The image features a close-up of a gray tabby cat peeking over the edge of a white surface, likely a door or a piece of furniture. The cat's head is turned slightly to the left, with its large, round eyes and prominent whiskers visible. Its ears are perked up, and its fur has a mix of gray and black stripes, typical of a tabby pattern. The cat's paw is resting on the edge of the surface, and a silver knob with a purple accent is visible on the right side of the image. The background is a plain, light-colored wall, providing a neutral backdrop that highlights the cat's features.

Trump approaches foreign relations by maximizing chaos and instability—and then hoping he can somehow claim victory by producing an agreement that ramps down tensions.

This is precisely how he approached his career as a (mostly failed) businessman.

Comments and questions welcome here (especially if you are in the Americas, and will thus be asleep for the live version).

in reply to Daniel Kochmański

@jackdaniel I couldn't disagree with that article more.

Java originally didn't have format strings. You have to do things almost exactly like how the article showed it:

String s = "a = " + a + ", b = " + b + "\n";<br>

Eventually, people couldn't stand this anymore, and they got a format statement which borrowed a lot from C:
String s = String.format("a = %s, b = %s\n", a, b);<br>

Turns out that distinguishing the way you want to format things with the data you want to format is good thing.

He then goes into a strawman showing some really complicated FORMAT patterns, and then write a lot of code that I certainly don't understand (because I didn't learn his API). He didn't need to implement a new library, because if he needed it, WITH-OUTPUT-TO-STRING is right there.

in reply to Elias Mårtenson

@loke I don't have any strong opinion here, but I find the tone of the essay bad.

I certainly have some issues with format, but they are mostly about extensibility (or rather that it is impractical) and that it poorly composes with the pretty printer.

Another interesting thing I rather miss is interpolation, like in cl-interpol.

0 Days since I've reached for a circuit board and stabbed a pin header under my finger nail.
in reply to Nick Poole

Ouch!

Once in College I reached in to a top drawer to see what was in a bin that was there. I pulled out my finger with a capacitor lead sticking out of it. Look first!

in reply to Nick Poole

I’m first in line for less plastic junk in our lives but some kind of protective cover for pin headers would be a welcome addition to the shop.

"It would start losing money very quickly."

FYI that's exactly what #bluesky is doing. They are spending VC money and have no business model. As they both stand, #mastodon is sustainable. BS is not. Apples vs oranges. But they have the hype machine coming out of Twitter, hiding/avoiding the decentralization and the VC money enables. Sometimes the "smart people" either are not, live in a bubble or are lying. But sure we're the assholes for correcting the record.

"Led by the economist Francisco Rodriguez at the University of Denver, the study calculates the total number of excess deaths associated with international sanctions from 1970 to 2021.

The results are staggering. In their central estimate, the authors find that unilateral sanctions imposed by the US and EU since 1970 are associated with 38 million deaths. In some years, during the 1990s, more than a million people were killed. In 2021, the most recent year of data, sanctions caused more than 800,000 deaths.

According to these results, several times more people are killed by sanctions each year than are killed as direct casualties of war (on average, about 100,000 people per year). More than half of the victims are children and the elderly, people who are most vulnerable to malnutrition. The study finds that, since 2012 alone, sanctions have killed more than one million children.

Hunger and deprivation are not an accidental by-product of Western sanctions; they are a key objective. This is clear from a State Department memo written in April 1960, which explains the purpose of US sanctions against Cuba. The memo noted that Fidel Castro – and the revolution more broadly – enjoyed widespread popularity in Cuba. It argued that “every possible means should be undertaken promptly to weaken the economic life of Cuba,” by “denying money and supplies to Cuba, to decrease monetary and real wages, to bring about hunger, desperation and overthrow of government”."
