I remain hopeful - this reads to me transparently as an attempt to get hyper-rich idiots to invest in unnecessary and already-outdated extraction infrastructure in the last decade before extraction becomes economically infeasible.

@albjerre That is the very exact opposite of what we need do. It is cheap energy in the form of fossil fuels that has led to such incredible environmental destruction and devastation. There is nothing worse for our environment than cheap energy. What we do with the energy--by driving massive overconsumption and waste--is far more devastating than the energy itself.
And 'renewables' are neither renewable, clean or green--they are toxic and devastating.
I don't think the demand for more and more energy will go away soon. So the best we can do it to develop less polluting energy forms to replace fossil fuel.
@albjerre But this is the very thing that's causing the Sixth Great Mass Extinction--the surging demand for more energy. And I think you're right. That is why I can only see massive civilizational collapse in the not too distant future. And so we must preserve what we can. And we don't do that by devastating the rest of wild nature with a mining frenzy for wind and solar. We will not put out the fire by adding lithium to it.
new solar cells and batteries are also being developed that doesn't require massive amounts of rare earth minerals. And recycling of these solutions are also becoming more common. So that will hopefully help. I don't think we have other options than to work hard to develop the right solutions.

It is an energy consumption problem. We consume vastly too much energy and materials and produce vastly too much toxic waste. All these "new" and more "efficient" energy solutions merely accelerate the harms.
a lot of solutions have become much more energy efficient over the years. But more and more people around the world want to improve their living standards, and that requires energy. This development is difficult, almost impossible to stop. So we have to be more pragmatic and try to solve the problems in the best way possible instead of hoping for utopia.

I agree that the outlook is not great. But I try to do what I can to influence the politicians to limit growth while I also work on developing more sustainable solutions. It is better than doing nothing, and I don't think one approach should rule out the other.
