Most people remember Track & Field as an NES game—specifically the one that worked with the Power Pad. Fair. That’s how a whole generation ended up stomping on their living room carpets in the name of Olympic glory.
But the lineage goes further back. Track & Field started in the arcades, and long before the NES ever launched in North America, it had already been ported everywhere—Apple II, Commodore 64, Atari 8-bit computers, and yes, even the Atari 2600. Konami developed it, but Atari handled publishing. In fact, under their Atarisoft label, Atari scattered this thing across the microcomputer landscape.
The 2600 version showed up in 1984—right in the middle of the video game crash—because if there was going to be an “official Olympic game” for consoles, it had to land on the machine that still sat in more households than anything else.
Now, let’s be honest: “faithful” on the Atari 2600 means extremely simplified sprites, blocky stadium crowds, and sound effects that barely registered as sound effects. But compared to the hardware’s usual output, it’s impressive how recognizable each event still is.
Reception was solid enough. The real sticking point was the control scheme. Using a joystick to mash out sprinting speed was… let’s say “less than ideal.” Unless you had the dedicated Track & Field controller—the one with two big buttons you could slap back and forth—your wrist probably hated you by the end.
And that’s why this version gets forgotten. It wasn’t bad, it was just overshadowed. Everyone remembers the arcade cab. Everyone remembers the NES Power Pad.
