in reply to Sindarina, Edge Case Detective • • •@sindarina Yup - fired up my mobile lab for the first time since the move and it looks like the battery died on the NUC that runs the show so when I went to run my scripts to auto-deploy an environment, it deployed some key machines that create certs for internal inter-service comms dated back to 1970.
For some reason the NTP configuration didn't take (probably too much skew)

in reply to Erik Ableson • • •Yeah, I have a sync on boot that deliberately forces the clock before even starting the NTP daemon, and any services that depend on an accurate clock.
Too many cases of weirdness over the years, especially in combination with the great blessings that systemd has brought us.

Been ages since I've touch anything VMware on the server side, though. It's all Proxmox all the time here, with the occasional Hyper-V for a customer.

in reply to Sindarina, Edge Case Detective • • •@sindarina Unfortunately, not so much. SSH into yes, but the boot fundamentals are different and tweaking at this level is *not* recommended.
Time to move the mobile lab over to Proxmox and switch to Terraform for auto-deploying labs for the university classes, but that also means I need to update all of my courseware etc. which is sadly way down on the priority list at the moment

in reply to Sindarina, Edge Case Detective • • •@sindarina *should* being the operative word here. I think that the problem is that it's part of an auto-deployment script and the network connection for allowing the NTP is coming too late in the installation process inside the VM.
Plus something strange on the host as it's not connecting to the 0.europe.pool.ntp.org address, but does fine on 1-3. Removing that entry and I'll see if that stabilizes things on the host (although this problem should only occur if I turn off the lab for an extended period)
