Etaples, etwa 15 Meilen südlich von Boulogne, war ein berüchtigtes Basislager der britischen Armee für diejenigen, die auf dem Weg nach vorne waren. Unter schrecklichen Bedingungen waren sowohl rohe Rekruten aus England als auch kampfmüde Veteranen einer intensiven Ausbildung in Gaskriegsführung, Bajonettübungen und langen Sitzungen des Marschierens am Doppelüber in den Dünen unterzogen. Nach zwei Wochen bei Etaples waren viele der Verwundeten nur zu froh, mit ungeheilten Wunden an die Front zurückzukehren. Die Bedingungen im Krankenhaus waren eher strafen als therapeutisch und es gab Vorfälle im Krankenhaus zwischen Militärpolizei und Patienten.
