"An analysis by Hanna Homestead of the National Priorities Project, a nonpartisan research group, found that if Trump deployed 3,000 National Guard troops to Chicago it would cost taxpayers around $1,590,000 per day. It’s the latest runaway expense — expected to climb into the hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars — connected to Trump’s efforts to turn the U.S. into a genuine police state.

“Deploying National Guard troops to Chicago is only going to add to taxpayers’ growing tab for these law-and-order optics,” said Stephen Ellis, the president of Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan budget watchdog group. “Spending millions of dollars a day on troops milling about major American cities is a waste of their time and squanders precious resources.”

A federal judge ruled on Tuesday that Trump’s deployment of troops to Los Angeles was illegal and harkened back to Britain’s use of soldiers as law enforcement officers in colonial America. He warned that Trump intends to transform the National Guard into a presidential police force.

It remains unclear whether that judicial decision will be enforced. Given the Supreme Court ruling earlier this year decreeing that federal district courts cannot issue injunctions against federal policies nationwide, any decision on a Chicago occupation would have to come from a case of its own.

Trump has threatened to deploy troops to Chicago for weeks, following militarized crackdowns in Los Angeles in June and in Washington, D.C., last month. “I will solve the crime problem fast, just like I did in D.C. Chicago will be safe again, and soon,” Trump posted to TruthSocial on Tuesday, the same day that the federal judge deemed the California troop deployment illegal."

“Walk the Talk” by VERSION2

A political punch straight out of Nagaland—thrash metal muscle fused with punk fury. The guitars snarl, the rhythms never let up, and the rage cuts through every line. This Naga rock song wails.

If you follow Howes Lane from Northowram to the point when it overlooks the Shibden Valley, you can get wonderful views across that valley towards Halifax. The industry, the heat, the life, and the movement of the town seem to spill over into the quiet valley. I have photographed this cauldron lip many times over the years - here's one from 1967.

TIL that a jockey by the name of Frank Hayes died of a heart attack during a race, then won. Posthumously.

While alive he had never won a race. If he had lived only a few minutes longer, he would have.

(By the way, I don’t support the industrialization of animals. Especially for our entertainment. I just thought it was an interesting story.)

“Here We Are” (2024) by Fifth Note

This one taps straight into hair metal energy—soaring high-pitched vocals, drums marching in lockstep, and guitars that absolutely shred. It’s Naga rock with arena-sized swagger, and the talent on display is undeniable.

There's some really gross hypocricy on Fedi regarding AI by computer scientists/ tech enthusiasts who are vocally critical of some aspects of generative AI for appearances, but who are actively benefiting from the AI bubble professionally, and talking out of both sides of their mouth.

There is also some gross classism in the decrying of people's intelligence who are using it to take shortcuts (as if they are the problem, not the wealth-class or hypercompetitive neo-liberalism).

I think we are making a mistake listening to half-assed criticisms from uncredible sources while focusing on the users of generative AI, instead of directing our ire at the tech industry itself.

There is a complete lack of accountability from the tech world to begin with about all the decisions that led us to the AI bubble.

It is just one of a long string of disastrous failures (#enshittification) and framing it as an AI-only issue, or an issue of degrees ("I know how to use it ethically!"), evades responsibility for the decades long growth of tech-surveillance capitalism.

AI is the logical endpoint of early 21st century tech, and criticisms of it need to be grounded in criticisms of the tech industry in general. #AI #Tech

AI isn't a bubble quercus

LLMs are a generational advance in computer science and cybernetics. there's nothing faddish about them.

AI, or synthetic intelligence or general intelligence - whatever you want to call intelligent machines - have only to become somewhat more imaginative and specifically motivated to be indistinguishable from most articulate, intellectual humans.

those scientists aren't being hypocrites: they're voicing the same dismay at the use of GPT etc. to produce so-called "slop" as most folk.
but they're better informed with respect to the broader applications of machine intelligence - which of course pre-date chatGPT etc. - and are more positive, and no doubt excited by, the future of the technology.
