After Years of Controversy, the EU’s Chat Control Nears Its Final Hurdle: What to Know

Cross posted from: feddit.uk/post/40600495

After a years-long battle, the European Commission’s “Chat Control” plan, which would mandate mass scanning and other encryption-breaking measures, at last codifies agreement on a position within the Council of the EU, representing EU States. The good news is that the most controversial part, the forced requirement to scan encrypted messages, is out. The bad news is there’s more to it than that.

Chat Control has gone through several iterations since it was first introduced, with the EU Parliament backing a position that protects fundamental rights, while the Council of the EU spent many months pursuing an intrusive law-enforcement-focused approach. Many proposals earlier this year required the scanning and detection of illicit content on all services, including private messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal. This requirement would fundamentally break end-to-end encryption.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of digital rights groups, including European Digital Rights (EDRi), we won a significant improvement: the Council agreed on its position, which removed the requirement that forces providers to scan messages on their services. It also comes with strong language to protect encryption, which is good news for users.

The truth is, the fascists will always relentlessly find another crevice to stick their dirty hands into. A compromise with fascists isn't a win - it's a defeat with extra steps. Their so called "risk mitigation" is essentially another way in achieving the exact same thing from another angle.

That being said; the war continues. And while it is good that we avoided this policy - we'll never actually win until we change something.

Does Lemmy have the capacity to comply? Since it’s fedeverse based and mastodon already said it can’t, I assume lemmy is in the same situation.

Has anyone been able to play efootball 19 on linux?

Hey, back in the old days unfortunately, I used to use windows, a fit beautiful girl gave me the game.
I would appreciate if there's any tricks to get game to work on linux

I use Bottles for windows games that I don't have on steam or GOG.

Are you having any specific problems running the game? I've run various efootball titles without issue on linux. I tend to use lutris for non-steam games, but bottles should do the same job, as another poster said.

Israel remains in Eurovision

Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia will boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest, after Israel was allowed to compete.

They were among a number of countries who had called for Israel to be excluded over the humanitarian toll of the war in Gaza, and accusations of unfair voting practices.

Despite calls for a vote on Israel's participation, members instead approved a new set of rules intended to protect the integrity of the contest.

Ireland's national broadcaster RTE said it felt that its "participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk."

In a statement, Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said that "participation under the current circumstances is incompatible with the public values that are essential to us".

Spanish broadcaster RTVE added: "The board of directors of RTVE agreed last September that Spain would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel was part of it."

"This withdrawal also means that RTVE will not broadcast the Eurovision 2026 final... nor the preliminary semi-finals."

Kagan warns constitutional "violation" in Supreme Court's Texas map ruling

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan warned that the Supreme Court's decision in the Texas redistricting case will lead to a "violation of the Constitution" of voter rights.

The Supreme Court issued an unsigned decision in favor of freezing the initial 2-1 U.S. federal court ruling against Texas Governor Greg Abbott's proposed redistricting map, a stay that could help Republicans pick up five additional U.S. House seats in next year's midterms.

"This Court’s stay ensures that many Texas citizens, for no good reason, will be placed in electoral districts because of their race," Kagan wrote in her dissent. "And that result, as this Court has pronounced year in and year out, is a violation of the Constitution."

Theses days I use Waypipe and WPRS

yeah i always do this with tigervnc server on X11. create a vncpasswd file and place xinitrc on ~/.vnc/xstartup, then run vncserver :1 to create X11 display :1 and vnc server on port 5901. if you want to start vnc on a (physical) session already running, you can run x0vncserver. there's also x11vnc but x0vncserver feels much faster for me.

China pledges $100m for Gaza as Israeli siege continues to devastate enclave

Also important to note Hamas thanked the PRC and President Xi "as an extension of China’s historic positions supporting the rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to freedom, independence, and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital."

A bit weird coming from China when you know what they did to Muslims in their own country...
in reply to VeryInterestingTable

Not at all wierd, China has been a strong supporter of Palestinian liberation for over half a century, and Muslims in China are quite happy. I'm assuming you're referring to the western allegations of genocide in Xinjiang, though there's pretty much no actual evidence for it. The best and most comprehensive resource I have seen so far is Qiao Collective's Xinjiang: A Resource and Report Compilation. Qiao Collective is explicitly pro-PRC, but this is an extremely comprehensive write-up of the entire background of the events, the timeline of reports, and real and fake claims.

I also recommend reading the UN report and China's response to it. These are the most relevant accusations and responses without delving into straight up fantasy like Adrian Zenz, professional propagandist for the Victims of Communism Foundation, does.

Tourists go to Xinjiang all the time. You can watch , though it obviously isn't going to be a comprehensive view of course.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

From the conclusion of the UN report you linked:

Serious human rights violations have been committed in XUAR in the context of the Government’s application of counter-terrorism and counter-“extremism” strategies. The implementation of these strategies, and associated policies in XUAR has led to interlocking patterns of severe and undue restrictions on a wide range of human rights. These patterns of restrictions are characterized by a discriminatory component, as the underlying acts often directly or indirectly affect Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim communities.

But this is all just whataboutism anyway. We can be against human rights violations regardless of who is doing it and whether they condemn each other.

in reply to arrowMace

Yes, I linked the UN allegations, as well as China's response and Qiao Collective's comprehensive resource list. The UN report was the allegations, the rest is the response to them.

Investigation ordered after Iraq appears to designate Hezbollah and Houthis terrorists

The apparent designation of Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi movement as terror groups by the Iraqi government sparked confusion and recriminations on Thursday, with authorities later saying the sanctions were announced in error.

The decision, published on 17 November by the justice ministry in the official gazette, surprised many, as the Iraqi government appeared to group the two organisations in the same bracket as al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group.

Initially, many saw the designation as a sign that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, whose outgoing government is largely composed of parties with links to Iran, was buckling under American pressure. Little attention was paid to the move until Thursday, however, when news outlets belatedly began to pick up on it.

The controversy prompted questions from observers: were Hezbollah and the Houthis genuinely placed on the list by mistake, or was the government trying to backtrack to curb anger from its allies?

So how could I put games on it? Is it a different format? Also does it work similar to R4?

What are your favourite songs discovered this year?

Spotify Wrapped is on the streets now, but rather than everyone saying what a cold algorithm told them their favourite songs were this year, I'd like to hear what actual people actually think.

So what are your favourite musical discoveries this year? Whether those were brand new songs from 2025, older songs that you only heard for the first time this year, or even songs you re-discovered after years of not hearing them.

Here’s some of mine, in the format of a goofy award show:

Favourite New Song From This Year
- Maybe technically cheating because the band has apparently been playing this song live since at least 2023, but the studio version is from this year.

Favourite New Song Actually From This Year
the thoughts that keep me up at night by Marhly - This one makes me feel old, mostly because the artist is that much younger than me. But there’s something about the anxious lyrics that felt very 2025.

Favourite New Song That Really Made Me Feel Old
- Speaking of artists that are way, way younger than me, we have this song. I’m not sure about the warbly vocals in some places, but it’s upbeat and optimistic (like its says on the tin).

Favourite New Song That Made Me Feel Young
Well, Whatever it Was by Joyce Manor - This song feels like it could have come out when I was in high school, but rather than make me feel my age, it put a spring in my step. I didn’t actually listen to much music back then, so maybe I’ve misestimated my musical eras, but I can’t really shake the feeling.

Favourite New Song by a Band That I Saw Live
- Granted, I only went to one concert this year, but still counts, right? I’m not a huge OLP fan, mostly knowing their songs by osmosis, but hearing this song for the first time made me buy a ticket. It was kind of a rebound concert as I had to miss seeing my favourite band on their farewell tour, but I still enjoyed myself, even if they didn’t play this particular song.

Favourite Rediscovered Song
Tornado of Souls by Megadeth - I used to listen to Rust In Peace quite a bit when I was younger, but I kind forgot about it (and most other metal) for the better part of a decade until a new Megadeth song hit my recommendations. That caused me to go back and listen, and reawaken by appreciation for this song.

Favourite Song Discovered Through Weird Coincidence
- This one randomly came up in my wife’s playlist. Neither of us had heard of the band before, but I figure it had something to do with the Ghost songs that we both like.

Favourite New Cover
Folsom Prison Blues by Sawyer Hill - A heavier take on a Johnny Cash song, my first thought when I heard this was, “Boy, they don’t make them like this any more.” Sawyer Hill has an interesting voice, baritone like Cash but more gravelly. Speaking of which…

Favourite New Song That I Liked Purely for a Single Element
- Do I actually like this song? Is this actually a good song? I don't know, but Mr. Hill has a really interesting voice, so I’m willing to forgive some lyrics that feel a bit too cute. I do understand if his voice drives people away, though; what I’ve gathered is that some people really cannot stand it.

Favourite New Song With the Hardest Hitting Lyric
Troubadour Moon by The Wildhearts - “It’s a bitch when you find out you’re just an ordinary man.” Oof.

Favourite New Song That Really Has Me Hoping the Artist Isn’t Problematic
- I kid (mostly), but it is southern rock. I haven’t found anything problematic about Ms. Fish, thankfully, but I also haven’t dug too far.

Favourite New Song Discovered Through Lemmyvision
Band LIke That by fanclubwallet - I submitted a bunch of songs for my country’s entry in Lemmyvision. None of them got many votes, but I did discover this one submitted by someone else.

Honourable Mentions

Ma Cherie by Palaye Royale and Kellin Quinn

In My Pocket by Cafuné

How to show file icons by default application in GNOME?

Hi everyone,

I’m using Fedora Linux 43 with GNOME 49. By default, GNOME shows file icons based on the file type, not the application that opens them.

What I’d like to achieve is for file icons to show the icon of the program that is set as the default to open the file—similar to how it works in Windows.

For example, in my screenshot, I have three files that are all opened by the same program by default (VSCodium in this case), but each one has a different icon based on its file type. I’d like them all to show the icon of the program instead.

Is there a way to show file icons based on the default app?

Thanks in advance!

in reply to mypasswordis1234

This isn't a GNOME-specific thing as other DEs also display files by their file type. It's all defined by the icon theme.

I'm not sure if there exists an icon theme that replaces the unique filetype icons with specific application icons, but if such a thing does exist, that could be a solution.

You could also edit the icon theme you're using yourself too, if you're feeling adventurous. Using the Papirus icon theme, on my system the image representing a python text file is located in /usr/share/icons/Papirus/64x64/mimetypes/text-x-python.svg. I could replace that image with anything. I'm not sure why I'd want to do that, but if you really want to replace all these images with an image of VSCodium no one's gonna stop you.

Maybe there's a script that does this automatically? If such a thing exists, it'll probably follow the steps I just mentioned.

A New Anonymous Phone Carrier Lets You Sign Up With Nothing but a Zip Code

Nicholas Merrill received a hand delivered National Security Letter from the FBI in 2004, ordering him to give up data on one of his customers.

Merrill opened it and read the letter while the agent waited. The first and second paragraphs told him he was hereby ordered to hand over virtually all information he possessed for one of his customers, identified by their email address, explaining that this demand was authorized by a law he’d later learn was part of the Patriot Act.

The third paragraph informed him he couldn’t tell anyone he’d even received this letter—a gag order.

He then fought a landmark, decade-plus legal battle against the FBI and the Department of Justice. As the owner of an internet service provider in the post-9/11 era, Merrill had received a secret order from the bureau to hand over data on a particular user—and he refused. He refused and won.

After that, he spent another 15 years building and managing the Calyx Institute, a nonprofit that offers privacy tools like a snooping-resistant version of Android and a free VPN that collects no logs of its users’ activities.

Now the completely anonymous phone service. The full article is worth the read.

Does anyone know how to make the Arch text bigger?

I'm a macbro who's been using the terminal for eight years. I downloaded an Archlinux VM for UTM (macOS Tahoe) and I like it, I just wish the text was bigger. I know you don't get Arch because of its snazzy UI, you do it so you can do....Idk, cool 1337 h4x0r shit? I seriously don't know, you guys, I've only been an Arch user for like three days.
in reply to alias_qr_rainmaker

GNOME Files (Nautilus) doesn't have a setting that lets you switch between file type icons and app icons. That's one thing that makes GNOME different from Windows. There might be a workaround, though, you could try a different file manager, but I'm not aware of one that specificall yimplements the kind of app-based icons you get with Windows
in reply to alias_qr_rainmaker

People can hate on OP and I might be an idiot too... But font sizing is one reason why I switched from Gnome (on Ubuntu) to KDE Plasma (on Debian). I had setup Gnome/Ubuntu for an older friend and I was really bummed by the difficulty of increasing the fonts/icons. With Plasma it's just basic settings.

NHS doctor suspended over alleged antisemitic social media posts

The Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service (MPTS) said Dr Aladwan's posts "may impact on patient confidence" in both her and the profession, while patients could be "discouraged" from seeking treatment from her.

Dr Aladwan, who is British Palestinian, denies making racist or hate speech.

Her lawyer told the tribunal there was "no evidence" that her activities have had "any impact on patient safety or her ability to fulfil her duties as a doctor".

Dr Aladwan's suspension will take effect from today and will be reviewed within six months.

In the tribunal's ruling, it said it "notes that there is no information to suggest that any patient complaints have been raised or that any patients have come to harm".

Responding to the tribunal's ruling on X, Dr Aladwan said: "Let this decision stand as the definitive proof that there is no independent British medical regulation. The 'Israeli' and Jewish lobby decide who can and cannot practise medicine in Britain."

in reply to mannycalavera

Well, it's Lemmy, so immediately we get tribal responses from both sides of two sides of a conflict that would do exactly the same thing to each other if they had the chance.

The tribunal notes are here.

She compared Israel to Nazis and holocaust

She doxxed a former colleague on socal media. There were multiple complaints from her colleagues and the public.

She celebrated an attack on a Manchester Synagogue.

"outlined a large number of Dr Aladwan’s posts which she submitted involve social media activity which allegedly justifies terrorism, denies sexual violence, includes antisemitic conspiracy theories, misuses Holocaust and Nazi imagery and expresses support for proscribed groups and terrorist acts including the Al-Aqsa flood (the name Hamas gave to its large-scale surprise attack on Israel on
07/10/2023)."

There is a long list of infractions, but the general theme is that she was not only anti Israel, but blamed all Jews worldwide, Jews control the media, etc. etc.

Exact quote: ‘May God…gather you with the Jews, the killers of children, in the fire".

Overall, it goes on for pages outlining a toxic person who has gone off the deep end and has lost any professional composure. The response from her lawyer is basically, "Did not...did not.. did not..."

in reply to SaveTheTuaHawk

so immediately we get tribal responses from both sides

Good thing you're providing the defense of Israel since nobody else on Lemmy is willing to do that.
