Trump Announces 5,000% Increase In All Numbers

Waymo Just Reprogrammed Its Robotaxis to Drive Less Safely

Besides convenience, one of the main benefits of self-driving cars is supposed to be safety.

Yet in a bizarre move, Waymo — whose self-driving cabs had been enjoying extraordinary safety metrics — has just taken steps to make its robotaxis more human-like, eroding the safety narrative that’s been central to the autonomous vehicle narrative.

Recent reporting by The Wall Street Journal observed a startling change in Waymos’ road etiquette, a new aggressive streak that would make a BMW driver blush. These include illegal U-turns, aggressive lane switching, rolling through cross walks, and running red lights.

I've always attributed that first quote to Machiavelli, but I can't any source for it either. Am I crazy?
in reply to RichardDegenne

The most credible source I find credits it to an article by German satirist and journalist, Kurt tucholsky who was supposedly quoting a French diplomat in 1925

oxfordreference.com/display/10…

in reply to saigot

Neat, now to learn German, find this book and find who he was supposedly quoting 😂

I love that the reference includes "see Stalin" without any further context. We've come full circle 😶

in reply to jankforlife

That fake Stalin quote isn't wrong tbh.

When the 6 people in the titan sub went missing, western govts moved heaven and earth to mount an extensive rescue operation despite knowing full well they most likely imploded.

Meanwhile, thousands die each year crossing the Mediterranean, and the same governments show nothing but contempt for them.

Keir Starmer Machine Ran a Secret Campaign to Demonetize Breitbart News and Other Opposition Outlets

From our vantage point looking across the pond at the United Kingdom, it truly does seem like the country decided to put an end to itself rather than allow public anger to be channeled by the one-time Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. With hindsight, and thanks to a new book by investigative journalist Paul Holden, author of today’s article below, we can now see clearly that the destruction of the Labour Party at the hands of a corporate, pro-Israel faction within the party was quite calculated and deliberate.

One piece of that strategy involved destroying the journalistic outlets that had organized themselves around the Corbynist energy, and to do so, the faction created astroturf organizations that claimed to be objectively rooting out “fake news.”

That faction eventually succeeded in electing Sir Keir Starmer prime minister, but doing so required political deception on a historic scale, resulting inevitably in his historic unpopularity. The right-wing takeover is not a matter of if, but when, and Starmer may wind up being the last Labour prime minister ever.

Along the way, Starmer’s faction also waged a secret war on conservative news outlets, as well. The censorship campaign targeting political opponents has morphed into an alarming attack on speech rights in the UK, focused on critics of Israel but broadly encompassing a wide range of expression.

Hind Rajab Foundation and human rights groups call for arrest of Ehud Olmert and Tzipi Livni

The Hind Rajab Foundation, the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights, and the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights have called on Canadian authorities to arrest former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni for war crimes ahead of a planned visit to Toronto, Canada.

The three organisations filed a complaint with the Canadian Department of Justice on Wednesday, detailing Olmert and Livni’s participation in war crimes and crimes against humanity during the 2008–2009 Gaza War.

The complaint urges an open investigation into their roles and a warrant for their arrest pursuant to Canada’s Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act and in compliance with the country's obligation under Article 146 of the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 to “seek out and prosecute” those reasonably suspected of grave breaches who set foot in Canada.

Raccoon goes on drunken rampage in Virginia liquor store and passes out on bathroom floor

ASHLAND, Va. (AP) — The masked burglar broke into the closed Virginia liquor store early on Saturday and hit the bottom shelf, where the scotch and whisky were stored. The bandit was something of a nocturnal menace: bottles were smashed, a ceiling tile collapsed and alcohol pooled on the floor.

The suspect acted like an animal because, in fact, he’s a raccoon.

On Saturday morning, an employee at the Ashland, Virginia-area liquor store found the trash panda passed out on the bathroom floor at the end of his drunken escapade.

Hillary Clinton says TikTok to blame for young Americans' pro-Palestine views.

Hillary Clinton is facing a deluge of criticism after stating that young Americans' growing support for Palestinians is influenced by "totally made-up" videos on TikTok and suggesting that American youth - including young Jews - "don't know history and don't understand" Israel's war on Gaza.

Speaking on Tuesday at a summit hosted by the right-wing Israeli paper Israel Hayom in New York City, the former Democratic presidential candidate expressed her concerns that “smart, well-educated young people” in America and around the world are getting a lot of their information, including about Israel and Palestine, from social media platforms like TikTok.

The former US secretary of state described it as "serious problem for democracy", remarking that when she attempted to have "reasonable discussions" with young people, it was challenging because “they did not know history, they had very little context, and what they were being told on social media was not just one-sided, it was pure propaganda".

not cheating. They post previous years exams and study guides for other chemistry subjects, theyre just lazy and havent done it yet for quant. Used only for studying as the real exam is completely new and random

Kokov noted that the EU leadership and the authorities of European countries are ready to spend billions from their budgets at the expense of their own people. "The clearest manifestation of their cynicism and hypocrisy is the financing of hostilities [in Ukraine] from the so-called European Peace Facility. At the same time, most of these funds end up in the accounts of affiliated companies and are simply plundered by the Ukrainian leadership, their cronies, and lobbyists from the European Union," he added.

one of the big takeaways is how well this conflict dispels any notion that europeans are somewhat better global citizens than americans or russian and it makes me wonder if the europeans are as distraught by this unmasking as americans are about our own unmasking with trump.

Like in pretty much all branches, the AI will eventually just be another tool. There still needs to be someone there to actually understand what the tool produces or it will result in catastrophees. You don't want to live in a building structurally designed by an AI without oversight nor fly in a plane programmed y an AI without oversight. Even for non-critical branches, there will be someone who directs the AI when it is e.g. composing the next shitty pop-song.
in reply to The Menemen

That's my view as well. There ultimately needs to be a human decision maker in the loop for any meaningful work to happen.

My disk is encrypted with LUKS and I wanted to make it auto-unlock using TPM.

I can't enter UEFI as I have fastboot enabled.

Could anyone help me please? 🫡

in reply to mypasswordis1234

Try disabling TPM in the bios/uefi by spamming DEL or ESC or F10 or F12 or F9 or ENTER
in reply to mypasswordis1234

Assuming this is an ATX or ITX PC, there's likely a way to reset UEFI so you can disable fastboot and change your settings, or at least boot from a recovery USB.

There's usually something like a button or 2 pins you can short on your motherboard to reset the settings. If your machine has dual BIOS, there will be a switch you can flip, though you'll probably need to update the UEFI again once you do that.

In the worst case (and this should work on almost any device), remove the CMOS battery, let the device sit for a few minutes, then put that battery in. That should clear all settings, including fastboot, and allow you to do recovery stuff - just make sure you fix the time before going on the internet.

Dutch regulator fines Unibet operator over player protection breaches

The Netherlands Gambling Authority (Ksa) has fined Optdeck Service Limited, the firm behind Unibet, €4m (~£3.51m) due to lapses in player protection duties from July-2022 until July-2024.

During that period, the Dutch gambling operator was required to implement protections for players to avoid excessive gambling and possible addiction. Ksa found failures in the operator’s monitoring system that allowed players to bet significant amounts without adequate interventions.

Michel Groothuizen, Chairman of the Ksa Board, noted: “When there are signs of excessive gambling behaviour, and someone wagers a large amount of money in a short period of time, a provider must promptly investigate the source of the money.

cannot get nut to load on reboot

I set up NUT on my server to monitor the status of 2 UPS's connected via USB, an eaton and a cyberpower. Nut fires up fine when I tell systemd to run all the pieces, but when I reboot, they are active but dead. they dont wake up and work until I manually load them again.

Theres no error anywhere. it just wont load itself on boot. why?

in reply to muusemuuse

1) You need to enable debug logging for NUT
2) Run systemctl --failed and see if you get anything there
3) Make sure you run the journal back all the way through boot and see if anything during boot time is obvious
4) Post your systems units here

Its common, it's called the refractory period. Younger men can sometimes go a couple minutes after a "reboot" but as you get older it takes longer and longer.

Is WordPress really trusteable?

It's listed on fedidb, but tosdr.org says You are being tracked via social media cookies/pixels on its points list.
in reply to Meow-Misfit

Wordpress the software is open source and isn't known to do anything shady. Wordpress.com the hosted CMS product uses tracking pixels.
in reply to Meow-Misfit

If you are trying to get the Wordpress software and install it on a server you own or web hosting account you pay for, yes.

If you're trying to do something else, like sign up for blog hosting from a privacy-respecting service provider without having to administer software yourself, then no. If you want recommendations for services like that, you should probably make a separate post asking for that, with as much detail about what you want to do and whether you're willing to pay for it as possible.

Edit: I see you did make such a post. If you're "not tech savvy" as your post says, I don't recommend administering Wordpress yourself. While it's something nearly anyone can learn if sufficiently motivated, it's much more effort for someone without a technical background.

Dumb question, but theoretically would it prevent Win exploits?

If I keep all incoming connections blocked, but also all outgoing connections blocked except my browser (no MS/Win service is communicating with anything online), would my attack surface be just the browser? So it wouldn't matter if Win is not updated?
in reply to PiraHxCx

I tried that, Windows FOR SOME FUCKING REASON keeps opening new holes in the firewall anyway.

The standard of living in the EU has dropped to a 40-year low compared to the US, among the reasons - the war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Israel launders its talking points through actress Noa Tishby and her foundation, a new report alleges, and may have violated FARA in the process. Trump admin threatens to cut off SNAP funding in blue states. ICE moves toward a “mega-warehouse” detention facility. Ex-Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández is released from prison after a Trump pardon. Centrist candidate Salvador Nasralla takes a slim lead in Honduras’ elections. U.S. Helicopters Used to Kill Civilians in Philippines, Locals Say

BAGGAO, Philippines—Black Hawk and ATAK helicopters swooped overhead and began firing into the mountains on an early February afternoon. Farmers tilling crops and tending their water buffalo ran for cover, taking shelter as the helicopters strafed the area. In a nearby town square, onlookers recorded with their phones, gasping as explosions ripped across the horizon. A Bell AH-1 Cobra attack helicopter later made rounds in the area, witnesses said, as soldiers sequestered farmers in shelters. They were kept from their farms for weeks as their harvest wilted and died.

It’s a scene that has become a monthly occurrence in the rural Philippines, beginning in early 2023 and continuing today. The military said it was pursuing rebels from the communist New People’s Army (NPA), a designated terrorist group active since 1969, when Jose Maria Sison founded the New People’s Army—a Maoist group waging an armed rebellion primarily based in rural areas. The military and NPA have been in conflict ever since, despite several rounds of failed peace talks, most recently in 2023.

But since 2023, the Philippine military has started using advanced attack helicopters and fighter jets supplied wholly, or in part, by the United States, in a rapid escalation of counterinsurgency operations that have tormented rural communities and led to numerous potential international humanitarian law violations that could trigger policies preventing U.S. military aid, according to dozens of witnesses and experts who spoke to Drop Site News.

Washington says it is arming its ally to defend against Chinese aggression, but the U.S.-manufactured helicopters have so far been used solely on domestic targets.

Quebec moves to expand secularism law, limit public prayer

The latest efforts to strengthen state secularism, dubbed "secularism 2.0", are part of a new bill introduced by the governing Coalition Avenir Quebec (CAQ) on Thursday, expanding on a 2019 religious symbols law that has fuelled fierce debate throughout the country.

The original law prevents judges, police officers, teachers and public servants from wearing symbols such as the kippah, turban or hijab while at work. The measures proposed in Bill 9 would:

  • extend the ban on wearing religious symbols to staff in subsidised daycares
  • bar "collective religious practices" like prayer in public spaces, such as parks, without prior authorisation from municipalities
  • prevent students and staff from wearing face coverings in daycare all the way through to post-secondary education

Roberge said the limits on public prayer were in reaction to recent protests in the province, where there has been debate over groups praying at pro-Palestinian demonstrations.

Germany launches initial operations of $4.2bn Israeli Arrow 3 missile system

The German military says the first elements of the Israeli system – radar, launchers and trained personnel – are now operational and can begin protective operations on a limited scale.

The system, which was procured in Israel, is reportedly a response to the threat posed by Russia and is expected to give Germany, for the first time, the ability to detect and intercept incoming ballistic missiles outside the Earth’s atmosphere.

The German armed forces are investing $4.2bn in the system, which is being deployed outside of Israel for the first time.

Do people with newer pcs prefer rolling release?

What exactly is the point of rolling release? My pc (well, the cpu) is 15 years old, I dont need bleeding edge updates. Or is it for security ?
in reply to bridgeenjoyer

I find that if my updates aren't frequent enough, then I just forget to do them altogether.
in reply to bridgeenjoyer

For software developers, it is better to have frequent tiny changes that can break things, than a big mess of breakage.

Do you hate distractions? Do you love steady improvements? This will affect your preference and judgement about rolling release.

The same can be true for desktop users. It also depends on how stable your software is. If you use mainly vim, dwm, and LaTeX, very few changes will break your flow.
