It was the most gamer-friendly OS. DirectX, X-Input, and wide backward compatibility made it the default. That’s why the Windows library got so large.
That era is over. Proton on Linux wiped out almost every advantage Windows had. Almost all games run if you use a gaming-centric distro like SteamOS, Bazzite, or Nobara. The failures are mostly titles with kernel-level anticheat.
The irony is that Linux now runs a range of old Windows games that no longer run on Windows 11. If you want to play something from 2002, Linux is often the safer bet.
Beyond compatibility, Linux gives you clean wins. Better performance. Full gamepad navigation. Fast suspend and resume. Fewer moving parts. Less junk.
If you build your own PC, install Bazzite. You save the Windows license fee and get a better gaming experience outright.
The saddest part is that so many big names intentionally break that compatibility with Linux by either using anti-cheat that either has their Proton and Linux support ripped out or is so invasive that you'd think Microsoft and/or China paid them to make it so, essentially what we'd call a rootkit in the cybersecurity field.
The only one I think is even remotely interesting was GTA V Online. Oh well, now I don't need that 💩 for any reason.
I did have one smaller game that crashed under Proton after the title screen due to missing codecs and libraries. After using ProtonTricks to install the missing 5 dependencies, it works.
None of the company's other games have this issue, and all of the rest of the them have good or even great Proton & Steam Deck support.
@cameron_bosch My usual fix for games that don’t launch is switching to Proton’s experimental branch. And if that doesn’t work, okay, I’ll go look at community conversations and see what will work.
But the thing I always come back to is that there’s a whole lot of Windows games that work with Linux that don’t work on Windows 11. So you win some, you lose some.

Did you have a favorite tree when you were a kid? For a time my family lived in Pennsylvania, and there was a very large crab apple tree behind the house. It was that perfect sort of tree that had a wide, nearly horizontal branch that you could climb up to and lie down on very comfortably. that's so nice! I had a favorite tree that had evenly spaced branches all the way from the bottom to the top, so I could climb up it very easily, and then watch people going by, who had no idea I I was up there.
my favorite tree was a giant ancient sycamore. It’s branches were too far off the ground to climb but it had a split at the bottom that was big enough for two kids to sit inside.
I got some really bad news today about my grandma's health, and I'm just trying to deal with it. I think the best way is to talk about her and what made her special. She was a huge reason my family accepted my transition. My dad was having trouble calling me Itzayana, but when I visited my grandma she immediately switched over to Itzy. A few weeks later my dad went to go visit her, and then he had no issues with my name. My whole extended family calls me Itzy or Itzayana, and I know it's because she set the example.
One time a cousin of mine thought it would be funny to hid in the folding couch, and then pop out to scare our grandma. Obviously my grandma sniffed out the scheme, so she just sat on her so she was stuck and kept going "¿Donde Lauren? ¿Donde Lauren?" The rest of us thought it was hilarious.

I am a native Malaysian person, specifically from the Sabah region. It seems that, although I am a native of this land, it feels like nothing belongs to me here. Capitalists and cronies own the land; our rights to electricity are being denied, and our voices are constantly suppressed or harassed.
Today I see a lot of social media posts lamenting the horror of 15 dead and 40 wounded from an antisemitic attack on a Hanukkah celebration in Australia.
Most antisemitism isn't like that, though. It's smaller and more casual. And very few people speak up about that kind.
You might not change anyone's mind, but I ask that you speak up if you encounter such a situation, because unchecked bigoted beliefs like that are dangerous.
But most people don't say anything, because it's easier not to.
