goes on in Palestine.
You are making a slippery slope argument.
What I said was the religion shouldn't be allowed "special" pleading. Not that they can't have rights.
What I said was the religion shouldn’t be allowed “special” pleading. Not that they can’t have rights.
So perhaps I misunderstood when you said they don't have a right to exist (e.g. can be banned)?
But somehow it’s not OK to ban extreme religion for the exact same reasons.
I absolutely stand by my claim that religion should not have special pleading.
Obviously Islam in Palestine is not against the values of Palestine. Palestine is not for Israel to decide over and control.
If in society it is illegal to discriminate against women, religion should not be a free card to discriminate against women.
The religion needs to change to respect humanitarian values, society should not respect religious practices that don't.
If a extreme religion is against what we stand for as a society, why then is it more wrong to ban a religion than to ban Nazism?
Gotcha - free speech is at the pleasure of the state then?
Gotcha
🤣 🤣 🤣
And not even being able to answer the question. 🤣 🤣 🤣
Free speech is not absolute, and I live in probably the only country in the world that actually tried that!
Free speech ends for instance when it encourages crimes or oppress minorities, or is spreading harmful lies Religions often do all 3.
Free speech is not absolute, and I live in probably the only country in the world that actually tried that!
So it's at the pleasure of the state then?
I already answered your question, free speech is regulated everywhere, it's a moronic question, but I refuse to accept your rhetoric, as it has nothing to do with pleasure, that's a loaded question.
I answered your question, but you never answered mine!
Again: If an extreme religion is against what we stand for as a society, why then is it more wrong to ban a religion than to ban Nazism?
I already answered your question, free speech is regulated everywhere, it’s a moronic question, but I refuse to accept your rhetoric, as it has nothing to do with pleasure, that’s a loaded question.
I mean - you have completely agreed with me. You just like to phrase it in a way that is more weasel-wordy.
Again: If an extreme religion is against what we stand for as a society, why then is it more wrong to ban a religion than to ban Nazism?
Let me piss you off by answering your question with yet another question - who is determining what is a "religion that is against what we stand for as a society". And let me remind you who the current US president is.
Iran is running a patriarchy, that's their decision. But the way USA is turning is against everything USA stood for for half a century, and the decline of American values to an authoritarian regime that persecute minorities, completely against the idea of freedom that used to be important for Americans, and it is all driven by religion.
- with a mythology as the bastion of freedom, nation of immigrants, melting pot, etc leaning fascist hard enough to drive people toward a known fascist country
- with pride in science and innovation, leaning fascist hard enough to drive away the best and the brightest, the future of our science and innovation

we rejected their politics in the voting booth
This time. Polls last fall had PP set to win. Then Trump came along and we rejected it all. But now Carney, who rode to a win on "elbows up" appears to be putting his elbows down and is caving to Trump. I don't expect he'll win a second time.

I saw a documentary about a group that tried this during Trump’s first term in office.
The locals just referred to them as whacko American tourists, sold them kitsch, and otherwise left them alone, other than for the Canadian locals to politely refuse them entry to Canadian or environmentally restricted areas and facilities.
The locals (both Canadian and American) figured eventually some nutjob from away would make a bigger stink, but until then, they saw things as relatively in hand.
I’m surprised Noem hasn’t showed up there yet, like she did to the library that straddles the border.
If they were selling them stuff, this probably wasn't Macchias Seal Island, though it might be some other border area. There's not much there.

It's fucking stupid that there were that many people on that mountain in the first place. Climbing it is like a millionaires bucket list item, so many of those assholes do it.
I know it brings in a lot of money, so this will never happen, but I'd like to see the mountain completely closed. Pay the Sherpas to bring down all the dead bodies, then give them a pension. Some billionaire will no doubt try to buy their way in, but don't let them. Keep some things sacred above money, tell them to fuck off.

I gotta admit, I'm never upset when I hear about tourists dying on everest.
Rich people deserve every bad thing that happens to them until they give up their wealth or it's taken by force.
To me, it's not necessarily people climbing it that's the issue. It's that some people have so little respect for everyone and everything that they're perfectly content to use the world as their own personal trash can.
I shit you not, I recently chewed some lady out on the hiking trail 2 miles from my house because she chucked the plastic bowl and spoon from her lunch off into the woods, in front of God and everybody like it's just no big deal. Well it's a big fucking deal to me.
And if a person can't manage to go on a hike or scale a mountain without leaving their garbage behind like a slob, then they should stay home.

There is absolutely no valid reason you can give for this. You're literally excusing hurting nature because someone decided to do something that they couldn't handle, how does that make sense?
I'm not excusing a single thing, only stating a fact.
Lemmy sometimes makes me feel like I'm surrounded by small children or autists. My 12-yo daughter is autistic and even she has more social discernment than you fuckers.
"I don't like your statement of fact! And I'm taking that statement to mean you love that fact! Fuck you!"
Saw a commenter get downvoted to hell for clearly stating someone else's take on a thing. They made it clear they were explaining someone else's stance.
Lemmy: "Fuck you!"
If you like facts then you should know that “Autist” Is a rather controversial term in the autistic community, with many finding it dehumanising, and with a significant proportion of those who use it themselves doing so to “reclaim” it in an n-word-like “it’s okay when i say it, but not when you say it” way.
And if you really do have an autistic daughter, then you might want to do some internal reflection on why you think being “surrounded by […] autists” Is negative enough to use as an insult. Those kinds of attitudes can have negative impacts on children and can lead to internalised ableism. And if it’s not the kind of attitude you would show around her, then it’s worth asking yourself why not.
All the money in the world won't get you to the summit. And if you make it that far, you're not even halfway out of danger. The way down is so fucking brutal, people can't carry the extra weight of trash.
Money just gives you a ticket to ride, won't get you to the summit.
And if you think Sherpas are capable of carry frozen corpses down, that tells me you're ignorant on this subject. Read Into Thin Air if you want to know more. It's one of the most surprising non-fiction books I've read.
Into Thin Air x 100
Reading that book made me decide trying to climb Everest is a bad idea.
After reading that book, I laugh at the comments around here thinking a summit is available to anyone with the money. Aside from the dangers, I was astonished at how long people have to stay at the various camps to acclimate.
"Lazy fucks just leave their trash up there!"
Well, a couple of pounds of gear can easily be the difference in life and death.
EDIT: Should not have commented this around a bunch of fat fucks who don't leave their couch, let alone read about summiting Everest.
Hiked a few miles today. Flat terrain, super easy except for the sandy bits. Anyway, I no longer carry a pistol because that's 3lbs. of steel and ammo I don't need. BIG difference.

It is 100% overly wealthy, selfish people and the service workers they’ve trapped with them.
Spending thousands on gear, then going all the way to Nepal (a less developed country) to climb a mountain is the very definition of “overly wealthy.”
Nothing says “I don’t care about anyone else” like insisting on being the millionth tough guy to climb a mountain, just to say they did.
I think this should be part of the risk. Leave them up there and clean the bodies up when it thaws.
Additionally those are very important source of revenues for Nepalis…
Oh, that includes all of the equipment, flights, and transportation?
For one person, right? Comparing it to a family vacation proves my point. A douchebag insisting on going to a big mountain seems a little different than a family vacation…
I will never mind speaking in absolutes about this. If you care about going to Everest, you are a selfish asshole. Full stop. I don’t care that it’s affordable for you, that’s part of the problem.
I don’t care if the locals rely on the abuse, it’s still abuse.
Dude you have very weird and specific perspectives. To each their own doesn’t ring a bell? Is it an Everest specific issue or do you sell wholesale for other destinations as well?
Take that hait energy and make something positive out of it instead…
It’s actually ok to not like harmful things! It’s called having integrity.
Your arrogance is astounding.
My arrogance ? Sure is.. I’m the one judging everyone….
where do you draw the line of harmful things? We are by nature harmful things to a degree with all our activities…
This is not a valuable conversation, because I’ve already told you where I draw the line: somewhere BEFORE “I want to climb Everest.”
The fact that you can’t tell the difference between people traveling all the way to Everest and “everyone” makes me think you’re a bot or a troll.
Again, being judgmental is valuable, this conversation is not.
Billionaires shouldn’t exist, people shouldn’t go to Everest because they are insecure.
Not hard to understand. “But—” nothing.
Ok, you’re not even reading. Pathetic. I’ll block you now, bye!
Oh yeah there’s totally no difference between having a phone and going to Nepal to climb a mountain…
Genuinely: how fucking stupid are you?
I almost said computer but realized that couldn't be assumed. Fine, a phone is closer to a necessity.
There is still basically no difference between this and any other hobby that involves something manufactured by people in poor countries other than proximity to the people doing the labor. You are just mad that people who have either a bit or a lot more money for their hobbies have a hobby that doesn't appeal to you personally.
My whole point is that it is such a specific and hateful position… the guy should really chill down a bit.
At the very least I have an adopted brother over there that depends on tourists
That's the point, and that's why the guy is not "chill" about it.
Tourism is very much a colonial economy when there is income inequity. I am sorry that your adopted brother depends on tourists for income, but that does not justify the inequity.
If you were to hire a Sherpa in the Alps or Canada, you'd be paying a hell of a lot more for the privilege of the climb. So tell us again why these rich folks get away with paying so little...
When you make the argument that the locals depend on the income, you are also implying that it's OK the locals earn so little without these rich folks.
Nope, I’m not saying any of that. I’m just happy that he -specifically he who I very much know- can eat because some tourists pay him for his art. So in that frame it is not all negative.
Whatever the price is really, he comes from living in a monastery in India to going back to his home country and being able to sustain himself with that money.
System is not perfect but at least he eats.
If you worry about that you’ll have to consider all other inequalities in manufacturing as well… or in IT…. So why just that one example ?
You got that fucking backwards, sir.
One does not ask the oppressed to change the abusive relationship, one speaks to the pricks paying 50k to leave their actual feces and trash on a mountain to check a box.
Money alone won't get you up there. No matter how many Sherpa's you hire, it's brutal. People spends weeks and weeks at the various base camps just to acclimate, and that does nothing to add to their strength.
And yes they leave literal shit and O2 bottles. Carrying a few extra pounds on the way down could kill you. You have to give it nearly all you got to summit, then the descent is even more dangerous.
We could argue shutting down the mountain, but I've never heard of a solution to remove the trash. You have to carry it up, you can't carry it down.
Read Into Thin Air if you want to know more. I won't read it again, too brutal.
I read another headline earlier, something like "Blizzard strands 1000 people on Mt Everest."
And my early morning brain went "ugh Blizzard really is an awful company, going way too overboard with their promotional material." I wasn't even that surprised.
Now I see this headline and that earlier one makes more sense 😂
While it's tragic that the mountain is going to add to its death toll on this, the idea of people queued up on the world's tallest peak just for limited-time virtual merch, made me chuckle a bit.
After that all those years ago, I'm feel like stunts like that are far more plausible than ever.
Edit: I also keep forgetting about the stuff RedBull does these days...

Police to get new powers to crack down on repeated protests, says Home Office
Ministers are to give police new powers to target repeated protests, aimed particularly at cracking down on demonstrations connected to Gaza, the Home Office has said.
The announcement, made the morning after almost 500 people were arrested in London for expressing support for Palestine Action, a proscribed organisation, could allow police to order regular protests to take place at a different site.
Civil liberty groups express concern over plan for more anti-protest powers
Home secretary says police can consider ‘cumulative impact’ of rallies as Palestine Action ban opponents vow ‘escalation’Peter Walker (The Guardian)
Maybe you need to be the ones getting locked up in opposition then, because the silence has been deafening.
Sorry, you personally might not be in support of genocide if it benefits Israel, but that is how it looks.
Look at the US: a lot of Zionists aren't Jews but instead they're Christians.
The Zionists claim they represent the Jewish People (same as the NAZIs claimed they represented the Arian Race) but in reality they just represent themselves and other hateful individuals for whom the "lesser races" need to be taught their place.
Latching onto an "identity" is a pretty standard Fascist technique, though generally it's a nationality rather than an ethnicity (and, curiously, the Fascists who latch onto an ethnicity - such as NAZIs and Zionists - are significantly more murderous than the ones who latch onto a nationality - such as the Italian or Spanish Fascists).
And they were accusing protestors of taking police resources away from protecting synagogues after the Manchester terror attack. While they've been arresting old and disabled people for holding fucking signs.
This Labour government continues to hit new lows, they have honestly become worse than the Tories where civil liberties are concerned. They will do anything to protect Israel. They don't work for the British people, they work for Tel Aviv.
Well, the actual individuals in Government in the UK right now were literally given their position by Israel when Israel-linked Jewish Organisations in the UK spearheaded a campaign of slandering Corbyn and the Labour Party under his leadership as "anti-semitic", directly leading to his resignation and replacement with these people.
In the First Past The Post anti-Democratic voting system in Britain, leadership of the Labour Party means an almost certainty of getting into Government in the next 8 years, hence how Israel put them in power in the UK by giving them the Labour leadership.
Israel bought them and (pretty much the only positive thing about these people) they stayed bought.
I think the Met needs to ask themselves if they are police or government goons. Police can choose what they feel they need to enforce if they are concerned about escalating a situation.
Interesting note: I saw the chair of the Met Police Federation was saying that officers are sick of the position they have been put in and is calling for politicians and senior officers to sort it out.
Today the home office says "go harder!".
- Until recently any word against Israel was met with the antisemitism hammer. I don't think they realise how outdated that view is.
- Their hands are deep in the cookie jar. They've been supplying arms for 50+ years. "You weren't meant to kill people with them!"
- Trump in particular doesn't really care. All he sees is an opportunity to make money rebuilding Gaza.
- U.K. leadership has a real problem standing in opposition to Trump. They'll insult him in private, but whisper sweet nothings into his ear when in person. They think they're being clever. They're not.

For those of you doubting the claims for lack of evidence, stating that you'll "wait for the facts" or evidence before allowing yourslf to be outraged—
Where is your outrage for the countless other people who were there who personally testified to being beaten, abused, and paraded around like trophies?
There are already multiple interviews with Chris Smalls, a black American labor organizer, who directly confirmed that he had been beaten, choked, packed like a sardine into a small cell, sleep deprived, strip searched, and completely brutalized by the Israeli navy and prison system.
Ask yourself—why does this need to have happened to the appropriately aged, white, European female on a 4k, live streamed or recorded feed with corroborating testimony by the Israelis and the national newspapers of the country of origin of the supposed victim—why is that the bar you've set for credulity?
What does that say about you or your reaction to the situation?
Wake. Up.
Fuck the details, fuck the squabbling over what constitutes "roughness" versus physical assault. Fuck the inclination to want to hear "the other side" of the story. Things are going horribly wrong in Israel/Palestine—in a place that we've all been told over and over is supposed to be demonstrably above reproach. If even half these claims are true—if even a single one of them is true—what GOOD is it preserving the supposed beacon of democracy in the middle east when they treat foreigners this way?
Even if you think these activists are mentally unwell, or menaces, or being performative, or just doing this for "selfies"—so what? We all know these activists are obviously not terrorists and at least some of them genuinely believe what they are doing. None of this justifies their treatment. Nothing justifies the richest and proudest countries on earth—however much you might agree with that claim—what GOOD is that if our prisons condemn people to absolute squalor and abandonment to the whims of their guards?
HOW is this any different from the indignity camps? These peoples possessions were seized as trophies , their clothes taken, their bodies crammed together like chattel. Do there need to be ovens for there to be discernable lines? Must you feel the radiant heat on your own brows before you'll indulge the sensation that something isn't right here?
Wake. Up.
Funny how people did the exact same thing regarding the concentration camps the Nazis operated. People chose not to believe the reports they heard from the inside regarding the horrendous and deadly conditions. They "waited for the facts" which of course did not come out until after several years of grinding gruelling war, and well after the final solution began and the gas chambers were operational.
There's evidence enough as it all stands right now to know that Greta is being tortured and abused, and her human rights violated, as we know so many Palestinians have already been for decades and continue to be every day. Hell, the Israeli officials are constantly publicly bragging about the violations of human rights and international law they're committing, so maybe even listen to them when they do so?
So let's spread potential misinformation instead! Banzai!
(There's enough evidence of Netanyhau and Israel's atrocities not to have to potentially make shit up.)
Indeed, but that isn't my primary concern, since we have as much responsibility to call out their bullshit. Problem is that the media gets bored after one pass and never tried to correct the record.
A responsible CNN for example would call Trump out at every opportunity during live presentations and not broadcast anything pre-recorded that Trump says that doesn't have a basis in fact or hold any value to the public otherwise (like trump rambling nonsense reveals his worsening senility, which is handy to know).
FOX News isn't even worthy of criticism it's so utterly captured by the conservative propaganda machine.
Well yeah, but we've got plenty of facts already. Decades of facts, in fact.
It's like climate change. Yes, we're constantly learning new things, but the fact that we are in crisis is not disputable.
We have more than enough facts to condemn and convict Israel and Netanyahu of crimes against humanity.
From Hamas official statements. They hold civilians hostage which is a war crime. They've massacred villages which is genocide.
Do you deny Hamas committed genocide? Are you a genocide denier?
Pamasich likes this.
Armed resistance ain't genocide homeboy. Israeli targetted civilian population, used white-phosphorous & counter-bombardment in a densely-populated area.
Hamas targetted military personnel.
This kind of new atheist rhetoric is a distraction at best.
The actual problem is zionism.
While I wouldn't wish this on anyone, it's amazing how self-destructive this is. Greta is an internationally famous activist. Flagrantly violating and abusing a person with world renown - along with dozens of other activists - is a radically stupid way to hasten international isolation.
It is well known by most in Israel that the country simply cannot function in isolation. It will lead to collapse. In this, they are giving the flotilla far more power to eventually overthrow the ruling regime.
Respectfully:
Are you genuinely interested in exercising neutral skepticism? Or are you just arguing on the Internet against claims that run counter to your preferences for what you'd like to be true?
(Be honest.)
Does this cut both ways? Because I agree with what you: we should not reflexively believe sensationalist claims because they reinforce our preferred view of the world.
But under the exact same logic, we also should avoid dismissing sensationalist claims because they contradict our preferred view of the world.
Being aware of the manipulation you mentioned, and the fact that forces are trying to manipulate you in both directions on this issue... do you have any credible reason to dismiss testimony by Greta Thunberg to a Swedish diplomat regarding the treatment she experienced?
neutral skepticism?
Not OP but yes.
But it really doesn't matter. All we'll get from this incident is word-of-mouth only.
Those nazis are brazen but not stupid, they didn't film it.
lol hard doubt
edit: ~~to all those who can't employ critical thinking, representants for the swedish ministry of foreign affairs met Greta Thunberg on Saturday and received no reports of violence. She says there has been too little to eat and drink, she suspects there's bed bugs and she stated that she had to lay on hard surfaces. Nothing about what this article states, so unless it happened right after the embassy left, this is bull and only meant ragebait.~~
edit2: I would advice everyone to apply critical thinking when reading this article. It is framed in such a way as to invoke rage in readers and is probably not true.
Swedish representants for the foreign ministry has met with Greta which stated that there was lack of food and water and that they have to lay on hard surfaces in addition to receiving harsh treatment. No mentions of violence.
Now harsh treatment could cover a lot, but the fact that she hasn't mentioned that they were inflicted violence is a pretty strong indicator that this is not true.
In addition, swedish media hasn't covered this story which I have no doubt they would pick up on pretty fast since the flotilla and the genocide is well covered in media. This would be headlines to say the least.
If you can't understand why someone wouldn't go out in front of the world and make big statements in line with these claims, or any statement at all, immediately after a very traumatising experience then you really need to work on your empathy and understanding of basic human emotion. I understand your skepticism, to a point. I just gave a very obvious reason why she hasn't talked about the harrowing things she went through in detail to the public straight away, whether they are as is said in this article or not. Even thinking about them is going to be very difficult for her, nevermind doing what you're expecting
Edit: Taken out a sentence that isn't relevant, as I thought you were the OP of this comment thread before
I don't disagree with the sentiment at all, I just think when you report news like this, you do it responsibly. One of the reasons we're in the situation that we're in with massive distrust of institutions on the one hand, but widespread believe in conspiracy theories on the other is because fact checking has fled a lot of buildings, and depending on your biases people either doubt everything or believe everything dogmatically. There are other reasons of course, and root causes. But it sucks and is tearing us apart.
The Guardian article is worded much more equivocally. "Another detainee" claims she had to kiss the flag. She has given statements herself, but hasn't corroborated the other claims including of her own having been forced to do so. Heresay in general and limited sources.
All I'm asking is that articles make this obvious and don't sensationalize, like the article posted by OP. Whatever the case, the abuses by Israel we have solid evidence for are bad enough.
Israel accused of detaining Greta Thunberg in infested cell and making her hold flags
Activist tells Swedish officials she has been subjected to harsh treatment, including insufficient food and waterLorenzo Tondo (The Guardian)
Mate can you actually read? I replied to your comment to push back against you expecting Greta to be standing up on a platform and immediately talking about all of this stuff to the world when she's going to be very traumatised. And that she would be whether what the article says is true or not. That's it. Nothing else
My whole point has been about that, not about the article and it's accuracy. The only times I've said anything about the latter is cos you keep somehow not understanding that I'm not talking about the accuracy of the article and bringing it back up again. And even then the only thing I really said in response to that was pushing back against you saying The Canary is niche when it actually isn't really. And also telling you to read it, seeing as you clearly hadn't from what you've said in replies. You didn't understand entirely what you were arguing against in the article and now you're not understanding my point at all and have somehow gone off thinking I'm saying things that I'm not
She’s still a little kid. They made her suffer.
I think that's needlessly infantilizing her. She's 22. She's not a "little kid". I think she's old enough for her opinions to carry weight, so how is she a "little kid"?
I mean, I feel you, I remember aggroing over verbiage like that when I was younger, but as I am now approaching my upper 30s, I find myself referring to basically 25 yos and under as 'kids', its not necesarrily always meant in a demeaning, infantilzing way, can be meant more in the sense of...
... 'has their whole life ahead of them still, it shouldn't be marred or maimed or traumatized this early' /
/ 'they are adults technically yes, but they have far less experience than most other adults' /
/ 'they are too young to be beset by such cruelty and hardship, there should be other adults being better adults such that these awful things do not happen.'
I guess what I am trying to say is it becomes a kind of genuine, broad protective connotation, not trying to be belittling, moreso a lament that the world has failed.
Maybe call it a bungled attempt at intergenerational solidarity.
The thing is, she wasn't just called a kid, but a "little kid".
Sure, I'd call early 20s kids too. Hell, I'm a kid, I'm only turning 30 this year. But I wouldn't call someone a "little kid" once they hit their teenage years. The "little" is what makes the difference in tone. Could've said "she's just a kid" and it would've been a believable attempt at intergenerational solidarity.
With the most moral army in the world no less
Zionist gaslighting is second to none.
Once again another assumption, I was saying they're wrong in assuming no one here is posting this to other places, you don't know what we're doing, they just went on the attack from the get go and that's an immediate way to alienate instead of cooperate.
I get you're mad, the situation is atrocious, you cannot control it, you can control how you respond to it.
Regardless of what your opinions on Palestine might be, Israel really isn't beating the allegations right now.
I remember what I learned in school about this, it was described as a territory dispute between two equal belligerents. Maybe that was true 30 years ago, I don't know, but it really doesn't describe what's going on right now.
The war is over. Israel won, Palestine barely even exists anymore. This is the part where you're supposed to facilitate aid and win over the losers to your side. dafuq flavor of genocide you dune Israel?
of course, nobody who needs to read this will ever see it. I'm just upset that this kind of thing can even happen in current year.
Of course the second, I'm looking at current events like it's still 2015. not sure why I'm doing that, but fuck does current events make me miss 2015.
it was described as a territory dispute between two equal belligerents. Maybe that was true 30 years ago
It was never true. Israel has had the upper hand since it was founded. Colonialist oppressors always hold their positions through overwhelming force. Israel is no exception.
"They dragged little Greta (Thunberg) by her hair in front of our eyes, beat her, and forced her to kiss the Israeli flag. They did everything imaginable to her as a warning to others.
She’s still a little kid. They made her suffer"
I seriously doubt this is true.
and
Greta Thunberg is 22.
I think there were already plenty of reasons before that, so the condition is unnecessary here.
edit: maybe you really meant if(true) so it's fine.
It's lost the right to be a country
That seems rather extreme. It's never really been a thing to wipe out other warmongering, genocidal countries. Why them?
Something very similar was seriously considered for Germany at the end of WW2. Basically, wipe out all industry of Germany, make it an agricultural nation, and skilled workers can migrate to other countries. That's about as close as it gets to remove a country.
With that said, I believe Israel should be allowed to continue existing. But it should go trough a process like de-Nazification.

Burr is pretty genuine, and he's come a long way in the past 5-10 years (largely due to his awesome wife). However, he's still a "both sides" liberal when it comes down to it.
Maron is the real deal.
So what makes this worse then doing a show for the US? And I don't mean just now with Trump the US has been doing horrible stuff for decades, but do they get a pass because they are the "good" guys.
I mean they had Guatemala bay for how long.
No it says alot about you. The US has done horrible things but they get a free pass. Because they're the good guys and they're BS manifest Destiny complex.
Let's see removed democratically elected leaders in countries to stick in their sock puppet government.
Then goes to eat against that government when it no longer listens to them.
Then whisks people away tons jail where they get no.trial or anything and tortures them.
I mean the US is responsible for more deaths and pain and suffering then the Saudis. So why are they not worse because they're white.
Then not mention what Americas consumerist culture is and has done to the world.
Who says we get a free pass? The US isn't all white...
You know, it doesn't matter... The US and everyone in it is a villain. We're the worst country with the worst people. Someone should nuke us all and then the world would be a better place. All the white people here are just awful. Death to America!!
The equivalent would be these comedians doing a set that was paid for by the White House, with a list of restrictions on what could be said. Which would receive just as much backlash
And how many of these comedians hold their tongue regarding religion and people of power when performing in their home country? Or when touring internationally on non-state-funded tours?
Don’t take my opinion of these comedians as anti-Saudi. I was plenty anti-Saudi before this. If these ‘comedians’ agreed to take money from the US president to not make mean jokes about him, I’d be just as disgusted at their lack of spine.
I used to love standup comedy. These days I feel as though so much of the mainstream comedy scene is made up of immature losers who peaked in highschool. Joe Rogan, Bert Kreisher, Bobby Lee, Chris Distefano... I cannot stand these guys. The list goes on.
I thought Bill Burr was different. I'm really disappointed.
burr at least spoke out against the billionaire class....
but then he took the fucking bonesaw money. fuck.
I unsubscribed and sent him an email saying exactly why. No "dear billy blah blah" or "go fuck yourself" silliness either.
Others should too.
People: Billionaires are the problem
Also people: OMG Taylor Swift's new album just dropped! Let's go buy 3 different versions of it
I am really disappointed to see Bill Burr here. I'm not surprised to see Mark Norman and others who made a name for themselves by making jokes at others expense. They remind me of little kids in school picking on the fat kid or the new kid from another country.
I hate to bring this up, especially since SA kills people so openly, but the US's track record of committing terrorist acts, or supporting terrorism (South America) is terrible.
We're currently supplying weapons to Israel that they use to kill children. That's going on right now, they've killed like 60,000 Palestinians, 20,000 children. If you weren't American would you be okay with comedians playing in a country with America's history?
If you weren't American would you be okay with comedians playing in a country with America's history?
The difference is comedians performing at Riyadh are paid by the Saudi government. Comedians performing in US are not paid by US government.
These people are all willing to play shows in the US, why wouldn't you expect them to play in Saudi Arabia? Sounds like living in denial about our own country. Like the concept of blood diamonds; money from software made in the US has funded conflict all over the globe but no one called it blood software. We used to export soybeans and used the money to bomb foreigners and no one called em blood soybeans.
Moral failings are always some other countries problem, we're the shining city on the hill remember? /s
We're not great currently, but we are leaps and bounds better than Saudi Arabia right now.
Are you saying all entertainment folks in the US should just stop working? That is neither feasible or possible for non A-listers.
Edit: apparently some one is ok with already struggling artist starving. Hope you have the same energy when it's your turn to refuse work.
Edit 2: suck my cat's barbed dick.
Oh yeah. Definitely take a different view of Bill Burr.
But there's a local one legged pedal cad driver who I personally know just trying to make ends meet.
Should he suffer as well?
That pedicab driver also lives in South Florida.
Where in the fuck do you recommend he moves too?
It must be nice to cast judgement on others...
You're a bad person and you should feel bad.

these comedians arnt struggling lol, most of them are upper middle class or wealthy(millionaires.

No, you are not. You have fascist brigades roaming around terrorizing minorities, you have innocents being taken to illegal prisons, you have a worldwide media apparatus boosting fascism all over the world, 20% of male black US population goes through jail (where slave labour is legal) at some point of their lives, you are intervening in regime change and upholding fascist puppets like Milei or Bolsonaro, you start war after war after war, and last but not least, you're materially and diplomatically enabling the genocide of Palestinians by the fascist ethnostate of Isntreal. The US is not "leaps and bounds better than Saudi Arabia".
Saudi Arabia is an absolutist monarchy where the person in power is a monarch, so playing a show for the monarchy is playing a show for the people in power.
The USA is a capitalist country where the people in power are capitalist owners, so playing a show in a privately-owned venue is playing a show for the people in power.

TLDR: Who gives a shit?
A. Is it really necessary to split hairs like this here? You come across as just looking for a pointless, pedantic argument.
Obscure characterization of someone else's motivation != anything useful. (Am I doing this right?)
B. He fixed his list so it doesn't matter. And if you did see his original list, then you could just RTFA they linked and figure it out.

I wish I could pirate this media more, but I’m already not paying for it. But, at least, I can go online and be indignant about it!
‘They’re paying me enough to look the other way’
That is at least an honest approach instead of "We'll change things over there with our comedy".
Just stfu next time it's about politics (hint: they won't).
The only guy that is surprising for me is Bill Burr. Not exactly financially hanging on by a thread but still selling out like that.
It's always about the money for these pricks.
Don't fool yourselves into thinking entertainers are your friends. They're not.
Same, very surprised by Bill Burr and that it wasn't a bit for him to tell the Saudis some hard truths either.
Instead, he gives us a weak-ass "they are the same as us" response because they have the same crappy fast-food...
Grifters, kindly fuck off the stage.
Inb4 they whine in their next comedy specials that they're 'being cancel cultured again by Gen Z' and this time its 'just for working'.
Cue laughs from conservatives.
Yet as a country they buy their oil and supply them weapons, but this is a bridge too far I suppose.
Argh I'm so upset by this betrayal I'm going to type something on the internets.
That'll solve it.

US imports of Saudi oil have not been significant for awhile now, North American oil production has increased massively over the past several decades. The US has actually been energy independent and a net exporter for around 5 years or so I think.
I don't think many Americans are happy about the US relationship with Saudi Arabia but it doesn't get shoved in their faces often so when comedians act like this it becomes an avenue for that anger to be expressed. Many Americans have parasocial relationships with comedians, and/or have this idea that they are "fearless truth-tellers", so it hits a lot different compared to abstract foreign policy and people get a lot more easily riled up about it.

It's not that black and white. Initially, the government wanted to closely police everything that was said. But they softened their stance after some back and forth. So Saudis who attended the shows were exposed to some mildly sacrilegious stuff. Religious fundamentals could frankly use a lot more of that in this world, and hopefully they will be less crazy as a result.
idk, i'm just getting tired of this hyper-fixation on holding performers to some lofty standard. He did something that isn't remotely enough to land him in prison, so I'm going to not care at all and keep enjoying his comedy. Seems fairly reasonable to me.
To me this does not feel like an especially lofty standard. Particularly for someone like Burr who is already wealthy and established enough that a $1m paycheck isn't life changing money.
I do agree that religious fundamentalists could use more exposure to people speaking freely and openly, but that is not what this is. Besides the government imposed restrictions on topics they were allowed to mention in their sets, the audience itself is the wealthy elite from Riyadh who are the least religious and most secular segment of Saudi society. These are a bunch of rich folks who can fly to NYC whenever they want to catch any comedy show they want to see.
The reason that performers and comedians in particular piss people off is because of the whole free speech thing. It is a gross look to be someone reliant on freedom of expression for your career to take money from the guy who notoriously had a journalist brutally tortured and chopped up with a bone saw. And it's not like that is the only horrific thing MBS has done either, it wasn't even the first or last journalist he has murdered. If they were just performing in Saudi Arabia for some kind of private org and the money wasn't being paid directly by MBS there would be significantly less anger or sense of betrayal from their fans. MBS is a notorious psychopath directly responsible for horrific crimes and anyone who associates with him is going to be tainted by it, there is no getting around that.
Theyre comedians, dude. They do corporate gigs all the time, and always have. And no one gave a shit. Even though many of those corporations would be evil as fuck as well.
But in the case of this, you could at least make the argument that theres a greater good being served, in so much as that the country is being exposed to new ideas and views through comedy. Bill Burr said "theyre just like us" when talking about the people, and social media crucified him for it. Why? Because they hold the people to account for the actions of their leaders. Which to give it context, would be like calling someone a Trump voter because they happen to be American.
The whole outrage is fucking stupid. The focus should be on the Saudi leaders, who are once again trying to wash their image on the global stage. But instead, all we hear about is how much of a piece of shit Bill Burr is... Tell me, do you go this hard on City group? Man City, New York City teams are sports washing pure and simple. Wheres all the outrage about that, which has been going on for more than a decade?
I am trying to think of a corporate gig that would be comparable. Being a murderous dictator who has journalists butchered is generally viewed as being significantly worse than your average CEO by most people. Maybe you could say taking money from Erik Prince is sort of on par? I would expect there to be a somewhat equivalent level of outrage in that scenario. Bill Burr whoring it out for a more normal corporate overlord who isn't directly involved in torturing and murdering people isn't going to draw the same kind of condemnation though.
I agree that the only slightly compelling argument in this is that there is some greater good being served here, but it is impossible to ignore the reality of the situation. MBS is directly paying them, there are rules about what they are allowed to say, the audience is a bunch of wealthy elites who already have easy access to anything they want, and the intent of the whole thing is very obviously part of the larger image rehabilitation campaign that MBS has been attempting to pull off for the past few years by throwing his blood money around. Burr got crucified for what he said because it is exactly what MBS wants him to say. Burr saw a bunch of fast food places and that was enough for him because he is being paid, and he knows if he said some real shit about MBS it would be a problem.
I do tend to go this hard on whoever. If they want to associate with someone like MBS I am going to judge the shit out of them for it just like I would anyone else. It's disgusting behavior whoring yourself out to a dictator. I don't need people like that in my life and I regret that I have to share this planet with them.

arguing it is for the greater good that “freedom-of-speech machines” such as himself bestow their “edgy” material on the kingdom and its subjects.
Yeah...
The lineup features Dave Chappelle, Louis CK, Bill Burr, Kevin Hart, Whitney Cummings, Pete Davidson, Aziz Ansari and Jo Koy, among many others who are all taking their fees directly from the Saudi government.
Burr being on that list surprises me, but it said he’s also been to UAE. Davidson is pissing on his father’s grave.
They have also taken flak from their peers. “The same guy that’s gonna pay them is the same guy that paid that guy to bone-saw Jamal Khashoggi and put him in a fucking suitcase,” said Marc Maron in a standup clip posted on his Facebook.
Exactly.
Greedy fucks, all of them.
Mike Birbiglia apparently turned it down, but didn't make a big deal out of it.
There's no way that Nate Bargatze and John Mulaney didn't get offers. I have to assume they turned it down based on the fact they didn't go.
Jim Jefferies disappeared from the Riyadh festival lineup after he said on Theo Von’s podcast: ‘One reporter was killed by the [Saudi] government – unfortunate, but not a fucking hill that I’m gonna die on.’
What a fucking loser. He threw his soul away AND lost the payday. Lose-lose fucking loser.
The rest is even more cringy
"arguing it is for the greater good that “freedom-of-speech machines” such as himself bestow their “edgy” material on the kingdom and its subjects."
It is one thing to sell your soul for money (or try anyways lol) but it is an entirely another level of loser quality to pretend like you are fighting for freedom while doing it.
My thought about the whole thing was that if someone went there and, in spite of the agreement they signed, teed off on the Saudis and whatever else they were forbidden from discussing, I'd have had respect. Was honestly hoping that's what Burr was intending to do. I'd have donated to the GoFundMe for them to fight the inevitable lawsuit from the Saudis.
Obviously didn't happen. We live in a difficult world, and when presented with the choice between fighting (hard) and rolling over (easy), people take the obvious choice. I don't know if I'm doing it differently.
Are these sets even recorded and able to be viewed somewhere, or were they essentially private? If they're private, I dunno, I get it.
Wasn't that journalist an American citizen?
And I question whether it would even lead to real problems with the current admin or if he'd just call it a good idea on social media and applaud them for dealing with someone for saying such nasty things about them. And unleash riot forces on protestors (or just use it as an excuse to try to ramp things up more).
What I find most weird about him choosing to die on that hill is it wasn't even a good transphobic joke.
Literally just hurr durr she has a dick.
"...He did not address the criticism directly, but he did suggest he was happy to forget 9/11 for the right price: “I just know I get the routing, and then I see the number, and I go, ‘I’ll go.’” "
Apparently $375,000 is enough for Pete Davidson to piss on his fathers memory
It's a bit weird to me how hyperfocused gamers are on Saudi Arabia. No, they do not own EA, it's a joint venture between two other US investment firms;
Silver Lake Partners: A private equity firm focused on technology and media investments. Silver Lake is also part of the new Oracle-led joint venture set to take on management of TikTok's U.S. operations.Affinity Partners: Led by Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, the firm is a participant in the buyout.
Why not focus on weirdly rich Trump's son-in-law? Knowing it's family, the thought of Trump family owning EA sounds worse than Saudi Arabia fund.

last time I checked Trump wasn't cutting off hands.
Do you KNOW what your country does to death row prisoners??? ; you got no place to be throwing stones from.
yeah I do.

fucking nothing
So? People are mad at EA being sold, among others, to saudi arabia. Who cut off hands for theft.
EA has been dogshit for decades now anyway.
Not sure why you had to try to bring me and my country into it, but I don't buy EA games, I don't go to the US, I don't go to Saudi Arabia.
They drove a dumptruck of money to his door, he's not made of stone.
But you have to wonder if these guys are just grabbing the silverware before political satire is banned by zee Republicans.
Extremely disgusting. I already found most of these people uncool and unfunny but I thought Bill Burr was at least alright (still didn't think he was funny, but he at least seemed to have sane political views - guess not). The only way any of them can make this a respectable choice is if they're doing it Trojan Horse style, and they're planning to tell a bunch of jokes shitting on Saudi Arabia and calling them out for their infinity of evil acts. Not getting my hopes up for that, though.
The Guardian remains respectable and has not pulled punches in this article at least.
“One reporter was killed by the government – unfortunate, but not a fucking hill that I’m gonna die on,” Jim Jefferies said on Theo Von’s podcast in August, arguing it is for the greater good that “freedom-of-speech machines” such as himself bestow their “edgy” material on the kingdom and its subjects. (Since making the comments, Jefferies has since disappeared from the festival’s lineup; his representatives did not respond to inquiries about this.)
lol
How high is that number? According to Dillon, pretty high: in the same podcast that got him fired, he said the organizers offered him $375,000 and claimed that some comedians were offered millions. Gillis did not reveal how much the organizers offered him, but he did say that when he initially refused, they “doubled the bag”. Tough news for Dillon, who elsewhere claimed he asked for $500,000 but had to settle for less.[Nimesh Patel] suggested that he could make up for the loss by performing “40 shows … here in the perfectly clean, moral, above-everyone-else United States of America.”
Would be funny if any of these comedians accepted but did a shit job on purpose to get booed off stage, then just explained that stunt as "giving their money's worth"

LUKS decrypt at boot over SSH?
I've done a little research but curious about first hand experience.
I've got a little home server that is full disk encrypted with LUKS (+LVM, of course). It's headless (no display, no keyboard, etc) and just lives attached to the back of my desk, out of the way.
If it gets rebooted due to a power outage, I can plug in a keyboard, wait long enough for it to get to the LUKS password prompt, enter password, hit enter, and assume it worked if I see the disk activity light blinking. Worst case scenario, I can move it to a monitor and plug it in to get display too.
Because lazy, I'd prefer to be able to enter the decrypt password remotely. "Dropbear" seems to be a common suggestion but I haven't tried it yet.
So, asking for your experience or recommendations.
I'll start. Recommendation #1 - get a UPS : D
... But besides that.
Addendum: either way, I currently need to be home to do this because I access it remotely via tailscale along with my desktop. Since both are full disk encrypted, neither will boot to the point of starting tailscale without intervention. But, I might repurpose a nonencrypted RPi with SSHd to act as a "auto restarts with tailscale so I can SSH to it, then SSH to server to enter the LUKS password" jump point.
O, I fully intend to. Just wanted to ask for opinions who have done it or have tried other things while I'm sitting here waiting for an appointment.
Plus content... Lemmy... Engagement. If nobody posts then there's nothing here
If you run a system that uses dracut to manage its initramfs, then github.com/gsauthof/dracut-ssh… might be of use to you.
I have it setup on a server running Fedora and can’t complain. When the system reboots and plymouth shows the LUKS password prompt a ssh server is started in the background as well - so I can unlock the server either using keyboard or connect via SSH.
When rebuilding the initramfs (eg. for a new kernel version) the ssh server is installed and setup automatically so I don’t really have to worry about anything after the initial setup.

This is my setup as well, having a headless Fedora server, being able to unlock over SSH makes things a breeze.
Clevis with TPM+Tang is the most secure you're going to get as far as automated unlocking goes.
docs.redhat.com/en/documentati…
Dropbear is still a thing, but going to be more problematic.
If I'm reading the docs correctly, Clevis can rely on a separate Tang server for retrieving the decryption key, right? So in that scenario I'd need to have another machine for Tang that can also auto-boot without entering a boot/LUKS password. Otherwise, if both machines (server+clevis and Tang server) were in the same room and restarted due to power loss, neither would be able to boot if both were encrypted... or did I misunderstand something important?
And I don't think I actually want "automatic" unlocking. I just want to be perform the unlock (enter LUKS password) remotely. I realize that comes with manual intervention (entering the password remotely) but I'm okay with that. I should probably have clarified that by "home server" I mean a machine the serves nice to have stuff, nothing mission critical. Plus I'm really the only one who uses it currently so I'll notice it's down when something doesn't work and can then initiate the remote unlock/boot : D
Clevis is interesting but I don't think it matches my specific situation. Glad I know about it now though, thanks for the info.

If you just want to remotely interact with LUKS to unlock it, I think dropbear-initramfs module is your only option.
Clevis+Tang is essentially the same thing but automatic, and yes it does require a separate machine and network access to that machine.
I do LUKS over https right now. The secret is to pass keyfile for decrypt as sh script that calls curl and echos the passkey back.

Ubuntu server with two SSD RAID1 array, LUKS encrypted with keyscript taking key over curl ftp/http.nowicki.io
Same boat. I'm currently testing some unlock stuff out. I just got USB unlocks to work for Debian by following this: tqdev.com/2022-luks-with-usb-u…
I load a USB with a keyfile, then read the keyfile during boot. If I don't have the USB plugged in, I fallback to entering a passphrase. I have multiple LUKS encrypted disks and I don't want to type out a long passphrase a bunch of times.
I briefly encountered dropbear during my research... but ended up following the USB path because it kinda seemed a little easier to setup. 🤷
Anyone have any thoughts on USB vs dropbear unlocks?
LUKS with USB unlock
I feel that using full disk encryption of laptops is a must. Not to protect against attacks with physical access (to the unencrypted boot loader or unprotected BIOS), but to avoid leaking data when the laptop is either lost or stolen.tqdev.com
I'd imagine that if you have physical access and don't mind plugging in a USB then that's the easier route.
My personal goal is to be able to unlock it remotely in two main scenarios :
1. I'm lazy and don't want to have to awkwardly fumble at plugging in something. So, SSH to it from the same room and unlock it from my desktop.
2. Server got rebooted while I'm away from home but I would really like it to be up and running again for something I need but I don't have physical access at the time.
Both of those situations lean towards a remote unlock with no USB. The first one is absolutely doable because I have local access and could plug a device in, it's just awkward. On the second, physical access is impossible so it must be done remotely.
I mentioned it in another comment but the remote unlock while away from home presents extra challenges for me because I access my server externally via Tailscale. Since Tailscale isn't available at boot (pre-decrypt), then I'll have to tailnet+ssh to another machine on the LAN (that doesn't require a boot password/unlock) and then SSH from that machine to the server to enter the LUKS password to allow boot to continue. Sounds feasible, though perhaps a little clunky. That's my current plan and hoping to try it out this weekend if time permits.
Just one... For now 😀
It's a Lenovo Tiny refurb and came with a 1TB NVMe which is plenty for playing around but I'll have to expand if I move my Jellyfin instance to it.
Ah, nice ok. Your post got me to look at dropbear a little more closely, but since I got a bunch of disks, I think USB unlock makes more sense in my setup. I'm using a keyfile on the USB to unlock a bunch of disks on boot. But if I only had one, then dropbear would be more doable for me.
Neat! Interesting post!
On my Debian systems I use mandos to unlock LUKS during boot. All done over WireGuard which is loaded inside initramfs.

Cool! I might install something like this someday.
Do you use secure boot? What device is your server? I would use my laptop for that, but not sure if that's how it should work.
This is interesting, another one I hadn't heard of yet. And, the server is running Debian : )
I enjoy the intro too :
You know how it is. You’ve heard of it happening. The Man comes and takes away your servers, your friends’ servers, the servers of everybody in the same hosting facility. The servers of their neighbors, and their neighbors’ friends. The servers of people who owe them money. And like that, they’re gone. And you doubt you’ll ever see them again.
That is why your servers have encrypted root file systems
asking out of curiousity: what benefits does encryption have here?
as long the server runs everything is decrypted right?
so you are encrypting for the case when someone actively steals your hardware?
edit: stealing as in taking away.
but this would mean accessing during runtime is nonetheless possible in a decrypted way?
shredding those things took ages (4 TB drives). lesson learned, new drives are btrfs + LUKS that gets unlocked via key file. so when the time comes to sell those, I won't bother with shredding, just sell them as is.
In addition to drives being safer to replace and sell, encryption at rest should also protect against theft. So the scenario being someone taking the server or its drives.
At least for me encrypting the drives gives a bit more peace of mind seeing as credentials for various accounts aren’t easily retrieved from the disks.
But yeah, this does not protect from data being read at runtime
luks will also prevent or uphold the encryption if e.g. the power is pulled?
+this means that if someone breaks in, cuts the cables during running decrypted the data is still safe?
Yes it's not too much bother to set this up, it can be put into ansible and once working I've not had to touch it again. Here's another dracut tool using dropbear that works well and has decent instructions on setup: dracut-crypt-ssh
The crypt-ssh dracut module allows remote unlocking of systems with full disk encryption via ssh
GitHub - dracut-crypt-ssh/dracut-crypt-ssh: dracut initramfs module to start dropbear sshd during boot to unlock the root filesystem with the (cryptsetup) LUKS passphrase remotely
dracut initramfs module to start dropbear sshd during boot to unlock the root filesystem with the (cryptsetup) LUKS passphrase remotely - dracut-crypt-ssh/dracut-crypt-sshGitHub
Interesting, I want to try some of these solutions.
I set up luks on some of my selfhosted virtualbox instances to protect against physical theft, but power issues cause all too frequent restarts that are a serious pain to physically access.
An ssh call in a script that could be remotely used to unlock and complete the boot would be so handy.
I use dropbear in initramfs on my Debian server. Works great.
At home I have a cheap networked KVM because I also sometimes have hardware problems preventing a boot. Works really well. Cost 100 € and uses open source software. It's called GL.iNet KVM.
Good to hear. This will be going on a Debian server too.
I just set up tailscale on the RPi that controls my printer so I've got a jump host on the LAN now... Just need to make time to setup dropbear (and keys) on the server.
Hassan? pretty underwhelming, in short, dog is walking around on this treadmill kind of thing, looks to me almost obvious that his dew claw got snagged on it and he yelps, roughly at the same time hassan's hand is out of frame for a few seconds (that some are claiming he is pushing a shock remote).
oh and someone found a 2 year old clip of him saying that his friend gave him a shock collar that is laying around his house but he'd never use.
Along with drawn child porn he claimed were "goblin coded" and "shortstack" but came from lolicon artists.
Not relevant to the meme though
The dog is a girl, the appears to bend her ankle on the dog bed (it’s a stretchy material, the dog bed is like one of those fancy office chairs’ material) and the yell. Hasan was reaching off frame and that is “evidence” that he “must have” been abusing her with a 10000 volt shock therapy to make her gay or something.
Imagine that we didn’t even needAI to make people believe fake shit with no evidence.
It's kind of depressing to watch so many people just embrace this kind of naked smearing of someone.
I don't know Hasan's work. I know Vaush, and I think he frankly sucks. In either case, I'd rather people just say, 'Fuck that guy, I don't like him as a person' rather than diving into this practice of labeling everyone you don't like as a pedo or some other flavor of sick abusive pervert. It's gross.
My philosophy is that I personally don't know any internet personalities, so can't defend any actions they made unless they are complete lies. When watching the clip, it wasn't clear Hasan didn't shock his dog.
In the video, Hasan yelled at the dog, reached offscreen, the dog yelped, and Hasan didn't go to help.
And I am a Hasanabi fan. I greatly appreciate the work he has done for Palestine, and leftists agenda in the west. There is a universe where Hasan didn't shock his dog, was just annoyed at it, reached offscreen and for a seperate reason (like the dew claw getting caught), the dog yelped. But since none of us know Hasan personally, or privately, we can't tell.
Personally, I lay on the side of not believing it, because although there is evidence that the collar was a shock collar, I have seen streams/clips where Kaya runs around freely, greeting guests etc. Either way I will continue to watch him, because I value his political analysis, but don't freely defend strangers private lives on the internet.
Hasan supports the fascist takeover of Ukraine by Putin. He also supports fascist Iran-backed Hamas, the suppressors of Gaza. People like Hasan drag the left movement into the dirt so we will never take off.
At best, he is a grifter that found a profitable influencer nieche, at worst he is a psyop to herd and discredit us.
Also he appears to view himself as his dog's superior instead of his caretaker, which hints at a right-wing world view. Also shock collar user, so he's a tormentor.
I haven't seen any proof he did do it either. If we're weighing the circumstantial evidence available? There's much more pointing towards that dog being treated well than poorly.
I have also seen a lot of proof that there is a targetted smear campaign against him, which leads me to be a lot more critical of all the info presented by both sides.
It's so obvious that the dog was trained with a shock collar that the people pushing the idea have just spent the last few days using a clip with one of Hasans streamer/podcast friends popping his chewing gum into the mic as "proof" he's clicking a button to shock the dog...
For a guy who streams 6+ hours 6 days a week and has done for the entire time he's had the dog.
Almost like the entire thing is hysteria driven by weirdo freaks who have even weirder hate boners and will make things up based on literally nothing other than circumstance.
I've just never enjoyed his content tbh. He also encourages faith in American electoralism to an extent that makes me uncomfortable and participates in drama slop too much for me to enjoy.
I know that last bit may seems strange considering what I have posted but I generally do not directly consume internet drama. I have never seen anything from the channels of either of these people. I just hear about it from other people and go, haha funny.
He is hypocritical, claiming that he wants liberation and rights for all and then continuing to pay people to torture animals to death so he can get a little pleasure from it.
I don't unterstand why people are so hung up on the whole 'did he schock the dog or not' thing when they mostly pay for way worse stuff to be done to animals.

Hamas, the suppressors of Gaza
Fuck off back to reddit with the Zionist rhetoric.
I learned that the guy on the left is Hasan and thr guy on the right is Vaush by the comments. I then spent too long figuring out what the scale was....and it seems to be that there is no difference?
Both people seem to take fine care of their dogs? Fun fact: Abused animals don't crawl into your lap and expose their bellies for affection. That is a sign of mutual trust and companionship.

Rajoelina, 51, was first president from 2009 to 2014 before returning to power in 2023. He was increasingly isolated after losing the support of a key army unit that joined thousands of youths activists known as “Gen Z Madagascar” to protest against corruption and poverty. The movement had earlier turned down an invitation to meet him for dialogue and demanded his resignation....
Among the demonstrators were soldiers from the elite Capsat unit, which played a major role in the 2009 coup during Rajoelina’s rise to the presidency after mass protests forced his predecessor Marc Ravalomanana out of power.
I believe I read in another article that the soldiers that helped his return to power in 2023 also publicly called to oppose Rajoelina.
I don't really understand how the president was allowed to have dual citizenship. For senior positions in the judiciary/legislative/executive branch, I don't think dual citizenship should be allowed. You can make rare, special exceptions, but not for the presidency (or say the supreme court or party leadership).
He’s a French citizen and is perceived as supporting French interests in this former French colony whereas other presidents tried to move Madagascar in other directions.
Rajoelina took power after a military coup in 2009. He was a radio DJ and mayor of the capital city who encouraged the overthrow of the former president, so him getting overthrown himself is a pretty interesting turn of events.
