Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc said the ceasefire in Gaza marks a key step toward reopening Red Sea shipping routes.
The company had rerouted vessels around Africa since December 2023 after Houthi attacks on one of its ships. Clerc dismissed concerns about “de-globalization,” saying current developments reflect a return to normal trade flows.
Houthi assaults on vessels in the Red Sea, which were in retaliation of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza, had disrupted global commerce and forced many ships to avoid the Suez Canal in favor of longer routes around Africa.
Since Gaza ceasefire took effect, Houthi assaults on vessels have been halted, yet Israel continues to bombard Gaza even amid the deal. Since the ceasefire, Israel killed about 280 Palestinians in Gaza.
