Mihon, an aggregated manga reading app, issues a troubling warning they might shut down due to imitators that uses old Tachiyomi name
Citing Kotatsu's recent shut down, two of Mihon's devs said that misuse of Mihon’s name and branding by a group may endanger the project.

Hello everyone,With Kotatsu's recent shutdown and due to some ongoing issues over the years, I believe Mihon is also under threat. If you care about the project's future, please take a moment to read this message.
Who is behind the threat, and how?
A group going by iiTachiyomi and recently Miyomi has built a massive following by impersonating Tachiyomi (Mihon's predecessor) across various platform. They only rebranded to iiTachiyomi after years of request and only on platforms where they had a low following.Their blatant impersonation was one of the key reason behind the legal threat Tachiyomi received, which ultimately led to its shutdown. When we announced Mihon and exposed their behavior, iiTachiyomi promised to change their ways and not impersonate Mihon.
However, just months after Mihon launched, they resumed the same behavior by:
- Creating a new brand "Miyomi: Tachiyomi and Mihon community" to capitalize on Mihon's name
- Posting Mihon release notes and announcements without attribution
- Sharing updates of third-party extension repos without attribution
- Failing to clarify they are not the developers behind Mihon or those extensions
- Selling fake Mihon branded merchandise
Why does this threaten Mihon?
When P.CoK, the anti-piracy division of Kakao requested the removal of extensions, the Tachiyomi team complied. iiTachiyomi, however continued distributing them in a misleading way, causing confusion that escalated into legal pressure, which resulted in Tachiyomi shutting down.Now, they are doing the same thing with Mihon. Their misrepresentation and misuse of Mihon’s name, branding and work puts the project at risk, despite Mihon having already corrected the mistakes Tachiyomi made. It could also cause problems for other apps they promote.
What to do from now on
iiTachiyomi claims to serve the community, but their actions prove otherwise. To protect Mihon:
- Report iiTachiyomi or Miyomi pages that mislead users
- Correct people who confuse Mihon with iiTachiyomi or Miyomi
- Don’t share or support unofficial Mihon merchandise

This is selective enforcement of the most blatant and dangerous kind. But with this rise in retaliation from Israel against insurgent Jews within their borders, the narrative that Zionism and Israel has been pushing also begins to crack. When Jews become unsafe and unwelcome in Israel because of the Israeli government itself, the hypocrisy of Israel as a means for Jewish safety becomes further exposed. As Israel seeks to determine what Jews are politically aligned enough to engage in apartheid and Jewish supremacy, the world must take note that Jewish safety is not helped by Israel. To have effective action, you'd need to ban flying, ban cruise ships, ban private cars , ban petrol lawn equipment, ban recreational offroad vehicles, and recreational boating, ban meat eating pets, ban advertising, ban large houses, make being a billionaire a criminal offence etc
What most people mean is, slap up a couple solar panels and wind turbines and be done with it, which makes it worse, like using an aspirin for li g cancer and saying you've taken action and the problems solved !
Climate change is a demand side and human behavioural issue. To know what people really want, look to voting results, the rest of it is just bullshit.
IMO, interestingly, John Kenneth Galbraith touched on some of the reasons why in his Essay "The culture of contentment".
Don't let perfect get in the way of good.
The fact you say ban advertising probably shows you have gone a bit on the extreme side. Ban cruise ships? If you shift all recreational air travel to cruise travel, it'll offset a big chunk of impact. Remove petrol cars, private jets, electrify rail, improve public transport, invest in solar, wind, geothermal, tidal, nuclear, move consumption from red meat to white meat and you'll take a big chunk out of it, review, and take further steps if needed.
You seem to have swallowed the propaganda that consumers are responsible, not corporations. You let them off the hook and lost faith. What follows is resignation that we fail and no further steps. That's failure. We have to turn this ship around and the turning circle is big, let's start now and put a full lock on.
People used plastic straws, then they replaced with paper. Less single use plastic heading to landfill. Did consumer change anything? No. The law changed, companies adapted and people through the same actions cut environmental impact, if just by a small amount. Demand side argument does not stand well. It plays a factor, but it isn't the only one.

This has instructions where and how to get the extensions.
Although kotatsu will work for a bit I think it's best you start looking to migrate. But AFAIK there's no easy way to migrate unless you use other sites to track your reading progress and read lists.

Excellent app that improves on it’s predecessor in pretty much every way and I don’t even use it for piracy directly, I have a komga server that I read from (which tbf is filled with pirated content lmao though I do sometimes buy raws for niche stuff that’s not like chainsaw man).
Best client app around though, imo. Hope they navigate this successfully

in reply to dysprosium • • •Install komga, populate it with content (tip: use komf to automatically scrape sites like manga updates for content similar to how Jellyfin scrapes thetvdb), install the komga extension in mihon, point it at your server, profit.
It can even sync read history between the server and device if you configure it as a tracker as well.

The documentation isn’t super well done so you’ll have to make some leaps of faith but it’s pretty simple to figure out if you can figure out stuff like Jellyfin transcoding. The hardest part to set up is komf, which is optional (though it does make it look much nicer, like you’re browsing mangadex or whatever. Just make sure you don’t point komf at libraries with novels or western comic books or whatever bc it sucks at scraping those).
Also if you setup komf there’s a tampermonkey script that gives you gui control of the setting in the komga ui, very handy, but not strictly necessary

runtipi is an open source self hosting panel, like the ones ppl use to setup websites but its made for everyday ppl to setup and launch selfhosted apps.

The issue is that this increases the risk of Mihon getting shut down. Mihon devs don't make any money. Nobody profits of those downstream developers using the name of the original project to make money besides them. It'll just result in Mihon ceasing to exist.

Kakao likely doesn't care to differentiate between the original developers who don't make any money and the other entity using a similar name. They might even think both projects are from the same people. Thus the downstream making money threatens the existence of the original project.

In my opinion they should be safe legally because extensions are developed and distributed separately.
But I don't think companies like Kakao care for that. If they DMCA (or sue) Mihon devs, they'd have to de-anonymize themselves to properly fight the claim. If not, at least their website or source code repo could get taken down. If they've used Discord or a similar platform, chats could be used to identify them.
Ryujinx, a Nintendo Switch emulator, stopped development a year or so ago. As far as we know, it was developed cleanly without doing anything illegal. But Nintendo somehow found the developer (in Brazil I believe) and threatened them so they folded. Nintendo didn't even need to sue them.

But regardless kakao etc wouldn't care about that and I dont think hobby devs are going to challenge a C&D from a group of companies in court.

in reply to weirdo_from_space • • •It works fine with whatever. Western comics, novels, textbooks, whatever you want. Komga supports epub/pdf/cbz/zip/cbr etc.
It only becomes a pain if you want to automatically scrape metadata. This isn’t directly supported in komga but there’s another project, komf, that directly interfaces with the komga api and will scrape metadata providers to populate. I have multiple libraries because as far as I know this really only gracefully works with manga. It can sometimes work okay with western comics via scraping gocomics but it’s a crapshoot and if your library is large it’s definitely not a good idea to let it cook. It has no support for fiction/nonfiction stuff like goodreads or whatever so I have those in yet another library. I don’t know of a metadata provider for textbooks (Amazon? Libgen? Wikipedia?) so yet another.
But manga works great. And metadata aside all my books work and I can read them from whatever device, ereader, phone, laptop, etc. komga itself has a built in reader so if it has a browser I’m good but mihon or whatever tachiyomi fork I can use (like Tachimanga for iOS devices, though that has iap to unlock stuff like tracking and no ads (though adblocking works), gross) is preferable

I read some posts of both the accused and the accuser and can't find anything really bad.
For example the mentioned merch using the logo/brand from Mihon.
Yes, the kanji can't be "copyrighted" as it's like saying I own the letter "A" but the styling is obviously reminiscent of Tachiyomi/Mihon.
Besides that, as of right now I can't either sides.

And the manga sites themselves still being up that is.
