This title is really infuriating (from the Guardian, not the poster). Deforestation is causing the breakdown. Deforestation is not transformation of forests, it's just destruction.

in reply to silence7

First, this is a really well written article.

Second, this whole thing feels like a comedic farce. How does someone who clearly opposes their own party's agenda in it's entirely exist in this party? And why?

in reply to Andy

Because it's the pro-business wing of the party. They did a hostile takeover from the left, shunned unions and funded by wealthy folk. It's corruption of the party. Hence why they ditched Green New Deal and pushed back net zero targets. Return on investment.

What climate policies? We're way past that line, at this point.

Carbon capture is good to develop but Its no excuse to burn more fossil fuels. The tech is just not very good. A bunch of it was just proven to be fraudulent.

Cutting emissions and moving to solar and wind is viable. This policy is not based in reality.

in reply to silence7

The premise of the agreement is to increase oil and gas exports while attempting to meet the federal government’s climate targets. Carney’s government will exempt a possible pipeline project from the existing coastal oil tanker moratorium and emissions cap.

It's easy to meet the climate targets if you err... checks notes... exempt your actions from those targets. Well done everyone, problem solved.

Our politics are going the same way as the US. Our left-leaning politicians are very conservative and our conservatives are completely fucked.

The global economy has been set up around a growth imperative, a long-held commitment to continual economic expansion. This dynamic means that if the savings from a sustainability initiative are not strictly conserved or protected, then they are available to be re-spent to serve growth elsewhere. Despite the dedicated efforts of sustainability advocates, environmental stewardship is at perpetual risk of being undermined by the broader economy.

Revealed: EU’s €1.5bn promo scheme backing ‘sustainable’ meat and dairy

cross-posted from: lemmy.zip/post/53814898

The European Commission’s Enjoy, it’s from Europe programme has spent €1.5bn since 2017 on campaigns and events to “raise awareness of the efforts made by European farmers to produce quality products”, which frequently overstates the environmental benefits of eating meat and dairy.

A new DeSmog investigation, however, finds that the sustainability claims of the advertised produce are often misleading or false

Let’s Talk About Pork – a social media campaign running across Spain, France and Portugal – described emissions from pork-production as “absolutely fake”, while another falsely claimed that European poultry “helps preserve biodiversity”.

Meanwhile, a video-based campaign – which launched in October to promote European beef across Instagram, Facebook and TikTok – dubbed scientific claims about the environmental impact of livestock as “fake news”.

In 2025, the European Commission funded the campaigns “European Pork for a Greener World” and “Sustainable Beef” — the latter launched on World Environment Day — both designed to showcase livestock farming as a solution to climate and environmental challenges.

I wish we’d stop calling it climate change or global warming, that implies this is natural instead of big oil lying to us. Call it what it is, ”big oils climate plan”
in reply to silence7

That's just erosion. It's what happens when you build on coasts. Climate change is something else entirely.
in reply to StinkyFingerItchyBum

Warmer temperatures got ice melting. This raised sea level a bit, and increased the rate of erosion
in reply to silence7

Yes, but scale and diversity of phenomena are going to be spectacular. Building and losing shitty homes on coasts doesn't really do the topic justice.

in reply to StinkyFingerItchyBum

Storms increase in intensity and frequency with climate change, increasing rates of erosion. Most homes built to survive any weather except the worst storm of the past 10,000 years will not survive this century.

Labour seems to be doing its best impression of the US Democratic Party - that is, catering to corporate neoliberal interests and ignoring concerns and desires of normal goddamn citizens
in reply to gravitas_deficiency

Normal citizens cannot pay big bribes, offer lavish gifts or offer leadership roles in their companies after they retire.

They're only good for votes and you can create a campaign based on lies to get those.

It's an easy choice.

Teachers Union Escalates: General Strike in the Next 3 Days in Protest of Governments Failure to Meet Commitment

Anyone know the what commitment the palestinian government failed to meet?

!Palestine

sadanews.ps/en/news/253942.htm…

in reply to Ji Fu (Domestic Terrorist)

I mean, it's right there in the article:

The union stated in a press release that this escalation comes in light of the government's failure to disburse 500 shekels 10 days after the last government salary was issued, according to the agreement between the union and the government, in addition to the continued failure to pay salaries in full.

Though it's important to note that this is related to the West Bank PLO's Palestinian Authority, which holds no control of the Gaza strip which is governed by Hamas. The PNA is de facto a US-Israeli delegated government.

The dirty dozen: meet America’s top climate villains

Archive link:
archive.today/WKAfF

For too long, Americans were fed a false narrative that they should feel individually guilty about the climate crisis. The reality is that only a handful of powerful individuals bear the personal responsibility.
The nation’s worst polluters managed to evade accountability and scrutiny for decades as they helped the fossil fuel industry destroy our planet. The actions of these climate supervillains have affected millions of people, disproportionately hurting the vulnerable who have done the least to contribute to global emissions.
Working- and middle-class people must stop blaming themselves for the climate crisis. Instead, it’s time to band together to seek justice and hold these profiteers accountable. Only in calling out their power and culpability is it possible to reclaim the world that belongs to all of us, together.

in reply to silence7

You can’t address climate change without addressing military ventures. So I’m guessing no, you can’t. But it’s better than doing nothing, and it will apply pressure at least.

Right. Well, if Google says it is more secure, it must be true right?? I mean, it’s not remotely possible that Google has a reason to sell its vict- I mean, customers on its “security”.
