I'm seeing a lot of conversation around usernames and the implementation of reserved words or profanity/harmful language filters.
This ties in to to a soon-to-be-available feature in Mastodon that will enable rules to proactively moderate account usernames.

As with all moderation tools, all friction is good friction, nothing is perfect. Used well, reserved word rules are a vital tool in the toolkit.

Unintended Consequences
Be cautious when using word filters in any language. Known issues include:
- the Scunthorpe Problem, which describes the unintentional blocking or false positives where acceptable words contain unacceptable text strings e.g. assistance should not become ***istance;
- context concerns, especially where lived experience is being discussed, e.g. compare “you are a Slur” with “I was walking down the street and someone called me a Slur”;
- reappropriation, the cultural process by which a group reclaims words that were previously used to disparage of that group.

The daily data for the Russian Telegram channel spam network will no longer be updated.
The actor in question has now created over 750 accounts on 180 servers, and shows no sign of slowing down. All activity appears to be manual, but automation of new accounts could quickly overwhelm the network.
Focus will now be on investigating and labelling abandoned and unmanaged domains, and announcing those domains on the newly-released AUD denylist: about.iftas.org/library/iftas-…

About this denylist
The Abandoned and Unmanaged list is an IFTAS-curated list of domains that are highly recommended for defederation or limited delivery. Each domain is labelled using a shared vocabulary label. Each domain is investigated by human review for governance, common content, network and service activities, hosting location and more.Before including any domain on this list we perform the following efforts to ascertain the service status:
- spam accounts are reported to the domain and monitored for mitigation for one week,
- if no mitigation is observed, the listed admin is contacted on network,
- if no response, the listed admin is contacted via email if publicly available,
- if no response, then any DNS/domain registrant contact information is used if available.
Inclusion on this list means we have observed this domain:
- is a dedicated spam service, or
- has been clearly abandoned but still allows creation of new accounts, or
- chooses to not delete known spam accounts, even when reported; and
- we are highly unlikely to ever retract an entry.
In all cases we strongly recommend you use a Federation Policy to aid you in your decision making.
