anyone familiar with the american history of manifest destiny (aka the colonial genocide of the native american peoples) will recognize both what russia is doing, and the map of ethnic peoples in russia. czarist russia, the soviet union, and now the russian federation, have all been engaged in an imperial colonial project. the russian treatment of the Ukrainian people has been extraordinarily similar to the united states' treatment of the Cherokee and Iroquois nations

i'm not sure i understand, but i am north american. the reason i posted this is there's a particular set of people on here who believe everything done by the usa is bad (a form of black and white thinking that's frankly quite understandable) therefor any country that accepts aid from the usa must be evil (a form of black and white thinking i can absolutely not endorse) and any country that undermines US imperialism must be good (another form of black and white thinking i can absolutely not endorse). this crowd is frequently on lemmy saying that russia's genocide in eastern ukraine is:

not really happening and is a fabrication of the cia controlled western media
if it is happening, is limited to a few troops acting against their commander's orders
if it is widespread, it's not really a big deal because talking about it is just a distraction from the genocides in Gaza and Sudan (though they usually don't bring up Sudan, they only want to talk about Palestine. and they certainly don't want to talk about the latin american genocide or the |uygher genocide)
if it is a big deal, it's ultimately not russia's fault, it's simply what war is and russia must commit to war in order to bring about communist utopia everywhere through a process that can only be described as "somehow"
if it is russia's fault, it was simply an understandable miscalculation any country could have made
if russia did intend to commit genocide against the Ukrainian people, it's because all Ukrainians, yes all of them, even the anti-zionist jewish ones, are nazis

this particular crowd will say the most absurd shit like that spelling Kyiv "Kyiv" is russophobic. i don't know how you can even hold that position. Kyiv is a living community filled with people who spell it "Kyiv". when they ask that news outlets spell it "Kyiv" instead of "Kiev" it's because they live there. it's the name of their city. it more accurately portrays how the people there think of and pronounce the name of the community they are part of. calling that russophobic is like saying the fact that the first english colony in north america is spelled "Virginia" now instead of "Firginia" is anglophobic.

anyway. i try to point out to people that my enemy in this global system of terror is not strictly speaking russia, or the russian people, or even really the kremlin or putin. these are all entities that are complicit in the actions of my true enemy, but i am, just like everyone, complicit in the actions of my true enemy: colonialism. i unfortunately have a very solid understanding of the ravages of colonialism. my family arrived in the united states fleeing genocide in the old country. i live on stolen land in a community whose history is primarily centered on the extractive exploitation of petrochemicals. i do not see russia's actions and see liberators. i see more of the same. i see my enemy: colonialism.

so i speak. i name what i see for what it is in hopes that others will begin to understand that our global system of terror provides us no pure allies and no single individual entity to blame. colonialism was not brought into this world by the usa, china, or russia, though all three are engaged in it in order to further their aims of control. no people will ever be made whole by the black and white thinking that any of the empires are their true ally or true enemy. in fact, black white thinking is a tool of our opressors. it makes us easier to manipulate.

What you say of the Russian Empire and the contemporary Russian Republic regarding treatment of the Ukrainians is true, but it's simply false when it comes to the USSR. The USSR defended Ukrainian sovereignty from the start, creating a Ukrainian republic with Ukrainian as the official language, a majority of publications in Ukrainian, right to an education in Ukrainian, and representation of Ukrainian politicians to the point of the USSR having as party leaders for the most part Ukrainians such as Khruschev or Brezhnev. Had it not been for the Soviets (including Ukrainian themselves), Ukraine would have turned into a genocided German colony in the 1940s according to Generalplan Ost, or at best many of its territories would still belong to Poland such as the city of Lviv.

Back before the latest war kicked off and nobody gave a shit about Ukranian sovereignty outside of that one bit on Seinfeld, Crimea was a discussion point for one reason or another. With the main argument being that russia can't give it back because it is not even Ukranian in culture or ethnicity and is really russia anyway.

And a friend pointed out... they aren't wrong. Because they ethnically cleansed the hell out of it after invading.

Russia has a long history of cultural and ethnic cleansing. They treat every territory they hope to eventually claim like the apocryphal story of "the Nazi bar". The first guys who show up are perfectly polite and helpful, with good reasons for being there. Then they bring in their friends and family which is totally reasonable. Then those people bring in their friends and family. And it keeps happening, and eventually they are so culturally and linguistically distinct that it's time for them to demand autonomy and independence, which they won't be able to get on their own. So then they send in Russian troops to protect their Russian civilians, and before you know it, it turns out your country was actually Russia all along. All of Russia's neighbors and post-Soviet states understand this because they've been victims of it. Sometimes more than once.

Another component is Sevestopol, within Crimea, which has largely been a (colonial) Russian city for almost its entire history. The USSR eedesignated it as a part of Ukraine in the 1950s.

Dude I grew up socialist at heart, my great-grandpa was at the ford riots where people got shot.

But this shit nonsense that tankies spew make me almost want to rebrand my beliefs. You can't just say that atrocities didn't happen because you like the general philosophy of the political system. (Even though it was communism for exactly 3 minutes before sliding into good ol' authoritarianism)

I get the same shit talking to some super pro china folks. Yes, amazing leaps and technological bounds are happening and socially a lot of commendation is due. I am really, really in awe of some of their progresses. But it's really really weird how they go into full-on denial mode if I mention that one time a local mayor or whatever farted during a town hall. That apparently becomes "western propaganda", no matter how happy I am to talk shit about the shortcomings of my country as well. Blind nationalism makes me really crazy. And I'm American who's lived in Asia for a long time so I can really feel it when they're just talking shit. I grew up with mindless US propaganda, and have spent the past 20ish years hearing Asian "never ever lose face" "everything is fine and always has been fine forever aside from that one time when we defeated the despicable enemy of our glorious party!!!!!

Guys it's just as stupid to hear from your nation as it is to hear from the US. We're all flawed. Admit it so we can continue to improve instead of locking into a shitty system so we don't offend the great grandfather of the nation or whatever dumb thing. Be yourself ffs. A lot of people from the past were horrible dicksuckers and you should have more confidence in your own personal ideas, be careful choosing idols. Most of them were just shitbags who ended up the victors. And as we all know, history i written by the victors.

+1, I get it.

I don't know how to say this inoffensively, but I think China (speaking broadly) has a cultural victim complex, which is understandable given their history.

And I think China and Russia governments stoke this victimization for political benefit, kinda like the US convervative movement is doing now.

Anyway, I think that leads to reflexive denial of their own atrocities as if its an abuser blaming a more enlightened victim. And as for the tankies actually outside of those countries, well... I don't really know.

I think part of it is younger people waking up to how propagandized our government has made them, and then swinging to the opposite side. Like "All that stuff the soviets or ccp said must have been true if so much of what our government said was a lie". I did something like that after leaving the evangelical church when I was 18. Strong to atheism before adopting a more open-minded approach with room for the fact that I can be very mistaken.

I understand the cultural victimization thing, and it is completely understandable. China is a very unique case, we can learn a lot from them, I just hope that we can come to respect each-other enough to learn from our advantages instead of one-upping our destructive tendencies. Chinese people are awesome, Americans are cool too. And each nation has an equal amount of uncool people. Progress could be easier if we could all be nationalistically humble. Course it would help if we didn't have a millenia-long history of just killing and taking what we want, that is a big phase to get out of.

So yes, by default you are paying with data. In fact IMHO if possible one should not rely on Meta hardware. That being said if you get e.g. a 2nd hand Quest 2 or 3 and use it without an account then you might be providing little to no money to Meta and no data. It's not trivial but it's feasible. Arguably it's even easy for somebody who seriously consider such an endeavor of assembling their own HMD.

PS: Meta has access to the whole device but... they are not owning the OS itself, it's still an Android device. The OS is very much driven by Google. In fact it's quite interesting to consider that Meta failed to develop their own OS and that Google is shipping soon AndroidXR.

Honest question: what do you use instead? I've been trying to reduce my reliance on Amazon but often find that other stores are either a lot more expensive or so shady that I wouldn't trust them to actually send what I ordered.

Fortunately I've found some good stores for board games and home electronics / gaming / multimedia but often, when I just need some random thing like replacement pads for my headphones, it's hard to find a good source that isn't either Amazon or Ali Express.

So first of all - I am in the EU and I live in a big city.

The most important step is to question your own consume. Often I don't need a specific thing, or I do not need it within 3 days. But let's assume I really want that thing.

It is hard to tell what I use instead, because there is no direct replacement for Amazon, but many smaller vendors instead, like how a market is supposed to work, if not controlled by US megacorps.

In general, for all the small tech stuff, in 95% of the cases the vendor on Amazon is also on eBay. Sometimes it costs some bucks more, but I am willing to pay that because subsidies due to people pissing in bottles needs to be compensated.

For computer stuff there is always some shop, I just use geizhals to find the cheapest option (which often is not Amazon). Mind factory comes to my mind.

For clothes I go to town, or order them in their online shops if I know exactly what size I need.

Books, I order them online in my local book store, and then I get get them the next day there.

Let me know what product interests you and I try to answer.. But in general I am trying to limit my consumption and ask myself 3 times if I really need something.

The major problems for me are small accessories for electronics like SD cards, cables and so on. I could go to Müller or MediaMarkt but especially for those smaller items, they often only have stuff from HAMA which is insultingly expensive for the quality they offer. Specialized online stores like Reichelt may have a cheaper option but when my 5€ cable comes with 6€ of shipping costs on top, I'm back to square one. The optimal solution would be to wait until there are multiple things that I need to spread the shipping costs over multiple products but when something breaks and I need a replacement, that's often not an option.

Another point are niche ingredients for international cooking that I can't get at any of the local Asian or Middle-Eastern supermarkets.

So yeah, ebay, probably...

MediaMarkt is ripoff. So yep, eBay. Bought several SD cards and cables there this year. I can really recommend taking a look. It's a bit of extra effort and sometimes maybe a couple of bucks more, but that's a price I am willing to pay for ditching amazon.

As an example, the last time I bought an SD card it was 6,95€ for a San disk 32 Gb ultra

I haven’t bought anything from Amazon since last November and I live in a small city. I’m also not shopping at Target or Walmart which also severely reduces options.

For that weird one-off stuff I’ve been using eBay. I hadn’t used eBay for probably 2 decades and in my mind it was still an online auction house, but a friend convinced me to give it a chance. He sells on eBay and assured me when there is a dispute they always side with the buyer and most things can just be bought outright. And a lot of the stuff in brand new.

I’ve also bought a couple things direct from the manufacturer that I normally would have previously gone to Amazon for. It’s more expensive but not so much so that it bugs me more than giving the money to Bezos would.

Actually eBay is quiet shitty as auction house nowadays. It is a lot if effort setting all the filters and they reset every time you do a new search. Fixed price and global shipment is standard, you really need to watch closely to not buy a product from China. I find eBay very inconvenient for what I used it in 2010 for.

I haven’t used it for any auctions since coming back to it after 20 years, just “buy now”. And yes, you have to be carful you’re not buying from China. I found the same issue with Amazon, particularly when buying less mainstream things.

I’m open to suggestions but in my particular situation, it’s the best option I’ve found.

It was always rubbish, it just became a fad for some reason, and with that they became a semi monopoly for some forms of goods.
I used Amazon once more tan 20 years ago, then I found that local dealers that actually paid taxes and respected workers rights here, they were just as cheap or very very close, and had just as fast delivery, and way better service.

Back in the day, there was “no way I’m sticking my credit card numbers into the internet.” People were MORE likely to give out credit card numbers over the phone, or write them down on a piece of paper ripped out of a magazine and mail it. Crazy, I know, but true.

Amazon was cool because it became the first big digital store. You could order all kinds of quality stuff, from the comfort of your house, CHEAPLY, and then they shipped it to your doorstep. If you joined prime - they delivered in two days. Full stop. Oh - it didn’t make it there in two days? Here’s compensation.

Let’s compare that to today:
1) quality? No - now it’s endless cheap crap from resellers an middleman vultures
2) from the comfort of your own home? Everyone can do that today
3) cheap? Nope - amazon is now almost always either more expensive or the same exact price as buying from the manufacturer directly.
4) Shipped to your doorstep in two days? Amazon falls down on this all the time now. Sometimes the thing shows up in hours if it’s stored locally, other times it takes weeks.

Amazon lost its way. We ditched our decades old membership and shopping habits. We save more money, stuff gets delivered faster, we don’t worry about getting knockoff crap, and cutting Amazon out of our lives has been a total non issue. (Surprisingly - I thought it would be much more inconvenient than it’s been)

We only use Amazon when its the only fulfillment option available. What I've noticed about amazon over the last 5+ years is that it feels like cable/broadcast TV ads do now.

In the rare case I end up watching TV with ads I find them so obnoxious and/or off-putting that I can't believe they actually sell anything. If anything they put me off the product. And that's how Amazon feels too.

The rape trial that shocked the world will be discussed in a French court once again, after one of the men convicted of raping Gisele Pelicot appealed, insisting that he is "not a rapist."

One of the men found guilty of sexually abusing Gisele Pelicot is set to appear in court in the southern French city of Nimes.

Husamettin D. was sentenced to nine years in prison for rape. He claims that Pelicot's then-husband, Dominique, led him to believe that she had consented.

The 44-year-old argues he is innocent, with his legal team appealing both his conviction and the sentence. He visited the Pelicot home once in 2019.

He is one of 17 men who appealed their conviction and the last one still maintaining his innocence.

In total, 51 men were convicted in the trial that sent waves all around the world.

Dominique Pelicot was sentenced to 20 years in jail for drugging his wife and recruiting dozens of strangers to abuse her over almost a decade.

MY soul chose to indulge in being karma's punching-bag, because it didn't understand that consequences are real.

IT assumed that it could make-believe away everything, or ignore-away everything: inexperience/ignorance is terrible management substitute-for-competence, right?

& I've been paying the price for it, for more than 1/2 of a century ( including 7+y of outright homelessness ).

& .. looking around this world .. my experience isn't significantly better, or worse, than global-average, is it?

ALL these continuums/souls are getting themselves caught in incarnations, while making-believing that "consequences aren't real: they can't hurt me-the-soul" .. but the consequences crush/destroy the someones, the lives, that unconscious-souls get caught in..

It isn't the SurfaceMinds ( minds which dissipate every few hours ) which are the problem.

The 2 minds underlying SurfaceMind are the problem: unconscious-LifeMind ( begins forming in conception, & shatters in death ), & underlying-that is unconscious-Continuum/Soul.

Trying to make one's unconscious-LifeMind notice/learn anything .. is like being made of blown-dust & trying to MAKE bedrock understand something it WON'T know or understand..

Years/decades of persistence in right-direction can make some learning happen, in the more-fundamental-layer-of-mind.

But nothing less than that works.

Certainly not the making-believing or pretence pushed by our culture of "entertainment" brainwashing..

All this extra-context is simply to try to communicate that *the problem isn't you, or me, or any-particular-individual,

.. it is unconscious-LifeMind, and it is humankind's-collective-unconscious-LifeMind-ignorance, which is indellible-at-individual-human-scale* and digging-in against that is the REAL context, see?

And THAT is why I'm asking you to intentionally ask & get all the real support you need.

In my life nobody can provide the support that I need:

prejudices has annihilated those bridges: there's no human-closeness left, no such category of trust, of that kind: I do it alone or die having failed to do it.

Could have been worse, he's not outright fascist; the SPD (far-right) and STAČILO! (tankies) movements want to leave NATO and EU. Like last time, the tankies did not make it into Parliament but the far-right is sizeable (16). Still, it will not be enough for majority (101) with Babiš (80), they will also need to appease Motorists (13). So I guess we'll have lots of populism, corruption, continued coal mining and stalling public transit investments.

The previous cabinet (center-right SPOLU that's similar to US Democrats, plus Pirates and Mayors) only has 92 in total now because they inherited an economic crisis in 2021 after Babiš's irresponsible pandemic response (they handled it well but failed to connect with people, and they kept supporting Israel). Does this remind you of a certain American country? At least they managed to get some things done on issues I care about (no more forced castration for legal sex change, investment into 21ˢᵗ century rail infrastracture) and budgeted responsibly.

When my partner "came out" to me, they didn't really do much of anything to follow through and begin making changes. I think because there's so much to do and no guide to do it.

So one day we were at a loose end I said "let's just goto the hair dresser and you can ask them for an appropriate haircut"

And so our very lovely hairdresser became the 2nd person to learn their real name and did a fantastic job sorting out an appropriate hairstyle. Something that is still important to my partner now.

From being the first person they told about their transition IRL, to all the little times I've nudged and supported them taking the next step, it's been a joy and privilege to do that. I feel blessed by their trust and by being close to such beautiful change towards authenticity.

Honestly, no - not in a direct fight. The wolves will eat whole-hog anyone with actual concern for other people. The quickest & most effective way to win against them, IMHO, is to let them have the power they want over their own base, and let that base see for themselves how the right feasts upon others indiscriminately - including upon on its own. Chinese factory staff assembling Apple’s latest iPhone continue to face precarious conditions, working many hours of overtime, suffering wage delays and discrimination against ethnic minorities, according to a leading labour rights group.
China Labor Watch (CLW) found that more than half of the estimated 200,000 workers employed during peak season at the world’s largest iPhone factory run by Foxconn in Zhengzhou are seasonal staff known as “dispatch workers”. This is despite a Chinese law capping the use of such staff at 10 per cent of a company’s workforce.
US-based CLW, which specialises in undercover investigations of Chinese factories, also found that dispatch workers faced staggered payment schedules that withhold part of their wages to deter them from quitting during peak production.
These staff were not entitled to the same benefits as full-time employees, such as paid sick leave, paid holiday and social insurance that includes medical coverage and pension contributions. CLW also claimed that there is systematic discrimination in hiring certain ethnic minorities and pregnant women.

Maybe 20 years ago, but that hasn't been the case for awhile now. There's a reason textile manufacturing moved most of their operations to countries like Bangladesh where you can shove 1000 workers and 1000 sewing machines into an un-airconditioned building, and then skip town instead of paying your workers.

Manufacturing stays here because while unskilled labor is only very cheap instead of dirt cheap, China has cheaper inputs like electricity, materials, machinery, skilled labor, and access to the Chinese market.

Of course they still have a long way to go, but a median wage of 124K RMB (17K USD) isn't terrible when you can get a good meal for 10 RMB and rent a 2bd in most cities that aren't Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo.

The report is about much more than 'only' the pay, but as you mention it: We must distinguish per capita disposable income from GDP per capita. GDP per capita calculates the total value of all goods and services produced in a country divided by the population, which doesn't reflect the income available to individual citizens and households.

For this reason we must look at the disposable income per capita, which measures the amount of money people can actually use, and we see a completely different picture.

In 2024, China’s national per capita disposable income reached RMB 41,314 (US$5,800 at the current rate), according to China's National Bureau of Statistics. Income disparities between urban and rural areas remain significant as already mentioned.

If it's true that you can "rent a 2bd in most cities that aren’t Beijing and Shanghai for 2000RMB/mo", you'd spend half of your disposable income on the rent (except in cities like Beijing and Shanghai, where you spend considerably more).

It is noteworthy that this data comes from official Chinese sources.

But again, the linked report clearly suggests that workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, are work overly long hours, and things like these. It's a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.

Median disposable income in Canada is CAD $39K. Avg rent is $2.1K. That's 64% of disposable income. Disposable income is a nice metric but it requires price levels to be useful.

I provided a very quick back-of-the-napkin context for how things look in Canada while taking a break from work. If I had more time I would have ideally found median for both. Do you honestly think median and average rent in this context are so wildly differrnt to make the conparison "not make sense?" Do you think the median rent would be so much lower (or higher) than 64% of disposable income as to make the picture invalid?

These are measures. What I 'think' they are is simply irrelevant.

But I think the linked report has nothing to do with this. It clearly suggests that Chinese workers suffer wage delays, discrimination of minorities, work overly long hours, and things like that. It’s a devastating report on both Chinese working conditions and a U.S. company exploiting the local policy.

I think there's a good reason for them to present realistic numbers for wages, especially in manufacturing. It's because western companies need this data when they decide whether to move production to China. If the bean counters made projections based on a set of numbers, then in reality thigs were significantly different, that would be a problem. If PRC inflated say the wage numbers, it would have a negative effect on offshoring, fewer firms would decide to do the move or would move elsewhere. That's why I think these topline numbers are likely not far from reality.

This is what I can't understand about Germany's position. I know they spend a lot of time teaching their youth about the holocaust, yet they seem to have completely missed the the point.

It is 100% overly wealthy, selfish people and the service workers they’ve trapped with them.

Spending thousands on gear, then going all the way to Nepal (a less developed country) to climb a mountain is the very definition of “overly wealthy.”

Nothing says “I don’t care about anyone else” like insisting on being the millionth tough guy to climb a mountain, just to say they did.

I think this should be part of the risk. Leave them up there and clean the bodies up when it thaws.

Come on with those absolutes… first hit on google for a commercial top of the line expedition ranges between 100k for the crazy short-track « climb the whole thing » to a relatively affordable 3k to go to the base camp…. Which is less than a whole lot of families apparently spend on vacation.
Additionally those are very important source of revenues for Nepalis…

I almost said computer but realized that couldn't be assumed. Fine, a phone is closer to a necessity.

There is still basically no difference between this and any other hobby that involves something manufactured by people in poor countries other than proximity to the people doing the labor. You are just mad that people who have either a bit or a lot more money for their hobbies have a hobby that doesn't appeal to you personally.

Tourism is very much a colonial economy when there is income inequity. I am sorry that your adopted brother depends on tourists for income, but that does not justify the inequity.

If you were to hire a Sherpa in the Alps or Canada, you'd be paying a hell of a lot more for the privilege of the climb. So tell us again why these rich folks get away with paying so little...

When you make the argument that the locals depend on the income, you are also implying that it's OK the locals earn so little without these rich folks.

Nope, I’m not saying any of that. I’m just happy that he -specifically he who I very much know- can eat because some tourists pay him for his art. So in that frame it is not all negative.
Whatever the price is really, he comes from living in a monastery in India to going back to his home country and being able to sustain himself with that money.
System is not perfect but at least he eats.

If you worry about that you’ll have to consider all other inequalities in manufacturing as well… or in IT…. So why just that one example ?

Id like to sneak in and offer an opposing argument here. I see what you are saying, but imagine if someone said poachers in Africa depend on the revenue from selling illegal wildlife goods. The idea is that even if its a reality now, it really isn't a good one, and if they COULD work away from it, it'd likely be better overall.

Money alone won't get you up there. No matter how many Sherpa's you hire, it's brutal. People spends weeks and weeks at the various base camps just to acclimate, and that does nothing to add to their strength.

And yes they leave literal shit and O2 bottles. Carrying a few extra pounds on the way down could kill you. You have to give it nearly all you got to summit, then the descent is even more dangerous.

We could argue shutting down the mountain, but I've never heard of a solution to remove the trash. You have to carry it up, you can't carry it down.

While it's tragic that the mountain is going to add to its death toll on this, the idea of people queued up on the world's tallest peak just for limited-time virtual merch, made me chuckle a bit.

After that all those years ago, I'm feel like stunts like that are far more plausible than ever.
