I have had a small hopeful thought. Don't freak out. But: flooding the zone with bullshit is a huge rightwing strategy rn and I think it does work to an extent, but I also think it might work better in bigger countries? Because we're so small it's really hard to hide from us that stuff sucks #nzpol

Agreed. Also, in a smaller place, social networks tend to be naturally more diverse. For example, more city people have family or friends in the countryside, and vice-versa. Our small population makes it harder to balkanize into self-similar filter bubbles, where people are only aware of other people like themselves.

A ridiculous 5-book haul at the library #today. I just meant to return some books and not take any out because I already have plenty going on here at home, but I couldn’t help myself. At least four were on my TBR, but the Carl Hiaasen is new, and I haven’t had time to make it there yet. One is the second book in the series (No Mercy), and one is the start of a series (A Bad Day for Sunshine). Ascension looks really cool, and Rosarita looks like an amazing short novelette.

The image shows a collection of five books arranged on a quilted bedspread with a black and white pattern. The books are:

  1. "Fever Beach" by Carl Hiaasen, with a vibrant orange and yellow cover featuring sunglasses.
  2. "A Bad Day for Sunshine" by Jarynda Jones, with a white cover and sunglasses illustration.
  3. "Rosarita" by Anita Desai, with a black cover and a white crane image.
  4. "No Mercy" by Joanna Schaffhausen, with a yellow cover and red text.
  5. "Ascension" by Nicholas Binge, with a dark blue cover and a white mountain peak illustration.

The books are positioned with "Fever Beach" and "A Bad Day for Sunshine" at the top, followed by "Rosarita," and "No Mercy" and "Ascension" at the bottom. The bedspread has a textured appearance with a subtle design, and the lighting is dim, creating a cozy atmosphere.

Health exceptions in abortion laws don't reduce infant deaths, according to an analysis of infant mortality data published by the CDC.

Researchers suggest the unclear language in those laws may deter medical professionals from using them, if they’re afraid of prosecution.

So, yesterday I picked up an order from a local blacksmith and he mentioned in passing, with no prompt whatsoever from me, that if I ever wanted to learn to blacksmith from a trans woman or even just someone queer that he could set it up for me.

And now I think I have no choice but to see this through.

why do you even have to ask? 🤩

Also, it would be cool to have a blacksmith friend! And it will be perfect for the day we form our gay little separatist commune 🤭

Look we did NOT start the war. We just borrowed your spy satellite. Giving just one of your dregs to NASA to use as a space telescope is on you. Not funding basic science is on you. Not securing your control api is on you. Bombing first asking questions later, totally on you. With the data we contributed to the Backyard Worlds project, we found a whole brown dwarf system just outside the Oort cloud with a habitable {moon, planet, we’re having our own war just over what to name it}. But don’t blame us for your stupid nuclear war. That’s on you.

I like fucking with genre tropes. I'm socialist going on anarchist as well as feminist and anti-racist, and my writing reflects that. I'm an improviser rather than a planner, so I like to set waypoints in my narratives and then find my way from one to the next.

Trump Admin just signed an EO renaming the Department of Defense to the Department of War, which if you think about it, is depressingly honest, even retroactively.
in reply to DirtWood

yeah I hate to say it but "Department of Defense" is a far more Orwellian euphemism

I like this move mostly because it's pointless virtue signalling that will spend billions on replacing floor mats instead of bombs.

Getting a more honest name out of it is a weird bonus.

I'd love to complete the 1st draft of the final book in a series.
I've got 39k written & aiming for around 60-70k.
But I've received first round of edits for another book from my publisher so that takes precedence.

Let them choose. That way if things go poorly (indigestion, baker’s missing finger, etc.) it won’t be your fault.

🎬️ watched Clueless (1995)

Very likeable, but kind of missing a plot? There's no character arc? Like she starts off a good person and almost all of her actions are for others. There's no conflict here. It's kinda just nothing happening for the whole movie, and then right at the end we suddenly decide to be a stepcest movie?

The image shows two individuals inside a car at night. The person on the left is wearing a dark-colored jacket with a red pattern, and their hair is blonde. The person on the right is wearing a gray sweater and has dark hair. The interior of the car is dimly lit, with the focus on the two individuals. The text at the bottom of the image reads, "Oh, I'm having a Twin Peaks experience." The overall atmosphere is moody and intimate, with the darkness of the night outside the car contrasting with the interior lighting.

It's not about the guns per se. The point is to declare us, as a class, mentally defective. That is how someone loses their 2A rights due to mental illness.

That could impact our parental rights, our ability to make healthcare and financial decisions, and open the door to institutionalization.

God of War on PlayStation 2.

One of the PS2’s crown jewels—and deservedly so. A brutal, stylish hack-’n’-slash with over-the-top set pieces, iconic characters, and level design that keeps you hooked. Even today, it’s impressive how well it pushes the PS2 hardware.

Honestly, this is the PS2 game I’ve sunk the most hours into. I still need to fire it up on my CRT, though—that’s the proper way to play it.

It's interesting how similar Bash and Zsh scripting is, and yet it seems like every single place where they differ (that I've noticed since I use Bash rarely), Zsh is unequivocally better
in reply to nytpu

Oh yeah, as an example, when expanding an array, in Bash apparently just doing "${my_array}" will only give the first element!. You need to do ${my_array[@]} to expand the whole array. Whereas with Zsh ${my_array} expands to the full array (minus empty strings for some reason, you need the [@] to include empty arguments) which is, you know, what you actually want rather than just the first element lol.
