No matter your experience with raw photo editing, darktable can be intimidating and has a number of unique features which can be hard to understand at first. So just jumping in and flailing around is not a good strategy for learning it. With that in mind, here are my recommendations for getting started properly.

For help and discussion, join the discuss.pixls.us forum, which is the “official” darktable forum and were you'll find the power users and developers. The Play Raw section, in particular, can be a great way to learn.

The Basics

It's important to understand that the workflow and many tools are nothing like in Lightroom or most other raw editors, and trying to fit your old workflow into darktable is almost certainly going to be frustrating. If you have experience color grading video in programs such as Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve, you should find the workflow fairly familiar, though.

The FAQ

Read the new users section before anything else, since that will probably answer some of your questions.darktable.org/about/faq/

Beginner Tutorials

This tutorial is getting a bit old, so some details have changed, but it's still the best for understanding the core workflow: youtu.be/5CmsxxxsMDs

I recommend this tutorial next, since it's more recent, and covers the newer Sigmoid tonemapper: youtu.be/ZUc6LOzg_Nk

By watching those two tutorials, you'll already understand more than some YouTubers making darktable videos... Do not skip them, no matter your previous experience.

The Manual

Keep it handy and don't be afraid to read it. There's a good chance that what you want to know is in there.docs.darktable.org/usermanual/…

Next Steps

There are other YouTube channels and tutorials, of course, but they vary greatly in quality, so these are the only ones I can recommend, without reservations, to new users.

Bruce Williams

Has done a very good job of explaining most features in darktable. His YouTube channel is like an annotated manual.youtube.com/@audio2u

Boris Hajdukovic

The darktable wizard. He's the one to watch to take your editing to the next level and learn all the little tricks.youtube.com/@s7habo

Darktable Landscapes

This is a solid channel for general editing. There are even some videos for users coming from Lightroom.youtube.com/@DarktableLandscap…

Nicolas Winspeare/A Dabble in Photography

Also solid. Often a bit more technical.youtube.com/@adabbleinphotogra…

Aurélien Pierre

A former darktable developer, he has videos going deep into certain modules and topics.youtube.com/c/Aur%C3%A9lienPIE…

Has it occurred to anyone that perhaps having people in the key economic positions in the US not have the lightest grasp of even the uncontroversial parts of economics might be a net negative?

Trump Hosts Tech Titans at White House

Trump hosts tech leaders at the White House to discuss AI and massive investments, while Elon Musk remains absent.

President Donald Trump hosted an exclusive dinner at the White House on Thursday evening, attended by leading executives from the world’s top technology companies. The event highlighted the administration’s commitment to strengthening ties with Silicon Valley and underscored its focus on artificial intelligence and domestic investment.

The dinner was originally planned for the Rose Garden but was moved to the State Dining Room due to weather conditions. Despite the change, the atmosphere remained formal and warm. Trump welcomed his guests with praise, describing them as highly intelligent figures and essential partners in shaping America’s economic future.

Elon Musk’s Absence Draws Attention

The guest list included some of the biggest names in the industry, from Mark Zuckerberg and Tim Cook to Bill Gates and Sam Altman. Yet one absence stood out: Elon Musk. The Tesla and SpaceX chief confirmed he was invited but said he could not attend in person, instead sending a representative. Tensions between Musk and Trump have escalated in recent months following public disagreements, and his absence underscored the widening rift.

Trump offered a pointed remark about Musk, calling him a genius with enormous potential, though he added that there are issues Musk must resolve. The comment reflected the complex relationship between the two men, marked by both respect and strain.

Major Investment Commitments

The central theme of the dinner was investment in America. Trump pressed each executive to state their commitments openly. Meta and Apple pledged to channel investments worth hundreds of billions of dollars. Google announced plans exceeding $200 billion, while Microsoft outlined an annual investment of tens of billions.

OpenAI, represented by CEO Sam Altman, voiced strong support for Trump’s pro-business policies. Altman described the evening as “a refreshing change” and pledged to expand AI certification programs to benefit millions of Americans by 2030.

Bill Gates offered a different angle, emphasizing the role of technology in advancing medical research. He highlighted AI’s potential to accelerate the development of vaccines and treatments for diseases such as HIV and sickle cell. Gates also praised public health initiatives previously launched during Trump’s presidency, framing AI as a crucial driver of future breakthroughs.

A Shift in Relations with Silicon Valley

The gathering marked a turning point in the government’s relationship with the tech industry. In prior years, tensions had flared over regulation and criticism of Big Tech practices. This time, the atmosphere was notably different. Executives not only attended but expressed open appreciation for policies designed to foster innovation and growth.

Trump reinforced the idea that America must remain the global leader in technology. “We want innovation to be born in America, to grow in America, and to benefit the American people,” Trump declared during the dinner.

Politics and Economics Intertwined

Beyond economics, the dinner carried significant political weight. Trump aimed to signal that his administration is not solely reliant on traditional industries but is also aligning with the leaders of technology who are shaping the digital future.

For the executives, attending the White House was a symbol of readiness to work more closely with the administration. For the public, the event was seen as a strategic moment that will influence the trajectory of AI, education, and healthcare across the United States.

Closing Perspective

Elon Musk’s absence was notable but did not overshadow the importance of the dinner. With figures such as Zuckerberg, Cook, Gates, Nadella, Pichai, and Altman at the table, the event underscored that technology now lies at the heart of America’s political and economic strategy.

Olam News will continue to follow the evolving relationship between Washington and Silicon Valley and its global impact on innovation. Readers can also explore our in-depth analysis on technology investment strategies in the Business and Technology sections of Olam News.

Increasingly clear the *only* thing that will stop that is if Labour get into such a panic they legislate for PR in time for the next general election. Despite everything, the opinion polls are *still* just indicating a left-of-centre (Labour+LibDem+Green+SNP) majority in a general election held on a PR basis.
