Breakthrough in Huntington’s disease treatment shows unprecedented results for patients

A new treatment that proves to slow the progression of Huntington’s disease marks a breakthrough for a condition that has long been considered untreatable. Huntington’s is a rare, inherited neurodegenerative disorder that gradually deteriorates a person’s physical and mental abilities, often leading to death within 10 to 30 years of onset. Until now, treatments have only managed symptoms, rather than altering the disease’s course.

The research team, including Sung, tested a new treatment called AMT-130 on people who were in the early stages of HD. The treatment works by halting the part of the body’s gene production responsible for producing the toxic huntingtin protein. By targeting the messenger RNA that carries instructions from DNA to produce this protein, AMT-130 prevents its formation without altering the DNA itself — a key safety advantage over other genetic therapies.

After three years, those who received the higher dose showed a 75 percent slower disease progression compared to those who did not receive the treatment. The treatment helped trial participants maintain more of their movement, thinking and daily functioning abilities without causing significant side effects.

Revealed: how a Russian fight club expanded into the US with the help of American neo-Nazis

A Russian street fighting organization that has raised money for Moscow’s illegal invasion of Ukraine expanded into the US earlier this year with the help of prominent American white supremacists from the extremist neo-Nazi “active club” movement and the neo-fascist organization Patriot Front, the Guardian can reveal.

The group, known as Streets Fight Club (SFC), also promoted violent, for-profit combat events featuring white nationalist extremists held in the US south to tens of thousands of followers on Instagram and YouTube.

SFC stages bareknuckle brawls throughout the year, typically in Europe. Events are often held at abandoned sites, where improvised fight cages are set up using barricade fencing.

A classified network of SpaceX satellites is emitting a mysterious signal

Satellites associated with the Starshield satellite network appear to be transmitting to the Earth's surface on frequencies normally used for doing the exact opposite: sending commands from Earth to satellites in space. The use of those frequencies to "downlink" data runs counter to standards set by the International Telecommunication Union, a United Nations agency that seeks to coordinate the use of radio spectrum globally.

Starshield's unusual transmissions have the potential to interfere with other scientific and commercial satellites, warns Scott Tilley, an amateur satellite tracker in Canada who first spotted the signals.

"Nearby satellites could receive radio-frequency interference and could perhaps not respond properly to commands — or ignore commands — from Earth," he told NPR.

From Sabra and Shatila to Gaza: The Vicious Cycle of US-Israeli 'Peace' Ploys

The history of Zionism is fundamentally one of deception. This assertion is critically relevant today, as it contextualizes the so-called ‘Trump Gaza proposal,’ which appears to be little more than a veiled strategy to defeat the Palestinians and facilitate the ethnic cleansing of a significant portion of Gaza’s population.

[Critique Wanted (sorta)] Help editing images in darktable

Hello all

I was hoping to get some advice on editing these two photos I took with my OM-1 in hi-res mode. I have pretty limited experience editing in darktable (or editing digital files, at all. in fact, I pretty much suck lol) , and find myself getting burnt out during editing sessions where ill think my image looks good, ill step away, come back and think its not great.

In this case, I'm having trouble getting my edited raw images to look as good (here, in this case, I'm mostly talking sharpness) as the OOC jpeg. I guess Olympus does quite a bit of sharpening? I'm a bit more confident in my colorgrading/saturation/exposure adjustments but for these particular images I feel like I could work on them forever and never be satisfied.

Was wondering if I could get some advice on these images. I've included the raw files, the OOC jpegs, and my lightly edited images in this album. I was hoping to see if anyone would be willing to do a quick edit themselves to see if they are able to make a good image out of these rawfiles, but that's quite a bit of work, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

uk just needs to ban 4chan at the dns level and do humanity a favor
in reply to katy ✨

Yeah, that worked great when the UK and others tried it with thepiratebay
in reply to katy ✨

How?

Reddit, Lemmy and Discord the bad actors now, people here are the ones calling for 'raids' on websites, to dox people, to ruins anonymous internet users lives.

4chan is tame by comparison.

in reply to katy ✨

Türkish guy here: we've had DNS-level bans for more than 15 years. They are very easy to work around.
in reply to herseycokguzelolacak

From my perspective more damage has been wrought to British culture by the Disneyification of Winnie-the-Pooh (big fan of EH Shephard here) than by 4Chan.

This is definitely a more important point then the existence of websites.

It was never a Gaza 'war'. The 'ceasefire' is a lie cut from the same cloth

Trump’s ‘peace plan’ is doomed. No people in history has ever resigned itself to permanent servitude and oppression. The Palestinians will prove no different.

The Capitalist Vision of Artificial Intelligence: Profit, Power, and Control

Trump’s Shadow President, Russell Vought

But, according to court records, interviews and other accounts from people close to Vought, DOGE’s efforts were guided, more than was previously known, by the OMB director. Musk bragged about “feeding USAID into the wood chipper,” but the details of the agency’s downsizing were ironed out by Vought’s office. When DOGE took aim at obscure quasi-government nonprofits, such as the United States Institute of Peace, OMB veterans saw Vought’s influence at work. “I can’t imagine that the DOGE team knew to target all these little parts of the government without Russ pointing them there,” the former OMB branch chief told me. Vought also orchestrated DOGE’s hostile takeover of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, crippling a regulator that Republicans had hoped to shutter during Trump’s first term. “DOGE is underneath the OMB,” Michelle Martin, an official with Citizens for Renewing America, a grassroots group founded by Vought, said in May, according to a video of her remarks. “Honestly, a lot of what Elon began pinpointing ... was at the direction of Russ.”

US commander overseeing fatal strikes against alleged drug boats off Venezuela will retire

The Navy admiral who oversees military operations in the region where U.S. forces have been attacking alleged drug boats off Venezuela will retire in December, he and the Defense Secretary announced Thursday.

Adm. Alvin Holsey became the leader of U.S. Southern Command only in November, overseeing an area that encompasses the Caribbean Sea and waters off South America. These types of postings typically last between three and four years.

The news of Holsey’s upcoming retirement comes two days after the U.S. military’s fifth deadly strike in the Caribbean against a small boat accused of carrying drugs. The Trump administration has asserted it’s treating alleged drug traffickers as unlawful combatants who must be met with military force.

Is it possible to just run a pirate video streaming site from Kodi?

I've always felt like the whole docker/jellyfin/plex/loads-of-other-apps stuff is way too overboard just to do a bit of pirating, so I usually just hop on one of the movie/show or anime streaming sites with uBlock Origin installed and watch that way.

Currently I'm looking at what I can setup in the living room, and was thinking of just using an old PC with a wireless keyboard. I would like to use a media center type interface, but I've never actually used Kodi before. Would I be able to just use Kodi to stream from those kinds of services?

Searches so far show that everyone apparently uses Kodi with something called Real Debrid, which I have zero interest in.

in reply to AnimalsDream

Way in the past, when I had time to monitor torrents and manage file structures, I used to cultivate a shared network folder and link XBMC/Kodi to it. Nowadays it is dead simple to just set it all up in containers and check in on it periodically.
in reply to AnimalsDream

It is, i used to do it for my household, but the problem is that those websites that host pirated content tend to do everything they can to prevent direct streaming outside of their own ad filled websites and the adons for kodi that interface with them tend to get abandoned or shut down after a few months, also Without real debrid they are practically useless.

Its actually way easier and less maintenance to just setup the arrs + jellyfin. There is good reason its become so much more common among pirates these days, it might seem overboard but i once you get past the intial setup its super convient.

Hackers Dox Hundreds of DHS, ICE, FBI, and DOJ Officials

A group of hackers from the Com, a loose-knit community behind some of the most significant data breaches in recent years, have posted the names and personal information of hundreds of government officials, including people working for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“I want my MONEY MEXICO,” a user of the Scattered LAPSUS$ Hunters Telegram channel, which is a combination of a series of other hacking group names associated with the Com, posted on Thursday. The message was referencing a claim from the DHS that Mexican cartels have begun offering thousands of dollars for doxing agents. The U.S. government has not provided any evidence for this claim.

UK Home Office loses bid to block Palestine Action from challenging ban as terror group

The Court of Appeal on Friday dismissed the government's attempt to stop the judicial review of its decision to ban the group.

During the judgement, four judges, including the Lady Chief Justice, also granted Palestine Action's co-founder, Huda Ammori, two further grounds to challenge the ban, that were previously rejected.

These grounds include that the Home Secretary, at the time, failed to consider relevant information or/and considered irrelevant information, and that she failed to follow her published policy "which prescribes that certain factors may be taken into account".

Following Friday's judgement, Ammori praised the decision and described it as an "authoritarian ban" that must be opposed.

Marxists have always opposed liberalism, liberalism is pro-capitalism and anti-socialist and Marxism is anti-capitalist and pro-socialist. Liberalism is extreme though, as Edie pointed out, just in a horrible direction.

Most of the hardliner Ukrainian nationalists and mercenaries have better means to stay out of harm's way than them, as conscripts will be droned by Ukraine if they attempt surrender - although things are worse for mercs lately. Look around. Videos like that aren't even being posted unless they demonstrate a notable battlefield interaction e.g. Bradleys being smoked or other materiel loss. Do you see gore? It's funny how you can tell which insults have made liberals the most sore in the past. You would never call your despised Putler an Uncle Tom if not for the psychic wound left from that term being levied at Obama and others like him.

That's the typical Timothy Snyder/Hannah Arendt breakdown of authoritarianism and fascism, yes, which is always problematic as these definitions could easily apply to any western leader or the subimperialist regimes they prop up, your entire logic is inconsistent. But of course you know that. Poinring out the inconsistencies in your irrational beliefs would be a waste of time, not only because of your belligerence, but because fascism can only coherently analyzed historically.

Spit On, Sworn At, and Undeterred: What It’s Like to Own a Cybertruck

Aside from a MAGA hat, there is likely no object that feels more emblematic of US president Donald Trump’s return to the White House than the Tesla Cybertruck. The blunt angles and steel doors look futuristic, for sure, but only if the future looks a lot like RoboCop. To some, it’s a metallic status symbol. To others, it’s fascism on wheels. Either way, heads turn.

Cybertruck owners see things differently. “To me, it's just a vehicle that I love,” says Andrew Castillo, a stock trader from Los Angeles. “It has no political affiliations at all to me.”

We’re standing in the parking lot of McCormick's Palm Springs Classic Car Auctions. All around us, a dozen Cybertruck owners—and their cars—bake in the 100 degree heat. They’ve arrived for a meetup organized by Michael Goldman, who runs the 53,000-person Facebook group Cybertruck Owners Only. Though suspicious of the media, they’re eager to set the record straight about the car that they love. WIRED is here to learn how it feels to be out in public in such a politically charged vehicle. Has the past year or so changed anyone’s minds about owning the truck? Do owners like the attention—or are they adding bumper stickers decrying Elon Musk?

As we’re talking, a woman drives by in a small sedan. “Your cars are fucking ugly!” she screams before peeling off. Castillo smiles. “Some people just aren’t playing with a full deck of cards,” he says serenely.

This is what happens with fewer competition and the iPhone stagnating. Windows Mobile had it succeeded even marginally, Google wouldn't be doing this.

Replace Windows Mobile with Blackberry, Meego, etc... The competition doesn't need to be open, they just need to motivate Google to be open.

The competition doesn’t need to be open, they just need to motivate Google to be open.

...but could that actually happen? I'm not sure what WOULD motivate Google to be open. Even if there were three or four more major mobile players (all with equal market share), and Google had the only platform that allowed unblessed software to be installed, I'm not sure that would pressure Google to continue to be "the open choice", but more likely to take this same action as "the odd man out".

At a fundamental level, there is an illusion/concept planted in the human mind that "force answers everything", and when they run out of ideas (or all the ideas that they have would require too much [re]work to their liking) the tendency is to fall back onto "just use force" as an easy "solution".

DC woman accused of assaulting agent during ICE encounter found not guilty

Prosecutor Jeanine Pirro failed to secure a felony indictment against the woman three times, then lost a jury trial on a misdemeanor charge. Ouch.

A Washington, D.C., woman accused of assaulting a federal agent was found not guilty by a jury on Thursday, the latest embarrassment for Jeanine Pirro, President Donald Trump's U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.

Prosecutors had alleged Sidney Lori Reid kicked a Federal Bureau of Investigation agent during an altercation outside the D.C. Jail in July. Reid had been filming Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers while they were detaining a man who'd just been released from the jail.

Pirro's office tried three times to indict Reid on a felony assault charge, but D.C. grand juries declined to return an indictment each time --- a highly unusual occurrence that suggested the flimsiness of the government's case.

After whiffing on the felony counts, prosecutors ended up trying Reid on a misdemeanor charge of assaulting or impeding a federal agent --- but they couldn't even win that case. The jury deliberated for less than two hours on Thursday before returning the verdict of not guilty, WUSA9 reported.
