I found out recently that it's illegal in Switzerland to own just one guinea pig because they get lonely and need a friend. It is against the law to leave your guinea pig on its own. You MUST have at least two guinea pigs. What a world!
in reply to Laura Manach

Maybe I'll ask Santa to be a Swiss Guinea pig, if that's even possible ☻️
in reply to Laura Manach

I don't think that that's unusual. Different countries have differing specific regulations but are broadly similar. Here in the U.K. for example…

Where the earth remembers, and the stone speaks of toil - Burra’s silent witness to a miner’s fate.

Burra Cemetery, Burra, South Australia.

Burra Cemetery is a heritage-listed site in the historic mining town of Burra, South Australia. Established in 1850, it replaced an earlier burial ground from 1846 and quickly became the final resting place for many of Burra’s early settlers, miners, and prominent families.

The cemetery’s iconic stone wall was built in 1854, enclosing a landscape rich with colonial history. Burra itself was a major copper mining center in the 19th century, and the cemetery reflects the town’s social and economic evolution—from Cornish miners to civic leaders.

Today, it remains a place of quiet reflection and historical significance.

For #DoorsDay (and also #ThrowbackThursday to 2001) here are some doors I saw at the Musée Départemental Breton in Quimper, France. I love the look of the blue against the stone.

I almost certainly took the photo because of the crucifix with the unusual depiction of Jesus, but when I look at it now the doors also jump out at me.

Here's a new term I learned: "Shadow AI." It's when employees use unregulated AI tools at work, creating massive, invisible security risks for their companies. The biggest threat might not be hackers, but helpful AIs used without oversight. Huh. #Tech #AI

❌ NO: Texas did not pass a law in June banning Mountain Dew.

✔️ A state law that went into effect 9/1 requires manufacturers to add warning labels to food products that contain certain ingredients, including Yellow 5, a synthetic dye. The Dew's main flavor has Yellow 5.

I've read so many news articles that go "we checked Weibo and this is what Chinese people in general think about [whatever]" and it's generally part of some scare about how anti-western or gullible Chinese people are. I've never seen a news article go "we checked what Chinese people on VPNs wrote on Instagram and Twitter and this is what they think about [whatever]" probably because this would ruin the "brainwashed Chinese people" angle
in reply to Manuela Malasaña

man the fact that "Chinese" can refer to an ethnicity as well as citizens of a specific country makes that last post parse really strangely as it would be really weird to say that if the intention was to describe ethnically Chinese people in the diaspora. Somehow making such a sweeping generalization about nationals of a particular country seems less fraught.

for example, Spanish people love ham. yep they go nuts for amateur radio

The image shows a black baking tray with seven breaded food items arranged on it. The tray is placed on a white surface. The food items are cylindrical and appear to be coated in breadcrumbs, giving them a light brown color. They are spaced out on the tray, with some crumbs scattered around them. The tray has a slightly worn appearance, with visible crumbs and small food particles on its surface. The overall scene suggests that the food items are prepared for baking or frying.

probably dumb take, but typst is just as bad as latex. whether I have to look up in one documentation and struggle for 20mins to get a simple border with a solid color or struggle 20mins in the other one is no difference for me
in reply to kaia

the problem is that you you cannot remove the complexity out of creating a markup language as complex as LaTeX without making it as complex

the things that are easy to do in LaTeX are because they have little to no options to it, like you don't select the thickness of the bold text or the slant of the italicised text

but once you want to do fine tuning, decorations etc there is no way to remove the very customisation that people expect out of the system

it's like comparing html to css
