The fall of 2025 is dedicated to utopias and utopianisation.
We will slow down to examine how we perceive life and its key structures – to actively let go of the old and make room for the new. Utopias is the final theme of the Towards Action project, bringing together content from throughout the project – and, of course, lots of new things!
The word utopia originates from the writings of Thomas More, where it refers to a new world where everything is different – in this context, meaning colonies. The meaning of this originally colonialist term has evolved over time and taken on new meanings, often referring to something detached from reality, even impossible and only imaginable.
But what do we mean when we talk about utopias and utopianisation?
Well, at least this:
🌸Everyday utopias, meaning unusual and exceptional ways to organise living and being, that exist in the modern world around us. What can we learn from them, and is utopia really just something distant and detached from the present?
🌸 Radical utopianisation — that is, throwing oneself into different - also frightening - imaginations of the near future. Could they hold hope, or even some answers to questions about our own actions and agency? Could they provide resilience to change?
🌸 Co-created and shared spaces. Places where there is room for examining the present, the future, the frightening and the inspiring, and which themselves serve as small test sites for utopias.
The goal for the fall is to develop diverse thinking in everyday life and enable experiences of agency in utopian decisions. We aim to help each other break free from black-and-white thinking and create space for active, creative action.
This fall, we will organize a study circle and the Action Weekend in Helsinki. More information about both events will be available in our next posts — so stay tuned!
