Kash Patel caught ordering FBI agents to drive girlfriend's 'inebriated' pal home: report

in reply to Arthur Besse

While it's not a good port, it was still impressive on a technical level. Especially when you consider it was basically done from scratch in about 10 weeks

RIP

Kash Patel ordered FBI detail to give girlfriend’s pal a lift home: sources

The FBI director’s use of resources is under intense scrutiny as he insists he’s “a steward of the taxpayer dollars.”

FBI Director Kash Patel has — on more than one occasion — ordered that the security detail protecting his girlfriend escort one of her allegedly inebriated friends home after a night of partying in Nashville, according to three people with knowledge of the incidents.

Patel’s girlfriend, Alexis Wilkins, asked FBI agents on her security team at least two times, including once this spring, to drive her friend home, and agents objected to diverting from their assignment, said the sources, who were granted anonymity to discuss nonpublic matters. But Patel insisted they do as Wilkins requested and in one case called the leader of Wilkins’ security detail and yelled at him to do so.

News of the effort to deploy agents to provide security for a private citizen has spread through the bureau and beyond, as agents have grown increasingly concerned by Patel’s use of the bureau’s strapped resources, the people said.

Watched Bugonia and I Saw The TV Glow

I didn't expect these movies to have anything in common thematically

::: spoiler spoiler

but they're both literally about moon guys making life real sad

:::

Also, both had an immersion breaking moment when someone I know from podcasting showed up halfway through the film.

And they're both great! Highly recommend to everyone here. I'm sure mostly everyone here has seen I Saw the TV Glow but Bugonia is another Lanthimos banger.

in reply to FunkyStuff [he/him]

I haven't seen Bugonia yet and I don't feel really compelled to. Lanthimos, to me, is one of those directors who's now just repeating the same thing over and over while his best work is far behind his back (in this case, Kynodontas). But since you compared it to one of the best American movies I've seen in the last years, I'll probably give it a shot. Maybe.

Mobile service that doesn't know who you are: phreeli

New prepaid virtual network provider which doesn't know anything about you except your zip code. This proves other telecoms could do it too.

Cheapest plans currently start at 25/mo. So much more than minimalistic providers, but not outrageous.

EU fines X €120 million under the Digital Services Act

After Years of Controversy, the EU’s Chat Control Nears Its Final Hurdle: What to Know

Cross posted from: feddit.uk/post/40600495

After a years-long battle, the European Commission’s “Chat Control” plan, which would mandate mass scanning and other encryption-breaking measures, at last codifies agreement on a position within the Council of the EU, representing EU States. The good news is that the most controversial part, the forced requirement to scan encrypted messages, is out. The bad news is there’s more to it than that.

Chat Control has gone through several iterations since it was first introduced, with the EU Parliament backing a position that protects fundamental rights, while the Council of the EU spent many months pursuing an intrusive law-enforcement-focused approach. Many proposals earlier this year required the scanning and detection of illicit content on all services, including private messaging apps such as WhatsApp and Signal. This requirement would fundamentally break end-to-end encryption.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of digital rights groups, including European Digital Rights (EDRi), we won a significant improvement: the Council agreed on its position, which removed the requirement that forces providers to scan messages on their services. It also comes with strong language to protect encryption, which is good news for users.

The truth is, the fascists will always relentlessly find another crevice to stick their dirty hands into. A compromise with fascists isn't a win - it's a defeat with extra steps. Their so called "risk mitigation" is essentially another way in achieving the exact same thing from another angle.

That being said; the war continues. And while it is good that we avoided this policy - we'll never actually win until we change something.

Does Lemmy have the capacity to comply? Since it’s fedeverse based and mastodon already said it can’t, I assume lemmy is in the same situation.

Has anyone been able to play efootball 19 on linux?

Hey, back in the old days unfortunately, I used to use windows, a fit beautiful girl gave me the game.
I would appreciate if there's any tricks to get game to work on linux

in reply to claim_arguably

I use Bottles for windows games that I don't have on steam or GOG.
in reply to claim_arguably

Are you having any specific problems running the game? I've run various efootball titles without issue on linux. I tend to use lutris for non-steam games, but bottles should do the same job, as another poster said.

Israel remains in Eurovision

Ireland, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovenia will boycott next year's Eurovision Song Contest, after Israel was allowed to compete.

They were among a number of countries who had called for Israel to be excluded over the humanitarian toll of the war in Gaza, and accusations of unfair voting practices.

Despite calls for a vote on Israel's participation, members instead approved a new set of rules intended to protect the integrity of the contest.

Ireland's national broadcaster RTE said it felt that its "participation remains unconscionable given the appalling loss of lives in Gaza and the humanitarian crisis there which continues to put the lives of so many civilians at risk."

In a statement, Dutch broadcaster Avrotros said that "participation under the current circumstances is incompatible with the public values that are essential to us".

Spanish broadcaster RTVE added: "The board of directors of RTVE agreed last September that Spain would withdraw from Eurovision if Israel was part of it."

"This withdrawal also means that RTVE will not broadcast the Eurovision 2026 final... nor the preliminary semi-finals."

Kagan warns constitutional "violation" in Supreme Court's Texas map ruling

Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan warned that the Supreme Court's decision in the Texas redistricting case will lead to a "violation of the Constitution" of voter rights.

The Supreme Court issued an unsigned decision in favor of freezing the initial 2-1 U.S. federal court ruling against Texas Governor Greg Abbott's proposed redistricting map, a stay that could help Republicans pick up five additional U.S. House seats in next year's midterms.

"This Court’s stay ensures that many Texas citizens, for no good reason, will be placed in electoral districts because of their race," Kagan wrote in her dissent. "And that result, as this Court has pronounced year in and year out, is a violation of the Constitution."

Is there anyone here who’s ever setup a VNC server with a desktop environment on a VPS and interacted with the remote computer thru a laptop?
in reply to ifiokambrose

Theses days I use Waypipe and WPRS
in reply to ifiokambrose

yeah i always do this with tigervnc server on X11. create a vncpasswd file and place xinitrc on ~/.vnc/xstartup, then run vncserver :1 to create X11 display :1 and vnc server on port 5901. if you want to start vnc on a (physical) session already running, you can run x0vncserver. there's also x11vnc but x0vncserver feels much faster for me.

China pledges $100m for Gaza as Israeli siege continues to devastate enclave

Also important to note Hamas thanked the PRC and President Xi "as an extension of China’s historic positions supporting the rights of the Palestinian people, foremost among them the right to freedom, independence, and the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital."

don't like this

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

A bit weird coming from China when you know what they did to Muslims in their own country...
in reply to VeryInterestingTable

Not at all wierd, China has been a strong supporter of Palestinian liberation for over half a century, and Muslims in China are quite happy. I'm assuming you're referring to the western allegations of genocide in Xinjiang, though there's pretty much no actual evidence for it. The best and most comprehensive resource I have seen so far is Qiao Collective's Xinjiang: A Resource and Report Compilation. Qiao Collective is explicitly pro-PRC, but this is an extremely comprehensive write-up of the entire background of the events, the timeline of reports, and real and fake claims.

I also recommend reading the UN report and China's response to it. These are the most relevant accusations and responses without delving into straight up fantasy like Adrian Zenz, professional propagandist for the Victims of Communism Foundation, does.

Tourists go to Xinjiang all the time. You can watch , though it obviously isn't going to be a comprehensive view of course.

in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

From the conclusion of the UN report you linked:

Serious human rights violations have been committed in XUAR in the context of the Government’s application of counter-terrorism and counter-“extremism” strategies. The implementation of these strategies, and associated policies in XUAR has led to interlocking patterns of severe and undue restrictions on a wide range of human rights. These patterns of restrictions are characterized by a discriminatory component, as the underlying acts often directly or indirectly affect Uyghur and other predominantly Muslim communities.

But this is all just whataboutism anyway. We can be against human rights violations regardless of who is doing it and whether they condemn each other.

in reply to arrowMace

Yes, I linked the UN allegations, as well as China's response and Qiao Collective's comprehensive resource list. The UN report was the allegations, the rest is the response to them.

If Israel treated Palestinians the way China treats its Muslim population, it would be held up as the platonic ideal of compassion and goodness, and Netanyahu would be awarded every noble peace prize for the next century
in reply to Cowbee [he/they]

i think if china wants to help they can just stop doing trade with israel , that would actually matter i think
