The INTRUDER FARIDA McFadden

Wow, just wow! This is my new Freida favorite! I loved the storyline, the cabin in the woods setting, the POV of Ella/Casey chapters, and Freida's captive writing style which hooked me as I read this in less than 24 hours! I also love that Freida's sense of humor in her writing style is present even in a dark thriller! I downloaded it for free from here for anyone who wants to enjoy the book

Europe's plan to ditch US tech giants is built on open source - and it's gaining steam

cross-posted from: lemmy.ml/post/37846820

Europe is moving decisively away from U.S. tech giants toward open-source alternatives, driven by concerns over digital sovereignty and reliability of American companies[^1]. At the 2025 OpenInfra Summit Europe, industry leaders emphasized that this shift isn't about isolation but resilience.

"What we're really looking for is resilience. What we want for our countries, for our companies, for ourselves, is resilience in the face of unforeseen events in a fast-changing world. Open source allows us to be sovereign without being isolated," said OpenInfra Foundation general manager Thierry Carrez[^1].

This transition is already happening. The German state Schleswig-Holstein has replaced Microsoft Exchange and Outlook with open-source email solutions. Similar moves have been made by the Austrian military, Danish government organizations, and the French city of Lyon[^1].

European companies are stepping up to fill the gap with open-source alternatives, including:
- Deutsche Telekom's Open Telekom Cloud
- OVHcloud's sovereign cloud services
- STACKIT and VanillaCore's European-based offerings[^1]

The movement gained additional momentum when the European Commission appointed its first executive vice president for tech sovereignty, security, and democracy in 2024[^1].

Monochrome

In this statement piece, the artist is exploring the significance of objects as they relate to everyday life in the bleak mundanity of current century.

Pffft. No I don't. I just made that up.

Instead, I walked around and took a series of pictures of stereotypical street subjects favored by the types of people who go around spouting that only black and white images are inherently true art, and whose beanies are probably a bit too tight.

An incredible amount of information is lost if you shackle yourself to monochrome. If you insist on doing so for artsy-fartsy purposes, I advise you to think hard about why first rather than just because it's the done thing to do, as if it automatically adds profundity to a fossilized slice of light.

Luckily I didn't take these in black and white at all. I simply smashed them into greyscale using my editing software. The full color renditions are:

If zis were an American film I would have a gun, and perhaps do a little car chase. But it is French. Merde.

Why Are Some Democrats Backing MAGA's Anti-LGBTQ+ Censorship?

in reply to psychothumbs

People seem to be deluded into thinking the Democratic Party is a leftist or centrist organization. It is a rightwing corporate party riddled with racist, bigoted members. Look no further than the current leadership's anti-Mumdani, islamophobic rhetoric as proof they will throw anyone under the bus.

Ah, so similar to "clean coal"...

Carbon dioxide from Google’s power plant will be injected into the same geological storage formations already used by ADM’s ethanol facility. The site is the location of the first long-term CO2 storage well in the U.S.

Typically, around 2,000 metric tons of CO2 are sent into the well every day. But injections there were halted in 2024 when salty brine, which stores dissolved CO2 deep underground, was found to have migrated into “unauthorized zones,” according to the EPA. ADM said the leak was the result of corrosion at a monitoring well, E&E News reported, and they’ve since resumed injections.

A recent study of 13 CCS facilities representing 55% of all captured carbon shows that most aren’t living up to expectations.

I don’t think they care so much. They are talking about this stuff now or are very close to it.

JD Vance and Mike Johnson changing the narrative simply by trivializing it so the news completely ignores it, which they’re mostly doing already

Why some populist supporters want a strong-arm leader and others just want change

Authors:

  • Dr. Andrea Wagner | Associate Professor, Political Science, MacEwan University
  • Anna Brigevich | Associate Professor of European Studies, Norwegian University of Science and Technology

Excerpt:

The rise of populist leaders has drawn significant attention over the past two decades. Around the world, they have reshaped politics, from Donald Trump in the United States to Viktor Orbán in Hungary, Marine Le Pen in France, Giorgia Meloni in Italy, Santiago Abascal in Spain and Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil.

These leaders often rise to power by promising to speak for “the people” against the established “corrupt elites.” But our recent research shows that not all populist voters want the same things.

Our study examined public opinion data from nine countries to better understand what drives support for “strongman” populist leaders. The findings reveal that there are two very different kinds of populist attitudes, and the authoritarian variety most strongly predicts whether people will support a leader who is willing to bend the rules.

The article is short, and worth a read if you are curious about the results of the study or which country fell into which category. I started copying in more excerpts into this post and ended up copying 90% of the article.

Microsoft builds on Recall with Gaming Copilot — fails basic privacy tests

The software is labelled Beta, but is being pushed out to existing PCs anyway because.. well.. why not beta something in prod, it’s 2025 after all.

It appears in Game Bar, which is accessible from Windows Key + G. You may not have it yet as they are staging deployment. I’m not in Windows Insiders, but I have it installed — so it looks like the roll out is becoming wide. Note that I had uninstalled Copilot from my PC… but Gaming Copilot silently installed anyway.

It is similar to Recall, except not all the processing is done locally — it relies on the cloud. It screenshots gameplay, and then extracts elements of the screen (such as symbols and text) to work out what the player is doing. The idea is it can help you game, e.g. you can ask questions about what you’re doing in the game at a given moment.

Oversight Democrats’ Statement on New Tool to Document ICE Misconduct Across the Country as 170 American Citizens Illegally Detained by DHS

Today, a spokesperson for Oversight Democrats released the following statement on their investigation into the Department of Homeland Security after reports that at least 170 U.S. citizens have been unlawfully detained by the agency.

“Oversight Democrats have launched an investigation into the unlawful detention of American citizens by ICE and the Department of Homeland Security.

We’re establishing a misconduct tracker to systematically document abuse and civil rights violations by this administration — including cases where ICE has detained U.S. citizens and violated federal law. The tracker documents unconstitutional actions after they occur — it is not a live location tool. Creating this kind of investigatory record is routine and essential in any oversight inquiry.

We’re not tracking officers’ locations or putting anyone at risk. We’re publishing records to expose patterns of misconduct and to build a transparent public record for the American people. Our work will always protect the public, law enforcement, and the Constitution,” said Sara Guerrero, spokesperson for Oversight Democrats

Two federal judges say use of AI led to errors in US court rulings

Two federal judges admitted in response to an inquiry by U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley that members of their staff used artificial intelligence to help prepare recent court orders that Grassley called "error-ridden."

In letters released by Grassley's office on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Henry Wingate in Mississippi and U.S. District Judge Julien Xavier Neals in New Jersey said the decisions in the unrelated cases did not go through their chambers' typical review processes before they were issued.

Federal appellate court pauses Alligator Alcatraz lawsuit

In a two-sentence order on Wednesday, the Atlanta-based Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals granted a motion by federal government lawyers requesting that the appellate court pause proceedings in a case that halted a lower court decision shuttering operations at the controversial facility.

The federal lawyers in their motion stated that the shutdown prevented them from working. “The motion to stay the appeal is GRANTED. The movant is DIRECTED to promptly file a notice with the Court when the purpose for the stay is obviated,” the appellate court decision stated without any further explanation.

Odds are that you are a stockholder. Do you have a retirement? Or money in a bank?
in reply to teslasaur

Usually when people refer to the shareholders, they mean the 1% who own like half of all the wealth in the world.
in reply to teslasaur

I mean, I get what people mean when they say that, but it's ill-informed. This from a year ago:

The wealthiest 10% of Americans own 93% of stocks even with market participation at a record high

Meanwhile, the bottom 50% of Americans held just 1% of all stocks in the third quarter of 2023. -source

Retina e-paper promises screens 'visually indistinguishable from reality'

While most video screens such as those on our phones, TVs, and stadium jumbotrons seem to improve in resolution on a monthly basis, there has been an issue in improving the resolution of the tiny screens required in virtual reality apps. The problem is that as the screen moves closer to the human eye, the pixels that comprise it need to get smaller and smaller. Yet, if pixels get too small, their function starts to degrade and the image suffers. On a micro-LED screen, for example, pixels can't get much smaller than one micrometer wide before losing their ability to render a clear, crisp image.

So instead of relying on pixels, researchers from Chalmers University of Technology, the University of Gothenburg and Uppsala University in Sweden turned to a different technique. They created what they've termed "metapixels" out of tungsten oxide, a material that can switch from being an insulator to a metal based on its electrical state. The metapixels reflect light differently based on their size and how they're arranged, and can be manipulated by an electrical current. In a way, they function much like the pigments in bird's feathers, which can take on different colors based on how the light is hitting them.

The fact that metapixels don't need a light source eliminates the problems that video pixels take on when they get too small such as color bleeding and issues with uniformity.

This Texas Republican joins call with 12 other Republicans, to extend Obamacare subsidies

U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz, a McAllen Republican bracing for a tough reelection battle next year, has signed onto a letter with 12 others in her party that pushes House Speaker Mike Johnson to deal with looming cost increases for people insured through the Affordable Care Act.

“Allowing these tax credits to lapse without a clear path forward would risk real harm to those we represent,” the members wrote in the letter. “Nevertheless, we must chart a conservative path that protects working families in our districts across the country who rely on these credits.”

Top US prosecutor’s use of text message auto-delete could be illegal, watchdog groups warn

“The story about US attorney Lindsey Halligan’s use of Signal is deeply troubling. That she used the app apparently to discuss government business with a reporter, and configured her messages to disappear after eight hours, raises serious concerns that she is actively violating the Federal Records Act and the justice department’s own records-retention rules,” said Chioma Chukwu, executive director of American Oversight, a non-profit that frequently files lawsuits under the Freedom of Information Act to obtain federal records. The group submitted a public records request for Halligan’s Signal messages on Thursday.

“Even if portions of the conversation might contain information not typically subject to immediate public disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act, federal law still requires that such records be preserved for specified periods. Setting such communications to automatically delete is not only inconsistent with those obligations but patently unlawful,” she said. “If Halligan failed to ensure these Signal messages were preserved, her actions may have violated federal law and warrant investigation or corrective action by Attorney General Pam Bondi and Acting Archivist Marco Rubio.”

Is Your Medication Made in a Contaminated Factory? The FDA Won’t Tell You.

Instead of sharing the names of the medications coming from the errant foreign factories, the FDA routinely blacked them out, keeping the information secret from the public. That decision prevented doctors, pharmacists and patients from knowing whether the drugs they counted on were tainted by manufacturing failures — and potentially ineffective or unsafe.

“Is there some quality issue? Is there a greater difference in potency than expected? Is there a contaminant? I don’t know,” said Dr. Donna Kirchoff, a pediatrician in Oregon who has spent hours trying to find out where certain drugs were made for patients reporting unexplained reactions.
