Not many people know that back in the 1900s, a fedora hat was something completely different from what we consider a fedora today. More like a loose term. In the US, even a Homburg might have been called a fedora.
I’m not sure if we can trust it, but I came across an opinion that the modern understanding of the fedora solidified a bit later on.
