There seems to be a correlation between what we accept as the real world, and computer games. There is continual improvement in immersive technology, including the shooting and killing in games, as an entertainment. It does not seem to be a huge leap to say we may be in a computer game, i.e. a simulation. Maybe we are just entertainment.

likely related to the PFAS ban. They will probably not heat it enough to get rid of all residues. Wear gloves etc if you must. But then you still have this stuff on the bottom of every one of your prints.
@RichiH Makes sense, wasn't aware how far they've come with that ban (also somewhat ignorant towards the fact that e.g. PTFE tubes are made out of PFAS - how will those even be replaced?).

i've been working on a list of the fundamental archetypes of video-games. literature is primarily concerned with men causing drama, so all works of literature can concisely be boiled down to a man opposing something. video-games on the other hand are primarily concerned with our instinctual desires for interaction, so our archetypes are fundamentally different.
Read lots of weird text that makes you wonder (about the human condition if you're a teenager, about what the game writers were going through if you're much older than that)?
Player vs. Player is self explanatory. Player vs. Game - Soulslikes Player vs. Controller - Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy Player vs. Feels - Visual Novels. Narrative games. Etc.
@Longwing this framework doesn't explain why anything is fun though, but also there's a lot that can't be described with this framework because many forms of satisfying interaction in games are not fundamentally adversarial
I mean the same can be said of literature. Not all fiction can be distilled to “Man vs. X” either. Cozy fiction breaks the mold unless we get liberal with what “vs.” really entails.
A cozy story where someone finally gets a soufflé right is still X vs. soufflé (environment).

For why 20 is in its own distinct category, I bring this argument: KD is fairly unique among games in that there is basically just one mechanic and a completely flat ontology.
Other games have multiple mechanics, background and foreground, player characters and NPC, items and goals and what not
KD has a game world with an ontology that, at any given point in time, has just two categories
1. small enough to be part of katamari 2. will eventually be small enough to be part of katamari
@elilla There is a distinction here in that of course Katamari Damacy, the computer game you can put into a PS2, is of course a simulation of some virtual world, and that simulation implements rules (broadly: physics).
But they are not really part of the "game rules" of KD any more than say "if you kick the ball it'll fall down eventually" is a part of soccer rules. They are part of the world and the game is an emergent property of the way that world works.
@elilla Likewise, you can go for min time etc., but I really think KD is sort of unique in that it's essentially purely a kind of physics sandbox where even ignoring all those external motivators (score, going for min time, etc.) there is a compelling gameplay loop there that, viewed from within the world it builds, has no rules, goals, etc. whatsoever.
@elilla When you strip away scoring and timing etc., there's still something there that's inherently fun. Every interaction in that game that you can trigger at any given point is valid. You don't need fouls, lives, fancy rules, failure states, nothing. Some interactions get you closer to an end state and others don't, but that's really it.

@dan613 sure. fruit can be many things and often is literally fruit, but conceptually fruit is a usually-colorful, usually-convex-ish object that is satisfying to interact with and often confers some kind of temporary benefit to the player. this is a diverse category with lots of interesting and varied examples, but here is one narrow example of fruit based gameplay that i understand is one of the more popular ones: sciencedirect.com/science/arti…
@dan613 sometimes fruit is one of many interactive elements in the game (such as in the classic fps DOOM), and sometimes the game itself takes on the transcendent function of fruit (such as the game Rez)
