I think I'd kind of like to cut a subset of PostScript out and implement it as a reusable foundation for a generic embedded systems language. It's Forth enough to be fairly simple to implement and port, and should fit into tiny systems without too much trouble, but also safe enough to afford to be careless about in contexts where obscure abstraction leaks can really trigger a programmer, like the classic Forths aren't.
The only issue is, original PostScript did a sort of OOP as a bolted-on feature, and it's pretty clumsy in practice. Considering that the messaging facet of OOP is actualy pretty useful in the sort of embeddedd systems that this might work well in, I'd probably have to figure out how to retrofit something like Io's or Potion's object system, or perhaps, Perl's blessings, into the PostScript worldview. I can sort of see how both of these approaches could work, but not yet clearly.

For years, we made the assumption (based on the likely intention of the songwriter and group) that deserts do miss the rain, so it's almost certainly meant to imply that the song protagonist misses the person they're singing about.
However, deserts themselves (the geology and geography) aren't a form of life or sentient to any degree as far as we know, so logically they are unable to miss the rain.
This line of thinking changes the meaning of the song quite a bit 😅
Of course, deserts contain things that are forms of life and have varying degrees of sentience, so the beings within deserts could potentially miss and long for the rain.
Going back to your question, maybe the ground itself cannot feel good when it rains, but the beings within or on the ground might feel good when it rains, especially if they'd been waiting on it for hydration.

possibly... although in my experience optical is nothing like as bad (difficult) as with dental (other than cost, of course). For instance, Specsavers do a pretty good job on free NHS tests.....

While the cost of the test for those that do have to pay is (about £27) is similar to the cost of a NHS dental check up, there are plenty of (private) opticians you can book with whether your eye test is free or not. Clearly the support offered to Opticians to provide the test is sufficient to get them to provide the service.
This is certainly not true of Dentists. It is basically impossible to sign up for NHS Dental treatment here is Devon.
I do still get NHS Dental treatment, having been a NHS patient for many years, but my family don't any longer as they were with another practice that went entirely private. Even my practice only has one NHS Dentist, I suspect it's basically a job for initiating foreign qualified dentist: all my dentist have had a foreign qualification and once the dentist has a track record they also go private and I (eventually) get a new one.

Yes exactly the same at the practice where I (unlike my wife) am still an NHS patient - its a slow moving revolving door as the new (foreign) dentist builds up experience/record & moves into the much larger private segment of the practice...

Allegedly NHS dentists were closed due to it being hazardous. HOWEVER post-Thatcher, dentistry had moved from NHS dentists doing some private work to Private Practices doing licensed NHS work.
So all that stopped was the NHS dentistry. The SAME dentists would do the work... if you could pay. Most, like myself, couldn't.
Post-lockdown, a lot simply dumped NHS and went Private only.
