The Tag Team Fails in Iran – John Mearsheimer
The mainstream media in the West is committed to portraying the protests in Iran as strictly an internal affair. The people of Iran, so the argument goes, spontaneously rose up against their government because they were in desperate straits due to their leaders’ corruption and mismanagement of the economy, as well as their oppressive policies. Virtually all the protestors in this story were peaceful, but their protests were met with government violence. Outside forces had little to do with causing the protests.This interpretation of what happened in Iran is wrong and contradicted by an abundance of evidence. None of this is to deny that there were many peaceful protestors who had legitimate grievances against the government, but that is only part of the story.
If fact, what happened in Iran is an attempt by the Israeli & American tag team to overthrow the government in Tehran and break apart Iran, much the way the US, Turkey, and Israel fractured Syria.
But the strategy failed, mainly because the Iranian government was able to shut down the protests quickly and decisively. A key element in the government’s success was shutting down Starlink, which made it extremely difficult for the protestors to communicate with each other and the outside world. Once that happened, the protests were doomed and both Prime Minister Netanyahu and Trump understood that the tag team could not use military force to deliver the coup de gras. The Iranian regime had survived.
The bottom line is two-fold: 1) the tag team failed to overthrow the regime in Iran, although it surely has not given up on that goal; and 2) there is good reason to think that Israel and the US did not win the 12-Day war.

Lang had been in the Twin Cities for at least a week, often taunting anti-ICE protesters. He arrived at City Hall, where the temperature hovered near 10° F, in a camouflage, military-style vest but no hat, gloves, or scarf. Hundreds of protesters stood across the street behind barricades, holding signs and chanting; dozens of others surrounded Lang’s small entourage as he spoke to reporters. Several police officers on the scene left shortly after his arrival; there was no police presence attempting to separate Lang from the counter-protesters.Lang took a position above the crowd in a wide window well. Despite the megaphone in his hand, his speech was drowned out by the chanting. A few protesters threw snowballs and water balloons at Lang, now trapped on his ledge. It was a young Black man, Isaiah Blackwell, who eventually stepped in to shield Lang, and then cleared a path for him to leave; several dozen protesters followed, some trying to hit or punch him as he went, while others scuffled with Lang supporters. America was never ours to begin with, so how does it make sense that we can’t share, especially with people seeking safety and shelter?”
National media immediately grabbed hold of this incident, playing up the violence and overlooking the hundreds of well-disciplined Minnesotans across the street who simply chanted “Leave, leave, leave” and “Shame, shame, shame.” Lang, who did suffer a cut to the back of the head and was clearly shaken by the encounter, claimed that someone had tried to “stab” him through his vest.

To add onto this:
Most cities often have a group that renders mutual aid directly to those most in need, and they would love your help. Food Not Bombs is the most well known, and they have an index you can search to find one local to your area.
If you don't have one in your area, you and some friends could start your own Food Not Bombs chapter instead! Alternatively, a local church who is already assisting the homeless can be a good place to find an established group, even if you're not religious.
For people in need while on your way to work or the grocery store, assembling Care Packages can allow you to immediately render useful aid. The contents of a care package will be determined by your area and the needs of the people you're looking to give them to. Chatting with a person in need and asking them what would be most helpful to them is one of the best ways to narrow down the essentials, and avoid things that won't actually be of much use.
But there are generally a few universal things that will always be appreciated.

1. Socks! - This is often the most requested aid, as they prevent blisters, and wear quickly due to constant use and frequent walking. Used socks are fine as long as they're washed and clean. For colder or wet climates, wool socks are vastly preferred, as they have anti-bacterial properties, and still provides warmth even when wet.
2. Hygiene supplies - Things like a bar of soap (with sealable bag to store it when wet), deodorant, babywipes, a washcloth, toothbrush and paste, rinseless body wipes, comb.
3. Menstrual hygiene supplies.
4. Over-the-counter Medical supplies - Painkillers, bandages, antibiotic ointment, rubbing alcohol.
5. Calorie-dense non-perishable food - This often takes the form of canned foods (ensure they have a pull tab!), protein bars, or dehydrated fruits. Try to avoid hard or crunchy food, as it's possible the person you're trying to help may have active dental issues that may not allow them to chew those types of foods. Softer foods are preferred.
6. Electrolyte drinks or drink packets - Especially needed in hotter climates where electrolyes will be constantly lost through sweat, and can be life threatening if not replaced. Ones with sugar tend to have more calories, but may not be usable by those with diabetes, so it may be a good idea to have some with alternative sweeteners as well.
7. Money - Cash can drastically increase the quality of life of someone without access to an income, and allow them to obtain the things they need most when they need it. Any amount you can afford is useful.
8. Backpacks - If they don't already have one, a backpack is generally much appreciated to help carry around the supplies in your care package. You can often find them used at thrift stores.
9. Petfood - Catfood is preferable to dogfood, as catfood can be eaten by either dogs or cats, while the same can sometimes not be true for dogfood. People with a pet companion will be quite grateful.
10. Resealable Waterproof bag - Something like a large ziplock so that they have a waterproof place to protect their supplies.
Lastly, if you have access to a printer, try to include a page of resources such as a list of local mutual aid groups where they can obtain more help in the future, along with their address and times that they operate. On the opposite side, a map of your area and any local public transit routes and timetables would also likely be useful.

Is there currently any notion of a “Head Mod” / “Top Mod” in Lemmy’s API or data model?
I recently made a feature suggestion post for the Lemmy app Summit, which I personally use.
The idea was a small UI/UX enhancement:
Summit already visually distinguishes roles well:
Community Mods → green
Instance Admins → red
I suggested potentially adding a distinct colour for the Head Mod / Top Mod of a community, for example:
Instance Admin: Red
Head Mod: Yellow
Other Mods: Green
Kind of like a stoplight system (red / yellow / green).
The motivation was to make it easier at a glance to tell who ultimately runs a community, especially in larger mod teams or when reading mod comments in threads.
When I posted this to summit@lemmy.world, idunnololz@lemmy.world (the app’s creator and sole community mod) replied that they don’t think this is currently possible, because there doesn’t appear to be any notion of a “head mod” in the data returned by the API.
So my question for Lemmy devs / maintainers here:
Does Lemmy currently track any concept of a “top mod” or mod hierarchy internally?
If not, is the mod list intentionally flat by design?
Would adding an explicit “community owner” / “head mod” role be technically feasible or aligned with Lemmy’s design philosophy?
Are there federation or governance reasons this hasn’t been modeled?
Not trying to push a specific feature — I’m mostly curious about the architectural and philosophical reasoning behind how moderation roles are represented today.

A dream of a Linux distribution where the entire desktop environment is Win32 software running under WINE. A completely free and open-source OS where you can just download .exe files and run them, for the power user who isn't necessarily a Unixhead, or just for someone who thinks this sounds fun.
I like the layout and looks of windows 2000 but I think running actual exe files from the old OS is not viable from security standpoint.

My mom and my wife's mom have computers soon to be out of support. Windows.
They need something stable, but also that does all their normal stuff. I'd love something that updated cleanly like enterprise Linux, but gave them the win7 interface they had for so long (they complain about this one now).
So that's your market. Yeah, a wine box would work well, and Nobara is nearly the winning candidate. But even it requires a lot of finagling for windows people, and I'd love something completely seamless so it's easier to support.

might be good for the potential switchers who need something very similar to windows, old computers that need to brainlessly run win32 software. deshitified windows for those who need it. normies orphaned by win10 who are not ready to learn linux headfirst for any reason. and all open source so you can actually trust your os.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel that Lemmy should potentially duplicate this feature?
On Reddit, subreddit moderators can comment as regular users by default, and only show the green MOD badge when they intentionally “distinguish” a comment as an official moderation response.
It got me thinking about Lemmy.
On Lemmy, mod comments are often immediately identifiable, even when the mod is just participating casually in a discussion rather than speaking in an official capacity. That can sometimes unintentionally shift the tone of a thread or discourage open conversation.
Do you think Lemmy should consider:
A clearer opt-in distinction system for mod comments
The ability for mods to participate by default as regular users unless explicitly marking a comment as “mod voice”
Or is the current transparency model preferable for federated communities?
Curious how other instance admins, mods, and users feel about this — especially from a trust, power-balance, and community-health perspective.
Is this something Lemmy should copy from Reddit, or is it intentionally different for good reason?

Because of how federation works, that (or those, depending on what client you use,) badges or indicators can't be completely hidden.
Lemmy devs could I guess hide it in the API, but it would be as hidden as votes are right now (e.g. if someone really wanted to, they could spin up a temporary instance to get that info). I mean, look at what lemvotes.org/ does.
And in this case, you don't even need an instance, you can literally just use browser.pub on your browser right now to get the moderators activitypub collection: browser.pub/https%3A%2F%2Flemm…

But yeah I remember the Do Not Track signal ironically being used to track you. And I remember Microsoft make it completely useless because they turned it on by default.
