Lemmy.zip & Piefed.zip Server Update December 2025

Hello all, Demigodrick here.

I have to let you in on a secret. I've never touched a computer in my life. I don't actually know what the internet is. I write these posts by pinning notes to carrier pigeons and scaring them away. Somehow ~~life~~ these posts... uh... finds a way.

Truth be told, I'm kind of short on time these days. In a bid to bring these posts back on track in a timely manner, I've outsourced this post to a colony of extremely motivated ants. They’ve unionised since, so I’m now contractually obliged to publish whatever they write.

Server Updates

Lemmy.zip

We are still in our Lemmy 1.0 holding pattern, with me too afraid to write any zippy code in case something breaks and I have to go back over that uncommented clusterfuck that I mashed together.

The battle against scrapers continues.

Here's a little screenshot of how much bot traffic we're identifying and challenging vs how many humans get caught up in this:

As you can see, this shows that while some people do get caught up, the rules we've implemented work really well at keeping bots at bay. Mostly.

If you see an error screen it's probably a scraper taking us down 🙁

Piefed.zip

We're still keeping Piefed.zip on the dev branch, but we are considering swapping to the next stable version. If you're a Piefed.zip user, thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Development on Piefed is fast, which means you get new features quicker on the dev branch, but also more bugs and quirks.

Please Don’t Be a Lurker!

If you’re new here - WELCOME! I hope you’re enjoying your time here 😀

Just one small teeny-tiny request. The greatest gift you can give Lemmy.zip and Piefed.zip isn’t money, praise, or interpretive dance (although we would absolutely accept the last one). Its participation.

Upvote the things you like. Start a discussion, debate, or ponder about whether water is wet or merely makes things wet. Make new communities if you don’t see one that fits your oddly specific niche obsession.
(We don’t judge. Well, we try not to judge anyway.)

The fediverse naturally ebbs and flows, tides of people come and go. But if you’ve found yourself oddly attached to this strange little corner of the internet? Wonderful. Help it breathe. Help it grow. Help it be just a tiny bit weirder in the best possible way.

So if you’ve gone to the effort of clicking Sign Up and proving you’re not a robot (unless you are, in which case hello and welcome to our new AI overlords), then please, I beg of you:

Stick around. Add your voice. It really does make this place better.

And there we have it. Another month has passed. The next time I do this, it will be 2026! I reflected 12 months ago that doing this end of year update for a second year was, and I quote, "fucking nuts". As I now do this third time, I am floored by how much things have changed in the space of 12 months, and yet comforted by how many of you I see around Lemmy and have got to know over all of this time. Since I did that post last year, Lemmy.zip has changed into a real not for profit business. What a learning curve that was but monumental in the longevity of this site. We saw the loss of lemm.ee, but this brought many people over to DotZip who've hopefully found a new home. We set up Piefed.zip, which has been steadily growing all this time too!

I want to put out a genuine thank you to everyone who uses one of our sites. None of us are doing this for any reason other than wanting to create the best space possible, free from advertising and tracking, and all of your efforts, whether creating regular posts, moderating communities, or even just the odd upvote, means so much to me. It still excites me seeing a .zip user in the wild 😀

I hope you have a lovely and restful period over the end of this year, and that you get to spend time with those that you love.

See you all next year!

What kind of integrations do you have right now, is there any way to see the code? Lemmy 1.0 has a backwards compatible API which can cover some use basic use cases. You may also be interested to write Lemmy plugins (in Webassembly) for your use cases.

Your post also made me wonder if Lemmy should have any builtin functionality against bots.

Good to see this update, well done!

New Safety Mandate Accelerates Retirement Fears for Boeing 717 Fleet

A recently issued Airworthiness Directive (AD) is forcing deeper maintenance checks on the Boeing 717 aircraft, prompting concerns that the cost and time involved could hasten the type’s withdrawal from service by major operators like Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines.

China’s trade surplus tops $1 trillion for first time

China’s annual trade surplus in goods has topped $1 trillion for the first time, with plunging exports to the United States amid a tariff war more than compensated for by shipments to other markets, new data shows.

Figures released by China’s General Administration of Customs on Monday showed the trade surplus for the first 11 months of the year hit $1.08 trillion in November, as exports climbed 5.9 percent year-on-year that month, reversing a 1.1 percent decline the month prior.

The leap came despite a continued slump in exports to the US, which fell 28.6 percent to $33.8bn last month, the data showed.

Beijing and Washington have been locked in a bitter trade war involving hefty tariffs during the second administration of US President Donald Trump, forcing Chinese exporters to pivot to other markets – although the leaders of the world’s two largest economies agreed to pause the hostilities during a meeting in South Korea in October.

Fortunately for me, used cars with manual transmission are dead cheap here in Slovakia. I think I saw one for 3-4K€ on used car reseller website.

That's OK. We've got other stuff to do. Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul, rewatch the original Star Wars trilogy. Cyberpunk, Witcher 3, Stardew Valley. And about 20,000 unread ebooks. I'll be just fine.

At what point do we go back to creators hosting MP4 files that you can just buy from them directly? That would almost certainly be more financially viable for indie film makers and would certainly be a better user experience. I personally would gladly spend money on media I like over piracy if it goes to the actual creators and I get a regular file I can store myself and play as many times as I want.

in reply to wampus

You seem to be doing a lot of projecting. I Iove how you just keep replying with one word salad after another in sad attempts to act like you're some sort of an intellectual, while it's evident that you lack even the most basic reading comprehension. Amazing how you're able to make an analysis of a paper based on having read half a paragraph. You must really get off on making a clown of yourself in public.

in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

All of your responses to me have just been thinly veilled passive aggressive insults that don't refute anything that I've said.
in reply to wampus

I think both of you could learn about the term "be the bigger man." How absolutely disappointing that you both react to each other with spiraling passive-aggression rather than sympathy or mutual understanding. Please, let's keep lemmy habitable.

in reply to jaselle

I don't think I've made any passive aggressive comments -- most/all of my replies are briefly noting the other posters aggressiveness, and then expanding on points I'd made to try and clarify, in hopes that the other poster would grow up, or to allow them to continue to lob personal attacks to highlight just how baseless their position is/was. After recognising the other persons a .ml, and the reputation .ml has, I realise there's likely not much point to it though.
in reply to jaselle

I'm not pretending I have some moral high ground here. However, doing hand wringing about decorum while ignoring the fact that wampus here is trying to dismiss a study on Canada's role in colonialism is focusing entirely on the wrong thing.
in reply to ☆ Yσɠƚԋσʂ ☆

I'd feel much more sympathetic to that response if you hadn't been such an asshole in this thread.
in reply to jaselle

A sharp dismissal of absurdity draws a clear line, shows others they don’t have to entertain every bad argument, and prevents the conversation from being derailed. If you want to spend your life debating trolls then go ahead and do that.

I must strongly say that I, who am a person of short words and on the other there is this that also we need to talk about. But one must acknowledge the importance of the process and the situation, which we all know has to improve, but everyone has to his and her part. This and many other things has to be said. A must-read on the humanization of LLMs / chatbots

reshared this

in reply to OmegaSunkey

The thing I see LLMs more useful for is searching.

Imagine asking a robot where a book with certain contents is. I wish for that instead of a robot that does my homework, because I suck a little with searching.

I also saw them useful for science: putting all selected, finetuned scientific articles and papers into an LLM to see what it can do on a specific scientific field. So imagine my surprise seeing this is only doable for private associations, since there is nothing "good" on the public web.

in reply to OmegaSunkey

that would be great, but they'd have to redo it a bit, so you can peruse the sources to the text it produces from your prompt. I don't think they store that info, but that would be super awesome.

The Supreme Court weighs Trump's bid to fire independent agency board members

The Trump administration’s push to expand control over independent federal agencies comes before a sympathetic Supreme Court that could overturn a 90-year-old decision limiting when presidents can fire board members.

Lawyers for the administration are defending President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Federal Trade Commission member Rebecca Slaughter without cause and calling on the court to jettison the unanimous 1935 decision in Humphrey’s Executor.

Arguments are taking place Monday.

The court’s six conservative justices already have signaled strong support for the administration’s position, over the objection of their three liberal colleagues, by allowing Slaughter and the board members of other agencies to be removed from their jobs even as their legal challenges continue.

New Air Force Chief Boosts Nuclear Buildup, Moving Away From Deterrence, Experts Warn

In his first major guidance to the Air Force, the newly appointed Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach emphasized a need for the “recapitalization” of nuclear weapons — an apparent departure from decades of Air Force teaching that the United States maintains nuclear weapons solely for deterrence.

“We will advocate relentlessly for programs like the F-47, Collaborative Combat Aircraft as well as nuclear force recapitalization through the Sentinel program and the B-21,” Wilsbach wrote in a memo dated November 3, referring to planned upgrades to nuclear missiles and stealth bombers.

“This memo of unity and warfighting spirit reflects current Department of War and Pete Hegseth language, but that language is also inadequate because it assumes U.S. military capability is the best in the world and getting better, a dangerous and flawed assumption,” said Karen Kwiatkowski, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel and former Pentagon analyst who exposed the politicization of intelligence before the Iraq War.
