"The truth is actually very straightforward. Ordinary even. And that's even more unsettling.
"It's far more sinister than a hot mic," says Egelman.
There's no credible evidence that your phone runs a secret, always-on microphone to target ads, and there are clear technical and policy reasons why.
Independent researchers have gone looking for covert "listening" and found none, including a definitive 2018 Northeastern University study that has yet to be superseded. What they did catch in a handful of cases were screen recordings or image and video uploads to third parties. Creepy, sure, but not a hot mic.
Laws matter, too. The federal Wiretap Act bans intercepting conversations without consent, and many states (like California) require all parties to consent, stacking civil and even criminal liability on covert, continuous capture. An "always-listening for ads" feature would constantly record non-consenting bystanders and invite massive legal exposure. I know that's not completely reassuring, but that's why it's implausible in practice.
When I run the bar moment by ad-tech veteran Ari Paparo, he doesn't flinch. Paparo helped build the pipes โ he founded the Beeswax DSP (acquired by Comcast's FreeWheel) and led product management at AppNexus/DoubleClick โ so he's seen exactly how ad targeting really works.
"I'm very confident this is not happening. The phone is not actually listening to you," he says. "I would say that 100% of my colleagues in the advertising world agree with me."
I know that's a tough pill to swallow, but he offers the real and almost boring explanation for why it feels uncanny: People are predictable. "The ads are attempting to guess what you're interested in," he says. "It's all statistics."
Simple version, for the record: Ads follow your behavior. No listening required."

It is never wrong to fight against genocide. Use anything or everything available. Here is a real boat and real people if you need it.
It may seem like a small quibble compared to the human lives at stake here.
And yet, I think using generative AI to make the people you support look "better" means your'e basically setting the precedence for using it to make the people you oppose look worse.
...and before you know it, it's made-up evidence all the way down, and filtering actual facts from made-up embellishments becomes impossible. That's an enormously dangerous road to travel.

Peter Schiff argued that Americaโs trade deficits are misunderstood. โItโs actually the other way around,โ he said, pushing back on Donald Trumpโs claim that the U.S. is being taken advantage of. โWe take advantage of the world. They give us goods produced at significant cost in resources, land, labor, capitalโฆ and all we do is run off dollars on a printing press, cost us nothing, and we give it to them.โ
Brent Johnson responded that this imbalance is exactly what comes with Americaโs position. โThatโs the privilege of being the hegemon as you get global.โ
Schiff countered that such privilege is temporary. โItโs the privilege that we are about to lose. Thatโs what $3,500 gold tells you. Dollar is on the way out as the reserve currency.โ

โI expect Powell to loseโ
Brent went on record with a bold call that included something rarely seen in market commentary: timing.
He predicts โ as soon as October โ a 10 or 20% market downturnโฆ perhaps welcomed by the Trump admin so they can blame the Fed and lower rates.
โTo get the cover to do that, they need some pain. I donโt think they can do that right now with things the way they already are.โ
โSome kind of a crisis that they blame on the Fed, and then they go back to even easier monetary policy than maybe they had last time. And that is what then gives the fuel to go much higher.โ
With markets at record highs and inflation still sticky, โitโs really hard to do it now.โ
Brentโs prediction: โI think Powell is pushing back a little bit. But this is the thingโI expect Powell to lose. I think Trump and Bessent are going to get control.โ
