Occasionally - but it tends to be things I wasn't really that bothered about doing. Frustration is usually because I realise I'm just not going to make the thing as well as I'd like.
Eh. Not really? I mean, I've started and given up on things, but I usually find out if it's doable for me pretty quick, before I get invested in a project. If things do get hard and frustrating halfway through, I usually find a way to get past that and finish the thing one way or another. #MakersHour
I’ve got a coat I’ve been “making” for the past two years - basically I’m worried I’m going to mess it up so I’ve got as far as needing to cut out the lining and ground to a halt! I really do need to pick it up again
A3 I don't think it would be possible to give up on making - now more than ever. In fact the more technological things become, the more important making is.
But projects can often be put on the shelf for an indeterminate length of time. But that isn't giving up, that is tactical retreat and regrouping until the right frame of mind returns 😀
The only frustration is running out of "on the go" project storage space...

I have ADHD and so can have trouble with concentration when measuring or cutting. This can lead to me just abandoning a project - but I am getting better at restarting or going back through the basics again. One thing that frustrates me is wasting materials so that can inhibit a restart and maybe make me hash on a bit which is less clever really.

@Janet_52square that's a lovely thing to say and a good way to think. Im trying really hard these days to follow such advice and indeed you have given me in the past. I know that I do my best in everything and if it isn't good enough well, I can't say i didn't try
@Indigoatcrafts @Janet_52square There was a meme/post somewhere recently that essentially said we should stop trying to create to do a thing and then decide it fails if the thing itself isn't as good as we hoped.
The reason to create is just to create.
Anyone who creates within their ability is doing it perfectly well and can sit back and enjoy the fact they are creating.
Social media is a right so and so for implying the perceived perfection in others is the goal
@Janet_52square I feel this. Sometimes it’s better for me to move on to another project for a while until I find the motivation to either work through the frustration or let the project go.
@IcooIey Yes, i feel I have a cycle of projects rather than a list and I sort of spin through them adding here and there until magically something gets finished - like putting the door handle on.
@Janet_52square I have four research/writing projects ongoing at the moment plus all the on the fly business and meetings. Hard to find the blocks of time I need to dig in complete work.
@IcooIey What about when you have a presentation or lecture or whatever on a fixed date? I find nothing focuses the mind quite like knowing that on such and such a day there will be an *audience*.
A3 Yes, sometimes it feels like a project is cursed. Sometimes you just have to realise the best thing to do is leave the workshop and come back. Else you'll only end up creating extra work undoing your mistakes. Alas that's just part of making. Not every day is a good day.
But the good days? The most exquisite high. A high that is essentially impossible to explain to anyone who isn't also a maker.
@Andy I definitely thought frustration was a normal part of the process. It's a rare project that doesn't have that stage (even if I end up super proud of it later).
A3 #makershour ABSOLUTELY!! I go through it repeatedly with my Nettie project. Largely because on the house I got myself in a tangle. Instead of cracking on with the house Alfred made i feared my 1st go would ruin it so I found a broken down "practice house" and it worked in the story in my head but back of competence, self doubt and the need to work hard... you know the story.
Also, in my early (ish) days of self taught crochet, I gathered up every bit of wool ready to hurl out when a couple of online friends stepped in and pointed out a fundamental error i was making... everything fell into place after that Hazel and Handy! Crochet heroes but they aren't "here"
I have abandoned a jumper that I was trying to knit for a friend. It was beyond my skills. I have also thrown projects across the room when I get in a real muddle! #MakersHour I haven't thought of stopping altogether but sometimes it's a while between projects.

Now, while pushing through that barrier and triumphing while learning something is admirable, if your making is a hobby then hell, feel free to pop the frustrating thing on the shelf for however long. You're under no obligation to stress over things.
a3) I’ve definitely had to pause here and there. Never gave up on being a maker, but also gone long spells without finishing anything. Life/family/DIY/garden gets in the way.
#MakersHour A3: I frog frustrating or boring knitting projects all the time. Writing projects, I'm more reluctant to give up on, but when I lose the thread on a short story it's hard to get it back.
I'm not sure if I am never frustrated or actually always frustrated... if it is your base state what do you measure it against? But it rarely stops me doing a thing, aside from the unending frustration of not enough time.
I sometimes wonder why I spend so much time on some things, and worry if I'm getting the opportunity cost balance right.
But typically the more frustrated I get the more I dig in my heels to finish a thing. I could probably do with being more frustrated more often so I finish more things? 😅
I get most frustrated at bad tools. Actually, TBH, I recall I have given up on a couple of 3D prints becuase I just didn't want to waste more time coaxing my crappy 3D printer to not fail. (Thankfully most of what I want to print is fairly basic utilitarian and self designed knowing the limitations of my equipment.)
Oh, and computers. Constantly fucking frustrating. I gave up on a whole "computer" career once out of frustration. 🤪
A3. Awkwardness of setting up equipment is a frustration point for me, to the extent that I avoid sewing machines for most projects (the Crow Tools folding project keeper is an exception).
Frustration with skill level (sewing straight and evenly spaced seams; padding a wire doll armature; pinning seams; working above hand and lap sized projects) can be a discouragement which can cause some projects to go idle.
@jmeowmeow Actually I have to agree with you here, setting up equipment can be a real barrier for me in my tiny craft room, especially the lathe and the sewing machine. They all go on the same place so one needs taken down and cleaned up before the other comes out.
@Janet_52square I appreciate the sewing machine cabinets which fix the machine to a shelf which folds away under a tabletop when not in use. Similar appreciation for foldaway ironing boards.

A3. Giving up on individual projects? Nearly all of them. Giving up on making? Never. The process is the part that heals me so if one project ends in ruin I can just switch gears (although I'll get sad about the time, effort, and materials invested).
To get concrete: I have a split keyboard build that I had to put on ice until I've improved my soldering skills, after ruining the first PCB. I haven't given up, but I did get very irritated.
A3: I can’t say I have really. There are a lot of unfinished project I haven’t touch in a while. But it is less out of frustration and more mood and time. 😄 #makersHour
I frequently get frustrated when I do a watercolor on my own, after feeling successful during the paint-along! Sometimes I get too frustrated and I don’t finish the painting. My spouse wants my incomplete paintings and my rejects so they can turn them into postcards.

Я тут как-то писал, что rust-analyzer страшно тормозит и глючит и вот внезапно осознал, что надо спросить нейронку как его настроить что бы быстрее работал, там вагон настроек. После всех настроек для vscode и анализатора стало правда быстро работать. Меня раздражало, что переход к определениям типов тормозит и прочее подобное, теперь нет, я уж думал дело в том, что у меня ноут домашний слабый, дорожный, а он не слабый, но думал вдруг мало, надо было настроить, штук тридцать параметров.
У меня прям настроение улучшилось, пет растет и это стало прям напрягать, что так неудобно стало все. Я стал опасаться, что придется его делить на части, потом мучиться с пришиванием частей и так далее, только потому, что инструментарий говенный (он однопоточный внутри вроде бы даже). Но нет, опасения развеены.
The Trumps' World Liberty Financial project has frozen WLFI tokens in wallet addresses belonging to Justin Sun that contain ~$100 million (on paper) in unlocked WLFI. Sun is a major backer of the project, which the Trumps say they founded to stop "debanking".
The freeze apparently came after Sun transferred around ~$9M of his holdings to Binance.
The World Liberty team has been desperately trying to prevent the WLFI price from sinking, including by burning tokens to boost the price. They may be concerned that whales like Sun could further depress the token price by cashing out.
If Sun tanks WLFI and screws the Trumps over I will laugh so, so hard. The FBI response will be utterly epic too. (Deeply corrupt, but nonetheless epic)

@novarivera @drahardja this freeze was on the token side (the WLFI smart contract has a blacklist function). Sun does store his assets on an exchange, but he also owns the exchange, so a freeze on that end is certainly less of a concern for him.

Next Sosyal is a new Turkish social media platform that is based on Mastodon. The platform has not enabled federation, and is thus not accessible from the fediverse. Next Sosyal is endorsed by Turkish ruling party AKP, and president Erdogan recently made his first post on the platform. Erdoğan quoted a poem from a prominent Turkish poet, and posted “Are you ready?”, with the hashtag “We’re starting,” along with emojis of the Turkish flag, the Earth and a rocket.
Next Sosyal is developed by Selçuk Bayraktar, who owns military drone company Baykar and is the son-in-law of President Erdogan. The platform is branded as a “local and national” alternative to global platforms such as X and Facebook. Bayraktar describes the platform as a safer and cleaner space for constructive dialogue free from trolling, disinformation and Western platform algorithms.
The Nordic Monitor news site further reports: “Several ministries and public entities now maintain official Next Sosyal profiles. Staff in these offices report that social media guidance increasingly favors the platform. Press releases, bulletins and announcements are expected to appear on Next before being shared on global platforms. Some officials say internal memos suggested de-emphasizing X and Instagram entirely. In addition, some major corporations have reportedly started opening accounts on Next out of fear of government pressure.”
Bayraktar claims that the app now has over 1 million users. Since Next Sosyal is a slight reskin of Mastodon, it means that the same API also works. API calls to Next Sosyal on August 22nd showed an exact user count of 850.000, and as of September 2 the API claims a total of 1.100.000 accounts. Registering on the app requires a Turkish phone number, making it difficult for me to verify these numbers by looking at timeline activity, but the exact roundness of these numbers does raise some suspicions for me.
The platform was originally released without any reference to Mastodon’s source code. Mastodon is released under the AGPL license, which means that you can use, modify and distribute the software freely, as long as you publish the code under the same AGPL license. After some requests from the Mastodon organisation, Next Sosyal is now compliant with this, and explicitly mentions that “NSocial is an open source Mastodon-based social media platform developed by TEKNOFEST entrepreneurs.” on their About page.
We live in a world where authoritarian rulers seem to have a better grasp of current social media dynamics than many democratic leaders have. Both Trump and Erdogan understand the value of building a social media platform where they have a direct connection with their supporters, and can control message distribution. That both leaders use Mastodon for this, while democratic leadership shows little interest in building out their own social media distribution platforms on the open social web is painful.

Last week I wrote about SocialHub, a forum to discuss ActivityPub, and how it fits into a larger understanding of the ‘substrate’ layer of the fediverse. One of the points I made is that the communication layer underneath the fediverse (meaning places to discuss and collaborate on ActivityPub, for example) is fairly decentralised. The positive effect is that this creates a distribution of power, nobody can control all the conversations that happen about ActivityPub. This also means that coordination is more difficult, as developers are spread out over multiple places. There has been quite some movement this week in this space of “what are the places to talk about ActivityPub”:
The direct cause for writing the article was SocialHub potentially shutting down. A new administrator has been found, workers cooperative Pavillion. The cooperative was hired by forum software Discourse to create the ActivityPub plugin for the forum.
Activitypub.rocks is the ‘official’ website for the ActivityPub protocol, but it has not been updated for almost five years. Christine Lemmer-Webber, one of the co-authors of ActivityPub, has decided to hand over the website to the SocialCG, the community group for ActivityPub that is part of the W3C. A new initiative to work on the website from the SocialCG is led by Johannes Ernst, who also organises the FediForum conferences.
Activitypub.space is a new forum to discuss ActivityPub, created by NodeBB developer Julian Lam.

A blog by the WordPress ActivityPub team with more details on their latest updates, with expanded moderation tooling and improvements under the hood.
Piefed now has a build-in discovery tool to find new communities to subscribe to.
Blogging platform WriteFreely has further fediverse integrations with their latest update: it now displays ‘likes’ on WriteFreely blog posts made on other platforms. Other platforms such as Mastodon will now also show a preview or summary of a WriteFreely post, in addition to a link.
LemmyBridge is a new browser extension that connects you to Lemmy discussions for any website you visit.

@crossgolf_rebel Im Artikel ist die Rede von autoritären Regierungen (ich kenne keinen Diktator der das Fediverse nutzt). Und ist die Frage rhetorisch gemeint (im Sinne eines Jammerns, warum nur?) oder ernsthaft? Ich weiß leider keine gute Antwort. Weder mit Idealismus noch mit Machtstreben scheint es bisher dazu geführt zu haben, dass demokratische Parteien das offene Web wirklich ernst nehmen und sein Potential für die direkte Kommunikation mit seinen Zielgruppen voll nutzen.
ist bei mir wohl ein Stück weit Frustration dabei.
Während "autoritären Regierungen" das potentioal von Fediverse Software durchaus zu nutzen wissen, scheint es demokratischen Regierunge nmehr als schwer zu fallen, das Fediverse auch nur ansatzweise als weiteren Weg zu sehen.
Und ich würde Truth und Konsorten, nicht mal ansatzweise als Teil des Fediverse sehen. Auch wenn sie die selbe Software verwenden.
@crossgolf_rebel Wer sollte sie davon abhalten demnächst das „Bösiverse“ zu gründen und sich mit den Diktatoren dieser Welt zu föderieren? Das wird die nächste Stufe, wenn du mich nach der Zukunft fragst. Aber vielleicht bleiben sie auch lieber unter sich. Wäre schade, wenn wir es es als Demokraten nicht schaffen, diese Potentiale der freien Kommunikation im Fediverse unseren demokratischen Parteien beizubringen. Nur Mut!

Im Moment sehe ich im Fediverse nicht viele Demokratische Parteien. Eher ein paar Einzelkämpfer, bis auf die Grünen Instanz, da geht schon wesentlich mehr. Hoffen wir, das das ausgebaut wird und die demokratischen Parteien dieses Potential und auch die positive und progressive Grundeinstellung hier im Fediverse, mit nutzen
@crossgolf_rebel Tun sie doch nicht. Truth Social ist eine geschlossene, proprietäre Plattform, die Mastodon nur als Basis nutzt. Auch Erdogan wird sicher kein Teil des Fediverse.
@kaibojens @crossgolf_rebel ja dann ist doch ein Netzwerk mit mächtiger Reichweite doch deutlich ein Vorteil, also Instagram mit threats oder ähnliches. Auf Mastodon würde ich auch beim besten Willen keinen Wahlkampf betreiben wollen.
@Zoidtes @kaibojens @crossgolf_rebel Wenn ich einen Wahlkampf führen würde, dann im Fediverse (Mastodon ist ja nur ein Teil davon). Und warum das sinnvoll ist: kein Dritter entscheidet mehr über meine Reichweite. Keine fremden Algorithmen und Abhängigkeiten. Die potentielle Reichweite auf Instagram ist vielleicht höher, aber die tatsächliche Reichweite in Wahlkampf ist mit hohem finanziellen Einsatz verbunden. Wobei ab Oktober nicht mal mehr politische Werbung auf Meta geschaltet werden kann.
@kaibojens @crossgolf_rebel Das kannst du gerne machen, das schließt ja auch Threads mit ein. Dritte entscheiden in der Hinsicht komplett über deine Reichweite. Mastodon ist ein Paradebeispiel vom Blocken ganzer Instanzen, Nutzer und co. selbstverständlich immer mit einer staken Begründung.
Für einen Wahlkampf ist Reichweite jedoch kritisch. Ist ja schön und gut da Wahlkampf zu machen, wo man so oder so stimmen bekommen wird, es ist jedoch wichtig neue stimmen dazu zu gewinnen.
Den Begründungen fürs Blocken kann ich mich schon anschließen, wir nur von den Betroffenen nicht so gesehen.
Nur als Gegenbeispiel, in den Konzerndiensten ist es auch nicht viel anders, da wirst du mit Shadowban, Reichweitenverlust und anderem belohnt.
Deswegen sagen wir auch immer für neue, setzt euch nicht auf problematische Instanzen, weil sonst werdet ihr von Zeit zu Zeit nicht alle user erreichen können. Und meist ist dieses Instanzblocken eine temporäre Sache von meist 2 Wochen
Ja das stimmt, shadowbans und ein folgender Reichweitenverlust ist natürlich auch ein Problem. ich bin hier so einigen Instanzen begegnet, wo ich definitiv weiß, dass sie kritisch sind, aber dennoch möchte ich lesen, was die zu melden haben. Das kriege ich auf meiner aktuellen Instanz nicht hin. Hier habe ich eine schöne neue Welt, ohne "böses" o.ä .
Ob eine self hosted Instanz, nicht auch noch gebannt wird? Sehr schwierig die heutige Situation
Oh, eure Instanz hat ja massig Instanzen gesperrt. wobei masto.online nicht ganz so auffällig selber für Spam und hate sorgt, wie masto.social
Um das zu überprüfen gibt es ein cooles tool auf fediblock.grautier.eu/ Damit kannst du selber auch mal andere Instanzen überprüfen und checken, was die alles sperren.
Generell gehört so was auch ein wenig zur Moderation des Fediverse. Wie Moderiert wird, ist dann wieder eine individuelle Einstellung der Instanz.
Wenn ich jetzt sehe, wie der Ruf von Chaos.social ist und das die rigeros alles wegblocken und wie wenig die dann doch machen, sollte man die Wahl seiner Heimat mal überdenken, wenn einem wichtig ist (und man damit auch mental umgehen kann), was auf anderen Instanzen los ist

Mehr als 50 Menschen hatten gestern früh den Weg zum Kanzleramt gefunden, darunter auch mehrere Aktive von Aktion Freiheit statt Angst, um dem dort versammelten schwarz-roten Kabinett klar zu machen, dass wir keine US Überwachungssoftware in unserem Land haben wollen.
Innenminister Dobrindt will die umstrittene Software des Rechtsextremisten Peter Thiel bundesweit einsetzen. Dagegen haben heute anlässlich der Kabinettssitzung der schwarz-roten Koalition besorgte Bürger vor dem Kanzleramt demonstriert.
Nicht nur, dass diese Software unsere Daten für die deutschen Sicherheitsbehörden zusammen führt und auswertet – nein – Palantir ist ein US Unternehmen. Noch dazu gehört es, wie bereits erwähnt, dem amerikanischen Rechtsextremisten Peter Thiel. Mindestens er kann in unsere Daten hinein schauen. Aber nicht nur er. Nach dem US Cloud Act müssen US Unternehmen Daten, auch wenn sie im Ausland liegen, an die US Sicherheitsbehörden herausgeben. Deutschland macht sich mit der Nutzung dieser US Software wieder und weiter von den USA abhängig.
In Bayern wird diese Software bereits von der Polizei genutzt. Bislang sind 30 Millionen Menschen in Bayern in dem System gespeichert. Da diese Zahl über der Gesamtzahl der Menschen in Bayern liegt, müssen wir annehmen, dass auch Reisende, die in Bayern ein oder aussteigen von dem System erfasst werden.
Ein Gangsterstück hat die CDU in Baden-Württemberg mit dieser Software vollbracht. Ohne eine Genehmigung durch die schwarz-grüne Koalition im Land wurde dort ein Vertrag mit Palantir unterzeichnet. Anstatt die Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen und den Vertrag rückgängig zu machen hat Ministerpräsident Kretschmer nun die Seiten gewechselt und verteidigt die Nutzung dieser Software im Ländle.
Doch noch können wir den bundesweiten Einsatz von Palantir verhindern. Schon über 300.000 Menschen haben den Appell von Campact gegen das Spähprogramm unterzeichnet. Justizministerin Stefanie Hubig (SPD) sieht Palantir kritisch. Und auch andere Sozialdemokrat*innen lehnen den Einsatz der Überwachungssoftware ab. Nun kommt es auf die SPD an: Bleibt sie standhaft oder knickt sie vor ihrem Koalitionspartner ein? Wenn wir Hubig jetzt den Rücken stärken, kann sie Palantir stoppen.

Occasionally - but it tends to be things I wasn't really that bothered about doing. Frustration is usually because I realise I'm just not going to make the thing as well as I'd like.

But projects can often be put on the shelf for an indeterminate length of time. But that isn't giving up, that is tactical retreat and regrouping until the right frame of mind returns 😀
The only frustration is running out of "on the go" project storage space...

A3 I think my frustrations tend to stall me. I have ADHD and so can have trouble with concentration when measuring or cutting. This can lead to me just abandoning a project - but I am getting better at restarting or going back through the basics again. One thing that frustrates me is wasting materials so that can inhibit a restart and maybe make me hash on a bit which is less clever really.

The reason to create is just to create.
Anyone who creates within their ability is doing it perfectly well and can sit back and enjoy the fact they are creating.
Social media is a right so and so for implying the perceived perfection in others is the goal

Else you'll only end up creating extra work undoing your mistakes. Alas that's just part of making. Not every day is a good day.
But the good days? The most exquisite high. A high that is essentially impossible to explain to anyone who isn't also a maker.

A3: Isn’t that a perfectly normal part of the making process? No? Just me then?
I’m my own worst enemy. I have high standards and constantly berate myself if I struggle to do something or just flat out can’t do it.
That’s not limited to my making, it happens at work and with my running. It’s just the way I’m wired.

in reply to MakersHourQuestions • • •A3 #makershour ABSOLUTELY!! I go through it repeatedly with my Nettie project. Largely because on the house I got myself in a tangle. Instead of cracking on with the house Alfred made i feared my 1st go would ruin it so I found a broken down "practice house" and it worked in the story in my head but back of competence, self doubt and the need to work hard... you know the story.
Also, in my early (ish) days of self taught crochet, I gathered up every bit of wool ready to hurl out when a couple of online friends stepped in and pointed out a fundamental error i was making... everything fell into place after that Hazel and Handy! Crochet heroes but they aren't "here"

Now, while pushing through that barrier and triumphing while learning something is admirable, if your making is a hobby then hell, feel free to pop the frustrating thing on the shelf for however long. You're under no obligation to stress over things.

I'm not sure if I am never frustrated or actually always frustrated... if it is your base state what do you measure it against? But it rarely stops me doing a thing, aside from the unending frustration of not enough time.
I sometimes wonder why I spend so much time on some things, and worry if I'm getting the opportunity cost balance right.
But typically the more frustrated I get the more I dig in my heels to finish a thing. I could probably do with being more frustrated more often so I finish more things? 😅
I get most frustrated at bad tools. Actually, TBH, I recall I have given up on a couple of 3D prints becuase I just didn't want to waste more time coaxing my crappy 3D printer to not fail. (Thankfully most of what I want to print is fairly basic utilitarian and self designed knowing the limitations of my equipment.)
Oh, and computers. Constantly fucking frustrating. I gave up on a whole "computer" career once out of frustration. 🤪

A3. Awkwardness of setting up equipment is a frustration point for me, to the extent that I avoid sewing machines for most projects (the Crow Tools folding project keeper is an exception).
Frustration with skill level (sewing straight and evenly spaced seams; padding a wire doll armature; pinning seams; working above hand and lap sized projects) can be a discouragement which can cause some projects to go idle.

A3. Giving up on individual projects? Nearly all of them. Giving up on making? Never. The process is the part that heals me so if one project ends in ruin I can just switch gears (although I'll get sad about the time, effort, and materials invested).
To get concrete: I have a split keyboard build that I had to put on ice until I've improved my soldering skills, after ruining the first PCB. I haven't given up, but I did get very irritated.

I frequently get frustrated when I do a watercolor on my own, after feeling successful during the paint-along! Sometimes I get too frustrated and I don’t finish the painting. My spouse wants my incomplete paintings and my rejects so they can turn them into postcards.
It took me a few years to find a watercolor instructor I like. Before that, I gave up looking!
I’ll get back to this thread soon, I hope!
